Why do people get depressed? - Rabbi Dr Akiva Tatz | Jewish Wisdom | J-TV

  • Rabbi Dr Akiva Tatz discusses with Ollie what he believes to be the underlying cause of depression in so many cases. He argues that happiness is felt when one feels as if he or she is heading in a direction that they should be going in, and depression is felt when there is a sense as if one is no longer on a meaningful path. I was diagnosed with chronic depression in 2014 (as a result of chemical imbalances in my brain). I've been on medication ever since and it does help indeed. However, doing something productive is extremely difficult. Finding the motivation is not easy. But I agree that keeping busy does really help. Even if it is setting one goal for the day (for example walking around the block) that would be enough.

      Blessings Brother, At age 69, mine has been a life of depression however the Rabbi's revelation has been a Hallelujah moment for me! You are on the right track, I have found the book of Psalms to be also very meaningful.

      Thank you for sharing, if you don't mind me asking, how is brain chemical imbalance determined? Is there a type or types of tests given? I don't ask this to be snarky, I am asking bc I am wondering if I could have use of the tests myself. Thank you!

    I have so much admiration for Rabbi Akiva Tatz. His mind is just so utterly sharp. He's just abundant with knowledge. Such an inspiring man. He also comes across as a no nonsense person, which I find very refreshing.

      I have the same experience with depression and lack of loving relationships. Some days have been very hard for me, but I always have a desire to bounce back and think that there is a reason why I am still breathing. Today is a good day, again I have created a goal that I choose to move forward in and feeling more hopeful as the days go by. Will this feeling last, probably not. But that is ok, because as long as I am breathing I have another chance for hope. Some times for me to feel better I choose one very small goal to focus on.....like keeping my kitchen super clean for a day, a week, a month, etc. Then other things come to mind. You are still here for a reason. Sometimes having a fixation on having great relationships can't be our top priority. You need to be your own top priority centered around God's love for you. Go and be blessed.

      I travelled to many places across the globe for a long time, things i find common with all happy people is being satisfied with little, having good connections with others (real life only), living as primitive and natural as possible (i.e walking around barefoot is IMP) and some form of meditation or prayer.
      GOOD luck and wish you a long and prosperous life.

      Hannah, not sure what will work for you. What works for me is over 30 years of taking 40 mg's of Prozac and when the Amchenover rebbi told me: "Do gemilus chassidim b'goof." Meaning, do good deeds as opposed to giving charity etc. I got a degree in special ed, specialized in autism, began working out (seriously) and helping children (reaching those unreachable stars) and it's still working...

    I think depression also comes from not living a life in God. You can keep busy with whatever but If you are not in God's will it means nothing.

    I laughed when he said collecting art is pointless, "unless for an investment". Such a Jewish thing to say, ironic in the context of the whole conversation which is supposed to give life a meaning, yet he focuses on money.

    • @Historian212
      @Historian212 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      What are you talking about? Lots of people invest in art. He was using collecting art for its own sake as one of many ways that people put time and effort into things they think will be meaningful, yet are empty. Then he qualified that, because investing in something in order to provide for your family, give to charity (a very Jewish thing to do), and so on, is not meaningless. He didn't focus on money; he qualified a blanket statement to clarify it. Try reaching beyond the obvious stereotypes.

    • @frenchfries9258
      @frenchfries9258 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you missed the point, he was absolutely right, collecting art as a meaningful pursuit in life won’t bring fulfilment and a sense of achievement, but is a worthwhile endeavour if your purpose is to build or store wealth. Two different things.

    It sound like he lives in a bubble of logic, no real experience with people who tell the truth as to why they are depressed. He did not mention a person having unrealistic goals,bad diet,or many things real people go through. He did philosophically, make good points though.

    • @tcl5853
      @tcl5853 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dion Williams : He completely answered those issues... he said a depression, at bottom , is a result of living a life in pursuit of meaningless activity. It doesn’t matter what may be bringing a person into a depression, the way out is to engage live in meaningful pursuits. You didn’t deny that certain medical interventions could be necessary depending on chemical in balances or injuries. But living a life that is engaged in meaningful activity, activity that actually enriches a person psychologically and spiritually apparently has profound effect on the human brain. And he made a very clear distinction between collecting beer cans or modern Art just for the sake of collecting it and doing something worthwhile that actually benefits the human condition.

    • @Historian212
      @Historian212 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He could not have mentioned every example in a short video. But he did make categorical statements into which many examples apply. Since he's a medical doctor and a rabbi, I suspect he has dealt with many people who suffer from depression.
