Are you meaning that switch games are really bad or Paper Mario are really good? Note: this was the first paper mario I had (but I played Super Paper Mario) I loved it. I want to play the thousand year door now.
Well I mean, first 2 paper mario games were the turn based ones, spm was the platformer, and the next 2 were turn based but you have use cards/stickers, they're all different but when the devs think they can push an idea further they make another before changing it up again, I do get what you mean though.
i'm still mad that in another interview they said they are limited to mario characters. there are OTHER mario characters you could use as NPC's from super mario sunshine, galaxy, odyssey, but ill give them the benefit of the doubt that they can't use those characters
I also understand that there are probably legal reasons that the general player base doesn’t see but they could still reuse old paper Mario characters or even make up new memorable characters.
Not really, badges function like badges. The level up system is the max up hearts. Unlike syicker star, where they only increase your health, the max up hearts in TOK increase your health, increase your attack, and over time allow you to kill certain enemies on the overworld without entering battle
@@randominternetuser5872 because it felt like I had to fight all enemies to get xp and that annoyed me. Not that I didn't enjoyed the games, I just didn't liked to much about fighting enemies over and over to get xp. Now you don't need to fight all enemies if you don't want to.
I feel like in the battle system, instead of Leveling up and getting stronger like a normal rpg, you "level up" your puzzle skills and quick decision making and it definitely rewards you for it by satisfyingly attacking a row of enemy all at once.
Personally origami king is my absolute favorite game of all time, I really like seeing how others think of it (even if they don’t like it). I find others perspectives very interesting and cool!
I subscribed and liked your epic i started watching you yesterday the first video i watched was the one about Nintendo land i hope you can keep on creating more awesome content you have potential honestly so keep on going and never give up
Hear me out, they can't copy the thousand year door every 4 years, so what i feel Tanabe is tryna say is that we need new experiences, and as much as we love the thousand year door, if nintendo keeps saying "here's the thousand year door", then yeah, then we would get bored
So true, I like the original worlds (also the music there is the best in the game). Pretty much the worlds you said in the video and some more. Yet I played this one after Spm so that influenced me and I got feeling of disappointment when I played this game, with its good things it still luck many things in gameplay, characters and story. I will say that the music fine in my opinion, its just my taste but I liked Spm music much more. With all of that still good game, yet I dont like the direction that the series going to.
eh I think Origami King's world's are better than Color Splash I do like Color Splash world and there are some that are unique but in my opinion Origami King has more unique world also 15:33 Sticker Star and Color Splash has New Super Mario Bros Worlds not Origami King, and World 1 for Origami King is not lazy because 1. every Paper Mario game and every Mario game starts with a grass level, 2. Origami King's World 1 is unique in my opinion because it's called Picnic Road the grass I think is yellowish-green and it a grassland-mountain, 20:50 Olivia is funny,
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE oh sorry. Got a little bit excited.
Paper Mario fan base: We want original characters Nintendo: Ok we will make it so non of the characters are original instead they must be characters already created Paper Mario fan base: that’s not what we wanted Nintendo:We don’t care
Am I the only person in the world that doesn't hate this game despite playing the first 3 titles? I don't see this at all as a failure, I love this game more than Super Paper Mario at least. People judge the battle system for the worst reason when this is finally a different mechanic than just Mario on the left and 2 enemies on the right, I genuinely enjoyed it having to think a bit more plus the bosses were really fun, every one of them had a unique mechanic that kept the ring-style from going stale. Olivia is my favorite traveling partner for Paper Mario, she is adorable and naive to a fault, I can't hate her for being new to a world that she just started to learn about, it makes it more fun than having a know-it-all with you all the way. Yes the game uses some generic world themes as usual(exception being shogun studios), but they all have a unique twist to them that makes them standout more, like the desert having no sun, and a spa in the sky with a jungle and Bowser's Castle having crashed into it. There are other reasons I love this game too, but I can't list them all, some I don't know how to put into words. Keep in mind I've played the TTYD and SPM several times, so don't assume I'm not aware of a few things this game could've taken from its RPG roots.
im just gonna be honest, i dont think ivce ever used a single healing item due to enemies you fight, ive only ever used it once because OVERWORLD HAZARDS did more damage to me then the actual enemies
In the Mario and Luigi games it said the number of damage u did and the enemies didn’t have health bars…and Super Paper Mario had that too I guess but u can scan them BUT they don’t have health bars so nitpick
Exactly, and honestly I feel like some of the challenge in the battles is experimenting with the different degrees of weaponry you equip along the way to discover what weapon can kill which enemy on your own instead of just having the life bar give it away
This game really messes up what it does right, and somehow polishes its lameness to perfection (with an exception of the soundtrack, the music is good and there’s no denying that). I don’t get how they screwed up the battle system in a bunch of ways with its potential. I can’t imagine designing the office supplies the way that the developers did. I hate that world 3 is the extremes of dead where you’re just driving around a desert for hours then going to Shroom City which is amazing but even then they still messed that up because you can’t do much there. Btw something you should’ve mentioned was the final boss. The game legit gives you boots and a hammer right before it, and you don’t even get to use it. It was extremely underwhelming in the gameplay department, and felt much more anti-climactic than it should’ve been. If you could sum this game up in one word, it’s controversy. It really depends on how you value the things that the game does. For me, the rights and wrongs just cancel each other out. But just as I was optimistic for this game, I’ll still be optimistic for the next. This game imo wasn’t bad nor good overall, and I’m hoping that the next will have more going for it.
This game is especially infuriating for if you look in just the right places, every single complaint is catered to in the worst way possible as if the creators of this wanted to rebel but couldn’t. The lack of a deep turn-based system? They have the turn based system and it’s deep, but it’s also deeply repetitive. The lack of party members? You technically have one but it’s only for every single area. They don’t even attack on command, or even do a Miitopia-like event where your automatically-attacking partners learn new skills that may reflect their abilities even though that still wouldn’t solve this problem. You also have Olivia, but she’s vexing either because she is too naive or because she dies because she is a new character. Character depth? You have Bobby, who is lazy but loyal and somehow his sacrifice is deeply moving, but you never get that again. Olly doesn’t count because he is completely genocidal for a stupid reason. The NPCs are at least not just Toads but they still don’t stand out, and the Toads, while relegated to quirky revealings, are still just Toads and not Toads in a believable world. New characters? You get them but it’s all quickly reverted back. The same goes for unique enemies who are undone by the death of Stapler. A talking silly Bowser? You get him but only in the beginning and the end. Depending on the person, some may count the fact he doesn’t do much as a flaw. Unique environments? You do get them, but they are merely variants of the same eight worlds without any good style. Snif City, the most unique, is naturally reverted given Hole Puncher possessed all the Toads by punching out their faces. The next most unique, Shanghai-Spa, has a distinctly Jungle area. At least they do mix it up nicely. Memorable bosses? Yes, they are memorable, but that is only because each bosses has a one-note personality (if part of a Legion of Stationary) and a unique gimmick that somehow 10 bosses do not seem to make stale. It does not make up for anything else, and they’re still gone per the “no new characters except from mainline Mario” rule. Different powers as for customizability? You have jumps and hammers, the only two reliable things. Since both work nicely, all other options will almost never be used except deliberately. The Vellumentals are unique summons but they are all part of the puzzles and you’re going to be using the Earth Vellumental the most. And while you can do different things each turn you are roughly going to be performing the same actions overall. (for example, the Rubber Band boss you will always be looking to stretch it really far with the 1000-fold hands each turn then fling it far with the last hit.) Even the badges only affect how you line up the characters or is a mere HP boost or timer boost. It does not meaningfully change you options in battle. Collectibles? Yes, but they are the Toads so you still have problems. Visuals? As always, they are neat, and this time dramatic, but that style is always traumatic for many old-time fans. New situations? Yes, but none that are permanent or imposing. The scary trees turn out to just sing. Snif City is undone. The ocean is a downgraded Wind Walker’s first half. The final castle is imposing but is necessarily temporary. The amusement park isn’t amusing when you go back. The spa has neat baths but after those events they feel like flavor. Background lore? It’s there, but it’s just one story related to the ancient Captain. Different designed NPCs, party members, and enemies? Bobby only lacks a fuse (but at least it’s well-executed). The ancient Captain and the Archaeologist Toad are the exceptions that prove the rule and harken to previous usages to well-dressed NPCs (the previous archaeological NPCs and the reference to previous games’ usage of it). Olivia and the enemies are differently designed but they’re different, and your main enemies are just flavored standard enemies (though the bosses are all unique). They give you everything in just the worst way. That is why this game is so contentious. This is the most well-polished turd and the most well-sculpted turd, it would be art if it were not clear it were a turd.
I personally thought that the second game was far worse in terms of pacing, especially in the third, fourth and sixth chapters. The only point where I think this game slogged at the pacing was in the beginning, which was acceptable because it was similar to holding a child's hand before they get to school.
I don’t get why everybody hates colour splash, it was an amazing game to me with such funny characters and I replayed it like literally 3 times. Twice 100%ed and once just doing random stuf
I don't hate Color Splash, but my God it is just not a game I'd ever want to revisit. Sure, the set pieces, environments, writing, all of that, it's definitely a big step up from Sticker Star, but gameplay wise it is literally just Sticker Star 2. There are no differences between the sticker system and the card system. They're the exact same thing. If anything, cards are even worse because of how obnoxiously gimmicky they are in comparison to stickers. Add to that a next-to-meaningless combat system where the dominant strategy is to literally NOT engage with it at all, and it's not hard to see why people were pissed.
I love this game a lot. But I hate when people say this is the darkest paper Mario game. HAVE THEY PLAYED SUPER AT ALL. But those interviews make me cringe so hard
I think they say that it's the darkest because of all of the body horror used in the game, it makes sense when putting yourself in the perspectives of these people in paper.
There is unfortunately so much to talk about. What is good? What is bad? Is the literal version of turn-based gameplay a neat optimization minipuzzle or a slog? And if you enjoy the battle system, do you like only the bosses or the system in its entirety? Are the characterizations clever and memorable or the same wacky characters? How sad (meaning frustrating) is it that all the unique characters die given that an interview reveals that a rule to never use anything but mainline characters is enforced? Is Snif City a unique innovation or just a temporary gimmick given it goes away when Hole Puncher does? Is Bobby a nice subversion of “the unique Bob-omb character” that has depth and uses its subtle design to convey that or just a reminder of how closely all Paper Mario games hew to counterproductive standards? Finally, is it the best of the worst (meaning it’s lumped with Sticker Star), worst of the best (lumped with the true RPGs and possibly Super Paper Mario), unique and one of the best (meaning comparable to TTYD and 64, or if you pick up on the fact that the story is one of its incontestable strengths Super Paper Mario), or part of some other arbitrary ranking since there are 6! types of Paper Mario fans, 7! if you lump in Bug Fables?
I love this game, but I never played a Paper Mario game so idk if it's really good Edit: When you say it's not hard, are you just joking? No? I'm the only one bad at games then? Oh. Ok.
You might want to walk back 6. "Open World", I know this is a tad old but, at no point do you have the option to go at the bosses in any order. It is actually quite linear as it was with the previous 2. However... the worlds themselves are quite big in size only with a handful of NPCs to talk to and more coins to gather for more items or a badge if you really wanted more useless money. It doesn't at least stay its welcome for too long as you eventually repair each place you visit and the hub. Otherwise you've made a great video that reminds me of Weekend Warrior in style and vocal tone oddly enough. Tremendous, best videos out there, you couldn't find a better one like it. I'd say this video is a great time capsule of what people thought of the game when it released and why many are still heated about what Tanabe did. Might subscribe because of this video.

Forgot to mention you are NOT allowed to use powerups
Forgot to ALSO mention that in Zen Garden, you can ONLY GROW Marogolds, nothing else
8:53 guess what you can do for a message at the end of the game
Great analysis! Wonder what would be your thoughts on Bug Fables now that you've covered Origami King
As a paper mario game, not very good. As a game, one of the best on the switch, definitely my top 10
Very stark contrast 😂
Are you meaning that switch games are really bad or Paper Mario are really good? Note: this was the first paper mario I had (but I played Super Paper Mario) I loved it. I want to play the thousand year door now.
@@Martin-fb9pb I meant that as it didnt really stay true to the series, but it was still an awesome game.
Well I mean, first 2 paper mario games were the turn based ones, spm was the platformer, and the next 2 were turn based but you have use cards/stickers, they're all different but when the devs think they can push an idea further they make another before changing it up again, I do get what you mean though.
Best out of the Modern series
Bowser did talk in Color Splash, Sir
He did, that's why I loved color splash way more than sticker star cause he didn't talk once in that game.
Nobody ever wants to remember the good stuff from Color Splash 😭
@@lazilyymade To be fair, it's kinda difficult to "remember"
something when so few people _actually_ experienced it.
@@King_Luigi it really is a tragedy because color splash really does deserve more love. I honestly wish it would get ported to the switch
The black possessed paint talk, not Bowser himself.
Thise channels is getting more professional, good job!
i'm still mad that in another interview they said they are limited to mario characters. there are OTHER mario characters you could use as NPC's from super mario sunshine, galaxy, odyssey, but ill give them the benefit of the doubt that they can't use those characters
I also understand that there are probably legal reasons that the general player base doesn’t see but they could still reuse old paper Mario characters or even make up new memorable characters.
The badge system is sort of a level-up system
@YÜGEEPIE38 but the easiest way to get coins is via battling and the overworld coins are limited. Sooo
DashingIb yea I agree idk what the other person means. Battling gives waaay more coins than not battling
Yeah honestly the game doesn’t rlly need a level up system because coins are a fine enough reward.
Not really, badges function like badges. The level up system is the max up hearts. Unlike syicker star, where they only increase your health, the max up hearts in TOK increase your health, increase your attack, and over time allow you to kill certain enemies on the overworld without entering battle
@@chickennoodlegamer915 that id true yes. But the accessories work more like a level up system because you "exchange something for better stats"
Danerade should make a video on Psychonauts
I have lost all hope in ever seeing Paper Mario return to form. Might as well play Bug Fables instead.
Rlly like ur reviews danerade. Keep up the good work.
0:49 bruh we have the same carpet
To be honest, I'm glad they take off the xp thing.
@Jovanni Ramsey Well then, eat me!! EAT ME AS YOU CAN!!! I'm not sorry!!!
Why? I would like to understand why you disliked the exp system?
@@randominternetuser5872 because it felt like I had to fight all enemies to get xp and that annoyed me. Not that I didn't enjoyed the games, I just didn't liked to much about fighting enemies over and over to get xp. Now you don't need to fight all enemies if you don't want to.
@@rocbenaa1963 but now, without the exp, What's the point of fighting other than to waste your time?
Chronicle Zombie to get coins to buy more badges and weapons. Battling is the easiest way to get coins not just finding them around the world btw
I feel like in the battle system, instead of Leveling up and getting stronger like a normal rpg, you "level up" your puzzle skills and quick decision making and it definitely rewards you for it by satisfyingly attacking a row of enemy all at once.
Origami king was realised awhile ago now but I remember a few things one was bowser at the start of the game just thinking he’s god
Sorry for so many comments but of course Color Splash has more interesting areas because there’s like 40 of them
Bowser DID talk in Color Splash

I just want super paper mario virtual console
eh I think Origami King's world's are better than Color Splash I do like Color Splash world and there are some that are unique but in my opinion Origami King has more unique world also 15:33 Sticker Star and Color Splash has New Super Mario Bros Worlds not Origami King, and World 1 for Origami King is not lazy because 1. every Paper Mario game and every Mario game starts with a grass level, 2. Origami King's World 1 is unique in my opinion because it's called Picnic Road the grass I think is yellowish-green and it a grassland-mountain, 20:50 Olivia is funny,
your jokes remind me a lot of scott the woz, very nice.
That's what I was thinking
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE oh sorry. Got a little bit excited.

@@jackotherstar yes make it longer. You're not the only one to feel that way :)

Nintendo: Ok we will make it so non of the characters are original instead they must be characters already created
Paper Mario fan base: that’s not what we wanted
Nintendo:We don’t care
I want a soup review
I spent way to much time playing this game danerade is poaggers btw
Great video as always!
Amen. This game was fun. That is the only thing that mattered to me.
"We were no longer able to graphically represent characteristics."
But why?
Keep in mind I've played the TTYD and SPM several times, so don't assume I'm not aware of a few things this game could've taken from its RPG roots.
danerade: WOW, 19 and 12 are SOOO big
i think i heard the theme park was based on an actual theme park in japan.

Sticker star was my first paper Mario game
im just gonna be honest, i dont think ivce ever used a single healing item due to enemies you fight, ive only ever used it once because OVERWORLD HAZARDS did more damage to me then the actual enemies
I really liked the part were all of those youtubers just came out of nowere to say:ONLY TOADS
Theres some stuff that's taken out of context
Hi, can you make a video about how angry birds was ruined?
I'm hyped for this but I can't join
So the real enemy in this game is Nintendo themselves-
Great video! I can definitely see you becoming a big youtuber in the future!
Origami king and color splash realky need more love
So basically like the first three games.
I personally thought that the second game was far worse in terms of pacing, especially in the third, fourth and sixth chapters. The only point where I think this game slogged at the pacing was in the beginning, which was acceptable because it was similar to holding a child's hand before they get to school.
21:37 *She's the one boys, that's a JoJo character if I've ever seen one*

25:52 Why should I take your word? Where is that interview? At least put it in the description so people can check.
You need more views.
Some people don’t like ttyd I’m not one of them but still it’s surprising
They just hate us dont they
I don’t get why everybody hates colour splash, it was an amazing game to me with such funny characters and I replayed it like literally 3 times. Twice 100%ed and once just doing random stuf
It’s too close to Sticker Star and tries too hard for self-aware humor. It does have positives, but most people who hates it cite those reasons.
8:09 were did the I don't like were this going, STOP, STOP come form.

25:49 how is he “neglecting” criticism in this quote? This snippet ain’t even the whole interview!
I see somebody has been watching ZackScott.
It's not that long. Arlo talked about it for the equivalent of a full length movie.
And those are just the obvious topics. The Origami King is so contentious that every single part can be nitpicked and made into an argument.
@@iantaakalla8180 Wow! Thanks for the replies. I read every single word!

Not the paper Mario game we wanted, but a good game nonetheless.
I guess
The best way to enjoy Origami King, do what I did. It’s my first Paper Mario game. If you’ve played the original and Thousand year door, well that sucks, you probably hate this installment.
