  • In this video, Daniel Reach shows us how to create a beautiful leather journal cover out of oil tanned leather-and how to add our own logo or design to it with a stencil! Combine this cover with what we learned in our book binding tutorial, and you have a handmade leather journal made completely from scratch.

Heck yeah, I'm glad we are still doing book binding. I hope you can do a video on how to rebind a modern book so that it looks all medieval!

That would be epic! I'll see about adding that to the list.

I like the way these videos are filmed. 1: During explanations, facial expression and hand movements help me understand the content better. 2:when the TV is gets paused n unpaused as im working on the project its more like im an being taught in person because your face is there. 3:its nice to see who is teaching you something and not just heavy breathing and the sound of tiny hammers....

I got a text block from one of my friends that he made and I need to put a cover on it; however, he sewed rope onto the spine to make ridges in the cover. Can you make a video about putting a cover on that type of book binding? Great video by the way I loved it!

That would be a challenging video, but I'm up for it. Let me see what I can do!

Music sounds very familiar. I follow Nedforge who does books. Your picture is nice.

NerdForge is amazing! I love her projects. As for the music, most of us use one of the two or three music sites that are available, which means, its pretty easy to come across the same song on multiple channels. I'd be willing to bet that some of our music over laps.

Nice I did one some time ago but did it a little different. I used carbon paper to trace the image onto the leather, then used a wood burning kit to burn the image into the oil tan leather. It produced a nice dark set of lines that are slightly indented into the leather.

OLD Leather Smith here, Excellent job Daniel. I've done similar except I redue.
I even had a client bring me the pattern and the leather the only change i made is Silver Leaf the pattern. Which looked greay on the black Bison he brought 2 me.

While I haven't done it on oil tan, you can mix some of this type of work with a laser to get the majority of the pattern on chrome tan, so it should, probably, work with some testing.

Sure does, use mine all the time for this and for laying out the pattern on the leather.

Careful about using them on chrome/oil tan leather. I've never used one, so I could easily be wrong, but my understanding is that they release toxins when you use a laser on them.

The dye? I've never had that happen. The clip on the video where I was scrubbing at it... I was REALLY scrubbing. I wanted to be able to show how little risk there is of it rubbing off. 😊

My experience with oil tanned leather has been that the oil does not rub off but, with some of them, it will transfer from the leather into other materials over time. I stored a roll of oil tan on the shelf with a roll of veg tan and ended up with some oil spots on the veg tan where they touched. Oil tanned leathers vary in the amount of oil that they contain, though. With this project, if you used a heavily oiled leather, I would bet that some would seep into the pages of your book and discolor them a bit. If you are going for something that is antiqued looking like this, it might not matter though.

@@possumwithaswitchblade so it wouldn’t do well as a wallet. It could rub off on your pants. Good to know!

So youve been a qualified "Artist" since your teens. Okay! The projects are great, but does Weaver have any other Leather Craftsmen that do this sort of thing. Tired of all the face time this guy loves to give himself.
