#trailerrepair #diyproject #utilitytrailer Do you have a busted or missing trailer coupler? Not to worry! In this video, we'll show you how to replace your trailer coupler with a brand new, improved one. The coupler is arguably one of the most important components on a trailer. As its name suggests, it couples the tow vehicle to the trailer. However, it’s also one of the most overlooked and neglected parts of the trailer. Watch as The TrailerSmith points out critical areas of the coupler and shows you what to look for when deciding whether to replace it. This video follows the steps of removing the coupler, cleaning up the frame underneath it and welding on the new coupler. #thetrailersmith #towing #rv #bumperpull #coupler #fyp …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. Buddy thanks for taking the time to share this. My trailer coupler got messed yesterday and I will for sure remove the coupler and let someone else do the welding.
Good camera work (zooms in on where I have questions). Why the mono audio? Excellent channel for me since I just acquired a used trailer that needs a new bed and has jacked-up wiring; gonna try to tow it with an old Ford Expedition that does not yet have a receiver hitch. This channel can help me with all of that.
Sorry about that mono audio! We had issues with the settings on our mic that we thought we had worked out every time we recorded only to find out in editing that we didn’t. 😳 It’s part of our learning curve with recording videos for TH-cam. Thanks for hanging on and watching any way! I think we have the kinks worked out now. 😉
Thank you for putting this out there for us. Something i’ve always wondered about with these, is the angle the frame rails depart the coupler pretty much universally the same, or do you have couplers with different angles?
Hi! Thanks for watching! Great question. Most couplers have the same angle. Many times we trim or slightly modify the existing tongue to fit the new coupler. As a last resort, sometimes the new coupler will have to be cut & modified to fit the existing tongue.
I had my trailer damaged from a car accident at high speed and the trailer latch is damaged. The other drivers insurance is going to give a little less and let me keep the trailer still. I’m going to fix it but was wondering how much would it cost to change the coupler?
Hi! We use mig 99% of the time. We use stick occasionally on thicknesses beyond 1/2”. If you’re proficient at using stick, 7018 will be just fine. Thanks for watching! Hope this helps to answer your question!
My doo little trailer has a bad area where the ball hooks to the A coupler the top is rusted almost all the way off how much do you charge to replace the a frame coupler and where are you located?
As much as I like to have comfortable feet, those safety tennis shoes and socks look pretty flammable. I'd at least get those babies covered up, especially if you're going to be directing the flame towards them. Nice work though, guy.
I typically wear my leather work boots to do the heaving welding in. But for long work days standing on the concrete I usually choose my sneakers for comfort. I honestly just forgot to change shoes before the welding. LOL That happens more often than I'd like to admit. Thanks for watching!

50 degrees
Will a sideway bent trailer coupler at the ball cause my double axle trailer to pull sideways?

I am normally in leather work boots for jobs like this, but for this specific video I had my tennis shoes on, so that's just how it worked out. 🙂
In a pair of adidas lol. I used to have little holes all in my sneakers too 😂

How much?
Why not just make your front cut and weld the new one on top?
