you can get lost in this song. Her voice is magical. Soothing as any i have ever heard. Rest in peace Eva..........
She has one of the most beautiful female voices ever. She did an amazing rendition of Fleetwood Mac's "Songbird" that is fantastic.
Eva strikes a note on Songbird that I swear could break glass. It's about 2:27 in. Beyond amazing.
Nice reaction! This recording was done in January 1996. In June of that year Eva was diagnosed with metastasized melanoma and she died in November. She was really only known in the Washington DC area when she passed. Her first solo album, Songbird, was released after her death. It wasn't until two years later, when a couple of DJs in England played her recordings of Over the Rainbow and Fields of Gold on the radio and TV, that she really began to be noticed. Since then, her albums have sold over 10 million copies. I first learned of her in 2000, when NPR included her version of Over the Rainbow in a list of the top 100 recordings of the 20th century. I have loved her ever since. It was only last year that I learned that a friend of hers had recorded this performance at Blues Alley on the night they were recording her live album. As far as I know, the 13 songs on that video are the only full videos we have of her performing live. I am so grateful to get to see her perform.
By the way, Eva's voice could go from razor thin whisper to sky-piercing belt in a second. For some great examples of that, check out Blues in the Night, or Oh, Had I a Golden Thread.
Thanks for reacting to this! This recording brings me to tears every single time I hear it.
Oh yes! Blues in the night! My Momma Done Told Me !
That was such a beautiful rendition of this song. So sad that she is no longer with us. She died at only 33 years of age. I also love the version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. Sadly he also died young at 38 years of age. At least we have their music left as a legacy.
Her guitar work was as lovely as her voice.
The first time I heard Eva Cassidy was when I was on vacation. I walked into a souvenir shop and her music was playing. I immediately had to know who was singing. (Only 1 other artist has affected me like that-Nina Simone her songs were in the soundtrack ).
Eva passed away a few months after this performance.
Eva sings blues, folk, jazz
I LOVED your reaction!
Thank you for appreciating her. I can tell you are sincerely enjoying her talent in this video. She is one of my all-time, very favorite performers--left us TOO SOON! :((((
Eva slays me
Singers are now doing cover's of Eva's cover 27 years later !!! Eva owns this song. She takes us on a journey as a participant, not just a listener.
Her interpretation of this song is truly beautiful and I hadn’t heard it before. I am sorry to discover her after her passing. RIP Eva.
So beautiful,I’m crying !
Eva Cassidy was so incredible what a voice and talent. It was such a tragedy and loss to the world when she died of cancer at only 33 years old in 1996, but her music will forever live on. Some other recommendations are Danny Boy, Time After Time, Fields Of Gold, Autumn Leaves, What A Wonderful World, Songbird.
What A Wonderful World was the last song she performed in public, just 6 weeks before she passed away, at a celebration of her life. Also, Eva didn't want to release any of the songs from the Blues Alley gig as she had a cold at the time and felt her vocals were not what they should be.
Autumn Leaves. What she does with it us just musical perfection.
Listen to Songbird by Eva also Danny Boy and Fields of Gold. All great songs. She is a beautiful singer and guitar player. There's a lot more too but these are my favorites.
So simple, and so pure.
Thanks for getting to Eva...she's even better than you can imagine. If you want vocal fireworks, listen to "How Can I Keep From Singing?" (live) or "Golden Thread" (studio). In the first one especially, she hits notes you can't believe...and man, they ain't falsetto, either. A truly precious talent, and gone at 33 from skin cancer.
Her voice control was crazy amazing and her guitar playing was right up there as well! Incredible talent!! So sad that she's no longer with us; so sad.

She dies too young at 33,
From skin cancer.
May I suggest another great song by
Eva Cassady
Song is
🎶Oh I a golden thread 🎵🎶🎵
You gonna adore this song too
Keep the good work my friend ✌️ 👏 👌👍🏻
Great reaction man, this song is very emotional especially when it was released after she passed so young. Her Fields of Gold is another masterpiece.
RIP Eva. Legend.
Just beautiful. This song, from the film, The Wizard of Oz, is what sent Judy Garlands already great career stratospheric . Her own live version, is different, but beyond stunning.
The Wizard of Oz opened in 1939.
I wish someone would react to her doing Amazing Grace, unf*cking believable!
I love Eva. She owned this song.
Nice reaction, and you are easy on the eyes.
This was recorded early in 1996 and she passed away later the same year. 😢
Sweet reaction to an incredible rendition of this classic. You handle bopping between music genres with grace and generosity.
Two more categories for you to consider - Folk and Indie. 💜
You gotta show me wheere to start lol
"Marinating in the song" - That was a great way of putting it. Every one of Eva's songs captures you. Every one. Other Eva songs are Autumn Leaves, Time After Time, Danny Boy, Fields of Gold, etc. Great reaction.
I recently just found out about Eva Cassidy as well, so beautiful. I love the way you said her voice just marinates the song, so fitting!
"Her voice could play the Devil out of you " (or something to that effect ) cracked me up ( funny coz it's true!)
Great reaction as per usual!
Thank you for your thoughtful observations and comments
Yes! She was considered a blues jazz singer. She has been my favorite since I discovered her. Her version of the song gives me hope about the beautiful after life my mom has got to experience this past year she passed. So happy for my mom but how much we miss her
1996,died from cancer only 10 months later.
Love your analogy about the song marinating you. Try Autumn Leaves from the same concert. If you dare!
Eva put the soul into this song!
🙏❤️
I love her Fields of Gold
❤️
This was a signature song for the legendary Judy Garland.
Try her cover of Sting's " Fields of gold". A real treat.
There’s a lullaby quality to her version of this song that’s tranquil and allows one to relax and focus and enjoy the beauty of her vocals and her guitar skills, I never particularly liked this song until I heard her singing it, just superb.
Nice reaction. The way Eva sings this song is unique only to her. It is neither country nor R&B, but straight up blues. It was even recorded at a club called Blue's Alley in Washington DC.
Here’s a link to her singing blues in ’People get ready’

Listen to blues in the night for her other side.
I agree a bluesy sound
I love her version of Fields of Gold.
Her version of Autumn Leaves is my favorite of hers.
React to her cover of Autumn Leaves, Blues In the Night, Songbird, Fields of Gold and many more. Except for close friends, unfortunately this Angel of a Performer, didn't get noticed until about 2 years after she passed away at the age of 33 of complications to melanoma cancer. That live performance was recorded in a D.C. Night Club just months before her death in 1996. If it wasn't for a bunch of reaction videos like this on TH-cam, nobody would have ever heard of her. That would have been an even bigger tragedy.
Eva Cassidy died, unfortunately, when she lost her battle with cancer.
It's called singing.
You're probably comparing someone who came AFTER. So who sounds like whom.
She was amazing. So sad that she died soon after this was recorded and it's one of the only videos of her performing. Her work with Chuck Brown is great too. Sadly, her fame came after she died
