- I’m Dominican but I haven’t lived her since I was about 6 years old but I've visited every year since, and I gotta tell you something no matter how you think you know a place because you visited its super important that you know, that visiting and living are two different places.
Because I’ve living here for the past month, and its an entire different from world, when every day isn’t an adventure. So in this video I’m going to tell you the truth.
Lets talk;
Safety, Cost of Living, Transportation and service ( plus more stuff )

1. You should know for transparency reasons
-I currently live in Puerto Rico
-But I’m trying out spending 6 months here and 6 month their to see where I like it more
-And my reasoning to move here is not just for money, its because I have 90% of my family here, so I might be willing to put up with more inconvenience because of the benefit of being with family
2. Safety
-I feel super safe, and whenever I stopped by cop I feel normal, and I don’t feel scared ( like in the US )
-However I’m also self aware, if you walk around with a gold chain and money In your pocket in the ghetto, you might get robbed ( you guys seen that video when Justin Bieber got stuck in the hood and had to do some push ups
-My advice is DR is a nice place, but their a lot necessity in this country, so you also have to be very self aware of your environment
As a runner:
-I run in the morning and its dark out and I see people
-I don’t feel like I’m in danger
-But I also don’t go out late at night
3. Service
-The worst service that I’ve gotten has been in Puerto Rico, things can be so slow and tedious
-Here in DR, everything moves faster, and it moves even faster if you pay something extra to get it done
However:
-like banks they take long time
-But mechanics see you right way, and to get my id I had to go through a process and it was fairly quick too
-I love the service here ( but its not free, keep that in mind )
People hustle here
-Example, you're on a stop light someone comes to clean your windows ( you gotta pay)
-You need parking someone watches your vehicle ( you gotta pay )
-Someone helps you with what seems to be a favor ( you gotta pay )
Lol but that’s not everything
4. Transportation
-Gas is expensive in my opinion here
-Fixing a vehicle is expensive
-Cars are more expensive
-The streets are more dangerous ( phone use, lack of lights and chaos )
So again use common sense
5. Cost of living
-Housing: $15-20k will get you something real nice ( $400)
-Utilities ( phone, internet, light and water, I find these cheap depending where you live )
-Groceries ( I’m use to spending $200 a month, here that’s a lot of cash for food, so relative to me I find it cheap, but to get protein and stuff like that, you’ll have to pay extra)
6. Closing thoughts
-Don’t forget, this is a third world country so if you want something closes to America or better its going to cost you a premium
-The people are like everywhere else In the world, you just have to take the time to know people
-My favorite thing about this island is my Family, so of course I’m bias

The Dominican Republic of the 90s is also a totally different country today. DR has grown and advanced tremendously. We have one of the strongest economies of all Latin America, great political stability, and we are now considered a high middle income country and we are definitely not 3 world anymore. There are more airports and roads now, and better electricity and water. However, yes still a lot to grow in terms of poverty and driving but I am optimistic that the DR will continue to grow and become stronger.

I lived in DR off and on for the past 12 years. I have seen changes during that time frame. I call DR home. I have met some very good people in DR, I learned from living in DR , how to work to live all the while I was living to work which is what you are taught living in the United States. I think Santo Domingo is undervalued.

Similar story. I was born here (DR), raised in the states and moved back in 2022. The best advise I could give people is to go with the flow. Don’t expect things to be like the way they are where you’re from. Be adaptable and try to learn why things are the way they are. Once you get to that point mentally, you will enjoy the crap out of this island.

GOOD! I am Glad to hear places like DR and PR slow AF! Here in America, everything is very stressful, rush, rush, crush, hustle, hustle culture, hustle mentality, which ultimately makes us all exhausted! Makes us sick, stressed, burned out, causes accidents at an all time high..etc… That is why those Third World countries they look better and they live longer! BECAUSE THEY SLOW TF DOWN!🙄 Life is short.

I love Dr., I also spent 6 months here and 6 months In the US, when I'm here my quality of life improves, the food is better, culture, money goes further. Safety is good, and I go out a lot at night , to block parties, to hoods but I'm with people that know the area.

Great vid bro! Spot on. Stores in big cities are actually quite nice with lots of imported items from all over the world. Safety isn't great in remote places and big cities. They do have armed "watchies" at most nice places or tourist spots. That said millions of people travel to the DR each year and have a wonderful experience. 10 years here, loving it!
Being Dominicano myself, visiting family there every other year, my man had some valid points that I can vouch for! Safety, I feel like can vary from person to person AND location of course. People are hustling every single day for the next peso. Overall, beautiful scenery, amazing people & FIRE food. W video manito, God bless! 🙏🏽💪🏽

A taxi driver drove me home for free at 3 in the morning when he saw me walking. During the ride he produced a bottle of Brugal which he insisted that we both sip straight from the bottle, while playing Dembow on what must have been a 20,000 watt system in his car. Best experience I've ever had travelling 😀

I’ m of Cuban descendant born and raised in NYC. Was married for a while to a Dominican woman; all her family was there so we spent a lot of time on the island.
Nice, warm and humble people overall, but the poverty is OFF THE SCALE, and witnessing that poverty day in and day out made me kind of depressed. Unlike the commonwealth of Puerto Rico, there is NO U.S. assistance like food stamps or subsidized home purchase loans in D.R. So almost everyone we met had a side hustle and most of these side hustles compromised morality.
I’ve traveled all over the island and sometimes found myself in sticky situations with the police, situations that were quickly resolved with a few $20 dollar bills!
Tourism is the main industry there and it pains me deeply to say the following:
SEX is the second biggest and pervasive income producing industry throughout the island!
Once I had a husband try to pimp-off his gorgeous wife to me...I understood the why; 2 young kids and the refrigerator is empty!
Overall D.R. Could be a PARADISE only 90 minutes from the USA if the dire economic situation could improve!!!
I know for a FACT that you won’t give this comment a thumbs-up, simply because NO ONE wants to point out the ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM, and BY THE WAY, that goes for disturbing social problems right here in the U.S. as well!!

What're you talking about? You're generalizing the entire Dominican Republic by the part of it your ex-wife took you? Not to mention that it was probably a while ago.
Tourism is not the main industry there, and in those tourist areas, most of the vendors are Haitian migrants trying to make a quick buck. Maybe learn about what we're dealing with the massive influx of Haitian migrants before you speak. Most people working in the streets are Haitian.
Again, the sex industry is almost exclusive to a certain area of DR, so why are you generalizing? Did you go to Santo Domingo? Santiago? Salcedo? San Cristobal? Puerto Plata? Most rent prices in Santo Domingo are well above $1,200 a month, not to mention to buy groceries for a small family right now you're looking at more than $300 dollars.
D.R. has a very robust economy and the amount of growth I've seen there is mind-blowing as a Dominican myself. Houses in places like Arroyo Hondo and even in a small town like Haina in San Cristobal will run more than $300,000 dollars so again, what're you talking about?

Hi Robert, well here in the USA have you seen the poor neighborhoods? The people that dont want to work here live off of the government. Again it all depends where your ex wife would take you. I’ve been to the DR and I love it there. I lived 6 months there once and had a such a great experience. You see people having minimum things and actually smile when here people have everything and still will complain. I realized they had the most important thing that we here in the USA dont have and thats family and interaction with humans. I dont even know my neighbors where I live.

I think living in the USA put negativity in people mind about other country if it's not them, a Third World country is mostly used in terms of political right and civil liberties which can also include Press freedom and in Dominica some persons maybe poor, but it's only considered third country to most East and western big counties.
I agree with this comment regarding the title or phase of Dominican republic is a third world country is incorrectly used by American blacks or latinos not clearly understanding the derogatory reference to a black country. Please stop using such racist status of a country you really don't live in every aspect of daily living.
aaaan, I've been to the DR like 5 or 6 times. I love it there. Cabarete was my fav place to stay. The motorcycles/scooters are everywhere, weaving in & out of traffic. You better know how to drive and keep your head on a swivel. However, Dominican are talented drivers. I saw a man on a bike and a woman sitting behind him carrying a table and chair....all while riding the bike.

Excellent commentary, Tommy. Sounds like a really nice place if you don't have real high economic expectations, which I don't. I imagine food is even cheaper if you do most of your shopping at open air markets rather than grocery stores. One question I have, is the water safe to drink without boiling or something? It's really nice if it is, makes life a lot simpler.
Water from the faucet is not safe to drink. We buy 5 gallon water jugs for less than a dollar

I did not feel safe... Before boarding the plane.
And our arrival was at midnight... I heard so many people telling me this crazy stories... I even wanted to spend the night in Panama city and take a day flight to Santo Domingo...
I was like the taxi driver might take us to his neighborhood and have his people to rob us...
Well after just a few day I felt perfectly safe
Those late night flights are sketchy, but it's mostly in our minds. Large groups of very loud people do that, lol. Been to DR many times and zero issues so far. Like you said, the initial view is scary, but after a day or two, it becomes normal.

I have decided to move back to DR as well, I haven’t lived there since I was 6, I’m 22 now. I’m from Samana. The driving out there is so true 😂 I’m glad I will have my mom and her man drive me around bc she doesn’t even want me to drive there plus I don’t plane on being outside all that much anyways

I have a beautiful, nice villa in a great and safe area in Punta Cana. My final price is 250K. It is 4 bedrooms with 1300 sqft. Very independent. Close to any great thing that you can think of.

We were in Punta Cana yesterday. Around 7am I saw tons of construction workers by the sides of the roads. Are they waiting for buses to take them to their work sites or waiting to be chosen to work that day? Some had their own hard hats, safety vets, & tools like levels and pick axes.

Visited about a month ago. Service employs were awesome. Hard working and friendly. Management, retail and anyone near tourist areas were aggressively putting on the hustle and were nasty if you did not buy into it. The high end tourist areas are ruining everything. And still not paying the workers.

I would like to slow travel 2-3 months in DR, that's on my list. As long as you can get good internet and digital nomad.
Great video. The only thing I would change is mechanics are big scam artist in the Dominican Republic. One tried to charge me $300 for a service and I kept saying no and the price came down all the way to 120. I just left because I was disgusted with him.but that’s pretty much everyone who offers a service in DR. Don’t believe it come visit. I’m here now. The only other thing I would change is cost-of-living here is not cheap. It’s not cheap if you want to keep the same lifestyle as in the US. Currently I pay $1500 a month for rent and it’s a small 700 square-foot condo in the Best area. What this TH-camr is talking about as far as paying $400 or less, that’s not happening in Santo Domingo unless you’re in one of the barrios. Trust me you don’t wanna pay $400 or less in Santo Domingo district national. It’s actually almost impossible. You can pay that in Villa Juana, or Gualey. 😂 They pay $100 a month. I pay over $3500 per month to maintain my lifestyle. It was cheaper for me in the US. But here, like Tommy said, to have a same lifestyle is considered premium, and you will pay more than in the US.
Oh, one other thing. When Tommy says food is cheap here, I promise you he’s only talking about going to the grocery store. And it’s not every grocery store. It’s the cheap ones like Jumbo. Because National supermercado is expensive. And Tommy is definitely not talking about eating at five star restaurants because they cost the same or more expensive than in the US.😂
If you pay 3500 monthly clearly you are renting a large mansion. So food prices shouldn't even be a concert if you throwing that money at rent ? That's nuts

I am also from Dominican Republic. I was born in Dominican Republic and came to the United States when I was just one years old since it was my parents idea and I’m rude to New York when I was three years old and came back when I was three and then I set up a life here and learn English and now I will take years old. I know fully English and I do not have an accent since I worked on that one I would like at least seven years old and now I’m here.
