- RJ Scaringe has just posted announcing a partnership between Rivian and Volkswagen!! VW will be investing $1B upfront, and potentially $4B more, as well as adopting some of Rivian's software. Rivian stock is soaring on this news (up more than 30% after hours). While it is great they got more cash, I'm skeptical if this changes much. The real questions are can Rivian deliver a $45K R2 Vehicle profitably? And how can they compete with Tesla's FSD on Autonomy?? Let me know what you think in the comments below.

How is the $1 bill convertible note with VW any different than the $3.2 bill of convertibles issued in '23? In both cases, Rivian is taking on debt, interest payments and possible share dilution (if shares move higher). With the $3.2 bill of convertibles issued in '23, the buyers just gets interest along the way. With VW, Rivian not only has to pay interest,
but Rivian also gives up its intellectural property. In summary, if the earlier convertibles were a bad idea, than this current round of convertibles with VW is also bad
VW will probably convert it to equity in December plus they may put in another $4 Billion afterwards. If I was VW I wouldn't invest in Rivan. Seems risky. I would sooner invest in Chinese automakers

No disrespect but you don’t know what your talking about. I thought you were going to lean into this partnership by suggesting the underpinning of VW new electric outdoor suv brand SCOUT but you suggest an electric VW van that’s already been out? This partnership is about Scout and software. If they can align on that this and have another high margin profit center like software this will be a great partnership. If they don’t Rivian dies. That’s it.
I can not imagine "most people" opting to take taxis rather than own a car. Especially anywhere rural, and that is most of the country by far.

Most of the US by land mass not by population. Even more so with Europe. You do realize the US only accounts for 20% of global auto sales.
@@ReinReads I know that Europe has a pretty good rail network as well. Do you think many of them would opt for taxis over a train or a personal vehicle?
I can only speak as an American, but I can tell you that taking taxis everywhere would suck. I love the freedom that my car provides me, the ability to drive long or short distances at a whim and not have to wait for a taxi and not have to pony up a fee every time. Then there are the people who like having cargo capacity or don't feel safe in smaller vehicles.
I also notice it's coastal elites in America who dream of taxis taking over, people who live in crowded urban environments and probably don't do a lot of driving themselves for that or other reasons. I also wonder if they would even want to rely on them personally or just imagine that other people really want taxis for some reason.

Good news for rivian, and a desperate move for VW, imo. Been going back and forth with my wife about whether we get a cybertruck or R1S. Both are capable of towing an L1, so thats why theyre being considered. I'd prefer a CT, as it has better tech across the board-- Better air suspension, more power outlets, steer by wire and on and on. And yet...the fact that the CT is worse than the Model Y for car camping is a huge letdown. And the R1S is a huge upgrade over the Model Y for car camping because of that large SUV shape and layout. If tesla could roll out the Cybervan sooner rather than later, that would truly be the best.
VW alread brought back the classic van from the 60's. The new Electric version is called the "ID Buzz"
VW sold the Transporter all the time. Last version is called T8 I think. The ID Buzz ist just a bigger chassis on MEB platform.
The Rivian-VW partnership has so many potential upsides you couldn't even list them all here. Yes, Rivian is bleeding cash each quarter but they are cutting costs. Access to the VW parts bin would drastically sink Rivian's development costs. The Rivian-VW bus you mentioned would be a killer product for the US. They should cancel the boring ID Buzz and bring this instead.

It has potential but it has to be more of a partnership. I don’t know the details between Rivian and Amazon but VW should buy Rivian. VW needs Rivian for their products and integrate their product throughout the VM line from a ID3 to a R1T /R1S and Rivian needs VW to expand to new markets and to scale from a manufacturing point of view. If Rivian can solve FSD then they could compete overall. These are big IF’s however it would be good to see more competition for Tesla. Also VW has a partnership with JAC in China so if they partner for a Chinese market with this company and partner with Rivian for the US market it simply won’t work. Disruption is at a global scale.

This is great news and could be the shot in the arm that Rivian so badly needs. Still, VW is bureaucratic to an extreme and has a well-known toxic corporate culture. Hopefully Rivian will not be badly affected by this and continue to grow.

VW are in a very precarious position themselves. There next attempts at EV manufacturing is based on buying in Chinese technology for VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat with Rimac providing battery, power train and software for Porsche. Check out how much VW group are borrowing!?
The indebtedness of the VW Group is vastly exaggerated. It looks bad but that's because you don't understand the business. A lot of the money is linked to their finance division. They finance customers to buy their cars so yes they owe a lot of money but they are owed a lot of money by their customers. This equally applies to the other German manufacturers.
I will wait until they actually make money and mass produce before buying their stock, like Elon said PRODUCTION IS HELL. They are still loosing $38K/ EV, where are they going to cut before cutting out all the goodies customers want.
If volkswagen take control of rivian with Andreas Mindt as designer, Rivian will be a serious rival to Tesla.
Rivian already has a great design team! R2 and R3 look far better than anything from Tesla. If anything, VW could benefit from Rivian design input.
Don't think this will really mean much especially since it is VW and the Germans are not doing much for the EV revolution from the German point of view because they took away all the EV incentives.

I see no benefit for either company in this partnership. The incompatibilities between these two desperate companies are broad and deep. Adding organizational complexity is the last thing Rivian should do to become profitable. A cash infusion looks positive, but it's an illusion.

Wait, VW wants Rivian's software?? is that not a bankruptcy declaration for VW? Never mind what prospect it is for Rivian, what does that say about VW. I knew VW have been struggling with their software for years but you just fire and hire some guys. Infotainment software is not 4bn dollars hard. I would steal some game developers, they are often not paid a lot. To decide to rely on Rivian, a company that might not be here in 2 years, that's crazy. What am I missing here. This doesn't compute but I'm glad I wasn't short Rivian just now. 19% of float is shorted, that could cause some squeezing as it rises to what the clueless analyst set to 18$ a share. VW Group has made a profit every year for the last 20 except for the year they were fined for dieselgate. That's a solid 20 years of profitability. People that say they are doomed are people that misunderstand the difference between VW the company and VW Group. They made a profit of €21 Billion last year! VW Group isn't some weak company on the verge of bankruptcy.
