- Beating Pokemon Red & Blue How Nintendo Intended! Red and Blue were the first Pokemon games released in the late 90s and today we are going to go through this old Pokemon Red and Blue strategy guide to see if we can beat Pokemon Blue as Nintendo intended, the Nintendo approved way!

Y'know, out of all the guides. I think this one might be my favourite. Sure other guides were more informative and had stuff like "hammer away" but something about this guide and the way Elizabeth explains stuff feels more.....personal I guess? Can't put my finger on my thoughts exactly, I just really like it.
this one definitely felt like a person was guiding me through the game rather than just random instructions

@@Agumame based on the fact that the FR/LG guide does the same thing of having you battle Misty before nugget bridge and surge before diglett's cave makes me wonder if the FRLG guide guy just took the old guide and updated it for the few changes.

This guide's writing is so good. You feel that the person that wrote it not only played the game, but was also passionate about it. My guess about the weird terminology used here and there (like refering to HM as Hidden Skills and whatnot) may come from the fact that the writer played japanese version first, so she might be using the terminology the way she translated it herself from the original release. Still, it is written in such a way that it is all very clear.
I love how much character the old guides have! It's like watching old 2007 youtube, less professional and all over the place but way more character and charm
I really liked this one. It was kind of spoilery, but the fact that it was written by someone who played the game before it was released in English (I assume) make me appreciate the mistakes more (as they probably knew a little japanese and were translating it themselves) and also feels a lot more genuine.

Fun Fact: calling Koffing the toxic balloon is accurate since some Pokedex entries say it has thin skin and you can see the gases inside if you get close enough.
But I also didn't know it was supposed to be a balloon till a couple months ago, I always thought it was like a shell since it's Defense is so high lol

Seeing Giovanni as the gym leader as a young kid was a shock to me. A good shock, I really enjoyed that he was gym leader because I liked him a lot as a character.
Hidden Abilities didn't exist in this one, let alone, in this age, but the guide was talking about the 5 HMs: Cut, Fly, Surf, Strength and Flash.
Yeah TM is short for Technical Machine, and HM is short for HIDDEN Machines.
Yea when you couldn’t delete HMs and didn’t have infinite TMs. Only one in the game lol

@@2TrainWakefield It was a godsend, especially for those of us trying to play at a higher than casual level. Having to play through the game multiple times to get multiples of one shot TMs, usually something like Earthquake, was fucking awful.
The introduction was very charming. It was cool to hear about pokemon as new

I recently did a Nuzlocke on Red and, while I enjoyed myself, it really brought to life how flawed/useless a lot of pokemon's movesets are in this gen 😅
this is my favorite nintended video yet! i have such a soft spot for this guide. as a kid i was so happy that the guide i had was written by a girl who liked pokemon too, since none of my friends did at the time. and i was totally enraptured by all of the little details she added, like oak's regular delivery boy being sick -- it may seem weird now when we look back on it, and something newer guides would never do, but as a little kid getting obsessed with pokemon it helped me flesh out the world of the game as i played it and develop my own narrative. i want to reread my copy now :') thanks for such a great video!
For the special boost after beating Blaine. I believe every other gym badge gives your Pokemon a permanent stat boost. The fire badge increased the special stat. I know there's others but I don't feel like clicking off the video to look it up
Yeah, up until Gen IV I think, most badges would raise the stats of your Pokemon a little. It isn't a big mechanic and isn't around anymore, so I can see how most people forgot.
If I’m remembering correctly, the Boulder Badge boosts attack, the Thunder Badge boosts speed, and the Soul Badge you get from beating Koga raises defense.
Edit: I’m half-right. These are the stat boosts in FireRed and LeafGreen. In the original games, the Thunder Badge boosts defense and the Soul Badge boosts speed.
Brock's badge gives attack, Surge's gives defense, Koga's gives speed, and Blaine's gives special
And in the gen 1 games, the badge boosts get reapplied every time your pokémon's stats change (except for the stat that just got changed) - so e.g. if you set up six double teams, you get all your badge boosts applied seven times total, boosting all your stats by a factor of 2.28 - but that gets reset once the battle ends or your pokemon levels up.

I had this guide as a kid and they are notorious for the pages coming loose from the spine due to being used that much. So that's why its probably in a folder like this.
Yeah, good chance the guide was only held together by a couple of staple, and would fall apart just from looking at it too hard :D.

Blaine’s badge increasing your special stat is an odd reference to the badge boosts you get from certain badges to each stat. This is also where the badge boost glitch comes from with stat moves.
Ah the nostalgia! As much as the Gen 1 games aren't my favourite Pokemon games, they'll always have a special place in my heart.
They probably must’ve started working on it prior to the English release so had to translate a lot. So you see the weird terms for types. I also like that the guide trusts you after a certain point to understand type weaknesses and strengths.
Yeah it was only in Japanese for the first year until the popularity started spreading
"Hidden Skills" I believe are probably what she was calling HMs when referring to them. It's not surprising by any means since her first experience playing the game was in another language and Pokemon was still in its infancy when she wrote the guide.
Gosh. I had this guide. I had it practically memorized as my brother made me read it to him while HE was playing. As i did with most of the games growing up.
You even read it to him, you’re a good sister!
He would also probably give you the unplugged controller so you could “play” on console 😂

We had to tagteam single player games. We usually alternated who played which game so we could experience multiple stories at once and not get bored by replaying the same part twice.

My brother and I attempted to tag team Yellow version growing up and ended horribly. We would sabotage each other instead and made it difficult to progress through the game lol. So I definitely commend you and your brother!
Her intro in the guide book brought back a lot of familiar feelings of when I picked up this game when I was 8... man, what a time! She did a pretty good job, I think, considering what she had to work with and how few terms Pokemon actually had at the time. Fun video, thanks for doing it.
I assume the "special skills" increase referenced for blaine is in regards to the Volcanobadge passively boosting your Pokemon's Special Stat in gen1. Dont know why it didnt reference this for the others since i think most the badges in gen1 had an effect like this

All even Badges gave a boost that was glitched and stacked with stat boosting moves like Agility.

@@VirtualVirtuoso101 Yeah, evasion breaks the game even harder than speed, which crit chance is attached to in this Gen.
@@FernandoRafaelNogueiraReis haha I just use 140 power slash because the high chance of crit moves are auto crits. I love Gen I glitches. Another one of my favorites is the pokedoll glitch, the only time I've ever gone through the Rocket Hideout that I can remember is the nuzlocke I'm currently in the middle of lol
It’s so cool that the guide writer was already playing and enjoying Pokémon in Japanese before the English release. Kind of want to go back and play Red or Blue on the virtual console. Maybe if I can convince my friend to play the other game.

Well I mean.. if you don't put worth to specific mons.. it being capable of using HMs is a good thing
I don't think Moltos and flame type are mistakes, she played it in Japanese so she didn't know what we'd end up calling all that in English and the pokedex bit had to be done after the official translations were done. Moltos was most definitely a beta name that got changed to fit the Spanish theme.
moltos is molt + dos, i think it was the order being switched around, it still fits the spanish theme

I am like 99% sure I had this same guide as a kid, I had such a strange feeling of nostalgia when you mentioned the "Trainer talk" parts and I distinctly remember using the map for rock tunnel to figure my way through it without having flash lol.
I'm also now realising this guide is probably why for years I thought Sabrina WAS the fifth gym leader lol and I used to always take the route south of Lavender Town to get to Fuchsia rather than the cycling road lol.

I used to own a lot of this guides when I was younger, so this is a nice nostalgia throwback!
I think this one is definitely my favourite of the guides you've covered for this series. The way Elizabeth explains what is going on feels (to me, at least) like having that one friend who beat a game way before you explaining the little things about the game to make it easier for you. It definitely feels a bit more informal, I think, but it just feels nice and personal
I remember from the Dutch guide of this game that there even was a suggested team: Blastoise, Dugtrio, Machamp, Alakazam, Flareon, and Raichu. That team indeed can take on any type.

I do have to say thank you for the long introduction on this one. It took me back to the exciting mysteries of these games that are all just common knowledge now. The hype back then for a mere 150 Pokemon and a few evolutions was crazy.

Out of all the guides, this one fills me with the most nostalgia! Really cool how you go over the bit of back story with the authors. Nice to put at least a name to the person that helped me learn Pokémon red! Back in the day when blockbuster existed and still carried n64 games and game boy color games and would rent the same red version over and over till my dad finally just bought it for me upright from the blockbuster. Good times and great vid bud 👌👌
Most of the weird terms are direct translations from Japanese. For example, flying type is indeed flight type (ひこうタイプ), fire type is flame type (ほのおタイプ), and moves are techniques/skills (わざ) in Japanese.
I DO LIKE A LOT your intros and how you describe and show the guides and what's inside them in your videos... Keep up with that, it's One of the best parts

I actually ended up growing bored with Pokemon and actually stopped playing for years until one morning I downloaded Pokemon Red on virtual console and I'm loving it.
I feel like these early games (gens 1-3) really provide such an exiting experience.
And Its honestly really just wholesome that back when there weren't like 800 Pokemon that the community was still thriving.

That used book is about two steps ahead of my Colosseum guide, reading it so many times lead to the front pages falling off. That binder is a great idea, ngl.

When he was naming his character I thought he was about to put my first name and got spooked. I was like "NO WAY!", and then he stopped at Sea, and I was like "that makes more sense".
I think the reason why it says Flight/Flame in the main guide and Flying/Fire in the Pokedex section is that, since it's basically a cut/paste data section, the Pokedex was probably added after they had the full translation data, while the person writing the main part had to make due with what they had at that time.
I've enjoyed all of these Nintended videos, but this one is really a gem. That guide is such an interesting slice of history, from a time when a phenomenon was still new and unknown. No Pokémon product will even feel like this one ever again.

I think when the guide says the Volcano Badge increases your special skills, it means that the badge increases your Special stat slightly for all your Pokemon. The Boulder Badge, Soul Badge, and Thunder Badge also give you badge boost to different stats as well.
This is a great video! Makes me nostalgic of Pokémon’s early days.

I have the Red version of this guide. It's sadly not in great shape, but it was my first strategy guide and I attribute my obsession with guides and collector art books to it.
I appreciate these videos greatly because it gives me a chance to really see these guides that I may otherwise not have an opportunity to experience. This particular video is great because it takes me back to the countless hours that I spent reading this guide and playing the games, so thank you for this!
I agree the intros are great in this. Especially when the games are being played out of order so its a good way to set up where we're at and how each guide came to exist without whiplash from future guides.

9 year old me fighting the league with my lvl 77 Infernape and lvl 42 Steelix.
When I first played Blue back when I was 5/6 I remember reading something in Oak's lab about bringing your strongest pokemon to challenge the Elite Four. Not realising that the plural of pokemon was pokemon, I thought that meant you could only use one pokemon in the Elite Four. Thats how my very first run was effectively a Blastoise only run. The other 5 were just the highest level pokemon out of what I had already caught.
These guides were so magical to me as a child; indescribable really. So many hours just reading through it and being fascinated by the art.
I had the Charizard version. It wasn’t well made and the pages came apart easy so I think the previous owner just felt it easier to take them all apart and put them in a binder. Memories 😭
I do appreciate the consistency of the silly phrases across all the Pokémon Nintended videos. Very important to keep hammering away in two shakes of a lamb's tail.

Big fan of the backgrounds and graphics of this guide, as well as the font. It feels so chaotic and flashy and yet, so inviting.

I love that they made the same guide with two different covers. But then that’s how it’s become the biggest media franchise in the world, I guess. They knew their marketing from the get go.
Gen 1 has got this weird ‘still figuring things out’ vibe about it that you can still feel playing the games today, it was such an exciting time to follow the franchise.

I remember having this walk through as a kid, from what I remember the spine of the book was pretty crappily put together so it wouldn't surprise me if the seller just took it apart to preserve the pages

When the guide was talking about earning a badge and followed up with saying "This will increase your pokemon's special skills" I think it might've been talking about how your pokemon received a boost in stats because in gens 1 and 2 and possibly 3 badges would boost your pokemons stats.

Really enjoy this manual. It kinda has the element of someone truly learning how to play and falling in love with the game.

I got my first copy of Pokemon red 23 years ago for my 13th birthday and still love playing that game today. The next game I got was yellow and spent so much time with it because you can get all 3 starters which is something I just love doing with all the games. I didn't get blue until after Gold, Silver, and Crystal all came out because my friends got tired of trading me for the starters 😆. Also I love how you actually used a cartridge and Gameboy for the video, even if it was only for that one shot. love the video dude

The prices have been pretty consistent from when I started making these videos. A lot of the guides now are the same price from when I first purchased them for these videos
I really appreciate the guide book maker's insight into the games they played, as a kid I often skipped over them like for Mario and Luigi superstar saga(you should try that one as nintended lol), but now it feels like we're bonding with a person who didn't intially think much of the series at first (kinda reminds me of me getting into the trails games lol)

29:30 FYI: In the early games, certain badges actually raise some of your party's stats - for example, your team gets a slight buff for the Special Stat (which is Special Attack AND Special Defense in the first gen) after defeating Pyro.

When I was a kid playing through Red for the first time, I honestly thought that Blaine was an alien because the sunnies on the sprite looked like big, sterotypical alien-eyes... And that's *still* all I see whenever I look at that version of Blaine. 🤦🏻♂️
I used to do that exact thing with my strategy guides: rip them out by page and put them in page protectors and then into a binder. I had a number of guides like that.
the craziest thing about how he said he played it for the first time on a plane flight from michigan to california is that i first played pokémon blue on a flight to see my grandma and i was going from california to michigan. that’s wild
This was probably the best one yet! Great way to relive that first time playing the games with minimal knowledge of what’s coming next.
I completely understand the binder idea. It could have drastically improved the lifespan of those pages if they were to be in my care all those years ago.
Hello from a new subscriber. I liked the long intro. Not many, if any, would show that kind of attention to reading that guide book. I’ve never heard Articuno pronounced as Arti-kew-no before, lol. Interesting how differently names can be pronounced.
I miss a guide that small that was still super informative. I had all three games at once and just learned after taking all the Ls, like going against Brock in Pokemon Yellow with only a Pikachu and Ratatta 🙃
I definitely used a Male Nidoran with double kick for the other two games
