Turns out the outer power line running INTO the house was hit directly by lightning. The cables were melted into the brick siding, and half the fuse box was melted... half the fuse box...
The other half was fine. The main breaker was tripped. It saved my stepdad's life. He didn't get so much as a shock.

I mean in the most non-offensive meaning possible, I think he pretty clearly exhibits many traits of autism or at the very least, some significant neuro-divergance. That isn't a negative thing, but it does raise some questions when it comes to enabling this kind of thing.
Like they're dealing with a few grand worth of batteries + whatever they value their lives, and they use a $15 amazon table as a safety device. The vapors alone are enough to make this stupid, before even getting into electrical shock risks, the risk of battery explosion or leakage, the risks of getting hit with flying debris, or the environmental impacts of both their little experiment as well as disposal.

Actually, a car battery setup similar to what you show here is sometimes used in lightning labs. I'm an electromagnetic effect engineer retired from a large aerospace company located in the Seattle area. I don't know if they still do it this way, but when I was there, we used the car batteries to simulate the "C" component of the lightning strike. The C component tests for long duration dwell time attachments. For this component, the current isn't the critical issue, it's the charge transfer (Coulombs) that is important. We would use the batteries to put 200 to 800 Amps through a test item for however long it takes to transfer 20 Coulombs. This component is used to test items that might get welded by the lightning strike. For example, hinges or actuators.
I used to keep a blob of aluminum in my desk drawer for show and tell. The switch used for the C component got stuck shut during one of my tests and before the technician could pull the panic (backup) switch, a 2 inch "V" shaped notch was cut into a quarter inch thick "L" extrusion. The blob was what dripped down onto the test stand...
Just be careful, son. People have died in lightning labs.
