His publications include but are not limited to: “The Strange Death of Europe: Immigration, Identity, Islam (2017),” “The Madness of Crowds: Gender, Race and Identity (2019),” and most recently “The War on the West: How to Prevail in the Age of Unreason (2022)”. Murray has also written columns for publications such as “The Wall Street Journal” and is an associate editor for “The Spectator.”

These two together… I could listen to all day.
My son was severely disabled, non verbal and had cerebral palsy and spastic quadriplegia, he also had the best laugh in the world, an amazing personality and a love for life and music until he took his last breath at 27 years old. I don’t think the value of someone else’s life should be decided by any outside force, and especially not a bunch of corrupt, lying, narcissistic politicians.
Wonderful observation from personal experience, that's the voice we need to hear more of.
Amazing that he left you such a beautiful memory! May he rest in peace.
I am a full time carer for my severely autistic 22 year son. Ill be doing this job, happily, till I die. I understand exactly what you mean mate. Reading that you lost your boy made me cry. Although my son has a mental age of a five year old, I can not imagine losing him because he's taught me more about life than any philosopher. I'm so sorry...
@@anthonybrett I was very lucky and blessed to have him in my life as long as I did, his prognosis according to Doctor’s was that they didn’t think he would live past 11 years of age, so I was blessed with many more years than that and each one of those years was a gift for me, as he was an amazing human despite his life being very difficult and him often being in more pain than anyone should be. I was very lucky to have him in my life. I wish you and your son many more years of time together, but in the end it’s never enough years when your child goes before you do, I hope that is something you never have to face. I have a lot of happy memories and the belief he is somewhere better than here and no longer in anymore pain.❤️

I just finished watching the entire Munk Debate between Douglas Murray, Matt Taibbi, Malcolm Gladwell, Michelle Goldberg. Douglas Murray is a beast at debates. Seeing Douglas Murray and Dr. Peterson discuss issues is a privilege. This is the kind of intellectual discussion that society is desperately missing in 2023.
But the left have moved away from these two, the left has gone mad all over the west

We need Douglas to publish a list of essential English literature (politics, history, philosophy, and poetry). Even if it’s only, something like ten books in each category, it could go a long way towards helping people interested in “changing their life” getting started.

I’m grateful for JP every day. I enjoy listening to him bc besides being a highly intellectual and knowledgable man he’s also a spiritual man with a conscience and a soul. So many people nowadays don’t have a soul.
Murray epitomizes the best of British civilization and culture. As an Irishman, I find it hard to acknowledge our debt to Britain but let’s face it - high watermark of human development. And our man Murray here embodies it.

It's nice to listen to people who have learned some things that work in life, but also double check each other and finally most importantly keep learning what works and sharing it with others. Leave what doesn't work for people and the earth behind where it belongs. Embrace and share what does work to have better lives and futures for as many as possible.
Talking about a person spending twenty years strapped to a board in a straight jack in the basement of an insane asylum or hospital sounds like a problem that should have been solved around 19 years and 11+ months sooner as peacefully and wisely as possible. Nobody should live suffering like that any longer than the soonest it can be solved. Error and trial until you find something better!

Perhaps the best interviewer and interviewee combination on the planet. Both of these are among the most brilliant and important minds in western civilization today. Every time they get together is a gift to mankind. That the masses across the planet can access a discussion between these two for nearly free is almost miraculous.

Jordan's interviewing skills need a bit of polishing. He tends to cut his guests off too often. He's getting better but he has a way to go. I think he hogged the conversation a bit too much here. It wasn't as bad as his Dawkins inerview though.
Absolute it’s a pleasure to be able to listen to our greatest and most liberating minds, like you say these two are a treasure.

How are they important? While I love listening to them, I can't helpt but notice that they are mostly irrelevant in the public discussion. Maybe that's because I'm German, and in my country we are not too used to non-native speaking public intellectuals. But I have a feeling that even in the Angloshpere these guys are not all that impactful. In the end, what they produce here is entertainment. Word porn. I'd love this to be otherwise. But I don't see politicians, be that in power or in the making, who make it a habit to lean on intellectual figures like that.

I am so perplexed by those Western "intellectuals" who decided that since Western civilization has imperfections, it should be destroyed. Instead, they admire adepts of any idea that might even sound nice on the surface, from communism to Islamism, as long as it helps to destroy Western civilization. It happened in Russia, it happened in Germany - but these folks learned nothing, because they hate what they have, and they don't understand the idea of gradual improvement, they need the results now.
And he's openly gay to boot. Love it.

I love Douglas Murray. He’s a voice of reason in the midst of insanity. I especially enjoy hearing him break down the reality of the nonsense his opponents are spouting. Having these two sit down together is a treat.

Both of you make me not feel crazy. My family came from Nazi Germany and my childhood in the German community warnings my entire life. As a 12 year old I told my father “we live in America that will never happen here “. Sooo…when I saw a month into Covid I saw the communist tactics and then spoke out to everyone I know. Lost lots of family and friends (also my job). Thank you! It’s the only hope not to enter into another dark period.

Our daughter has hemipalegia cerebral palsy. Never sued to get a settlement. She is now has a position as lead engineer working for Raytheon. She struggled mightily to get where she is but a huge settlement would almost certainly prevented this outcome. Against enormous odds she has persevered and become uncommonly successful
Good on your daughter and you for supporting her. I, too, have hemiplegic cerebral palsy. It’s not easy, but I still love life.

Douglas at 58mins; "I thought I could look my grand parents in the face". That's a powerful thought very powerful thing that's struck a core with me.
I completely agree. And I found the comment to have a two-fold meaning. First, that he better understood them as human beings and second, that he felt a certain type of shared-experience that they may have been proud of him for braving. I thought the statement was profound and moving.
I am a sixty six year old Woman. I have been diagnosed with many autoimmune illnesses which are slowly changing my way of life. This has made me realize that if I don't control the things I can control like my diet, I am going to become more miserable as I age. As I moniter what I eat, I have learned that I respect myself more. I have found that I can focus now on feeling more sensations that I hadnt remembered since I was a child.
The joy of being in a warm bath or pool. Also, the soft feel of a fluffy blanket or petting a cute animal.

If we concentrate on our inner self, our other senses come to the fore and fill in the gaps of what we were used to having. I am growing even though I am elderly. It's an amazing thing.
I have had to look after myself since I was a small child and I have experienced some terrible things and I was bitter for years. I have come to the conclusion that it is up to me to help me. If I can be less dependant on the outer World and be more dependant on the inner me I have found that I am on another road of self acceptance.

I've read all Murray's books since "The Strange Death of Europe", and each has been wonderful.
Its on my to do list to read his books. But its tough, because im not native speaking English and non of the books are translated, so its challenging. But ill start soon.

I really like the concept of unshakeable gratitude in the face of adversity. At the same time, my 87yr old aunt got cancer for the third time and couldn't face anymore treatment, so she opted out gracefully (IMO). We all got to say goodbye while she was not yet a wreck and in constant pain. There is no feeling of cheating and we still think of her very fondly.
Yeah, I don’t really consider that suicide. She was old and ready to go home. I hope she is resting in peace. My regards to your family.
@@jdk67 Thanks. I posted this just to show there are many perspectives on life and death. We also believe in celebrating the deceased, rather than mourning - tears are allowed.
It was also very therapeutic to put together such a celebration for my father after he passed, and a great help to my mother.
It is fine and not against any religious beliefs to let nature take its course. It's another thing to enlist a doctor to kill you to hurry it along. I hope she did the former.

I recently saw a documentary on a man, a husband with two young children, who had been in a tragic accident. He survived but as a result suffered an extremely rare condition caused by severe nerve damage which left him in a wheelchair and in constant unimaginable agony, every minute of every hour of every day.
The doctors in the video said that the condition caused the worst pain of any illness or condition known to medicine. He was on massive amounts of pain killers with only modest relief.
I felt so sad for this dear man. It was heartbreaking to watch him in obvious pain and despair, and this condition had no cure or prospect of improvement.
I wonder if he continues on for the sake of his wife and children. If I were his wife, I would make it clear to him, that if felt he could not continue on in this way, I would support him 100% in a decision to end it, with love and support. 🙏💞😢 I cannot see any joy in such a life with no hope of respite, ever.

I’ve been a student to your teachings since 2017, and I cannot help but agree with the majority of what you teach, share, voice and believe. The reason that got me to comment today is this: I’ve overheard my parents watching an Iraqi interview between a tv show host and an activist, discussing the concept of the ‘social gender’, and the conspicuous opinion -now- that gender includes the social, psychological, cultural and behavioral aspects of both biological genders and ‘supposedly’ other gender-identity. This ideology is being openly discussed here in Iraq, on the political front, but not yet socially. Us Iraqis have the not-so-intellectual attitude to care about ‘trend’ a little bit more than necessary, and to be entirely honest, I am terrified.
Iraq has been the closest thing to the host of multi-angled totalitarian despotism ever since 1978, or maybe before that. Politically, religiously, and socially, Iraq has been abused far than what’s imaginable, and it is not getting any better, not with this. Why? is the Left absolutely scared of their ‘theory’ falling out of proportion to the point they have to push it to another country to support it? Why this? People here have been confused as it is about raising their children since the 80’s, and I know it never looked like it was getting any better (at-least across my personal lifespan), but this? This where our politics still doesn’t accept homosexuality?
I always agree with your notion about specifying a place to stay the hell away from, I never thought though, that this place would be my country, not to this extent.
I hope this gets discussed by intellects like you, who search and seek the truth, and I hope you see this, because truly, never have I felt before to this degree, that things are spilling uncontrollably out of hands.

Wow, that’s crazy. Thanks for sharing. Who would have thought that in Iraq, of all places, the politicians and the media would try to misuse this topic to their advantage. Crazy, how it’s even spread to Iraq. But also not surprising, since a totalitarian state or dictatorship will always use trends to further expand their ideology or strengthen their influence.

All 10 Commandments need to be properly balanced within the lively virtues: chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, patience, kindness, and humility. Aristotle posits 10 categories of existing things: substance, quantity, quality, relation, place, time, position, doing, having, and being affected. Each of these terms was defined by Aristotle in pretty much the same way we would define it today, the one exception being substance.

I would put this conversation on my mantle as evidence on why the world needs to move away from short form information seeking and thought and manipulation. These long form discussions, which encompass so much of life, give us the depth and breadth not to just consume information, but to learn how to think about it, discuss it, and learn from it.

@kimchimasala. Don’t look for heroes. They won’t rescue you. They can help, but they are only human and are as prone to moral error as the rest of us. Some of the responses here are over the top. The search for heroes is a bad sign. Learn everything you can from everyone. But keep your dignity and independence.

I'm genuinely grateful for this video and the conversation presented. I'm a practicing therapist (LCSW) for the past 19 years. I've worked in Drug Court and with veterans, adolescents and now inpatient (suicidal) adults. I am not surprised that non-acceptance and ingratitude (bitterness) causes and prolongs suffering. I'm not discouraged or threatened in any way to challenge victimization, blaming, and demanding things without effort...if I'm drummed out of this profession I will dig potatoes or pour driveways. I appreciate your work, both Doug and Dr. Peterson; and I look forward to more books, content, and continually challenging the pervasive deceptions so many desperately want.
Similar story here, though I started out with risk assessment in the ER, then went to acute inpatient, and finally moved on to private practice outpatient. I'd be very interested to pick your brain outside of youtube. I'm with a good group of fellow Peterson acolytes, though most are LPCs. I'm the lone LCSW.
I’m a 35 year Master’s prepared LMSW as well and I had to retire early due to woke culture creeping in on our unit. I refused to play identity games whether it came with pronouns or endorsing “furries” who wanted to be called “kitty”. I was accused of being “trans phobic” and a “Trump lover” but I believed I cared deeply for the mental health well being of patients. I refuse to co-opt in the insanity and happily retired. Thank God! I’ll find other ways of being in service to others
Therapists like yourselves are being drummed out of the profession by politically zealous licensures and idealogically bound institutions of "higher" learning.

@@AB-nj4ex If you thought it was bad 10 years ago you'd really hate it now because now they beat you over the head with idealogy and then infantilize you with gift cards for feeding them back their own idealogy. What I will say is for most people myself included when you've finally had enough of letting drugs ruin your life and making it a living hell, you can quit no matter where you are. I got sober in a VOA homeless shelter, while I was there I witnessed tremondous abrupt violence, suicide, drugs were everywhere, corruption amongst the staff everything from having sex with residents, aquiring drugs for them, stealing from residents, faking drug test results, planting contraband etc. Yet despite all of that, including a SWAT team raid of the facility after a resident in meth induced psychosis attempted to murder everyone in the facility with a particularly brutal instrument, whom we finally were able to lock in the bathroom where he proceeded to hang himself and die before the SWAT team arrived. Despite all of that horror, depravity and drugs I was able to stay sober and rebuild my life. It took monumental effort but once I realized I was the person causing all of my problems and that my solutions to the vicissitudes of life we're causing my life to be unbearable, I finally reached a bottom from which I could rebuild a foundation for the rest of my life. Point being you can change, no matter where you find yourself.
So very much enjoyed this interview. I really connected with the idea of exposure therapy and facing your fears. As a small child I was absolutely terrified by car washes, I thought these machines were going to break through the windows and we'd die violently. I would have a major melt down, some adults in my family thought it was hilarious to take me through them and watch me go into hysterics, laughing at my terror. But my father took me aside. Explained to me to trust him, I would be safe, he would take me through it and I would be ok. I remember him sitting me in the front seat and knowing that my father (in my childs eye) was the bravest strongest man ever and he would never lie to me, I took a deep breath and sat quietly while we drove through the car wash. I was never afraid again. After listening to this interview I see my father taught me a life skill that day. Ever after when I find fear gripping me by something, I move forward into it, facing my fear, not allowing it to control me. I am ever grateful to my father for moments like this in my life. And it's wonderful to hear JP and DM discuss why this works. To me fear is a flag to pay attention but then not to allow it to over come you. Courage is necessary to live life fully.

Very thought provoking, I’m 68 and made the mistake to start listen in bed… I just had to keep listening and thinking about fear, courage, purposeful living etc… meaningful wonderings about life. When I mourn for Scruton having passed away, I see Douglas Murray and I realize there is still a heartbeat in the UK.
It is a privilege to listen to those two amazing men. It's so rare to have intellectuals of this level, but still humble in a profound way.
