No autotune, no lip synching. The only special effect was her immense talent. She was also an excellent drummer and often played on their studio recordings. Truly an immense talent gone too soon. What a voice…

  • @daleb1279

What everyone who is now so used to engineered auto tuned vocals needs to remember, this is a recording of a live performance with 50+ year old recording mics and technology and she still sounds like that. She generally only needed one take to record a song too. It was a truly natural singing talent that very few ever possess. One of my favorites has always been For All We Know, and as her brother Richard said, the money is in the basement, meaning her lower register and that song is very much her lower register and just beautiful.

Karen Carpenter was perhaps a once in a generation musical talent. I've always loved her voice and the Carpenter's music in general. Her brother Richard was a piano prodigy and his arrangements complimented Karen's voice perfectly. Karen was also an extremely talented drummer and she often referred to herself as "merely" a drummer who sang. I am so glad that young TH-camrs are finding and cherishing this phenomenal woman's talent so many years after we tragically lost her so soon and far before her time. I saw a video in which a guy used software to scientifically measure her vocals 'live' versus 'in studio' and he found that she was not only on pitch and pitch perfect every time but often, her live performances were actually better than the studio version of the same song. How many artists can make that claim today?

Recorded in one take, reading the lyrics off a napkin and 21 years old! OTHERWORLDLY! "Superstar" reached #2 on the charts in 1971.... It has been recorded by a number of people over the years, with Luther Vandross the most recently and successful version besides the Carpenters. However, the writers of the song and Vandross himself, said the perfect best version was the Carpenters.

Karen is the greatest IMHO. Just draws you in, grabs you, makes you cry and sings past your heart to your soul. They claimed 17 consecutive top 40 hits and three Grammy Award wins between 1970 and 1976, and a total of 27 Hot 100 hits, the second-most of any duo in Billboard chart history. Superstar is one of many top hits. Overall had 15 #1's on the adult contemporary charts in 14 years if you think about it is unbelievable. If you get a couple your doing great. They were a force to recon with.

Something that became common after they started it.

I love to see people react to the music of only a few decades ago. I also feel sort of sad in a way, that kids growing up didn't have the chance to engage and learn from with such a diverse range of styles and genre's from all era's, that those born after the early 2000's missed out on. Not only that, I have seen a lot more 'reaction' video's being recommended now than I have in the past. It's always nice to watch people smile when they hear a classic song for the first time!

This was a massive hit for them. Other hits are we’ve only just begun, close to you, top of the world, goodbye to love, yesterday once more, rainy days and mondays, only yesterday and please mr postman. I usually also recommend checking out the song Now as well it was her final recording.
She has some disco music as well from she tried to go solo (she worked with a lot of the same writers who did off the wall for Michael Jackson and actually turned down rock with you) one of the better songs is called my body keeps changing my mind.
Great reaction! This is the live version that is missing a lot of the background vocals.
Please check out her drumming as well Karen felt she was actually a better drummer than a singer and clearly was happiest drumming, Unfortunately she was eventually forced to stop drumming (she drummed and sang at the same time and the management felt the audience couldn’t see her well enough). It’s been argued in some documentaries that not being behind the drum kit caused her to be more focused on her weight. If you want to learn more about them there are several fantastic documentaries (only yesterday, the vh1 behind the music) on TH-cam and a great tv movie also on TH-cam.

Another great reaction! Thanks for giving Janis the attention she deserves. You are right about Janis being an even greater legend if she lived. I lost two of my favorite artists when they were both passed away at the age of 27, Janis and Jimi Hendrix. Highly recommend you check out her cover of "Summertime", either the studio version or the 1969 live Amsterdam version. Also "Maybe", live or studio version. Plus "Work Me Lord" live in Amsterdam, in 1969. She will take you to church on that song. Lastly, "Try" (Just a Little Bit Harder), a great funk song.

If you really want to hear what that voice can do, then there are just TWO songs you MUST listen to, Solitaire, and Ticket to ride. On a side note, Richard (her brother and the arranger for all her songs) told her not to worry about her voice, (that she didn't like!!!!), he said "The basement is where the money is", Boy was he RIGHT!!

Her voice is classified as contralto, rare in popular music. One interesting fact. She died as a result of anorexia so became one of the earliest well known person to do so. In fact, the condition had not had much exposure until her death.

If you want to hear a lot of "baby/babe" you should listen to Led Zeppelin's soulful/bluesy "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You." You definitely won't be sorry.

Karen's recording was 1971. Luther's was 1983. Bramlett and Leon Russell wrote it in 1969.

Karen Carpenter is one of the greatest female vocalist of all time. She was a fantastic drummer as well. Richard Carpenter was great pianist and he arranged all their songs. They both complemented each other perfectly. I saw them in concert in 1973 in Louisiana which is about 50 years ago this year. The song Superstar originally called Groupie Song and was recorded by Delaney and Bonnie in 1969. Writing credits for the song are Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell.

There will never be another Karen! This is one of their hit singles and i have enjoyed them countless times since i grew up with them. Its been recorded by many others, but like most of their nsongs they made it theirb own. I really enjoy reactions when people first hear the Capenters. Especially young folks of today. Usually, people are then fans for life. I first heard them sing Rainy Days and Mondays when it first played on radio and i about 11. Even though i was only a kid, the voice really filled my heart with real love. There are a lot of groups that came out with great music back then. However, it was like she was singing directly to me. Soon the world also discovered them.

Hi Mugnify. Again, nice reaction. (Commented on your reaction to A Song For You as well. Thought I'd frovide same here since this is more recent. : ) I believe her 1971 video of ths song, in her dk red dress, is even better. Did you know every female harmony in all of her songs was hers as well, sang, then dubbed into the song by Richard ? Im on my late 60s (a bass), so remember Carpenters very well on the radio and TV specials. She began, with her brother Richard, by playing drums. Richard, her brother, was a terrific arranger but KC's 3+ octave voice was discovered by Herb Alpert, A&M Records, in 1969, which began their road to fame. Richard convinced her that her best singing voice was contralto, 'the money is in the basement'. I believe KC's, voice, especially contralto, was the best female voice ever. No auto-tune, stripping, gimmicks, or screaming. Her nickname was 'one take', since she always sang a song once in studio without a single re-take. She sang to you with mesmerizing emotion, perfect pitch and enunciation. Her voice compelled you to listen. She had no professional voice training. Paul McCartney said she sang Ticket To Ride better than the Beatles, and "she had the most angelic voice I have ever heard". John Lennon told her at an LA restaurant "you have a fabulous voice luv". They were most successful in early/mid1970s when she/they received 4 grammys. She was also recognized by 1975 Playboy poll as rock drummer of the year. Check other songs such as 'Solitaire', 'Only Yesterday', 'Hideaway', 'Rainy Days and Mondays',' 'This Masquerade', 'I Can Dream Cant I'(a big band era song), 'Hurting Each Other', 'Need To Be In Love', 'Goodbye To Love', etc.. She had a few friends including Petula Clark, Olivia Newton John and Dionne Warwick. She had anorexia with a serious onset in 1975 that continued the rest of her life. Married a guy in 1982 that was broke, didn't tell her he had a vasectomy, and mistreated her. Never knew true love. She died Feb 1983 at 32yo due to complications from anorexia. [Some info contained herein came from documentaries such as, "Only Yesterday"].
