    Join us this Sunday (the 22nd) - We will meet at Nano Cade (23 Ebenezer Pl, Adelaide SA 5000, Australia) at 9:30 for a coffee. We will leave ~10:30 for a 65km ride to Mount Lofty to watch the final 2 laps of the circuit. Then a nice cruisey 20km ride back into town. Potential for a few drinks back in the city if people are keen to hang around.

    Went in 2018, had a great time in the sweltering heat. We quickly worked out it was an early ride, see the race start, head to the pub, steak, beers, watch the race finish, ride home for an early dinner and repeat. Was the best 7 days of cycling in my life. I even got a faster segment than Thomas degent and andre greipel, so i was stoked.
    Enjoy the trip mate 👊🍺

    Opposing force causes a spiral fracture like this - like when arm wrestlers break humerus. This can start off when (for example) standing on both pedals when you either land hard after jumping over/off something or hit a hard pothole when standing on the pedals. I've seen it twice from the previously mentioned reasons.

      Hard hits and landings while standing on the pedals is common in MTB and I have never experienced or heard about someone experiencing that issue. Maybe the axles in Shimano MTB cranks are stronger?

    From the victim of the cracked spindle (me). It was D/A 9150 / Stages Gen 3. It was housed in a Wheels Manufacturing Outboard BBright > Shimano in a Cervelo S5. The BB setup probably eliminates the possibility of internal cable interference and misalignment. I will be expecting a replacement from the online retailer who sold it to me 12 months ago. Otherwise Shimano will have hell to pay from me.

    • @simonRt

      They should have made a bit thicker walls and this wouldn't have happened. Seems like a major design flaw, as many people in the comments point to similar experiences. What a bummer. I will now be extra cautious when accelerating on the descends/oncoming traffic. Good thing you are okay.

    Had the same happen on my SRAM Red 2 years ago. Took a bad tumble, luckily it happened so quickly I didn't have time to react and hurt too much. Broke my helmet too. Edit: I should add that SRAM EU's support and action in replacing the drive-train was exemplary. In retrospect, there had been warning creaks that I just put down to a bad BB. Worth checking yourself if you have an untraceable creak...

    A worn bearing will allow slack and start to wear the contact points of the spindle down. the more the spindle is worn down the faster it will wear. Once it gets thin enough it would be susceptible to a break as shown. It is a good idea to check bearing wear on the bottom bracket bearing and spindle.

  • @renegadeflyer2
    @renegadeflyer2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It could be the misalignment of the bearings in the bottom bracket, but I would have thought it would been noticed, when it was installed.

    I won't be surprised if Tiagra spindles are tougher but heavier. There is a price to pay for lightweight, and this is one of them.
    Haven't seen this happen on the TdF though, and those guys output a lot of watts on sprints.

    • @mrwhiteshorts

      remember we dont know if the pros (at the biggest races) get new cranks every day. Grand Tour bikes could be a bit like rally cars on a rally re how many new parts are on the car that finishes the rally.

    Now we all know, it is the maximum limit for a spindle/crank design.
    105 is the optimum design for a spindle/crank, while the ultegra and durace is too light but not safe, in term of engineering design at least by referring to Failure Mode Effect Analysis, the ultegra & durace both are very dangerous to use.
