I'm a Christian who is struggling with this exact concept right now. "The more intelligent you are, the more depressed you're gonna be. Because if you're really smart, and you don't see a purpose, it's very painful." That shook me. But what really made a wave of dread come over me was what you said right after that. I hate living like this. I absorb absurd amounts of information every day, I do so much more research on common items than my peers that makes it impossible to hold meaningful and purposeful conversations with them, and I feel like a prisoner in a society that alleges to encourage learning. It's given me anxiety, depression, and at this point, I don't even get existential crises anymore because I've thought nonstop for so many years about the endless void we all live in. I've come to the point where all I feel is sadness thinking about it, because I know humans will never be able to explore it all. We look up at it and fill our textbooks with pages upon pages about how everything works from afar, only to sit on a futon at the end of the day being limited to exploring what's left in your fridge. I feel sadness knowing places I'll never get to see. I feel anxious all the time thinking of the growing state of unrest in the U.S. and the abounding ignorance of so many who don't see it. I have read so many articles.. gone down every rabbit hole.. sifted all the information into true and false, and even then it's enough to terrify me, or anyone for that matter. I've said to myself many times that if I could, I would without a doubt go back to 2016 when I was at my best, and would from that point on just avoid trying to understand the things that confuse me. My curiosity and thirst to know more brought me further than I wanted to go. It's so much easier to live in ignorance than to accept reality, or perceived reality, and I wish I knew less. A couple quotes I think really hit it home. "The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far." ~Unknown "Knowledge is power in the hands of the strong, but a prison for the mind of the weak." ~Me I hope all of you reading this have an amazing life, and I ask that you all pray for me and wish me well with mine... I hope you settle for finding purpose, and stop trying to define the unknown. If, however, you can live with *knowing*, I wish you the best on your journey. But as a word of warning.. You can always learn something new. What you can't do is forget. Like a snowball rolling down a hill.. The more you expand your knowledge, the more the whole of it all begins to form. That is when the horror starts.
I read your cry. It is a gift to perceive into the deep & “yes”... you may weep. I can identify with your expressions & think of Solomon’s words in Ecclesiastes 12:12 ...of making many books there is no end & much study is weariness of the flesh. We get glimpses of where his energy went & conclusion about the fear of God...keep His Commandments. This being the duty of man. In knowing comes vanity & pride. In knowing comes awareness of the vastness of more. When every nano plus particle is categorized & TM’s put on discoveries, would men be satisfied? I like Rabbi’s stark resemblance to a Gnome-Wizard as it touches my heart in a endearing way. Laughter arises in God & is shared with us as in all emotions. Rabbi’s talk spurred me to incubate-reflect-meditate. We weigh & measure our actions & reactions. The thought that we are for God’s pleasure touches me & that is the spark that grew bigger as I listen to Rabbi Friedman. 🙏 to him for sharing from the well. Nothing goes to waste in Gods economy. The things you’ve learned & earned are seeds planted in the soil in which in agony you toil & won’t spoil. I have found rest in crying out to God. I am better off with Him in the darkness than without Him in the Light. Vanity-profanity like all other words become real and we in our zeal reveal who were are as we live each moment. I say that God is my Refuge, my Shield , and my Sanity. I would drown in the ocean of ways to say, to see, to be and never be free without Him.
And then you realize the Torah is very simple in its essence, for us to understand it intuitively, and how it easily defines good actions. And then you are told that indeed good actions as well are like that snowball that does eventually result in an avalanche, just like the casscade of thoughts. Someone do quote the part about turning the wisdom of the wise into foolishness and vice versa, pretty please. And do pardon me if its deliberate, but intelligence is a feeling.
That is very encouraging! At no secular school or university does one find such knowledge - it is divine knowledge that teaches about life and brings life. Awesome!
in secular schools this is reserved for the colleges and people who take philosophy classes. MAYBE, because in those classes they mostly just teach about history of philosophy. the ''common rabble'' is comletely left out in secular society.
I am not technically Jewish because my Jewish grandfather married a non Jewish woman. But I am an Australian Christian with Jewish Ancestors which makes me a child of Abraham of a fact that I am very proud of and Rabbi Manis Friedman is the most inspiring person I have ever listened to
What I learned : The mind must rule. The body does not have to tell the mind that it is "ill," that would be an interference of the mind. Rather, the mind has to tell the body what its purpose is. That does not mean pushing the body to something, no. it means that the mind hears what the body has to say, and decides with intellect what to do.
Honesty is an opportunity to connect in godly ways if one so chooses. To prey on another in their vulnerability is in the end a way in which doing so, one loses. We are like mirrors to each other. Whats the main cause of depression and problems in guys?- Wasting seed. How to be a Righteous Noahide? 1. Have to comply with the 7 Noahide Laws, read Tanakh with Rashi´s commentary and study Mussar, which is character refinement and ethical laws applicable to all mankind. 2. There's some really deep thought in that. The non religious philosophical style discussions are very interesting. Spoken in an open way like that it allows the ears to hear. I agree too that intelligent minds without purpose are easily depressed. That our emotions are a part of us.. though still learning to have self control and knowing when to use them and when to walk away to release them alone or in a safe environment is very important. It takes a real understanding of another person to have the freedom to be able to release emotion and know it's not going to be taken personally.. or the wrong way. Even excitedability with someone who doesn't understand can be hard to handle especially if they themselves are easily affected by emotions. I was called the ice queen once or told I'm cold hearted.. in actual fact I'm not. I just don't like people getting too close to my heart. So that's what I found mind boggling with the lack of understanding with medical professionals.. because emotional distancing is something most people do every day. Yet when assessing a person they'll place it down as some kind of personality disorder, mind you while they themselves are emotionally distancing to give a clinical opinion. Then can't see why that sort of thing is so hypocritical. I just wanted to see some balance and reality returned especially to those who are in positions that can affect another persons life dramatically.

Very insightful and well spoken, a "purposeless life" is definitely a deeply rooted fear for this man and a lot of people. Neural networking is an extremely interesting science explaining how each individual's mental state is made up of a network of brain tissue like urban highways.. in that once you've developed this network, it's extremely hard and in most cases impossible to remap. You can make side streets and alleys in between the highways to make sense of newly discovered ideas, but this rabbi's ultimate fear of the lack of purpose in life (based on this interview) equates to an interstate unchangeable 10 lane highway in his brain. I understand his point of view, in that it's impossible to know a "truth" as to the meaning of life, and that if we have to choose, that choosing a purposeful answer to life as opposed to a purposeless happenstance answer is a more comforting choice.. but it just still feels like more is missing in this "answer" to what I believe to be an unanswerable question.. and that anyone's answer will be completely individualized and completely based on the highways of neural nets they've forged in their brains. Everyone is different, vastly different from one person to the next, and especially from one community to the next. I would like to think that more people should be inclined to chose that there is no answer in this age of information and shared intelligence, where almost anyone can see that there are so many different views on this subject.. and that there is no purpose to the atoms that I and the rest of the universe are made of, despite so many attempts at finding an answer. I'm comfortable with that, and to be clear I'm all for preaching what makes you comfortable, but I do feel like it should be said in these types of lectures, that the brain is an amazingly complex thing.. and that what makes you comfortable, is likely completely unique to you based on your individual neural network, and that this is merely an interesting conversation about philosophy, and to try as hard as you can to find your own truth even if that truth is that there is no answer, and that that's okay.

However, you might be unaware that the rabbi seems to be pretending that he "does" know. Because even yourself said, "Whatever created the universe didn't "want" to be understood". How do you know that some conscious "thing" created the universe, as opposed to natural processes? Also, how did you rule out an eternal universe? Also, if you truly have no idea, why do you believe a god exists in the first place? Why not just say, "I don't know if any god exists or not"?

I'm glad that you stated that our purpose is to bring God down to earth. It's a great starting point to finding truth and purpose in our lives.....but there's a problem. What happens if someone feels their purpose is to do something that hurts me - or hurts you? What if they have a burning devotion to their purpose, like Apostle Paul did when he persecuted Christians, but later found out to his horror that he was wrong?! Radical Muslims will tell you that their purpose is to convert the world to Islam. What if you and I disagree? That's why finding the true purpose in our lives is essential; we can't always trust our own purposes because they may be wrong........

by not letting your circumstances define you. You define what your own circumstances are and have the power to change them. If you don't have what you need there then move, it's that simple. "But my family is here, but there's no work, but I don't have money" those are problems only in your head. Change what you need to. I would say that the purpose of life is just to survive, to observe, to feel emotions (if you can), to learn things about the world, to have new experiences, to exist on this plain of existence and to explore it. NO , he was wrong and did wrong, however what or who dictates that the right purpose is to bring god to earth ? if he is so smart and thats his purpose he would find the way , or is the purpose stated in a religious book that was written by humans who believed that was the correct purpose but would have been very well wrong with it all? my conclusions , an intelligent mind can think or believe that has found or is even on the right path to fulfilling their purpose and very well be wrong at the end .... then who do we blaim? and better yet based on what can we say that their are right or wrong? if your answer is based on meanings of words , or what any book may say your answer will be wrong , you say we cant make up our own purpose .... Why? Says who? Based on what? God, the beauty of all things might be very deferent for every human and the only one that can dictate whether thats the right thing is god him self, And if in order to do that we need to go back to any scripture we are going into the minds of the one who wrote it and none of them was written by god him self , and whatever else said by whoever wrote could be just a misinterpretation.
Th very fact that there exists the possibility for people to live with a purpose yet without beliving in "bringing god down to earth" suggests in my opinion that seeing purpose in god is not really necessary. Furthermore, purpose can very well be found in other stuff, like family and such. so I don't know how not believing in intelligent design necessarily means that one has to not see any purpose in the universe. purpose is after all a human concept and depends on our ability to experience it. claiming that every cell "has a purpose" is very nice to hear allegoricaly, but in truth, this claim itself is maid by a human, for the purpose of producing reaction and and mental stimulation in other humans. do animals experience purpose? do plants? cells? what really IS this purpose he's talking about? people need purpose, I'm not denying that. I just don't agree with him as to the nature of that purpose and how it comes about. one should always has to be careful not to get carried away by these allegories.
Tamir Behar God is the foundation of the universe with very deep concept and purpose. While on the other hand human is limited by his knowledge while God is the infinite wisdom. What I learned : The mind must rule. The body does not have to tell the mind that it is "ill," that would be an interference of the mind. Rather, the mind has to tell the body what its purpose is. That does not mean pushing the body to something, no. it means that the mind hears what the body has to say, and decides with intellect what to do.

There's some really deep thought in that. The non religious philosophical style discussions are very interesting. Spoken in an open way like that it allows the ears to hear. I agree too that intelligent minds without purpose are easily depressed. That our emotions are a part of us.. though still learning to have self control and knowing when to use them and when to walk away to release them alone or in a safe environment is very important. It takes a real understanding of another person to have the freedom to be able to release emotion and know it's not going to be taken personally.. or the wrong way. Even excitedability with someone who doesn't understand can be hard to handle especially if they themselves are easily affected by emotions. I was called the ice queen once or told I'm cold hearted.. in actual fact I'm not. I just don't like people getting too close to my heart. So that's what I found mind boggling with the lack of understanding with medical professionals.. because emotional distancing is something most people do every day. Yet when assessing a person they'll place it down as some kind of personality disorder, mind you while they themselves are emotionally distancing to give a clinical opinion. Then can't see why that sort of thing is so hypocritical. I just wanted to see some balance and reality returned especially to those who are in positions that can affect another persons life dramatically.

Very insightful and well spoken, a "purposeless life" is definitely a deeply rooted fear for this man and a lot of people. Neural networking is an extremely interesting science explaining how each individual's mental state is made up of a network of brain tissue like urban highways.. in that once you've developed this network, it's extremely hard and in most cases impossible to remap. You can make side streets and alleys in between the highways to make sense of newly discovered ideas, but this rabbi's ultimate fear of the lack of purpose in life (based on this interview) equates to an interstate unchangeable 10 lane highway in his brain. I understand his point of view, in that it's impossible to know a "truth" as to the meaning of life, and that if we have to choose, that choosing a purposeful answer to life as opposed to a purposeless happenstance answer is a more comforting choice.. but it just still feels like more is missing in this "answer" to what I believe to be an unanswerable question.. and that anyone's answer will be completely individualized and completely based on the highways of neural nets they've forged in their brains. Everyone is different, vastly different from one person to the next, and especially from one community to the next. I would like to think that more people should be inclined to chose that there is no answer in this age of information and shared intelligence, where almost anyone can see that there are so many different views on this subject.. and that there is no purpose to the atoms that I and the rest of the universe are made of, despite so many attempts at finding an answer. I'm comfortable with that, and to be clear I'm all for preaching what makes you comfortable, but I do feel like it should be said in these types of lectures, that the brain is an amazingly complex thing.. and that what makes you comfortable, is likely completely unique to you based on your individual neural network, and that this is merely an interesting conversation about philosophy, and to try as hard as you can to find your own truth even if that truth is that there is no answer, and that that's okay.
The purpose is in God. GOD CREATED EVERYTHING FOR HIS DELIGHT. That is the purpose.

However, you might be unaware that the rabbi seems to be pretending that he "does" know. Because even yourself said, "Whatever created the universe didn't "want" to be understood". How do you know that some conscious "thing" created the universe, as opposed to natural processes? Also, how did you rule out an eternal universe?
Also, if you truly have no idea, why do you believe a god exists in the first place? Why not just say, "I don't know if any god exists or not"?

I'm glad that you stated that our purpose is to bring God down to earth. It's a great starting point to finding truth and purpose in our lives.....but there's a problem. What happens if someone feels their purpose is to do something that hurts me - or hurts you? What if they have a burning devotion to their purpose, like Apostle Paul did when he persecuted Christians, but later found out to his horror that he was wrong?! Radical Muslims will tell you that their purpose is to convert the world to Islam. What if you and I disagree? That's why finding the true purpose in our lives is essential; we can't always trust our own purposes because they may be wrong........

I don't think real scientists would argue that there is no purpose. They're just - at least within their job - agnostic to such questions.
I am really confused with all this. If God who created us knew the purpose for creating us, why dont I know it myself? We should all know our purpose then without any particular person speculating what our purpose is because that is what Rabbis and Pastors do.

Of course, they don't know everything, leaving areas like what happened before the big bang (which is the beginning of the expansion of space itself rather than a simple explosion, like many believe btw.) up for debate, but in general, they have managed to map out the universe to the point, at which everything can be explained through the various physical, chemical and natural processes without anything akin to divine intervention.

As for the whole deal about purpose, my personal opinion on the subject is, that not everything has to have a purpose, much less anything created by God. Purpose is something, that is usually attributed to a tool of some kind, like the car you mentioned at 8:30. Tools are there to allow us to do something, we couldn't do without it, or at least not as efficiently. An omnipotent, omniscient being, such as God, can't gain anything from a tool, as he can already do literally everything without a tool. The only reason, a God would have to create anything would be as something to keep him company, either a toy or something, that's just entertaining to watch. Our free will is what would make us perfectly entertaining to watch, as we choose our own path, our own purpose and it is just interesting to see what we do and where we eventually end up.
As such, nothing has a purpose from the start, instead, that which can will make up its own purpose for its existence and take actions accordingly, perhaps changing the purpose it believes itself to have at some point along the way. Purposelessness does not mean meaninglessness, as every action anything takes is meaningful to something else, regardless of what that action is, including inaction.

A being without purpose is like a force without vector. But this lecture is also disturbing for me in a consequence: What is the purpose of WWII and the victims of the holocaust ? What was the purpose of the germans in history , to show us brutality ? I breath a particle of a notion that the germans are a kind of evil anti - purpose since their history has no positiv personal purpose for any idea of what in farest somehow could be described as a soul. What purpose does murder by bureaucracy have ? This specific purposelessness is the daemon of the german part in the world for some to see the antimatter of life consisting - functionality and obedience. The Germans a the reciprocal value of purpose - a purpose, but beneath the fraction line and if there is no purpose in this term, existence is even not defined. God, the beauty of all things might be very deferent for every human and the only one that can dictate whether thats the right thing is god him self, And if in order to do that we need to go back to any scripture we are going into the minds of the one who wrote it and none of them was written by god him self , and whatever else said by whoever wrote could be just a misinterpretation.
Th very fact that there exists the possibility for people to live with a purpose yet without beliving in "bringing god down to earth" suggests in my opinion that seeing purpose in god is not really necessary.
Furthermore, purpose can very well be found in other stuff, like family and such. so I don't know how not believing in intelligent design necessarily means that one has to not see any purpose in the universe.
