This is so relatable, I was on my terminal activating a Conda environment. My brother sees it and immediately starts freaking out saying, " why are you hacking" i was so disappointed in him we have to do something about these Hollywood hacker films
As a green hat who’s learning how to hack, i can tell you right now. It’s not fun waiting hours to days to WEEKS for a brute force attack to complete (ethically ofc)
Another video jam packed with information! It's great to see all the different ways hacking has been used in movies and Mr Robot is the most realistic I have seen on screen
1. nmap is a network scanner, not a hacking tool. 2. Security through obscurity is the reliance on secrecy as the main method of providing security. Like obfuscating your source-code, changing ports to non-standard, or creating a proprietary encryption program. It's absurd because it's mostly sticking you head in the sand wasting time, instead of focusing on actual issues. 3. It's so mind-numbing how little security measures governments and corporations employ. More people should know about it to keep them accountable, instead of shooting the messenger. Thanks for making this cool video!
Operation: Takedown really should have had a mention. Also, 'sudo' works just fine even if you're root. I sometimes forget that I've already 'sudo -s' and prefix with sudo.
Another cool piece from SumSub love it. Also MR Robot is an epitome of research done right on the movies. BTW Hello Security enthusiasts I was wondering what sorta content are you guys fascinated by... would love to know.
22:07 Security by obscurity is NOT the same as Security by obfuscation. As you said, security by obfuscation works by making it hard to read. Security by obscurity means that your network is secure, as long as no-one figures out the weaknesses, because you made everyone promise to keep it a secret. Which is why professionals mock it, because a hacker worth their salt *WILL* figure out those weaknesses even without being told.
So weird. I JUST watched Wargames a couple of nights ago so it's fresh in my memory. I agree that it's totally unrealistic that he would just happen to dial into the department of defense _and_ gain access so easily. But. I think the films best claim to accuracy is the prediction of deep learning. The WOPR computer does exactly what modern day deep learning algorithms do. It learns from past experience and gets better with every iteration. The film also accurately predicts and portrays neural networks quite well in that the WOPR will take in data sets and use that to inform it's learning process. I was very deep into phreaking in the early 90s. It was a fun time to be a geek.
Making mistakes on purpose is common in creative works. I recall writing a very detailed scene about the antagonist of one my works making homemade chlorine gas, something I know how to do because of my background, it was only after I wrote it that I thought "holy crap, I better change that so someone doesn't kill themselves!"... I got over twenty contacts from people telling me that scene was wrong...
25:10 lil comment on the sudo comment. Sudo doesnt affect the commands in my experience and i sometimes use it when logged in as root cause i forget im in root lol
In War Games it was a backdoor to the ministry of defence. Not saying it was realistic but in the context that programmers leaving a backdoor was pretty popular even in the high ranks back in the day.
Aha running sudo when your already in a root shell yehhh that's so unrealistic.... Jk it has no purpose yeh but as someone who works in Linux shells alot I still do it out of habit when running alot of commands that usually require sudo
What, no Johnny Mnemonic? Awwww.. I know that was just after Jurassic Park but also had a unique visual hacking style. Then of course later on a dolphin hacking a human mind..
@@Sumsubcom I have to say, that was intended as constructive. I am REALLY VERY VERY impressed with your channel. Super production, good research and well presented (both presenters). I know channel growth is good but I expect it to rocket up even more.
I could only imagine what the next hacking movie portrays… Nigerian princes? IRS calls? Odd how the hacks haven’t changed in decades. War driving, war dialing, war emailing? It’s all the same thing… money. Crypto could make a crap shoot of all of that.
It's slightly incorrect about PIN not being stored on cards. They are. At least here in the UK - in the chip. The chip has a hash and there is a counter. You get one of those bank card readers and you can check quickly if your PIN is correct or not. The lockout exists on the card by presumably just setting a bit. You can sniff the encryption by putting a Pc between the card and the reader, much like JC does in Terminator. What isn't realistic is the way the numbers come up in that movie - it would have to try every code from 0000 to 9999 sequentially, not whatever that program is iterating through.. Now I don't know if PINs were stored on the magnetic stripe or not, but I think it's more than possible ...

Actually in Borne identity they just changed keyboard layout to Russian and typed the same keys as in English. So this gibberish is not random.
Mr. Robot has one of the most accurate depiction of hacking in a series that I've seen so far.
Also a good dystopian progression story.
Yeah that's series is soo good and the software are preety real on it
Really good show indeed
Rami won an Emmy for his performance.
Why does this channel have this low number of subscribers? The production is through the roof! Good job!
Exactly
Because it’s relatively new (april 2021)
69.6K. The perfect number of subscribers
Sumsub is an established company with a new channel. And they aren't using many hashtags to get their vids in front of more eyes

Mr Robot is so underrated series but it is the most accurate to reality in terms of both hacking as well as a society with anxiety and depression.
Watching hackers in movies is like watching a doctor trying to draw blood with a carrot from a severed arm.

Hacking can be as sophisticated or as simple as you want it to be. It is only limited by the hackers skill and imagination.
