I've had my M50 for almost a year and love it. Coming back to this video after several months has been hugely helpful. You explain the stabilization features better than any other TH-camr, most of whom say don't use the digital stabilization. But you have explained the intent of each. Digital IS "enabled" smooths out handheld jitters and bumps when walking, panning etc. "Enhanced" is for when you want a rock steady handheld shot without camera movement. If you try to pan it's trying to to make a moving object stand still and is constantly recalculating what that should be which is why it looks terrible. This one video has upped my game significantly (and helped me get full value out of the camera. Thank you. Now if someone can explain how the 4k works... It uses less of the image on the sensor, yet gets more pixels of resolution and then you can zoom in still further in post and get 1080p image quality.
I know it is a little bit irrelevant, but I have been browsing tons of M50 reviews etc and I just wanted to say that this is literally one of the first reviews where the person's way of speaking about this subject was so enjoyable. I know it is mainly about "subject" but the way you explain is really peaceful and easily understandable without excess bs. Thank you :)
You do an excellent job at explaining everything in detail. A great speaking voice. Very friendly and made me feel very comfortable even though I'm new to making videos and don't know what I'm doing. Keep up the good work man!

Yeah, it's super handy! Love the size of it. Can't remember if I replied to your other comment about your 6D Mk II, but I am jealous of being able to have a blurry background like you would with a 16-35 f/2.8. I've been seeing a lot of people struggling to get the focus to be smooth on the 6D - I'm assuming that's because of the ultrasonic motors in most of the good Canon glass, but how has it been for you?

Monitor audio input level while recording by downloading the camera app on another device (phone/laptop) the app also allows you to adjust focus as well as other things. I dont know if it's a canon app or what. I seen it done in another video

Hey Justin - just curious if you had to get a mount adapter for the sigma lens to fit on the canon EF-M mount. I’m interested in the set up you have, but noticed the sigma mount says “EF” - have you had any issues? Would love your insight (eg any autofocus issues with the sigma lens etc) and you totally inspired me to max out the potential of my m50. Thanks! 🙏🏻
The Canon EF-M to EF adapter works GREAT with the Sigma (provided its the EF mount). Autofocus worked great and it was quiet if you used an external mic.
dude, when you say you change the picture profile, it would help if you could show how to get there, I've been fidling with the menu for 30 minutes and cannot find it :(
Search for “Customizing Picture Styles” in the manual and it should bring you to the right spot! They might not show it to you if you’re in an Auto or P mode because it’s a bit more advanced.
Hi, I'm interested in buying this camera so I can start making some films. What mic do you have on the camera or what mic would you recommend purchasing to go along with the camera? Also would you recommend any particular stand/tripod? Thank you.
I think starting with the Rode VideoMicro is the easiest way to get started! You can upgrade to the Rode VideoMic Pro+ and it will be a little quieter but I made a ton of videos with just the Micro. The camera isn't very heavy so you can almost use any tripod you want, but the more you spend, the more stable it'll be.
thanks for the time you put into this. one question: you seem to be the first guy to realize that it has clean HDMI out. two requests: could you see if it streams audio as well as video? If I am going to use it to livestream I would think that is important. Also, you might show us how to livestream with it. There are no other vids I can find on this with this model. Thanks!
About to go out and film documentary talking-head interviews and I'm probably going to use this camera because I will mostly be traveling solo and I need something light and decent. So thanks for this video! Very insightful! :)
Awesome, video. Definitely like how go over everything. Some people take themselves a little to serious when they talk about cameras. Gets annoying. Thanks for the video. I’m loving my M50. I’ll be subscribing, friend. Take care.
Yeah, that was a huge help! Coming from Panasonic and Sony I always turned the sharpness all down... I almost sold this camera; I shot a video today, and it looks great!
Do you know why my m50 is only showing the 4 “movie rec. size: 4K 25.00 FHD25.00 FHD50.00 HD50.00 And not the 5 more detailed, you showed us in the video? My camera was in “movie manual” mode BTW.
Yours is set to PAL video (which is UK and other eastern countries) mode instead of NTSC (which is North American). PAL is 25/50fps. NTSC is 24/30/60fps. Google PAL vs NTSC. You might be able to switch it.
You probably know this but in a recent video by Cody Warner he showed that the little divots on the rode mic can hold the mic cord so that it isn't constantly bouncing... I didn't until he showed me but I kept noticing it during your video so figured I would say something.
I cannot wait to see what Canon will bring in its full frame ML cameras. I love my 5D4 but if I can do my vids with something lighter and better codec I would be really happy. The crop on the 5D4's 4K video doesnt bother me since I have a Tamron 15-30 that it does great but the massive used of memory on 4K is the killer.
Good video Justin - hey do you no if there is a setting to slow down the dual pixel focus while racking between subject matter when filming - it would be nice to slow it down a bit.
Nice video! You won't hear this complaint alot. But my biggest complaint with the M50 is there is no choice of smaller video sizes (for a given resolution). Compression is not linear in quality vs size. You can recompress the 30Mbps 1080/24 files from the m50 to half or a third of that size (like with handbrake) and it's very hard to tell any difference. For my purposes (and probably some more people). I'd choose 10 or 15 Mbps, not 30. Not having to recompress in post is a big advantage to me. And having such an option in 4k would mean we could use slower SD cards too. And of course get twice the time. Some canon's have a choice, a little bit, of video compression, but not the M50. H.265 would prolly be great too. But simply not having choices in the h.264 is less 'forgivable' IMO, since H.265 is sorta new. (?) I think there needs to be more discussion of video compression in general when discussing cams. We act like it doesn't matter, like media card speeds, capacities, computing, etc are all unlimited. Before I bought my M50 I watched TONS and TONS of videos on YT about the M50 and others. NOBODY discussed video compression choice issues. If it had been brought to may attention, I may not have chosen the M50. It's currently so bad the way this topic is ignored on YT, it's like you're not cool if you care about filesize. It's really just an issue in our attitude. Many of us would actually be very unhappy if we could only shoot in RAW, contrary it also being good to have that choice. But somehow we are ok with having no choice in compression bitrate?
I think storage is too cheap now that no one needs to talk about it at this level. At 64GB card is less than $50 and will hold hours of footage at 1080p. An 8TB hard drive is like $150. It used to take days to render down a video but now it’s minutes. And the larger the file size, typically the more flexibility you have to colour and work with it in post. And it’s a cheap camera for a video camera so they’re just picking a happy medium and going with it. Something like an 80D has more options but more options also make it more confusing and easier for a novice to screw it up.
@@JustinReves Thanks I appreciate what you're saying. We wouldn't want to lose the higher option. But i still disagree. A novice would not screw up by selecting 15 Mbps. That's still really good. You have to go way way down to really screw up bad, like 1mbps or lower. Your argument that storage is cheap etc well it's not really an argument. It's like I said, if they only offered RAW that would be an even bigger problem. Quite a few of us may have no desire to grade etc, at least not the bulk of what we might shoot. I get that's it's a lower priced camera, but I don't agree that means it should come with no compression settings. We have multiple choices for Jpeg stills, which ironically is less helpful than video compression, because that's more likely to be where it will make a big difference in storage size/speed, sharing straight from camera. The SD card I already had when I got the M50 won't record 4k, but it would if I had a choice of smaller compression. I noticed the sony A6400 vs the Canon M6 mkII, those both have some compression settings, though still not quite full coverage of choices, I think one of them is better for 4k in that regard, one better at 1080. Nobody pointed out to me the m50 had none, when I watched countless comparisons of those cameras with the m50. Yes I could have looked it up, but it didn't occur to me. It was the 'one' thing I missed. Ok so I'm cranky, but upon careful consideration I still think this is more than important enough to cover when reporting about cameras.
Great job on the B-Roll...Killer!!! What lens, camera settings and fps did you use for the concert footage? Was the camera hand held? It looks excellent and I know that is one of the toughest environments to properly film in. The colors and focus clarity look outstanding!!!
Will the footage in the Canon M50 match exactly with the Canon M6? I currently have a Canon M6 and am considering getting a second camera for B-roll footage and a 2nd angle. Is it worth getting the M50? Or will it be too much of a hassle to match the color grade of the M6?
I've got a Canon 70D and I'd like to buy the Canon M50, but I'd also like to buy the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 lens. I can only afford one. Which one should I get first?
How long will the M50 record 1080p video? I'm a bit concerned that it might be a bit short. I've heard this " Continuous recording will stop after 29 minutes and 59 seconds or when a single HD 100p recording reaches seven minutes and 29 seconds. New files will be created after recording stops if the user holds down the recording button." from here: www.photoreview.com.au/reviews/advanced-compact-cameras/interchangeable-lens/canon-eos-m50/
hi justin, do you have a video on how the preamps are on the m50? is it noisy or much better /comparable to other high ends cameras? i'm thinking about getting the videomicro to go with that. also was asking you on the vlog you did with greg to see what you used as a mic. thank you in advance.
It’s more about technique than anything but a $600 camera is not going to look like as good - but you could probably get 80-90% of the way there. It’s incredible for the price.
Hey there, enjoyed your video. Just bought the Canon M50 and have plugged a lavalier mic into it. Also tried a Movo mic. No sound is recorded. Unplug the mic and I have sound. What's up?
@@JustinReves Here comes my confession. Found out that it matters which end of the Movo mic cord is plugged into the camera and or the microphone, despite the fact that they are both TRRS ends. Little detail that means a lot.
How are 3rd party lenses with dual pixel auto-focus? Nice video, a lot of interesting little adjustments to make using it more efficient. I still need to get into my SL2's settings. Haven't even touched the custom menu yet, lol.
Hey Justin!! Nice videos!!! But I still split between getting a SL2 vs M50!! Can you get the audio levels display on the SL2? Can you charge the SL2 by usb? And last but not least can you customize buttons like you do on the M50? Thanks!! Keep uploading!!
I can't remember if you can see audio but I'd assume no. can't charge via usb. don't think you get the same customization options for buttons but you do get some! check out Kinotika - they made a comparison video!
Awesome video, 1 year late, but still took the m50. Thanks to your guide, i was able to get the most out of my puny little m50! Played with it a while, till i got my speedbooster, and it opened up a whole new level on this little monster!
Hey Justin! Thank you for making this video! So relevant.. All the videos on my channel were shot on an M50. I enjoyed you sharing how you'd get closer to a log setting on the M50. Subscribed!
Seeing the abilities of the M50 and the slightly more expensive 70D makes me slightly regret the investment I have in the G7 simply because of the rock solid Dual Pixel Autofocus :(
I mean, the G7 is almost 3 years old now. Still WILD what it can do for such a cheap camera that is that old, but that's the problem with tech...changes so fast!
You honestly have to get a manual focus lens because there's just not good options yet for crop-sensor Canons. The Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 is close, but it doesn't autofocus so well. Can't wait until Sigma makes their 16mm f/1.4 work for Canon.
1080p/60fps is good for sports because you can do slow motion easily and it looks smooth. Requires more light. If you’re doing workout videos, probably just 1080p/30fps.
Hi Justin! How come you have (5) movie recording sizes while my M50 only has 4 of it. Please shoot me on how to have that settings or whatever that is. Thank you!
Hi i want to ask a question about the microphone. I buy a rode videomic go but it's have an problem. WiFi signals make an hissing sound in deep at record. I guess i am gonna buy videomicro. Did you saw an problem at the videomicro and are you happy to use videomicro. If you can help me i will be so happy.

Thanks!! All shot handheld with the Sigma 18-35mm at f/1.8, 24fps, 1/50th, and whatever the ISO needed to be.
Will the footage in the Canon M50 match exactly with the Canon M6? I currently have a Canon M6 and am considering getting a second camera for B-roll footage and a 2nd angle. Is it worth getting the M50? Or will it be too much of a hassle to match the color grade of the M6?
is focusing good in low light?. Also does this camera shoot high quality images. Is taking pictures with this camera better then the nikon d7200?
I've got a Canon 70D and I'd like to buy the Canon M50, but I'd also like to buy the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 lens. I can only afford one. Which one should I get first?
The Sigma 18-35. It will make WAAAAAYYYY more of a difference than the M50.
I need to use these !! Thanks for your help ;)
Awesome! You’re most welcome.
Yeah, you get a half hour straight and then it pauses.
@@JustinReves That sounds less than ideal. I presume the only thing you can do is restart it, and stitch the videos together in post.
Have you had any issues with hooking up an external mic and hearing a lot of radio frequency interference?
Great vid. I'm a noob and the m50 that I just got is my first
You make such great Videos Man. This is Amazing!!!!!
Appreciate that Jesse!
whatd you film this video on in studio
hi justin, do you have a video on how the preamps are on the m50? is it noisy or much better /comparable to other high ends cameras? i'm thinking about getting the videomicro to go with that. also was asking you on the vlog you did with greg to see what you used as a mic. thank you in advance.
Hey! I think the preamps are fine. Use it with a VideoMicro and it’s pretty good. I guess if you think that’s good enough - that’s what we use!
At 7:48 it says 4k30, All-I. I didn't know this shot All-I. Is it greyed out or available?
THANKS for the valuable info, just got my M50 and love it. Liked and subbed....
Awesome!! It's such a great little camera. Just works.
Got the Canon m50 several months back. Can I shoot a full movie with it and get it to look authentic like big budget films?
It’s more about technique than anything but a $600 camera is not going to look like as good - but you could probably get 80-90% of the way there. It’s incredible for the price.
If I use the Picture Profile you recommend, which LUT style should I use? Log or Rec 709?
Hey there, enjoyed your video. Just bought the Canon M50 and have plugged a lavalier mic into it. Also tried a Movo mic. No sound is recorded. Unplug the mic and I have sound. What's up?
Could be those mics aren’t compatible with cameras OR if they work on other cameras, then maybe somethings up with the mic port.
@@JustinReves Here comes my confession. Found out that it matters which end of the Movo mic cord is plugged into the camera and or the microphone, despite the fact that they are both TRRS ends. Little detail that means a lot.
Thanks for the great tips on m50
Would you recommend the 18 to 35 lens for a second lens? I have the 22 for the m50
Great video! Do you still recommend this camera? (I am starting a YT channel (vlogging))
Absolutely!
How are 3rd party lenses with dual pixel auto-focus? Nice video, a lot of interesting little adjustments to make using it more efficient. I still need to get into my SL2's settings. Haven't even touched the custom menu yet, lol.
My Sigma 18-35 works GREAT.
I think m50 is better than sl3 for video . Thanks gor your great advice bro..🙏🙏
Zagalo which camera did you end up buying the sl2 or m50?
what would be the best lens for film and sports film thanks
Great video! Thank you. What tripod are you using?
Awesome video, 1 year late, but still took the m50. Thanks to your guide, i was able to get the most out of my puny little m50! Played with it a while, till i got my speedbooster, and it opened up a whole new level on this little monster!
Hey Justin! Thank you for making this video! So relevant.. All the videos on my channel were shot on an M50. I enjoyed you sharing how you'd get closer to a log setting on the M50. Subscribed!
Super thankful for the vid. I wouldn't have changed those settings if I didn't see that you can here haha
What did you set for fitness and threshold in the first picture style
Thank you Justin i couldnt make up my mind between the Canon EOS T7i and the M50. This video has settled me on the M50.
Yeah, it's definitely what I'd pick!
I dont recall what video sold me on the M50, but this one sold me on the lenses.
Stellar work. I love your style. 👍👍
Thanks Joshua!
Video images are great, what were taken in 4k or 1080? I suppose you used sigma 18-35. Thank you
Hey! Great videos! I am trying to dial in my settings on my m50 but I am having issues with the black in my videos having noise or artifacts any tips?
Does the M50 allow you to pause during recording so that you dont have to stitch individual files together ?
No
Seeing the abilities of the M50 and the slightly more expensive 70D makes me slightly regret the investment I have in the G7 simply because of the rock solid Dual Pixel Autofocus :(
I mean, the G7 is almost 3 years old now. Still WILD what it can do for such a cheap camera that is that old, but that's the problem with tech...changes so fast!
I don't have the 60fps in it, can you tell me why?
Do you have 50fps? If so, then you've got a PAL setup which is 24/25/50 instead of north american NTSC which is 24/30/60.
@@JustinReves Yea its 50fps
Is there a way to get a softer look on the skin? My videos show every tiny blemish and it looks awful.
Any recommendation for a lens for this camera that provides that widescreen blurry background look?
You honestly have to get a manual focus lens because there's just not good options yet for crop-sensor Canons. The Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 is close, but it doesn't autofocus so well. Can't wait until Sigma makes their 16mm f/1.4 work for Canon.
what’s the best settings if i wanna record workout videos/ maybe sports?
1080p/60fps is good for sports because you can do slow motion easily and it looks smooth. Requires more light. If you’re doing workout videos, probably just 1080p/30fps.
Hi Justin! How come you have (5) movie recording sizes while my M50 only has 4 of it. Please shoot me on how to have that settings or whatever that is. Thank you!
Dannica, are you in North America? What are your 4 settings?
Great review 👌🏼
Thank you!
Hi i want to ask a question about the microphone. I buy a rode videomic go but it's have an problem. WiFi signals make an hissing sound in deep at record. I guess i am gonna buy videomicro.
