Baker street for me one best songs from the 1970´s so timeless and good. Gerry Rafferty received
the 1978 Ivor Novello Award for best song musically and lyrically. Thanks Sarah! 🎷🎤

Love this song. Especially the sax solo. In 1972 Gerry Rafferty was in the Scottish folk rock band Stealers Wheel & had a big hit with "Stuck In The Middle With You". Later on, he went out on his own & then had the big hits "Baker's Street", "Right Down The Line" & "Night Owl".

@@SarahDengler The sax solo was by Raphael Ravenscroft. Had one (I think) solo album, but worked mostly as a session musician.

Only reason there was a sax solo, is because their guitar player was sick that day. So they grabbed whoever they could find hanging around the studio, and wrote him a (rubber) $30 check to play sax for them.

Great reaction, many thanks. Just to add to other comments on the context of this beautiful song that came out when I was a teenager. It is called Baker Street after a street in London that is famous (incidentally) as the home of the fictional Sherlock Holmes. In real life Gerry Rafferty had to regularly travel down from Scotland to meet with lawyers concerning a dispute on music rights. He stayed with a friend who lived in Baker Street so that experience, in a low part of his life, was the inspiration for this masterpiece. At the end, "going home" is of course his return to Scotland.

    Its a masterpiece.
Your reaction, Sarah, is spot on and again you understand the meaning of the song👍❤❤
    It has no lyrical chorus!
It shouldn't work, Raphael Ravenscroft, the saxophonist, didn't like the recording, his sax was off tune , but it sounds so brilliant
Hugh Burns was the guitarist, outstanding, if a little overshadowed
Gerry Rafferty, sadly, died as a result of long term alcohol abuse and some say this is the story, or part of the story of his life, sadly Raphael is no longer with us, but they leave this great legacy
I love "Right Down The Line", its so cool

This song has always been on my list of favorites. Back in the 90's I used to turn this song up loud. I had tall Pioneer speakers and I would rock them out to this song. Its always touched my soul, almost to the point of tears of joy, and I feel totally different when I listen to it. You had me rocking just now, and I'm a retired old lady lol.

I always thought this song could be an indirect nod to Sherlock Holmes, because he was everything Raffrety described in the song lyrics-- Insomniac, opium user ,drinker, womanizer, restless. Often talked to Watson about giving up the detective life and buy a country place, but too much into his work to ever leave. Last but not least, He and Watson lived at 123 Baker street. Love the sax playing and guitar on this huge no 1 hit!! Happy 4th of July, Sarah!

Not for a long time has there been such an emotive and powerful piece of modern popular music written... This turned the music scene on it's head back in 1978 when it was released... The royalties from Baker Street still earn Gerry's daughter around £75k a year.... A truly iconic piece of music.... I bought most of Gerry's albums, and all were musical gems in their own right.

Watching you made me cry. The 70's was a great time to grow up, people sometimes wonder why our age group is cynical about the world today, perhaps it's just disappointment, the music was amazing, (the quality of sound was better with vinyl too.)

I heard a BBC interview were Baker Street was being discussed.
They talked about after the Sax part was first played back the producer asked the Sax player to put down another take.
The story is the Sax player refused to do so. He packed up his instrument and told them it would be impossible to get it any better.
