Nice tip about drilling that hole in a combination square and then putting there your plasma cutter nozzle while dragging the combination square along the edge of the sheet metal plate. I also liked the design of the side cable hangers and the way the chain used to hold the 2 gas bottles was added onto the cart
Thanks a ton! That modified square has been really handy. I drilled the hole centered on the 1" mark, so I can just set the square to 1" less than my depth and go for it.
Tim, nice design and finish quality. Only upgrade I suggest is bending push handle pipe into a wide “U” or trim exposed ends off. That is less likely to snag on your clothes or cable.
I recently purchased a new larger MIG machine to supplement my entry level unit and my first project is fabbing a new welding cart. After watching both of your vids on the topic, I'm shamelessly copying pretty much your complete design which I think is nearly prefect. Thanks for sharing!!!!
nice welding trolley tim the only thing i would add is a piece of upright tube on the front that is telescopic with a 45 degree fork on the end of it for hanging your mig torch/tig torch on instead of leaving it on the weld table or lap over the welder having it telescopic is good for if you are sitting welding or standing welding cheers from down under
That's a great idea! I do have a magnetic holder, but it's pretty often that I just flop the torch over the machine and once in a while it falls on the floor right when I'm holding something in place.
Nice cart! You must have really enjoyed seeing your plans come to life. Only change I’d suggest is a pull handle higher than a few inches above the knee-a vertical pull handle welded to a front corner would permit free access to the welder’s panel. I bought the 30 in. x 16 in. Two Shelf Steel Service Cart from Harbor Freight for my small stick welder & plasma cutter but the machine cables came out lower than the shelves’ 3” high walls. I welded a table to go on the top shelf. The machines rest on the table, bringing the controls and displays to chest level. For each side, I welded basic cable tamers to the top edges of the table. The cart, with a shelf added above the bottom one, holds everything for stick welding, including angle grinders, PPE and consumables. One day I’ll attach a flip up table to a welding cart, if not this one.
Good Morning Tim. My name is David and I am in Zimbabwe. I have just bought a Mig welder and I too want to build a cart so this gave me some great Ideas. Thanks
Tim , you do nice work I have build a few welding carts and one thing I learned ( The Hard Way ) when it comes to wheels the bigger they are the easier it rolls with a heavy bottles and the cart would fall over ( another painful lesson ) my point it"s never a bad thing to go big on wheels
I'll probably attach some corner blocks to keep it in place. It doesn't take too much of a wild ride in my space, but it would be a real bad day if one of my machines took a dive.
Nicely done, Tim. Learned a lot from watching you weld the different pieces - how you held the lance and positioned yourself for different angles etc... great video!
Sinsei Tim, *Can you do video on why the 7018 starts with a bit of porosity in the bead at the very begining?* Ive noticed this in your 7018 beads as well. Thank you 🙏 for all your hard work and dedication ❤
I have been training myself how to weld the last year or so, and I finally decided I want to make a proper welding cart. I wasn’t expecting this video to be so educational about various tools and the techniques… very well done, thank you !
Very nice, Tim. It’s interesting on how all of our welding cart needs differ. I made mine for my welder and plasma cutter on the top, side by side, with a cabinet below and the two cylinders at the back as you did. Sorry I haven’t been around much lately. Unfortunately, life got in the way for some time.
Hi Mel, Great to hear from you! It's funny that you mention that. As soon as I finished this, I looked at my plasma cutter and thought 'Dang...I should've made a place for this on the cart.' Maybe a mod or rev B for that some day.
Very nice! I like the "hooks" for hanging hose/wire. Also, thanks for the tip on going too slow, creating dross with a plasma torch. I just purchased an inexpensive one from Vevor and will be cutting the frame on my Jeep then adding the replacement "caps" so the frame will be strong again. Less dross makes life easier. Jeep frames have become notorious for rusting out due to salt on the roads in Northern states.
Tim I really enjoy your information on setting welders and tips on welding different metal thickness with rods. Can you do something on how to torch cut thick metals using propane and oxygen bottles. And what to look for in the flame to know if I need to add or reduce any of the gasses. Thanks.
Nice one I bought an off the shelf welding cart just as a stop gap till I build one ( it’s terrible lol but does the job) This is given me the motivation to get mine done
A great cart. I will refer to this as I build mine. Of course every cart will probably be unique but similar. So while I will use this as a reference, I'm sure it will be a little difference in that final layout. But thanks for the ideas and things to think about. Thumbs Up!
Hello there, that’s amazing work!!!but I was just wondering I’m planning to go for welding in college, and we’ll I want to learn some welding and buy my own welder and idk who to go too,and we’ll im just wondering for a opinion is it better to get my own welder and learn?,or wait until college?.
Nice build, Tim. Well done. Love the brackets you made to store your cables & hoses. Nice design. That will stick with me as I once got a serious injury from one of those J-hooks from a cheap, store bought weld cart. Now I know what my next project will be!
Thanks! I've had more than one encounter with the bent hooks I put on my last one... They sell those round discs at my local steelyard, so it's pretty easy and they work really well.
As a boilermaker I'm think this dude is such a nerd with his welding jacket, the full length gauntlets and the fixture tabe. BUT you create such good work so I can't even be mad 😂
I bought a welding cart and it has good wheels and locking ones in the front. It has 2 cutouts for a tank or flip it over for just one. Only thing I'm not sure where I bought it, maybe Amazon.
Looks good Tim! I ordered a new mig welder, and didn't realize it's 26 inches long, so I'll be making a new cart. I picked the wheels like yours from Harbor Freight yesterday, in 8 inch / 3 inch.
Nice! That's a healthy size machine. I used the 8 inch wheels and 3 inch casters from Harbor Freight on my last one and it's rolled around great, much better than most of the ready made ones.
Tim, great video’s watch them all the time. Just bought the same welding table, could you tell me where you buy your accessories, clamps, 90, straight guides for the table. Thanks
Great build, that welder looks nice. I've replaced all chains on my welders with a metal strap and a single hand screw. No more floppy bottles,it drove me crazy every time I moved the machine. Are they making a watercooler by HTP?
Thanks! I may have to try the metal strap on my next one. HTP does have a water cooler that it can connect directly to their machines so that you don't have to turn on a separate unit.
Tim, Some great tips in this video. Love the semi-freehand and templated plasma cutting 👏👏 On plain steel, particularly with lap welds, a lot of car body guys use a ‘weld-thru’ copper-based primer on the lapped surfaces. Thanks for taking the time to explain the design, and construction of the project. Regards Robert Sydney, Australia
I have bought them from all over the place. A lot of them come from Amazon, some from Harbor Freight and some I just google around. For machines, USA Weld carries a lot of accessories and HTP welding machines that are outstanding. Full disclosure, they sponsor the channel. While these machines aren't the cheapest on the market, after a couple years of using them extensively, they are extremely high quality and offer a great value compared to some of the brands distributed through welding supply stores. There's a link to their site in the description.
Great Job Tim!! I'd like to build a cart like yours for my HTP 2500 arriving tmrw, do you have a set of plans for sale?? Also I thought you did a fantastic job on the 2500's video manual, I'll refer to it often, I'm sure! Thanks, Doug 😊
It's an awesome machine! You're going to love it! I don't have plans available, other than what's on the video previous to this one where I sketched it out.
That's a great suggestion! In my space, it doesn't go for too much of a wild ride, but it would be a bad day if that machine took a dive. I'm thinking that I'll add some sort of retainers on the corners. The door on this machine comes down pretty low, so I need to keep the side clear.
Happy for you 🤜 Very nice looking cart. Awesome table, so glad you have it so I can lust over it 😂🤤Just watched some of your older vid, same great welds, but even better videography, you are improving and we are all the benefactors. Thanks for sharing!
Just an FYI if you do breathe in the fumes from galvanized metal and welding, drinking some milk, will help with headaches. This is from a old friend welder, old school.
Or…why do I have a bedroom that looks like a weld shop? 😃 I set up this area to be clean for filming and chose paint that’s easy to repair. In all reality it’s a bit of a mess in some areas behind the camera.
Thanks Tim. Great cart design and execution. I’ve been welding from time to time for approx 10yrs. Some for work but mostly as a hobby. I find your content really helpful.. so much so that I have also subscribed to your online courses.. great btw. I’ve recommended them to friends.. and, If you’re reading this and haven’t checked out Tim’s courses- do so! It’s a great way to learn and build confidence in the different modalities that you don’t know.. or remember what you forgot.. until you struggle a bit and finally remember or figure it out. Thanks a ton, I really appreciate that! I haven't made a video covering the HTP 2500. It's not on the market yet, but will be released for sale in early July. (I got one early to make videos for their website explaining how to operate it) I do have a video with some pulsed MIG on their Pro Pulse 220. The fundamentals of Pulsed MIG on this machine is pretty similar, though it's more capable, largely because the double pulse is fully adjustable. I'll have some info on it in coming out in the coming weeks.
Hi,my brother, thanks for your video,I have learned a lot from you, you're work is cute, now my problem is one,how can I purchase this htp 2500 machine,I like it ,l love you, Eugene from South Africa Limpopo province
I don’t remember the exact cost of materials, but it was in the ballpark of the better HF cart. It’s not about saving a buck, this is night and day more sturdy, has much better wheels, is exactly the right size, holds dual cylinders and is designed with a place for everything. That being said, the HF carts aren’t too bad, I’ve used several of them.

Hey Tim, been watching your vids, great job. I’m thinking about getting into flux core as a hobby, and am pondering, besides an angle grinder, what should I get for cutting stock, a chop saw or a band saw? As seen in this vid, you are using a chop saw but I’m concerned about the little metal bits removed by the blade flying everywhere. Is there a good way to handle this so my grandkids don’t step in metal bits? They are forever barefoot no matter what I tell them. Thanks!
Thanks! That's a great question and honestly those little metal chips are a real pain. I built a cart with a chute that catches a lot of them, but when I'm cutting tubing, they fly out the end of the tube and spread all over the place. A bandsaw is a quieter option and the chips are much more tame. Worldtraveler's suggestion of a portable bandsaw is a great one for the money. Personally, I'm not very good at cutting tubing precisely with a portable bandsaw, so I prefer a horizontal bandsaw. There are some that are a portable bandsaw mounted on a base for around $200 on Amazon. My buddy built his own base/guide for a Harbor Freight portable bandsaw and it works really well. There are some ideas for those around on the interwebs. Here's a link to the bandsaw that I have: amzn.to/42ly6BB . I've had it for a couple years and it took a bit of messing with to get it to cut straight. Since it's been dialed in, it's worked pretty good for me over the last 3 or so years. Floor stand models are a bit better if you have space and budget for that, but it's definitely not necessary for hobby work.

I used .030” (.8mm). A size up or down would work fine too, but this is the size I use for almost everything.

From around 22 gauge to 5/16” or so.

@@TimWelds I swear I'm more accurate with an angle grinder. But I have that cheap vevor. It cuts square enough for the girls I go out with.
Do you sell plans?
I don't right now, though I'm working on a site to do that in the near-ish future. I'll definitely post an announcement when that happens. Thanks!
