      DERklappstuhl i love NOFX but still this is a song about rejecting society not really protesting it - he separates himself - throughout the song he is asking questions and making statements about society government, religion and about his choices and not asking and imploring change as protest songs usually so. it an observation not a protest... love the song though - so many layers
      Please understand this is why i love punk - it is genrally not pretentious of even trying to be the moral police of society it just tells it like it is wart and all and tells people to fuck of if they dont like it

    I just think it's more powerful than any others on this last and it is definitely one of, if not the most well known song on this list. It's so perfect in the way that it's still so relevant today and is still as applicable as it was in the 60s. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this.

      I agree. Many of the finalists aren't top 10 protest songs, while the Hon. Men.s are definitely up there. Zombie, War Pigs, and a mention of Chicago by CSNY during the Ohio part should have been included, and not f*** the police or some of the other crap ones.

    • @hallorand9
      @hallorand9 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      CPD0123a War pigs and Zombie aren't protest songs about specific things. War pigs = war in -general-. If you haven't noticed, they needed more aim to be protesting for something. how is F*** the police a 'crap one'... It is protesting against a specific thing and meets all the qualifications for this video, unlike the songs you mentioned.

    • @pennyforyourthots
      @pennyforyourthots 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@KateryReminiec9399 that's part of it, but I would argue that a protest on also has to have a call to action.
      Ex. "Do you hear the people sing" is (or at least can be) a protest song because the song is specifically outlining how people will "never be slaves again" and generally teardown unjust authority. It's rather vague in the specifics, which is why it gets used in so many different contexts, from the French Revolution of the original play to the protesters in Hong Kong, but it does outline why people are here to protest and what they seek to achieve.
      As a contrast to this, "this is America" is a political song, pointing out the issues of the United States, but it doesn't actually make a call to action. I would also argue that a key part of protest songs is that they should be able to be sung by groups of people, which you can see theoretically do with rap, but it's much more difficult to harmonize since rap lyrics focus on Rhythm rather than melody or Harmony as part of the style.
