im wondering if you ever realized he didn't have a dash it was a ground slam lol, your game is my favorite out of the 3 in that competition and I love your nector project
@nerdchomp lol yeah I swear he said it was a slam attack, ive just got into blender, unreal engine in the last year I've been slowly working on one project my characters a little guy like yours but he's a voodoo doll I have no idea what direction I'm going, so I've just been adding everything games have I figure if it feels right I'll keep it if not I won't use it, I love the little effects you have on your characters feet when he walks and jumps and stuff.
@@smcfadden1992 I think that's the best way to learn if you don't have a lot of experience. Think of something you want to add to your game, and then figure it out as you go with tutorials and experimentation. Even if it doesn't end up in your final, you've learned a new skill that will probably be useful later. Keep it up!
@nerdchomp Yes because I have watched tutorials that are an hour plus in length and they are so in depth they really don't teach you anything, I watched one am after an hour and a half I was shown how to take the base 3rd person character, delete his movement components and make one's that are worse than how he started lol, I watched a 28 minute video and was able to model my character in blender get animations from mixamo put him in unreal and edit his animations, my number one downfall is I have no root bone but I've added animation keys to fix most of his animations, could still use some weight painting but it's way better than it was he no longer looks like a flying squirrel when he jumps
Love the devlog! And LOVED the game! Congratulations! And even though you already were before this competition, I'm really happy to hear you declare yourself as a game developer officially! I'm super proud of the progress you made an it's was an honour to be on this journey with you! Let's keep it up together! Well done! 🥰
3:00 this moment is so funny to me because the night before my challenge I did the same thing, and dreamed the entire competition with the theme “Night And Day”
This game had such an amazing atmosphere and I was rooting for it from the start. Like seriously I felt so proud when they announced Imago as the winner. Good job and subscribed :)
When I saw that you were in blackthornprod's video I rooted for you the whole time, and your win was very deserved, the idea for the game is super unique I bet this will bring more people to your channel too!
sounds like you have a good sense of what things can be cut, what needs more work, etc.. that is a good strength to have. combine that with some creativity and persistence and you can iterate your way to a fun game no matter what the topic is.
I actually originally had that in there, but I had to cut it cause they didn't want our devlog sections to be too long (considering the video is already like 40 minutes)
just thinking of a little thing that you can add, it would be great to add a camp fire extinguished were you spawn at the start of the level so it makes sense with the end of the previous level. (really good video and game hope you made more of thoses)
There is actually already an extinguished fire where you spawn! It's just behind the player, so it didn't usually show up in my recorded footage. But I might try to add stuff to the transition to make it more immersive
Suggestion: Rather than costing time via UI, make all of the events and actions you can take use your *actual* time by putting them in the world with you. For example, maybe you can see somehow that there’s a bug in a certain part of the map. Similarly, maybe instead of cocooning as an option, instead it simply metamorphosises your bugs if you don’t use them at all. Obviously this kind of thing wouldn’t have been possible during the time restrictions of the competition, but now that you’re out of that I think that would lead to a much more integrated and fun gameplay experience overall
This remember me of my P.E teacher. He always said that when he selected our grades, instead of fixating on if we did the exercises perfectly on the final physical test, he tried to think about our progress and I think that, that is one of the main reasons you won, because your progress was very impressive and also because your game was very interesting and had some refreshing elements on it. Congratulations! Your game is charming
I hope that more environments get added, which are reached with higher spare time. For example: -The Blizzard getting further away, thereby reaching semifrost with obstacles like mud or collapsing floor -A foresty area with limited combat to provide a final challenge before reaching the imago stage It could also be interesting to have branching paths to give the player a better influence. Additionally some bugs like silk worm can be linked to the different stages to limit their op capabilities and give even more build variety. This game reminds me of a kind of cute Metro Gameplay(i.e. Spare time equaling the Gas Masks and abilities representing different weapons of your arsenal) and seems insanely fun and interesting. Hope to see more!
Congrats man!!! Based on my personal experience, due to Impostor Syndrome, I highly advice that you relax and get out of your head for a while. You seem to have an amazing support system.
I think an interesting change for herb and predator RNG would be making the soawn rate of herbs and predators tied to saved time. The closer you are to saftey and or the more time saved the more opportunities to use herbs on bugs and encounter predators. It could make the later game more challenging, and be less punishing for players struggling with low saved time.
Fun idea: to represent the player inventory, make it a bug jar, so the character has a jar on its back filled with bugs and herbs and stuff you've collected (and if a bug is cocooned, it can visually look like a cocoon) I know it might be difficult/a niche visual thing, but I feel like it would be cute
I saw the competition video you know the very first thing caught my attention is your game it very unique the idea and the design and hoped you win and you actually win congrats
Well done. What an awesome game idea. I love the water wave level. Are the levels for harder - having big eating animals that only ate certain bugs - so you had to change whether you warned to or not, to escape - would add lots tension.
excited to see the progress for this game, the concept has so much potential. i hope you can flesh out the mechanics to make each is as important as the other! id love to see unique shape worlds that isnt just a square grid of tiles, and maybe the player would even have new kind of threat when they escaped the blizzard, so much ideas, great job!
I was just wondering if you add horrer elements into the game like some monster or predator chasing or just in the way and they can come from any wear and say pickabhoo 😨
I really like to ability you created to swing around the map. Would be good to have both a jump and the silk worm ability, then when you cocoon one the other one is still available. Then just add trees and branches that can be used to swing from tree to tree. Additionally, the ant wall stick would be cool to climb the trees, and then use the branches to jump or silk worm swing from one branch to the other. Could also add a glide, so if you get up into a tree you can then glide removing the need for the jump and the silk worm swing for those rounds. Look forward to seeing how this game evolves if you plan to keep pursuing it!
You could try adding 'rummage spots' to the actual levels where you can spend time to rummage and get new bugs or herbs. This would add secondary objectives to the levels and integrate rummaging more into the main gameplay. It could also be part of a solution to RNG, where if players don't like the bugs they receive, they can spend more time looking for rummage spots to get better ones rather than being stuck with their random options
i was rooting for yours the whole time!! 🎉🎉🎉 awesome game and loved watching the creative process and inventive ideas you brought into the game! i feel like i can really relate to the imposter syndrome feelings like you mentioned-but dont feel that way at all youre an awesome game developer!
Your game looks great, congrats! Love the ocean theme at the end. You missed an opportunity to use your venus fly traps instead of bear traps, would make more sense with bugs. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like the bugs and power ups should be actual items you collect along the way instead of cards. Make the rare items harder to reach, costing more time. Anyway, congrats again, looking forward to playing it at some point!
