Why I Really Moved To The Dominican Republic

- I Lived in Tortola a little island in the carrebean, I lived in Puerto rico a bigger island buyt completely different culture, and then finally I lived in New York the melting pop of culture. But for those that don’t know I am 100% dimincan born and raise until I was about 5 years old lol.
And finnally today after nearly 21 years I return back to domincan republic, and I’ll tell you exactly why did it. I’ll break down what this mean Financially, Lifestyle wise and lastly Safety wise.

Obviously First, since this is a financially Channel lets break down what this means financially for me to live in Dominican Republic.
Finance is tricky but simple, because is quatifiable
You have three parts to finances
But you should know that not every decision in life can be made with numbers
For example Warren Buffet lives Omaha but if he moved to another state or country he could save millions on taxes but still that price is to high because his from Omaha and that’s where he loves living
First: Expenses
Shelter: $167 per month for a two bedroom apartment but I could be paying $2000 a month if I wanted to live in the capital ( but this is my Hometown, and for the moment its what makes the most sense )
Utilities: Light, water, Gas, phone and internet: $100
Groceries: $200 (food can be cheaper but convenience is expensive)
Transportation: $300 a month on a SUV my moms car or $200 in car ( but I don’t have a car )
Total: $767
But if I’m being honest I have a had many expenses and I do go a lot so I would increase that to roughly 1000-1500 per month
Second: Income
The benefit of working online is that income stays the same no matter where live
So that’s good
Opportunity Cost (basically comparison )
Living in Puerto Rico cost me $1000 dollars and saved me roughly 23% on taxes
So that’s massive
If I made $1000 I would $40 in the Puerto Rico but here I pay $270, it’s a big difference
Summary: the numbers say this is a bad idea, but I like I told you guys before, not every decision can be made thinking of the numbers, or I would be living in Dubai or something strange like that.
But for the average remote working American, trying to find somewhere to save money, you can definitely do it here
Lifestyle
I’m a pretty boring guy, and I like a simple life
So my life here is a lot better than anywhere else honestly
Here are the factors that helped me decide to live here
First: My Family and My People
I was born here and everyone I know is from here
That’s massive, to be able to be around your family and friends
Because relationships matter a lot
And I also love my church here also
Second: Things to do
I do the same things here that I do anywhere else
In the little town I live their isnt much to do
But whenever I do go out, its about a 45 minute drive which isnt that bad
Third: Convenience
This is a island and it is a third world country so theirs is some getting use to
But for the most parts all the needs are covered and the wants can also be covered
Safety
In the US, its big and massive, and it almost feels like you’re in your own little bubble
But in a small town, everyone knows you and your family and everyone talks
The good people know you and also the not so nice people

I’m also Dominican. I was born there & raised here in the US. At 32 years old.. I’m considering to move back home. I wish you nothing to be best! Congrats 🎉
I’m 33 years old raised in nyc to and I got this urge to move back to dr even tho all my family is here mother side and father side so basically all got I’ve there is friends and long distance cousins USA don’t fullfill me anymore
Hi
Community is everything! God said it’s not good for man to be alone. I’m so happy for you.#DR
Thank you
Thanks for telling us part of yourself Tommy. I was born in the farm outskirts outside Santiago Dominican Republic. My family moved to New York in in 1967. I feel as an American as any one else - US Navy, college graduate, etc. I feel a strong desire to chill out in DR for my retirement. Is just too much tension going on in the US, especially with politics.
Felt the same way bro
I’ve been following you for a couple months never knew you were Dominican until a couple recent videos I watched on Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 & it’s crazy because I’ve been considering moving to the Dominican Republic I was born in America but my family’s all from the Dominican Republic & you are right about the locals I really gravitated and was more social & interacting with the locals more than people in America including my family although I’m highly aware that not everyone is your friend but i felt more welcomed in the DR 🇩🇴 than my own city here in America.
I recommend anyone that’s has money to move to the Dominican Republic. I hope you have a great life , very soon I’ll do the same.❤️🇩🇴 I love the Dominican Republic for the same reason why you live there. My mother brought me there young twice a year to be with my family plus my father lived over there and since then I always try to go back and spend vacation there. Overall the Dominican Republic is the place I call home. God bless you always and who ever reads this comment also ❤️
Thank you 🙏 God bless you also
Love brought you home, and I hear the accent a bit more now which is wonderful ❤ Enjoy your hometown Tommy!!! So happy for you ☺🙌🏽🙌🏽👑
Thank you 🙏
Damn, I was born in the U.S. and have a thicker accent than him 😅
Just love ❤.
Excelente contenido gracias por compartir.
This is inspired. I'm happy for you
Great to hear that you’re back home! I have been considering to actually make the same move and go back to the motherland. I’m looking forward to more videos about your experience and the transition of making it happen.
They'll be coming soon; and keep me up to date with your decision
DR, you seem happy man I'm glad for you planning myself moving back to the island love it there period.
🙏🙌
Dominican Republic is a BOOM in economy! & the Quality of life is sooooooooooo much better!
Blessings, You can travel back and fourth from PR To DR. Logistically is close you can drive your car into the ferry
GO DR !
Here to find out 😊
🙌 now you know
Congrats Tommy
😎🙌
Congrats brother. Would love to pick your brain about the process bec I'm considering don't the same soon. Thx for sharing
Feel free to ask bro
someone from Tortola here! actually surprised to find a person from here randomly. i hope you can talk about Tortola in another video.
I'm Dominican but lived in Tortola for at least 7 years I think it was, as a kid.
DR! As an expat myself, there is definitely a trade-off. You really can't eat your cake and still have it. Many things are more expensive in the Caribbean, and many things are cheaper as well, than in the U.S. The church is also way better, more serious, in the Caribbean. I miss the convenience and access to everything in the US (especially Amazon!), but the culture is way better in the Caribbean.
Cars are super expensive here, for sure and convenience is a factor, but worth the trade off. When you think about it, it’s not really necessities you miss out on but instead conveniences
I'm thinking about relocating abroad, and the DR is on the table. The no Amazon thing honestly hurt my soul, lol.
@@Nicki17321 lol!
how did you make it happen? Canadian looking to make the move
DR is the BOMB. Born and raised in NYC but will be retiring soon, moving to Las Terrenas (Samana)
I’m ready to make that move soon as my son graduates high school
I hope watching my videos and your family bring from the DR is one of the reasons you moved. I was born in Guyana 🇬🇾, moved to Brooklyn as a teenager but came to DR to do dental work during the pandemic when FL reopened and DR was showing tourists and other countries including my original was closed. I would say Airbnb your Puerto Rican house 🏠🏡 and enjoy your life which is happiness over money 💰 in DR🇩🇴
DR That is a nice country. I have a little Dominican in me.
Home is where the heart is❤ Caribbean life is the best😊
Big facts
DR!!❤🔥
Hola! Boricua here. Displaced since Irma and Maria in southern USA. I am seriously considering moving to RD. I have been to Tortola and of course PR. Researching how safe it will be for me a single petit woman.
U.S. dollars go further in the D.R.. more money = more options, and that's true anywhere you go.
You already speak the language (probably minus the lingo 😂) stay away from sketchy neighborhoods and you'll be just fine.

Thank you for doing this video. I just started working remotely so I'm looking at other more affordable living options to save more of what I make. I'm happy you decided to go where the best sense of community is for you. What part of Puerto Rico were you in? Don't think I heard it in the video.
Ayeee!! Im Dominican 🙌🏽

DR...greetings from Kenya....you're welcome to visit here in the future...your homeland continent lol
Maybe one day for sure 😎
You can't put a price tag on mental health and peace. Good for you.
Exactly bro
Hi Tommy, Thanks for sharing your experience. Canadian citizen here yet I am interested in moving to the DR but I don't know where to start. any recommendations?
I pkan to retire in DR. I will be visiting Punta Cana next year for a week. Please advise on lodging.
Lol I can’t help with vacation stuff, I no idea
I'm 100 percent Dominican born there but came to NYC in 1983 when I was 10 years old, went back one time in 1987, and didn't go back till 2021 and to tell you the truth I felt like I didn't belong even tho I live amongst Dominicans in the Bronx. I don't know why I felt like I wasn't with my people.
What remote work do you do!? Maybe I can get to work like you and move back to RD?
Tommie - what happened to the cats?
Do you do consultations what is the best way to reach you? Thinking of making the Move to DR, I also work remotely.

Im a first generation American my mom and grandma all moved from Santo domingo out to the USA. Mainly new york but got separated with cost of living my aunt now lives in PA me in FL. And i realized i dont feel like all the other Americans i was raised dominican even tho i’ve never lived in DR. Im looking into getting my DR citizenship and seeing how it goes. Good thing my husband is from PR cause i meann..
Tommy - i know you went to school for Accounting. Are you still doing accounting work?
DR - Looking to move there too!!!
It’s nice

I was born & raised in NYC Washington Heights and my American born wife has thrown the idea to me that we should retire to DR and enjoy our lives there. I am a Dominican American and it is my culture....but I never actually lived there. I do have family there and people I know, just not sure if it would be the right decision for us.
I wouldn’t sell the house and move, but I would try a temporary stay and see how I like it. Maybe stay a year or 2 and see what it’s like
OMG! My Dad was from Tortola. I lived there as a child, how long did you live in the BVI?
Like 7 years I think lol
What is the difference in the numbers? how much are you spending in the US vs DR?
I Pat $170 for a 2 bed 1 bath here, imagine that in that in the US
Im visiting the island in a few days. Any advise?
Enjoy lol
What job do you have that allows you to work remote?
Which part of DR are you from?
U look dominican too. Can u become citizen if my dad is dominican?
Hey
What is the general area you live in?
San Pedro de Macoris, it’s like 1 hour away from the capital
Que lo Que!!!! 🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴

I’m DR born but didn’t go back until I was 29 years old. I vacation there often. I live the culture and ice style there.
I want to know what city did yiu move too. Do you go back to NYC? If you work remotely how much taxes do you have to pay.
Thank you for sharing this I was so curious!
Taxes are capped at 28% here, and I live in San Pedro
what taxes do you pay in DR? people don't get taxed over there.
They do, it’s like 28% max I think
DR 🇩🇴
I’d love to move down there eventually but men like to take advantage of women who travel and pretend to love you for a green card. I hope to find a partner who I can travel with so I’m not alone. I’m 32 and I own a condo in New Hampshire, also Dominican but my English is stronger. I miss my people and the food
You can meet great people, if you take the right precautions; that would rarely happen. Women and men that tend to fall for those, “ love at first sight stuff “ tend to not be thinking correctly
Well done cheaper to live there
That’s a big plus also
$150 goes a long way in the DR 😅
Yea
Depends lol, I’m the capital not so much

Dude get to the damn point sheesh
I always thought you were intelligent and if anything very sensible, but you then mention church 🤦🏻♂️
I am a Christian bro, a proud one.
@@TommyBryson why did God send angels save Lot and his family? Supposedly because they were the most righteous family in Sodom, on their journey to the next town Zoah, Lots daughters get him drunk in order to date rape him (more than once) earlier he had offered his daughters up to be gang raped by an angry mob.
Not sure why any intelligent person would believe in god after reading the Bible, that’s just one story from the Bible, others support slavery, killing children, underage sex with children, so many mass murders ordered by god.
Or the story of a donkey talking to his master, to thwart gods plan to have him assassinated for doing what god had told him it was ok to do. Gods plan beaten by a talking donkey 😂
How anyone could read the Bible and believe in god is beyond me.
My only issue moving back is to find a remote job them i would be set 🥲
