    I am most flabbergasted by the fact that Russell Brand is taking notes. Imagine meeting someone you disagree with - an athiest, a Christian, a conservative, a liberal - and instead of slinging criticisms, you write down interesting/unknown unknowns that they say to further look into while listening thoughtfully. A bloody rarity in this day and age.

      Honestly, it's not rare. It's rare that you see it on this scale with this many people watching, but in the real world when 2 people are having a good faith conversation, and I CANNOT stress "Good Faith" enough here, it's how things should be. And frankly, how things used to be before everything was all about scoring political points for the onlookers all the time. When you have 2 people who are chiefly interested in communicating effectively with each other, this is what happens.

      How can you be separated from god at all as well, how does that work?
      What are demons ?

    • @Dylanschannelodoom
      @Dylanschannelodoom ปีที่แล้ว

      @@skepticalthesensible I am not religious, but I have some possible answers for you. Obviously as flawed mortal beings we can't assume that we could fully and accurately articulate these answers.
      Sin separates you from god because it takes you off the path of good, by what amount is often differing depending on the severity, but there are certain sins that everyone can easily point to as evil and people moving away from that and towards what is most commonly referred to as good, is in theory moving towards some higher power, both for yourself and the people around you. This has touched on the empowering demons thing but it will make more sense to address that with the what are demons question. Hopefully the above kind of explains the 2nd/3rd questions.
      Demons are those things in you that are dark and evil. Some people like to think they don't exist in them, but anyone who's lived long enough will tell you that's naive. Everyone loses control sometimes, everyone looks back on some of their more questionable actions and think "who was that?" or "What was I thinking?" Everyone has the capacity to spiral with their personal demons and experiences with evil that can take them away from what could've been a much better path. So when we say someone is "influenced/possessed by demons" it's usually not indicating invisible creatures, but simplifying the complex influences that drive a person to do evil into one entity.
      I don't know the Bible well enough to understand the last question fully, but I'm sure it is some metaphor, perhaps Jesus was battling both the sinners, and their inner demons, perhaps the inner demons of all people including in himself. What made people think Jesus was divine in nature was that he never heeded his demons and instead had the ability to fight them, and spent his life trying to teach that ability to others.
      I don't know what belief you hope to have, but I hope this helps give you an additional lens to look at religion through that may open your mind up to it.

      @jorge_oliveira_BeB ปีที่แล้ว

      @@skepticalthesensible Those are great questions. Most of which I am not able to offer a definitive answer, but I can definitely give a try!
      Q1: "Why would sin separate you from god?" in Isaiah 59, it discusses this exact point. Roman 2 as well. Both good reading that can help you understand better. But here is my take: sin has a consequence not only to you, but also to those around you. True Christianism is about love and loving is how you show to others that you are a true christian (a reflexion of god from you), by sinning, your reflection is not one that is Godly (as God has no sin)
      Q2: "how does it (sin) empower demons?" There are different approaches for this answer, here is one: after you sin, you often think about the consequences and often feel bad. That may sometimes create a cycle of bad/destructive behavior, which will often weaken you and makes demon's actions more effectively.
      Q3: "Do all sins separate you from god equal like murder & stealing a cookies? What level of sin causes what level of separation?" This is a hard one to understand, but some passages from the Bible seem to suggest that both of your examples create the same level of separation. Read James 2:10. The one exception seems to be the sins that lead to death (though my interpretation is that it is speaking of absence of god, that leads to death in the sense of no eternal life). Repenting and fixing the consequences of murder vs the cooking robbery are often what causes one to probably cause a big separation though.
      Q4: "What are demons ?" entities working on behalf of the enemy. these entities can be manifested in different way, but are often associated with a change in behavior of one individual or in increasing temptation towards sin for all of us.
      Q5: "If Jesus was without sin why in Bible does devil & demons come to him to battle him the same as sinners?" The enemy and demons are not tempting and attacking as a consequence of sin. Jesus was 100% God and 100% human (I know the math does not add up) and, just like all other humans, he was attacked. The separation of God makes you more likely to succumb to temptations because you need your own strength to do, and sometimes that is not enough. Although Jesus was tempted and attacked, he was able to sustain and be without sin because his human side, was very close to his Godly side.
      I have a very limited knowledge, but I still felt inclined to answer you. I'd be glad to continue the discussion in this or other forum if you'd like.

      The phrase diametrically opposed means to be completely and directly in opposition to something. The reference is to the two opposing points on either end of a diameter line drawn across a circle. The word diametrically is derived from the word diametrical, which is the adjective form of the word diameter. The word diameter is derived from the Greek word diametros, which means measuring across or the diagonal of a circle. Though the word diametrically may be used in reference to the diameter of an object or theoretical figure, it is most often used in the phrase diametrically opposed. I'm a year late to watching this. I enjoy both Russell Brand and Ben Shapiro, but I admit I tend to find myself more in agreement with Ben than Russell. But as other commenters have shared, two clearly intelligent people who don't agree entirely, having a great conversation, challenging each other, and listening to each other without calling the other a Bad Man for having a contrary opinions. I remember more of these conversations when people were able to disagree without hatred. I wish we could get back to that.
    One thing that struck me in this conversation was Russell's dislike of GDP as a marker of success in a part of the conversation where Ben had just separated Economic Fulfillment from Emotional/Spiritual/Moral Fulfillment. It felt like, and I'm prepared to be wrong, Russel's dislike of GDP as a measure was leaving the less economically successful behind and focused on those that were more economically successful rather than those that still needed some sort of assistance.
    I think, however, this position fails to recognize that the GDP and similar economic gauges don't just recognize the success of people with wealth. The more people that move out of poverty, the more people that are able to build wealth and own their own home for example, the higher that GDP will be. Further as people develop their skills and their income potential rises, so will the GDP. That doesn't just mean people going to work at jobs and accepting a minimum wage paycheck, but also includes people starting their own businesses and generated wealth for themselves and others around them.
    Indeed, I see absolutely no conflict between the kind of Spiritualism Russell talks about and Free Market Principals. I believe that lightly regulated free markets on the economic live of mankind, combined with charity, compassions and love supported by the spiritual side will always produce better results for more people than any kind of Government driven wealth redistribution or social support.
    We don't need to choose between Economics and Spirituality. Rather, we must recognize that each is important, and each is made better with the other.

    I'm listening to the full-length version of the interview as I write this, and I want to thank Russell for bringing Ben on and having this conversation. Although my own politics lean heavily to the left, my family has wildly different political views and I was raised to separate someone's political views from their inherent value as a human being. It's been really disheartening to see so many of my peers wholly refuse to recognize the humanity in people they disagree with, and to be criticized by these peers for not doing the same. I fully admit that I had a moment of hesitation before clicking this podcast, as I arrogantly assumed that it might leave me feeling frustrated. I was so unbelievably wrong.
    This conversation really illustrates just how beneficial it is to approach all discussions with an open mind and an open heart. It's so refreshing to hear these two men speak about their beliefs, expounding upon those that align and respectfully listening to another perspective on those which differ. I really hope we can work towards a place where these conversations are the norm, and not a noteworthy exception. Thank you for sharing.

    Bravo!! Words escape me to express my amazement, gratitude and just plain awe for these 2 men who navigated political mine fields with the respect and grace that is extinct in this time but so very necessary!! To be able to listen actively and not just wait to speak or berate or pound ideals into each other is so beautiful. It makes me so very sad that this is literally unheard of rather than the norm, because we as a human race COULD be in such a better space in all aspects of our lives (all of our lives) if we would just take note (as you see Mr. Brand doing) and realize how much we have in common rather than looking for reasons to continue on in this hate culture. To see how effortless having a respectful discussion on differing opinions in order to understand one another better can be. Should give us all a wage up call and force us to take a long hard look at the planks in our own eyes. To put in check the way we expect others to agree with us or be prepared for the wrath of our tongues unleashed from behind a computer or phone screen. To literally have the nasty conversation internally and come out as a much better society in the end.
    Thank you both from the bottom of my heart.

    Russell’s genuine curiosity of other people’s ideas is so amazing. It’s how I feel as a human. Sometimes when I question things and am curious about stuff people try to stuff you in a box to either hate you or like you. For example when I tried to figure out why people liked Trump and could understand those points of view, people then assumed I was a Trump supporter. No I am just curious because I live with the assumption that people are generally intelligent and good. I don’t like the idea of US vs. Them.

      I liked trump for quite a few reasons, for one, he was the most pro-LGBTQ+ president in history. I loved his work primarily for the Hispanic and black communities through prison reforms. In comparison to opposing democratic candidates, Trump seemed a lot more pro-constitution; specially when discussing the first and second amendment. I also liked the idea that he ran off of, putting America first wether it’s through foreign trade with china, becoming oil and energy independent, or securing our southern
      Border which is an absolute disaster. There’s also a lot of things I don’t like about Trump, but Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden are not better options in any way, shape or form.

Good because the abuse of power by large institutions becomes less and less frequent, bad because I fear we are seeing, as a result, the death of community.

      Ben Shapiro is as polarizing as Donald Trump. Have you ever been to his TH-cam channel? He may talk fast and with confidence, but it doesn't make him correct - on the contrary, Shapiro is distorted and his motives are fueled by religious authoritavism.
