Gather round, kids. I remember this trailer was an 80mb file and it took forever on my ADSL to download. As someone who played through Halo CE maybe a hundred times on the ol XBOX with my bro and neighbour, I would watch this trailer everyday like an obsessed fan boy who couldn't bare to wait another day for the game to come out. When it finally did come out in fancy its metallic case, it couldn't live up to the hype of my imagination, and it was nothing like the awesomeness of this demo, and then I saw the DVD content of behind the scenes creation where the Devs are glum and frustrated and literally saying "the game is not good" and then I played until the New mumbasa level and I was thinking, holy crap the graphics are worse than halo 1 and the city is so bland. A lot of people love halo 2 but for me halo 2 was this demo.
Indeed, the pre launch hype for Halo 2 and Halo 3 was insane. That kind of stuff just doesnt happen anymore, the 90s and first decade of 2000s were the golden years of gaming
Yup, just after making this demo they came to the realization that the launch spec Xbox could not handle the graphics they were pulling here and had to nearly recreate the entire graphical engine hence why its launch was pushed back. Beyond this demo you can see evidence of this in the cutscene where Chief "gives the covenant back their bomb". In that room it still had a large majority of the graphics effects not used in actual gameplay
Its crazy how much better the lighting engine was in the e3 demo build. The lighting in the shipped version of h2 and in this mod looks so much less complete. Really paints a picture of how the game was intended to look...
I remember when those rocker gamer chairs with the built in speakers were coming out, Sears had a a demo unit with this playing. my parents let me watch it 3 times in a row. by that i mean they left me alone and christmas shopped while i zombied out on the chair. they actually got me a rocker chair for christmas that year, never used it once lol
This made me wonders if Bungie weren't limited by original Xbox hardware, they could have delivered Doom 3 inspired stencil shadow game engine. It checks the cinematic feels when it has proper stencil shadow function.
They definitely could have if they waited for 360. The stencil shadows were cut sometime between e3 2002 and e3 2003. For the 03 demo they had already shifted to shadow volumes instead of stencils, hence why the original demo has softer shadows than 2002.
If development had moved to the 360 I'm sure. Doom 3 did release on the OG Xbox. But obviously doom 3 environments are a bit smaller than the average halo map lol. Plus all the scripting, AI, physics etc of "the sandbox" going on at the same time. I'm surprised they ever thought the OG xbox would be able to handle it. There is a interesting mod for Halo 2 MCC on the steam workshop (and the nexus) called "halo 2 lighting restored". It dose not re enable stencil shadows (haven't seen any mod that dose, I think it was cut to early), but it dose make WAY more of the lights in the game dynamic lights giving the whole game a look closer to this E3 demo.
Man, I really wish they could patch this into the console version of MCC. I don't play steam myself. But I've been a Halo fan since the beginning with CE. Fingers crossed they can do that at some point.
If you have a pc and happen to have gamepass you can download the mod off nexusmods and play it that way. Halo 2 can run on some pretty potato hardware. But the lighting hacks we did to make it look like the original demo will cause framerate drops on lower end hardware when in cutscenes.

People don't realize how big of a deal this was at the time.
Indeed, the pre launch hype for Halo 2 and Halo 3 was insane. That kind of stuff just doesnt happen anymore, the 90s and first decade of 2000s were the golden years of gaming
@@Balnazzardi exactly. Now it's just pre-download and nothing else
The demo looked so much better than the final game. 👍
Can’t wait to play the “demo mod”!
Or just install the "Halo 2 restored lighting" mod from the steam workshop. Makes the whole game have this kind of lighting.
@sean8102 That does add back in the dynamic lighting and such but doesn't do necessarily all that was in the E3 build
@@hiRyan329329Where can I find that scene of master chief ‘giving back the bomb’ ?

SO THAT’S WHERE BET YOU CAN’T STICKEM’ COMES FROM!!! 🤯🤯🤯
I remember this day. Also thought the graphics were so good that I wondered how it could get much better from this. Same with RE1REMAKE GC
I remember the hype about this game i love halo 2
😢 I miss an amazing experience in HALO game
ahh memories
Oh how far we've come
Omg halo 2?, noooo way, I’m sooo excited.
Its crazy how much better the lighting engine was in the e3 demo build. The lighting in the shipped version of h2 and in this mod looks so much less complete. Really paints a picture of how the game was intended to look...
Wow! This looks so realistic! I can't wait!!!
Man, those were the days dude.....
Damn when i was a kid i used to wish to play that e3 now thanks to the modders i'm witnessing childhood dreams
now....Dear Ubisoft? Can we have your E3 Demos please? :D
This. I wanna try out their E3 Demo of Future Soldier.
Finally!! 20 years later :')
Looks good, when is it coming out again?
IGN ready to give it a SIX and a HALF!
At 2:50 the corporal said coño. That's real Dominican talk bro. Im impressed. Real life Marine Corp attitude. Semper Fi.

@@killzone64what means stencil shadowing?
I was so mad this mission wasn't playable growing up.
@killzone64 I appreciate the uodate. I don't have a PC for gaming though. I got like a 10 year old laptop just for documents and emails lol
I still remember that night halo 2 launched. And I remember playing halo 1 outside the GameStop trying to win a free copy of the game.
I think they are just 1 hit wonder. Dont think sequel will work
.
I bet whatever company takes over halo after them doesn't suck and makes games way better than bungie ever could

What a way to say "all footage recorded in-game".
