Amazigh people who comprise many native *"dark skin"* tribes or small kingdoms in North Africa united to go against the Roman's invasion in region... The Greeks and romans called them *"Berber (strangers or foreigners)"* and they called themselves *"Amazigh (the free people)".*
The light skin *"Berbers"* of today are *"mixage of race and the outcast"* of Romans and Greeks in North Africa rome provinces.

It is not true, the amazighs of today have the same genes as the iberomaurisians found in north africa. The dark ones are mixed with western africans. if you want to meet the pure 1000% amazighs, you go to the sous in Morocco. The sousis are rarely mixed.

@PanfordKhalifa Amazigh is neither a tribe nor ethnic. *But they were as numerous indigenous african tribes* who lived in Africa from North to South and since *God* created earth, and the sons of Noah spread on earth after the flood.
Amazigh means *"free people"* in Tamazight (which meaning too the language of the free people, because each tribe had their own indigenous language) after creating confederation tribes that went against invaders... First against the Romans, second against the Vandales (Hispanic), again against the Byzantium (christianizing half of the confederation tribes) and finally the muslims arabs led by Uqba ibn Nafi Al-Fihri, NOT BECAUSE OF THE DIFFERENCE SKIN COLOR LIKE INVADERS BUT BECAUSE OF *"ISLAM".* As *real Arab ( Qahtani),* from the Nabateans, sabeans, and Himyarite from the south of the peninsula had *"Dark skin color"* and that from century B.C, the Himyarite arabs mixed with the indigenous of the North africa became the *"SANHAJA"* one of the largest indigenous tribe.... Yousef ibn Tashfin and his cousin Abu baker ibn Umar were both Sanhaj tribe of the Almurabitun dynasty who fought against the coalition Christian army led by Alfonso VI....
I hope I gave you a summary of the Amazigh means and you will go seek more.... Today, berbers' Identities in the Maghreb is a *"CONCOCTION"* of colonial France who couldn't take their defeat in the Maghreb.... *"divide and conquer."* In 1967 FRANCE, with the so-called *"berbers",* the anti-Islam, anti-arab, "and Algerians pro-colonialism DIASPORA, created a mixage of TUAREG SCRIPTS AND OLD HIMYARITE ARABIC SCRIPTS just to say KABYLI Berbers are a distinct berber and only indigenous tribe of the Maghreb.
*"Berber"* was a greek word meaning *"savage strangers".* Romans, Vandales, aethiopeos (dark skin from the North alongside of the coast of the RED SEA to the Eritrean sea) were called Berbers in some times by the Greeks....
