Yeah that was a real pain in the butt. I use the wire wheel, but that thing had a lot of years of crud on it. Hope you’ve been doing well. Thanks for stopping in.
Im still looking for the camera over here. I swear you know what I'm working on, or about to work on my 72 beetle. Great info video. Keep up the good work. Your SUPER BEETLE is looking great. I'm glad you shared it with everyone.
Thanks brother, it’s actually an easy job. So I wanted to share it with others instead of them having to pay someone. If their transmission is leaking.
Definitely was. Wasn't the reason I came here, but I saw what I needed to see, just to answer some of the questions I had. I'm new to IRS - doing a conversion from swing axle. Anyway! Thanks agian.
Hi , Love your vids. Did you only find one snap ring probably used as a spacer. I pulled the hubs off and found a snap ring on the floor not knowing what side the ring came off. I have both retainer rings this ring was extra not used for a retainer. Thanks so much . John
Another great video Slades. I like to use silicone on my rubber components like seals and o rings and such. But I have learned from watching your videos that you can use dielectric grease on them. It’s really a matter of preference and I have no problem with someone using what they like a know. For the snap ring pliers you need you a good set. I recommend Knipex. Some of the other beetle people on here like them and I do too I use them when dealing with snap rings and have no issues now.
You’re right, everyone uses something different. The reason I use the dielectric grease is because it does not corrode rubber. After this video I ended up buying a new set from Lowe’s. And I really like these things. I saw them on one of my other videos I just can’t remember which one.
@@SladesVWBeetle that’s great. I hope too see them in the videos. I was at Lowe’s today to get that 25mm socket you were talking about for the brake switch in your video and man the prices are outrageous I found one on eBay cheaper so I’ll probably just buy it. I need a good set of snap ring pliers too I’ll probably get the Knipex. Lowe’s didn’t have any near me.
Great video Slade. Do you have any tips for pulling the flange out? One side came off easily but the other side is not playing nice. C clips are out on both. Thanks in advance.
Question ;; The piece that bolts to the CV ( dont know what its called ) is loose on the shaft and making a lot of noise when its driven, any suggestions ???
I ended up talking with a friend of mine on the phone. And he said he had to pull his back out to replace them. I was staring at mine on the garage, and I thought I might as well do it. I know what would happen if I didn’t.
@@SladesVWBeetle yeah....that will be in my upcoming video....anything that can go wrong...will go wrong. I’m kicking myself right now....because I had the perfect opportunity to replace them.
That will make for a good video!! Oh trust me, I have done that before on things. I move forward, and then I take two steps back because I forgot something. It’s probably me getting older. 😁
On my son's Ghia project, he had all new brakes installed at a shop and at that time they replaced the transmission seals. After a couple months he had the car at a different shop and they found both seals leaking again. Any thoughts?
Question: is there a way to test the transaxle while it's out (for instance, drive the output shaft with a drill and run it through each gear to make sure everything is okay without a complete teardown)? I have a couple transaxles that were supposed to be good, but would like to do a good service, replace axle seals, etc and check out to confirm. Thanks! (9-4-2024)
I got mine from Jbugs. I believe this is the one. www.jbugs.com/product/113301189F.html?gclid=CjwKCAiA25v_BRBNEiwAZb4-ZXOjEbep_UpKzCDjVV3QtV-Lbtqphxm263i85XXY8XjLikYDuaisCRoCFhsQAvD_BwE
I am doing a bench-test on ‘71 engine that’s a 12volt system. Now i got a tranny-case with 6 volts bellhousing. Question: Can i use a 12volts starter on a 6 volts bellhousing without changing starter bushing? Will that be a problem? 🤕🤒
usually it is the other way around, people leave the 6 volt starter there, and hit it 12v ...it's not 12 V continuiously, and it spins over really well...if you use an Automatic Transmission starter, I was told they are self supporting and the bushing is not that important due to the design...good luck
No unfortunately I don’t have those yet. What a great idea for my next one, the 68 I will be pulling in. I only have a video on the shifting rod bushing inside the tunnel.
Thanks! decided not to ignore my leak, this job doesn't look too bad!
Honestly it’s not! Please remember that inside snap ring is a spacer!! Thanks for watching!
Hey good instructional video. This is the first I seen of this. Thank you
Thanks very much, and thank you so much for checking in.
Hours of fun cleaning that box down I bet....👍🇬🇧

Like learning new things! Thanks for sharing!
marcijunebug thanks so much Marci. It was something easy that needed repaired.
There’s a snap ring in mine as well. Which is why I am here lol. It must belong if you and I both have it....
Yes sir! The one in the inside...is a spacer! I found out. 😁 Thanks for being here!
It's called out in the Haynes Manual page 87; item 11; “Spacer”

Yes I was looking for the same and I'm going to try to do it with the transaxle still in my bug so wish me luck!
I think the "spacer: is a retaining ring from the axle which likely needs to be repacked and rebuilt.
Hi, can you post link for new differential seal? Having devil of a time finding them.
Thanks
Wow! Great game! You unlocked the extra snap ring level! :-)
Toddmichael Janiszewski 😂😂😂😂
Thanks for the video.
And thank you Douglas, I hope it is useful.
I would use a socket to drive in the seal so it distributes the impact evenly not to dent or bend the seal.
I agree Adam, thank you for chiming in I appreciate that.
Thanks for this video. I'm getting ready to swap transaxles and I want to replace those seals.
nice job.
Super helpful Thanks
Thanks Robert! And thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
Great video. Keep them coming.
OFF AXIS BUILDS Thanks brother, and you do the same also. Great videos.

What if it is the gasket under the eight nuts around the outside of the final drive you see clearly in this TH-cam?
I’m going to have to do this on the 69... I just found out mine are leaking...I wish I would have known when I had the trans out.

What's the name of the seals I need to change mine
Those are IRS final drive seals
@@SladesVWBeetle thank you I already order them, thank you
Amazon just put in Final Drive Seals and they come up under jbugs Final Drive Seals. You are welcome my friend!
Where do I get these parts? I have this leak, but no idea where to get these IRS parts from (I'm in Cape Town South Africa)
Was there a loose snap ring on the other side?
Jerry Robison Yes actually there was. It’s almost like it was used as a spacer. I’m guessing anyhow

Bad cvs can cause wobble and cause the leak.Or loose worn bearing.
That’s a lot of irk, I’m tired, 😂!stay safe!
