The Future of Design

  • SpaceX is exploring methods for engineers to accelerate their workflow by designing more directly in 3D. We are integrating breakthroughs in sensor and visualization technologies to view and modify designs more naturally and efficiently than we could using purely 2D tools. We are just beginning, but eventually hope to build the fastest route between the idea of a rocket and the reality of the factory floor. Special thanks to Leap Motion, Siemens and Oculus VR, as well as NVIDIA, Projection Design, Provision, and to everyone enabling and challenging the world to interact with technology in exciting new ways.

      There are so many CAD software, they are advanced since the 80s already. The simulation hand interface is not that important, you can use a device for it to visualize, again old technology. The problem with most CAD software is the integration in large assemblies, they are all very slow at large scale.

    • @stephenworsley
      @stephenworsley 3 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Most of their engineers will be using a mouse/space mouse combo. If you use CAD you know this is a gimmick and not practical for designing 10 hours a day. VR might be used too for visualisation/reviews but not actually design.

    It was mentioned before and I agree; this hand gesture thing actually feels way more clumsy than the precision you can achieve with keyboard and mouse. It's like trying to write with your fingertips instead of using a pen or a sharp pencil. I think the focus should be on the 3d visualisation while still using appropriate tools for the interaction.

      I could also imagine it getting quite exhausting waiving your hand around in mid air, instead of resting it comfortably on a desk while using a mouse. VR would make a better use case for hand gesturing because it feels more natural to real life... But then again you'd still have to worry about fatigue, so I think working with both traditional computers and in VR would be the best situation

      glad someone has pointed this out, amidst people just cheering. it's ok to view the design, but to actually create it? you need a precise pointer, that rests while you leave it, in the first place, and the hands are unstable, you need to select from dozens of tools too, through many menus, etc.. the existing interface - keyboard and mouse has its drawbacks but for 3d creation, other tools than hand gestures would be more effective. I, in fact, designed something for that cause, but the funds, people I met were not interested.

    As a 3D modeler and designer for 9 years, this interface only looks cool. Using it for production would be torture. Once your elbow and wrist aren't resting on something, all benefits are lost. Try it: Hold your hands up in the air for eight hours. Hold them up for ten minutes even.
    A lot of this stuff is for show. Clients don't need to be strapped into an Oculus to understand a design.
    3D printing is oversold. Print your own hardware. No more Home Depot! People can already grow their own food. Yet, look at all these grocery stores and restaurants.
    Not to be a downer. We just can't be distracted. Mars or bust.

      I agree, for presentations this stuff is terrific. In some cases would eliminate the need for a mockup to show clients.

      Agreed, these "orchestra conductor's moves" are impressive for house wives; for professionals, a keyboard and a mouse would suffice.

      Wild Academy 3d modeling on a computer...sure, this won't probably ever be as precise as what a tablet and stylus can do, but 3d printing stuff is how prototypes and even finished products will be made in the future, as it gets cheaper and cheaper.

      Wild Academy I wanted to reply with a post just like yours, but I'll just second this :p I've worked with the Leap Motion as well (which is fun, but hell for precise (3D) work) and the Oculus Rift, which doesn't really add something to 3D modeling. As a 3D modeler, I don't see myself working with this, so I don't see how it's a break through - apart from that it looks really awesome.

      Wild Academy I think it will come along. Obviously the whole arms and hand thing isn't the correct way to operate a 3d model in virtual space. But actually, this is really a greater problem of Virtual Reality. The mouse solved the problem of 2d design on a bitmap screen, the interface for virtual reality has yet to be invented. Maybe it'll be more along the brain interface path, but until then, we still need something. Why not hold some kind of ball with buttons on it that gyro sensors or something, and a mouthguard with buttons for extra toungue controls (sounds weird i know).
