We did use them for some of the shots, but many were great without. Just depends on the lighting you're in.

No, but you want a higher shutter speed and even stick to f2-f4. Too thin and your camera will focus on the smoke too easily. Also, slower arm movements make more of those "plumes", where faster will give you the thinner fog. Also, point the smoke away from your subject or at the most straight up in the air near them. Windy days are no good for smoke bombs and lastly try to use lighting or do not shoot in darker shade. It's hard for you to fix skin tones if they're entirely washed out by smoke.

Just buy from Enola Gaye, they have the BEST smoke grenades. They create a thick cloud of smoke and photograph very well.
