Wow Mike, good video, there is quite a deference in the transaxle's, it's got to be nice to have a 5 speed, you have really got the two Baja's blown apart, thanks for the update, catch you soon buddy
Very interesting. I was disappointed when you finished your sentence with "not 10.5 inches" - unable to find type 2 and type 1 r&p sizes anywhere, very frustrating.
Dude, you needed some creepy 70s elevator music the first 30 seconds of this video. And maybe a " keep on truckin" T shirt. Good comparison. The woods guys tear up those three ribs often.
Is there a specific reason why you didn’t continue with the eco engine and opted for a Honda? I see you’re in Colorado I am also in Colorado and just started a project that I purchased that already has an eco installed. I’d like to get in contact with you and possibly run some ideas through you for suspension
The Baja I have the Ecotec in is a "regular" baja and the Ecotec works really well in it. My new Baja Wratchet is quite a bit heavier than most Bajas, so I wanted a little more grunt for it. So I went with the V6. Email me at dougbugbuilder@gmail.com and we can talk.
I want another baja bettle, not really for heavy offload trails or baja itself. As I have had spinal surgery, I can not use a clutch due to nerve damage, so I was thinking about using an Automatic transmission. Would it fit into a 67 to 69 bettle?
There are not a lot of automatic transaxle options out there for rear engine buggies. But if you have one you could definitely get it to fit one way or another.
Nice comparison between the two trans. What are the gear ratios on the Weddle, since it's a 5 spd. Big difference on price. Like they say, anything about performance is $.
It has 5.14 R&P 1st is 3.11 2nd is 2.17 3rd is 1.60 4th is 1.20 5th is .82 I asked for a bit of a jump going into 5th. Typically final gear would be around 1:1. But I asked for it to be a bit of overdrive. I'm really happy with that. I may have gone a little to aggressive on the R&P. 1st gear is pretty low, I don't really ever use it. I can even start from second without to much issue. On the track I'm in second or third. Next R&P option was 4.86
@@DougBugBuilder You might consider keeping that R&P ratio until you are sure what application you are going to do with Wratchet. My budget VW off road buggy has a stock R&P ratio of 4: 37, I believe, and sometimes when the trail are like boulders, wish I have a lower gears. The reason for that is, I can't raise the RPM to get the HP and Torque that I need. If the RPM is high then the buggy is too fast. Believe it or not, I've taken this old buggy some really steep hills and the only thing that stop it from going up is traction. Nothing special on the buggy. Just an air cooled ,1700, dual port with progressive EMPI 2 barrel carb. 31's Dick Cepek EXTREME COUNTRY Tires. When I bought it, it was a sandrail. I convert it to off road buggy.
Do you have any opinions on the subaru transmission swaps? I got a subaru trans swap kit essentially for free thrown in with other parts including the WRX trans. Currently I have a Type 2. Engine is a turbo EJ25.
I've done a bit of research when I was building mine. Type 2 003 is good up to about 100 hp. Type 4 091 up to about 150 hp. Vanagon 094 to 175 hp. Subaru from 225 to 250 hp. This is in stock form. If you build any of these, they can take up to about 25% more. Weddle if going larger. I have a hybrid 003/091 and has handled 150 hp well (but i drive with a light foot).
That was a kit, I bought it years back, I think I got it at Chirco. It's basically the slave cylinder, a little eyelet to hold it, and some threaded rod.
They're both mutts, but we think the big guy is Husky/Shepard. And the smaller guy Lab/Shepard/Husky. Those are the best guesses we have with how they look and behave.
Appreciate the CONTENT and your STYLE in this OUTSTANDING video! Can't tell you how much this has helped... Respectfully, Seth
That's great, thanks for the feedback.
Curiosity struck and decided to look up the Weddle HV25.....saw the price.....I am now typing this from the floor.
It aint cheap!
AIN'T IT JUST AIN'T IT 😜 lols
can you help me up from the floor?
Seriously. I don't much see the point in trying to compare these.
Wow Mike, good video, there is quite a deference in the transaxle's, it's got to be nice to have a 5 speed, you have really got the two Baja's blown apart, thanks for the update, catch you soon buddy
Hey Mike, they're both torn apart here and it's a mess! I need to start putting things back together.
Always cool seeing your videos have you seen the prices go up a lot on them I’m glad I bought my 2d 3 years ago right now it’s at 11k
I did see that, the HV25 is $16,500 now.
I don't even own a volkswagen or buggy of any kind, but that was a really good concise comparison video
Thanks!
Great info man!! Cool to see the difference.
Thanks!
Should be able to use the same flywheel just different pilot bushing unless im missing something like starter alignment.
Subaru M5 transmission is a good choice and capability for 4x4
Cool to see the difference!
Even I didn't realize the size difference until they were side by side.
That's like comparing apples and oranges... Although the oranges are made of solid gold.
That's about the truth there! 😁
Very interesting. I was disappointed when you finished your sentence with "not 10.5 inches" - unable to find type 2 and type 1 r&p sizes anywhere, very frustrating.
All I can tell you is the Type 2 R&P measures about 7 1/2" wide. So you can use that as comparison.
man i would love a Weddle trans but holy crap 20 is up there
This transaxle was not cheap!
Basically the entire Baja is designed around this transaxle.
Great video! The weddle trans seems amazing. Did you look into any Porsche boxster transaxles like the G86.01/20 or the G87.01/20?
No, I went straight to the Weddle.
I just wanted something really strong.
I know the Porsche are strong, but this things a tank.
@@DougBugBuilder fair enough! thanks for the reply. I love both your bajas (if you can call wratchet a baja )
How do I use a VW transaxle for a mid engine set up?
Is the cv to cv width the same?
Believe it or not the HV25 is about 1" skinnier than the type 2 at the flanges.
Dude, you needed some creepy 70s elevator music the first 30 seconds of this video. And maybe a " keep on truckin" T shirt.

Lol, if I look hard enough I probably have a shirt like that.

Does the weddle company came out with a speed kit for a regular vw tranny?
Not that I am aware of.
evolution requires change👏👏👏👏👏💯💯💯💯💪💪

Hi, do you have a video on how to flip the Subaru differential to install it upside down on a buggy?
Sorry, I don't.

awesome vid save some time mockin up
What is the ideal transmission for a 2335cc VW motor daily driver. Thanks
I'd say the VW Bus transaxle, like the one in this video. (the smaller one)
Ok. If it's longer how do I install it into my stock 63 bug. Don't get me wrong it's kool Trans. How much HP can it handle.
It's supposed to be able to handle about 550hp.
As far as fitting in a stock chassis, it would take quite a bit of modification to get it in there.
Are the internal on vw box changed to have the motor in front of the box?
No, this is a stock VW box
Thanks 👍👍
Welcome 👍

The Subaru trans swap is great. I think that'll be better than the type 2.

G'day,
your Volkswagen transmission did you find a hydraulic kit for it or was it something you've done yourself.
That was a kit, I bought it years back, I think I got it at Chirco. It's basically the slave cylinder, a little eyelet to hold it, and some threaded rod.
"Shift Shaft" That's easy for you to say....LOL. So did you buy the sequential Weddle?
I did not, this is regular H pattern. In hindsight I wish I did. For this application sequential would have been better.
Live and learn I guess. 🤷♂️
😊😊😊😊😊😊
Hello! Wich trans you recommend for a v8 or 6 cylinder project
The HV25 for sure.
@@DougBugBuilder ty, have a nice day
And the measuring tape only has inches imagine that.
What hp can it handle?
550hp according to Weddle.
what breed are your dogs?

Hello, what is the shift pattern? Thank you,
