Very exciting! There is a lot to be said for Spokane, Post Falls, and Coeur d’Alene. As a rep for Buck Knives i’ve spent some time there. Eight month-long winters, though, are too long for me.
Five years ago, I fell in love with southern Utah, and particularly Kanab. There is a highway traveling through five National parks, roughly parallel to the state line with Arizona. Outstanding scenery and the variety of material is great. The water is clear and it tastes great.
This is your opportunity to build a super shop. I suggest you put sand traps under your sinks and floor drains. Cheap to make on your own.
The use of Pex is not widely agreed-upon. What is the opinion of your local plumbers there in Utah?
Check in with Tesla upfront about a solar system. You can have that thing paying for itself in seven years by rolling in an electric car or truck. I don’t mind running a big slab saw all day as well as a Tumblr 24 seven 365 when the sun is shining.😊

Congrats on moving to Utah! It's always been one of my favorite States in the West. Utah's portion of the Colorado Plateau province, and especially southeastern UT, is my idea of a wonderland that has no equal anywhere else. Enjoy your new home!

Look into "FRP" = fiberglass reinforced panels. They are used in commercial kitchens, bathrooms and are durable and easy to keep clean. They are thin, about 1/8" thick or so and would be installed directly over the existing drywall with very little prep of the old drywall needed other than priming it if there is no paint on the walls already so adhesive will stick well.
Just what I was thinking, I helped build a commercial licensed kitchen a couple of year ago.Thanks Joel forgot what they called the stuff, easy to cut and install, like Joel said just fix the uneven walls, holes..etc. Slap it down your done , washable, water proof, no painting, priming. I think they also use the stuff in campers, traliers.

@@lubanshenkel6967 YW! :) Retired General Contractor of over 35 years.....Primer or paint will help it adhere better longer but is not absolutely needed especially if he is just renting.
I'm not a construction specialist. Although, have had a really good handyman do lots of work. In areas with moisture...like kitchens and baths he recommended durable washable surfaces with kitchen and bath paint done in 2 coats. It has held up very well. Good luck and I can't wait to see your new shop.

Get some galvanized sheet metal 4X8 sheets around the whole perimeter of the shop. Stand the sheet metal up on the 4ft side it would look great. Four feet from the floor up would be easy to maintain. Just food for thought.
Alkyd paint on the shop walls, it is amazingly tough and in white it can reflect very well and make the entire shop look more evenly lit. Have fun.
Hey!...the plywood is a great idea!. Finished side out will look great!. I have not checked lumber prices is quite some time, but if it's anything like the prices here it may get a little expensive going that route. But the labor factor is heck of a lot easier than tearing out all that old drywall and hanging new. So, I think that's a great idea you have!. plus, it will look pretty dang good too! Looking forward to seeing it all finished. Glad to see the Saturday night specials are back! Rock on bud!

One option I have in my shop which might work for you is pegboard. You can attach it right onto the existing wall. With this you wouldn’t have to mess with your electrical device boxes. You could then hang all your accessories. From the peg board. Definitely cheaper than putting plywood up. You could get really fancy and paint your pegboard. And paint shadow for your particular tool/item. 8:10

Just a thought. Some of the walls could be peg board that you spray white. That would give you lots of hanging options. Also, I know you're very busy but I sent you an email this week if you have a sec and could read it. Glad you're in such a perfect location!!!!! 😊
When I bought my semi last year, I partially moved from Post Falls down to Cedar City. Still kicking around if I like Utah life, but I don't miss dealing with snow every time I had to travel to and from the Spokane area. I understood your reason to move, loud and clear.

As you were speaking, I was thinking plywood. It will allow you to hang cabinets, work benches, and anything else you want, anywhere you want.
You have your work cut out for you. Your dream shop will be awsome no matter what you do to it. Are you leaving you cars outside in the snow and ice? It's always fun to learn about a new place. Keep the dream alive and have fun whole doing it. 😷⚒
I myself would repair the drywall, tape and mud the seams, texture, prime, and paint with a good enamel paint like is used in bathrooms. Oh yeah. Replace those fluorescent lights with LED lighting. Gotta have good lighting.

I am so happy that everything worked out for you guys and southern utah, is such an amazing place! You have some of the best landscapes, in the country, as far as im concerned! And the geology of the state is so varied, you pretty much have your pick of whatever you want to hound! And talk about fossils! You have the best kind of fossils to study there! Dinosaur fossils pretty much are the pinnacle of the fossil world! Lol!
And i put my recommendation for wall covering for the shop under the persons original comment, because it really is the best suggestion. FRP really is the best way to go.
Great SNS, as usual, And im just sure that you will have utah mapped out as to what type of rock can legally be found where, in no time! There is a whole new world of rocks, open to you now! You can never have too much insulation. I would add some under the plywood paneling. (Like they put under siding.). I'm so excited for you two! I hope you love it there!

Some Pine plywood has a nice pattern to it. It can be stained, whitewashed or painted.
Lowes has "15/32-in x 4-ft x 8-ft Southern Pine Sanded Plywood" for $51/sheet.
Very durable.
Don't throw away your shovel, Cedar City has 51.7 inches of snowfall per year.

Insulation of all walls is important, ( ceiling too if not already ) so glad you have it. I like the wood walls in your high intensity use areas. It gives you flexibility and many options for what you will have in that area, which can change as your vision and use changes. I am sure you know the value of a good reliable heat source ( and lighting ) .They are so important. Have fun designing and using your shop. FKS

Congrats on the move. Sounds like it is a great place to settle. Have you thought about plastic or laminate paneling for any of the walls? Even if you use plywood...it might be nice to paint it a gray tone to go with the floors. I know it's just a shop but it can also be a place that makes you excited to work in. 😊

The epoxy floor looks great. Looks like you put the clear coat on top, too 👍 I think pegboard would be a nice addition to your workshop. I had a good friend that lived in Cedar City. He thankfully sent me some beautiful rocks and minerals from the 3 Peaks area before he left. I'm glad yous found a nice place to move to. That sounded like it would have been QUITE the move! Might try tile. As a bench cover and/or back splash. You can get 18"'X18" tiles. If you go with a glossy white, it would help reflect light.

Congratulations on the new place hope you guys settle in soon! You had a video about a couple months ago about the Chicago electric Harbor Frieght double 3 pound tumblers, and they were out of them for a while, but they have offered a new very similar product for about the same price just to let your viewers know that it is available now

Possibly fiberglass panels, durable, can wipe clean easy. Same stuff they use for RVs and commercial properties like storage units
I would like to explore Utah. Good choice.
I have a cat sanctuary and have habitats that the walls needed to be waterproofed and easy to clean. We used a rubberized floor paint on luan plywood walls in one of the habitats. It has worked very well. The walls still look good after nearly 15 years of cat use. And no deterioration of the luan underneath. It may be possible to use the rubberized floor paint on your drywall walls or plywood if you go that route. Also possibly floor vinyl could be used behind your lapidary equipment. We have used that as well but the floor paint was easier to apply and looks better.

I first thought ship-lap cedar for the walls, but I think your idea of plywood might be a better option. Finish it with a waterproof coating for moisture and it would be able to support whatever shelving you needed. Heaver items would need to be screwed through to the studs.
Ship-lap cedar would be really nice, but that is far outside my budget.
Look into thin cut stone for the walls, put on cement board and install with latycreete mortar everything about rocks
French cleats on the plywood walls. You can add shelves/tables/cabinets wherever you want and be able to move it around whenever you need to.
Rockhounding Utah has the most inaccurate coordinates! So many places were so off the mark I had to look at their little hand drawn maps and just figure it out from there. They just came out with a new version but didn’t update anything. So frustrating that nobody bothered to fix the old problems.
A lot of the rockhounding books getting reprinted is just a cash grab.
Can do the drywall but for a seen wall try skatelite. Super durable and flexible and would last a long long time.

I'm a Plumber....PEX does not hold up to UV light. It will become brittle and fail. Either keep it covered or go with copper for your exposed plumbing.
Welcome to Utah. I grew up in PNW but have lived here 35 years. I love the geology and small rock collecting here. Only 19% of Utah land is private, so it's actually quite difficult to trespass. Instead, you have to be careful of other things for different reasons. I found your channel when you put out your video on the location near Nephi. I came to learn that introduction to new sites is best done by watching a video (you did a good job). From there I read up on it, but the whole process was much easier. I visit So. Utah often so if you want some company on a trip, let me know. Hintze's geology book is good but a bit outdated (at least my printing is). My version from college says the Earth is approximately 4 billion years old; newer texts say 5 billion now. Funny I don't remember most of those billion years.

@@CurrentlyRockhounding Things to consider: Signage is not always clear for the NMs on many roads. There are centuries-old collection areas by pioneers and descendants in the current GSNM boundaries, so they are unfortunately currently not available. But it's not easy to tell. In the early 2010's some high-ranking BLM and Dept. of Interior administrators became quite aggressive with almost anybody collecting specimens in much of the Southeastern part of the state and falsely accused some Utahns of collecting native artifacts. Personally, I wouldn't show or talk about any rocks if I had collected in that portion of the state. Even though there is no credible evidence anyone in those cases did anything improper, it ruined their lives. Finally, some native tribal lands are not always clear when bordering BLM lands--I give wide berth to those areas.
The only thing that i think would ever be an issue is the slab saw, that will create a lot of moisture so either the green board or a vacuum to pull the moisture from the saw to an air water/oil separator then vent to outside.
I'd highly recommend that u look into wetwall panels if u can get them over there. Very popular over here in the uk as its durable and easy to clean. Would be much better than plasterboard imo.
Mud and paint the walls maintenance white, it's a moisture barrier and reflects more light per watt. You'll save money and time that could be used for other elements. That's a lot of room for a dream shop, drawing the layout and testing options for optimal workflow can help with deciding where everything goes. I could see a central benchtop in there, but you'll know what's best for your purposes. I'm a design geek so making the most of every square foot is a biggie for me. I love a blank slate like you have there.
T&G plywood 4 ft up from the floor,so no furring strip needed. Peg board to the ceiling for hanging everything. both can be painted,I'm half way there. There is a Southern Utah/Nevada rock club.
I put plywood up over the the drywall and mark the studs so I know we're they are so if I what to hang something up I don't have to try to find the studs
1x6 or 1x8 rough cedar looks great. Helps with bugs also 👍😎👍
That would be nice but it would also cost me like $8000 to do my shop in that since a 7/8 in. x 8 in. x 12 ft. Kiln-Dried Cedar Board is $40
No reason to tear out the existing drywall as you already have insulation. As Joel mentioned, FRP would be great. 4' high wainscoting, patch and paint above and the ceiling. Wire and plumb inside the walls first, then put the FRP over the top. Or FRP first and run wiring in conduit. I wouldn't run PEX outside the walls, however convenient it might be. Easily damaged, and possibly not permitted by building code.
My first priorities would be power, lights, and a sink with a nice drain board.
No LEDs if at all possible; I hate those things! SCOTUS just ruled that the Chevron Doctrine, the case that said regulatory agencies could just make up new rules at will, is unconstitutional. This means that in the future we may not be forced to use LED bulbs! At any rate, use fixtures that accept standard lightbulb bases. I hear that incandescent bulbs can also be ordered from overseas...
How about drywall and get a really good waterproof paint. Maybe use an exterior grade paint so surfaces are washable??
I hung sheetrock and then covered 2 walls with a 10 mil plastic. When my saws spray, it just runs down the plastic.

One thought I had is plywood as a Wayne’s coating of sorts by using it floor to four feet. 4’ covers most incidental damage and you could do the entire room. Drywall 4’ and up. Just a thought. Moving sucks but I look forward to learning about southern Utah but, yeah, moving sucks. lol take care

Is there some wall equivalent to like commercial bathroom vinyl? Easy to clean. If you have an exterior drain for rock water, you're going to end up with cement, unless you have some clever drainage plans?
There is no humidity in southern Utah.
If you can afford it plywood over the drywall is my choice . thanks for sharing , moving to another state is a big deal , We didn't know how much stuff we had till ya start loading . lol
When you're well nested in a house it really doesn't look like much stuff but then when it's all boxed and you start moving it that is a whole other thing.

There are 3 universities in his area, if memory serves. (Iron and Washington County)
Drywall can be patched easily when it gets damaged. Except in wet areas.
But those patches always stand out unless you do a lot of work to hide them. That's my big hangup with it. Is drywall well suited for a shop?
@@CurrentlyRockhounding most garages are drywalled in my state. I was a sub contractor for years so I forget not everyone has been taught how to patch. But yes it takes at least 3 passes of mud and scraping before you sand if youdont want to see it. It's the paint that gives me issues. I seem to have to repaint the whole wall.
@@CurrentlyRockhounding Buy five gallons of flat white Kilz (latex paint not sealer) for a good moisture seal and it hides flaws, plus the bulk buy saves money. You will have enough for all walls and ceiling 2-3 coats. Self-adhesive fiberglass mesh is the quick way to bond seams. The key to quick and good looking joint compound work is not adding too much at once. First coat fills gaps, second coat smooths and if you really want a clean look, a third, with progressively wider knives. I prefer dust control mud but you can leave the garage door open with an exhaust fan so standard mud is cheaper. Sanding sponges and a quality sanding pole with abrasive pads (not fiberglass) make quick work of everything above 5-6 feet reducing fatigue as well. If you were about a thousand miles closer I'd bring my tools and pitch in lol

Living in Spokane, we were on a fairly busy road and sometimes I would get comments like "I saw you unloading groceries from your car on my drive today we should hang out sometime"...etc. I never liked that. People more than once crossed that line, which was uncomfortable.
While I'm not keeping where we are at a secret, I will say there's not a huge value in publicly stating it over and over.
