    If I may say something about the rant regarding king Olly, the reason of his anger about the scribble on his chest is the fact that writing on origami is sometimes considered to be taboo, thus making Olly think the Toad who crafted him only did so to make a living mockery of the art form.

    • @helfire14

      It'd make sense to come to that conclusion, considering the guy apparently had all of those 'forbidden origami tools' around his workshop. Like, it's taboo to use things like staplers and tape on your origami, too. Maybe he just had them for other things? Still.

      It doesn't immediately come to mind, granted - we're not made of paper like 90% of the characters in the game are - but I can always appreciate writing that lets me use my imagination to fill in certain details, gives me something that doesn't occur to me the first couple of times I think about it, then suddenly hits me one day. Origami King is the perfect example of so close and yet so far. They got almost everything right, and honestly, if they don't wanna bring EXP back, I thought of a nice alternative they could try to give players a progression system while, ahem, 'not returning the series to its RPG routes'. Like, maybe there could be special blue/red coins that could only be obtained from fighting random enemies. These coins could be used in gyms scattered across the world where you pay the owner to let Mario work out on one of three or four machines, each one used to upgrade a certain stat. Like, you can increase his HP by 5, or increase FP (If they ever decide to bring that back) by 5, an maybe there could be one where you can increase his strength by one point of damage for a much higher cost, and another for increasing defense, and for each time you increase a certain stat, the cost for the next increase goes up.

    For anyone reading this; you should play bug fables for a game in the style of the first two PMs with a bit of mario and luigi mixed in. It’s amazing, and really scratched my itch for one of those games. (I still love origami king though, just for different reasons)

  • @goldenyoshistar1
    @goldenyoshistar1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    To be honest, I feel Like Origami King definitely fits in the category of the third game of a series always being the best.
    Paper Mario 64 and Sticker Star are the first games of their series and the ones that have the most simplistic gameplay elements. most of it is played safe and usually doesn't go to far ahead.
    TTYD and Color Splash both improve what their previous games did and make what made their first games good (in a sense) better.
    Then we have Super Paper Mario and Origami King. Both flip their gameplays by altering everything. These games have the best story out of any game, their gameplay is completely different than their previous games, and are usually the ones that are slightly in the darker territory.
    Although I have never really beaten color splash, I've beaten the other 5 and I'd still put Origami King higher than TTYD. Which would put my stance as a bit biased, but there are things that TTYD has that honestly I don't care about and I feel like Origami King did those far better than TTYD. The Paper Mario Franchise is a fairly difficult subject to talk about as you are going to get people on both sides.
    It's the same with Luigi's Mansion. You have fans who praise the first game, a good bit of them will "beat down" those who like the other 2 games. And then you have Dark Moon fans (like an unmentionable youtuber who did an abridged series on it) who is more likely to criticize or even mock those who like the first game. The third game is unique in that it has its own fans but a good bit of the ones who like it, don't really attack those who prefer Dark Moon or the Original. Heck, Paper Mario and Luigi's Mansion are almost the same in their own right. Both fanbases have those who are toxic to those who disagree with the opposing opinion. I am a devout Dark Moon Fan and I even made it my opinion as I played through all 3 games so I can see what the people see in the OG game and then best thing the OG game had was honestly Boolossous, which is sad.
    Going back to King Olly as a villain, excluding his reasoning behind why he did what he did, I feel like he was honestly a perfect representation of someone who was pissed at the last 2 Paper Mario Games, with Olivia being the perfect representation of someone who wants to love and enjoy all Paper Mario Games and wants both sides to live in harmony. This is honestly why I feel like the next Paper Mario Games needs to do something major and combine elements from multiple previous games to make it better.
    Take 64 and Sticker Star. Imagine a classic style of gameplay, but Stickers can be used to temporarily buff up attacks or even change the way they work. For example, a Jump Sticker would allow Mario to jump on an enemy 3 times. or a Flame Hammer Sticker would allow Mario to give his Hammer Attacks a Fire-element property. The 7th Paper Mario Game, or at least the next 3 games needs to take the stuff the original trilogy did right, and what the modern trilogy did right and combine it together.
    I'd personally be glad for another Mario and Luigi game, but I know its a dead franchise, so if Paper Mario has to improve, it has to improve on both sides. The OG's need to find ways to talk it out with the Modern's and create an idea of a perfect Paper Mario Game. We have voices right? So why not instead of bitching about not getting out Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door version 420, update 69, featuring Luigi Mode, and talk about doing something that works with both the new and the old. Classic gameplay and modern elements can work. It's just that the fanbase needs to be willing to work together with those who disagree with them.
    Still, my order of Paper Mario games is honestly due to how much fun I had with them, and honestly, Origami King is number 1, with Super and 64 at second and third respectfully. TTYD is 4th with sticker star at 5th, and color splash at 6th place. Still this is before I replay Super and Sticker Star, and then beat Color Splash finally, before my stance changes, so that is my stance on the games.

      1) Origami king
      2) Super
      3) color splash/64
      4) ttyd
      5)sticker star
      Origami king is a blast to play,the battle system is original and entertaining,and the music and characters are top notch. Super has the best story out of the 6 games,and the best out of all the Mario sidescrollers. Color Splash is also pretty fun and 64 is perfect for only being the 1st instalment. TTYD is also great,but some of the ideas are litterally copy-pasted from 64(peach is captured in space,most of the partners have the same attacks of 64's partners and other things)and that damn backtracking in chapter 4 and to find General White it's just too much. Sticker Star still is the weakest in the series because is on 3ds,that's it.

    I feel like this game makes more poor design decisions then even Color Splash. For example, whenever I explore, I never get anything of value, only collectables, coins, Toads that don’t do anything, and weapons that are arbitrarily added for challenge. I remember exploring Color Splash and being rewarded with unique and new cards that help in battle or optional things! It was rewarding... kinda. There were also toads to colorize and rescue in Color Splash that actually did stuff. Rescuing the rescue the rescue squad to progress. TTYD and N64 had the partner upgrades, items, star pieces, badges, and more. Those games still have much more rewarding exploration.
    Along with that, unlike literally every other Paper Mario game, this game never leaves you wondering what is left to explore. When the player first starts Sticker Star and sees the world map, so much is blocked off and it gets your imagination wild. Color Splash amplified this idea! The first three games didn’t have maps, but still blocked off several areas that made you very curious. This game doesn’t really do that and feels extremely linear because of that. There’s no hub and that is lame.
    The battles always suck. They always involve the same puzzles that get extremely repetitive. The whole appeal of the first 2 games’ combat was how it was open towards experimentation and customization! The only time Origami King has this are during the bosses, which most of them I actually enjoyed. However, the bosses can just end up being trial and error in some cases; where Mario ends up failing, then healing, then failing, then healing, the figuring out the puzzle, then repeat strategy. Back to regular battles, in Color Splash and even Sticker Star the battles were very customizable, with a huge variety of stickers and cards. The battles are basic.
    The puzzles in this game are pretty lame. Earlier games challenged you by giving you several tools and asking you to figure out which one is the right one to use. Color Splash and Sticker Star even did this with the things and although not all of the puzzle were done well, at least many offered a challenge. In Origami King, Mario barely has any tools and it sucks because they have mechanics like the 1,000 fold arms and confetti that are never use cleverly.
    The story sucks... Olly is evil because... and apparently he feels remorse out of nowhere and is supposed to be redeemed even though he basically wanted to commit mass genocide on par with what Hitler would do. And the whole plot is started by a generic Toad without personality. Greeeeeat. Olivia duing at the end also feels like another generic tactic to try to get me to care, but it’s hard to care when this is the FITH TIME IN A ROW they try to pull this “a character now has to die because it’s the end of the game” sort of thing in a Paper Mario game. Say what you will about Bowser being the main villain in SS and CS, but at least the plot wasn’t promising something it couldn’t deliver on.
    OK is not only stealing the mechanic of rescuing toads and doing is worse, but is also stealing the paint mechanic and doing it worse. They do NOTHING with the confetti mechanic at all. They could have made it a valuable rare resource, one that you can get from only battle. They could have turned it into an FP system, where special attacks cost confetti. It’s just lame.
    Speaking of copying mechanics from Color Splash, Origami King is the only Paper Mario game to borrow so heavily from the previous game’s art style, making the game feel more similar to Color Splash than giving it a unique identity. For a game that is supposed to be a “return to form”, it really doesn’t look like it.
    This game also borrows a similar style of humor from as Color Splash. Remember those cute dace scenes in OK, they were also in CS. How about the Mario Kart reference with Luigi? That was also in CS. Shy Guy Finish Last??? Ok, they aren’t even trying anymore! That’s Snifit or Whifit from SS and CS! Can this game be anymore similar to CS and SS?!
    The generic character design also is borrowed from Color Splash. Why would they take one of the worse elements from CS and not fix it!? It’s so easy! I even see several dedicated fans in the internet come up with unique and interesting characters!
    Speaking of the characters, the partners are the only characters in the game and most of them are nothing special. Bobby lacks a unique design and purpose until the end. Professor Toad doesn’t have much personality and doesn’t have a name and he’s pretty forgettable in comparison to TTYD and PM64 characters. Kamek is very unoriginal and same goes for Bowser Jr. and having Bowser in your party is nothing special ‘cause we have seen this in Super and it feels really awkward spend time with Bowser and he never really references past events he had with Mario. Feels like the writers really want to retcon stuff from prior games ‘cause we also see how bomb-oms don’t even follow the same rules from the original game.
    In the end OK is just CS with better art, slightly new mechanics (new, not better), and that’s about it. Very disappointing.

    • @staticchimera44
      @staticchimera44 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alright, I disagree with most of your points so I'm gonna go through the ones I disagree the most with.
      The exploration, I think, is one of the best parts about Origami King. You talk about how there isn't much reward to exploring but that's personal preference. Finding collectibles and toads is fun for a lot of people. The Completionist, as an example, 100%ed the game TWICE and had a lot of fun during both playthroughs.
      For your second point, you mention that there is no hub. This is false, there is a building in toad town where there are a total of 6 pipes. You unlock these pipes as you go through the game, clearing them and allowing you to go through them. The game also has many moments where it leaves you wanting to explore. It shows you the volcano at the start of the game. At the beginning of the third "chapter," it shows the purple streamer over the ocean, which you continue following in the fourth "chapter." Bowser's Castle is a large area that is placed smackdab in the middle of the green streamer area that the player is constantly reminded about, which builds tension and makes you want to enter and explore it.
      I think the regular battle system is the worst part of the game but it's still not that bad. For puzzle solvers, solving many of these puzzles can be quite fun, and so your statement on how it's boring is subjective. Besides, even if the battle system was unplayable, it is heavily made up for by the variety of the puzzles and minigames scattered about the game. Gameplay is more than just battles. You also mention that a lot of the boss fights boil down to trial and error. I disagree. There are multiple hints that you can collect during battle that help you understand how to defeat the boss. There is no trial and error, there is always a clear goal in sight, it's just about how you get to that goal, which is the fun part. If you don't want to use the hints, then you're just making things harder for yourself aren't you?
      "The puzzles are lame." The puzzles are not lame. Your only argument for why the puzzles are lame is because Mario doesn't have any "tools." You don't need tools for good puzzles. Puzzles are... simply just that... puzzles. As long as they're fun, rack your brain, and are creative, they don't need tools. I'm not sure why that's such a large weakness for you.
      Who said Olly was supposed to be redeemed by the end? Did any of the characters be like "oh no, don't worry, we forgive you." The only one that showed any actual kind of emotion was Olivia, and that's because they're related. I agree that the Origami Craftsman is an underwhelming character but I don't see it as "the story was started from a boring, generic character," instead I see it as "this character is simply part of the main antagonist's backstory, and so they are simply a means to a start." I get that the "fifth time in a row" part is exaggerated, but it's still very untrue. Olivia is the only character to legitimately die after sacrificing themselves at the end. Kersti did something similar however she was revived immediately after, so there were no lasting consequences.
      I actually agree with the confetti part. There was one part of the game where confetti was treated as a limited resource, and I wish there were more moments like that, but yeah. Although filling in holes with confetti is pretty satisfying for some people (actually, most people considering how many people still fill in holes near the end game despite there being no reward other than coins) so at least it's not all bad. However, I do disagree with your point of Origami King doing the "rescuing toads" thing poorly. The toads are cleverly hidden with unique different forms after they fold. They also have very humorous dialogue and in general are very fun to look for and collect.
      I disagree with the argument that Origami King looks too much like Colour Splash, for multiple reasons. Although I'll just name one because I don't want to make an essay about this one point. Colour Splash's background is drawn, to make the game feel more like it's inside of a box than an open world. Origami King doesn't have these kinds of backgrounds, which makes it have a different feel and aesthetic than Colour Splash.
      Ok this point has to be a joke. The Mario Kart and Shy Guys Finish Last moments are not "humour." The Mario Kart thing is just a reference to Mario Kart, and the Shy Guys Finish Last is just a minigame. If you want to talk about humour, there are multiple other aspects that you have deliberately ignored just to support your claim. Bobby's slapstick during Autumn Mountain? The back and forth between Kamek and Bowser Jr? Bowser's entire presence? You didn't think any of that was original or at the very least entertaining?
      The "unoriginal character designs" thing is a meme at this point. There are a multitude of interesting looking characters in Origami King that people just forget exist. To name a few, there are the can food party crew, captain t. ode, the cosplayers at shogun studios, etc.
      Alright, time to deal with your arguments on the partners of the game. Yes, Bobby lacks an interesting design, that's the entire point, did you not see his backstory? And the fact that he only has an important role at the end is the entire point, I'm not sure you're even following the story. Professor Toad I agree with. Even among us Origami King fans, we think that Professor Toad is very underwhelming. I don't think a single Origami King fan will tell you that he's a good character (although I will take this opportunity to say that TTYD partners weren't that interesting, many of them had bland personalities and then we also had Flurrie). Are you really going to say that Kamek and Bowser Jr are unoriginal? Really? When they possess some of the best dialogue in the game, you're really going to call them unoriginal? I tell you this, Kamek and Bowser Jr are a more entertaining dynamic than anything you can find in TTYD. Having Bowser in your party isn't meant to be special due to it being new, it's meant to be special because it represents the endgame. Bowser has some of the best dialogue in the game, and that alone makes him worthy of being a good partner. Also, is your biggest problem really the fact that Bowser doesn't reference past Paper Mario games? Why would Bowser reference those events? Anyway, you came to the conclusion that they just want to ignore the previous games right? Well there's an entire room in "chapter" 3 that disproves this. In this room, multiple portraits of Peach from previous Paper Mario games are hung up, and Bobby makes a reference to Bobbery. ALSO, I've talked about this a lot before so I'll keep this super quick now. Your point about bob-ombs not working like they do in the original game. This isn't actually Origami King's fault. If you look back at TTYD, you can actually fight bob-ombs in battle, and what do you think happens once they explode? That's right, they DIE. It's not that Origami King changed the rules, it's that TTYD was inconsistent with the rules to begin with. TTYD is the one at fault here.

    • @nickk3077
      @nickk3077 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@staticchimera44 I think exploring the world is very unfulfilling because when compared to all of the previous games, none of the rewards here matter. None of them help you in battle and feel like a waste of my time.
      I'd hardly consider Toad Town a hub here. You don't even return to it once you have finished a chapter. Unlike in the first 3 Paper Mario games, it doesn't really block off progress so that when you return it feels like you there is much to explore. I remember when I played TTYD for the first time wondering what could be behind the west side of Rogueport or what was south of Toad Town in PM64. Origami King blocks off the sea in its hub and that's about it. It was honestly kind of awkward when I had to return to Toad Town because it felt very inconsistent with how the rest of the game was designed.
      Ok, I will admit that I didn't go in depth with every point that I made... but this is a TH-cam comment after all. I had no clue if anyone would actually read all of my points. I digress. When I was refering to the puzzles, I was talking about the puzzles in the overworld. There really wasn't a single puzzle that I recalled in the overworld that felt very satisfying to figure out. In previous games in the series, the overworld puzzles overwhelmed the player with options and the challenge came from figuring out which tool was the right one to use and when. Origami King doesn't have that. I remember encountering this one puzzle late in the game, after chapter 4, where I had 4 very basic elemental skills and there was this giant pad telling me to use them. in front of an open flame and it was very obvious that I had to use the water velemental to remove it. There was very little thought involved with that puzzle. During the whole process of solving that puzzle I thought to myself, "wait, isn't this the same puzzle from Color Splash where I was required to use a fire extinguisher to take out the fire in the FIRST boss?"
      Olly was a very bad villain and I just thought his whole story was huge missed opportunity.
      The reason unoriginal character designs in Paper Mario is a meme is because of how is an actual issue in this game. I remember playing TTYD for my first time and being super interested in seeing new spices and characters. I don't really get that same satisfaction out of this game. Yeah, we get new origami characters and origami bosses which are admittedly really cool, but the NPC character designs are where the game fails. And what were they thinking with the stationary?! Having scissors and tape as a boss is really lame! Why couldn't the stationary be operated by an intimidating boss character, or perhaps they could be possessed by ghosts with different designs. Heck, why not make them Origami ghosts? If the game wants me to take the story, the world, and Bobby's sacrifice seriously, why does it have these office supplies as characters?
      I feel like the lack of giving Bobby an interesting design doesn't really make sense when you put into context that previous Paper Mario games gave typical bomb-oms new designs. It's actually hard to believe that was one of the main draws of Paper Mario initially was the fact that it breathed new life into these typical enemies from the Mario series. The first thing you saw from PM64 was a village of goombas, each with their own name, design, and personality to make them feel alive! TOK struggles to create more than 2 distinct designs for goombas. There's the vanilla basic goomba, the bone goomba, and that Shogun Studios goomba. None have their own name, distinct personality, and 2 were models copied from Color Splash. Yeah, this game's character designs are a serious downgrade from games over 15 years prior and it is not even worth defending.
      I will admit that the partners could sometimes end up being one-note and/or bland in the older games, but the reason people want partners back is so they can expand upon them and give them even more personality. Anyways, personality isn't the entire reason people want to bring back partners, but it's also because they added more depth to the combat, they were great tools for the over world, and they had extremely memorable designs! The partners in OK all lack unique designs, use in the overworld, and any tactical depth in the combat. See, that's where my problems with these "partners" lay. Professor Toad is the ONLY partner that does anything on the overworld and it's not used extremely cleverly, if there's a glowing spot, just use him. He is easily replaceable by a shovel. As a long time Paper Mario fan, is is just really disappointing to see how little they have progressed from TTYD.

    After reading the comments, I kind of like how even regarding some of the awful opinions to be debatable is a good thing. Every player's experience of the game is different, and that includes how much lore can be oversighted. It wasn't in this video, but the fact that there are cafes for even Bowser's minions is just so goddamn nice for Paper Mario lore it's sickening. While the RPG has folded into an amalgamation of an identity crisis, the writers really had it in the bag!

First is really good, Second is even better, Third is not as good as the last two, but still a fun time, Fourth is a bloody stain on the entire franchise, Fifth is better than the last but still not good, and Sixth is a return to form that is right up there with the original trilogy, but everyone disregards it because 4 and 5 left a bad taste in everyone’s mouths.

    This game, so close to perfection, but perfection is a limit as high as infinitum.
    At the very least it did it's best with the limitations imposed.
    Now, if it didn't have such ludicrous inhibitions it would've been a masterpiece.
    They best take notes on what didn't work so they can have their own style while pleasing everyone.

    • @LairoftheManiacs

      "Perfection", as far as paper Mario, was the original trilogy. They will never be able to be replaced, never replicated, and never forgotten.

    • @supermariogamer5294
      @supermariogamer5294 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Who said anything about replacing, replicating or forgetting the old games?
      If this game managed to make a battle system that was different, yet very engaging and most of all, very rewarding, it would've been a perfect game in it's own right and it's own way.
      Plus, let's not kid ourselves, when the old trilogy failed, it REEKED with the scent of poison mushrooms and mistakes.

    • @LairoftheManiacs
      @LairoftheManiacs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@supermariogamer5294 Right, but battling in an RPG is half of the gameplay. There has to be some sort of reward; a way to make the player stronger for stronger enemies. That's what the first three SPM games did. But then Sticker Star stripped it away, replacing the reward of EXP for useless coins.
      I'll give Origami King some credit: at least they made the useless coins more useful. But there's still no sense of fulfillment in the battle systems.
      Then again, I don't really have any right to judge, as I've never played the game, nor do I plan to in the future. So I could be totally wrong about all of this. But this is just my opinion.

    • @supermariogamer5294
      @supermariogamer5294 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LairoftheManiacs it *could* have worked if more thought was put into the reward aspects, *even* with no EXP.
      Coins: Limit them to be plentiful in battles and scarce in the overworld (aside from the minigames), use them to buy better gear, more attacks or fixing your old gear and attacks.
      Confetti and battles: enemies can drop "summons", use these to summon different enemies in paper form to do various things Mario can't, they are unlimited uses but cost confetti to be used.
      Ring battles: remove the helps and restrict the timer to bosses, make the enemies far more resilient and not allow them to surrender, set moves, 4 actions max, no bonuses.
      Unlockables: boss summons for the Legion (2 action slots taken each time, very powerful), unlockable action slots each 2 Vellumental bosses.

    Hey great video.
    I gotta say though, Normally I'm totally a fan of the older games like 64 and was disappointed with Sticker Star, but when I see fans of the old series placing so much emphasis on "experience points", I just don't know anymore. The old games had so much other stuff going for them and people's main focus is on EXP systems of all things? I do dare question if "role-playing game" absolutely necessitates having an EXP-based levelling system. As an incentive to battle? I dunno, if you have to add an incentive for battles I'd say it's time to question whether unscripted battles really need to be there in there first place. If anything, the diminishing Star Points in 64 incentivize you to avoid battles until you're in a later area with greater rewards and to not battle at all if you're visiting earlier areas. As for upgrading stats, that can he handled through exploration like they did with the hearts. It is more fun to explore a fun world and look for secrets than to grind to increase some arbitrary number. 64's system keeps you at a decent level for whatever area you're in and never really gets in your way, but that still doesn't explain why it needs to be there in the first place.

      "if you have to add an incentive for battles I'd say it's time to question whether unscripted battles really need to be there in there first place."

    • @lukebytes5366
      @lukebytes5366 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you can feel more powerful the further you go. That's the incentive for all RPGs gameplay wise. That's like saying what's the point of sp points increasing to compensate for cost heavy moves when they could be the same price as any other. It's part of the progression for rpgs. I don't see the issue if it gives players a reason to fight anyhow, which modern paper mario is still struggling with.

I don’t hate Origami King, nor do I fault anyone who likes it, but I just can’t see myself playing it. I can see what it’s trying to do and I greatly appreciate it, but it just saddens me from what I’ve seen and the various articles I’ve read that Nintendo seems to refuse to return to how things were a long time ago. Origami King has things that harken back to the original Trilogy, but I honestly feel it’s still stuck in the shadow of Sticker and Color. I’m sorry. I respect Origami King and what it’s done, but it’s not a game that I think I would enjoy from start to end.
