Trailer Hitch Replacement with a Twist.

  • Well, I thought I'd throw out another video before years end just for kicks so Follow along, if you like, as I remove and replace a Trailer tongue hitch. These are rather simple to do. They usually fall under a S.O.P. Standard Operating Procedure. No big challenge, just cut it off and weld it on but this one had a small surprise. I hope you can pick up a pointer or two. Enjoy and Thank you for the support.

      It’s fast, and also doesn’t put as much heat into the steel as a torch would, which can be important in some cases. In the hands of someone who knows what they’re doing, it’s possible to wash off old weld so cleanly that grinding isn’t necessary! IC Weld is clearly one of these people!

    • @sumduma55
      @sumduma55 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@danvertdavis6867 here is the problem. Federal regulation requires that welds and repairs to frames on vehicles driven on the road must be in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. This can be compounded by state and local regulation or laws.
      When you are talking about a triaxle dump, you have even more to worry about because federal regulation 393.201 limits what can be done to a frame on a commercial truck and/or trailer. They define a commercial motor vehicle as any vehicle or combination of vehicles having a gross vehicle weight "rating" of 1001 pounds or more.. notice the rating there. It is what the manufacturer says the vehicle can weight not how much it weighs at any given point in time and regardless of how it is titled or licensed in a state. Non commercial licrnsed vehicles and passenger licensed vehicles can fall within this regulation if the gross vehicle weight rating is high enough. The vehicle can be shut down on the side of the road and along with fines, you can be forced to repair or tow the vehicle from the spot.
      Now there most likely is an approved process for frame repairs. They might include welds and might include just replacing the actual frame rail section completely. It's up to the manufacturer what this process is. And you have to be specifically careful because some truck frames are heat treated or hardened after assembly so any welding or torch cutting on them can ruin the structural integrity of the frame making it even worse.

    The gouge is definitely a time saver.
    Years ago I worked at a large propane supplier in Toronto and when they were adding 4 more 30,000 gallon storage tanks in the yard they upgraded the older tanks. All the new openings for larger piping were fitted using a gouge. That was the first time for me to see a gouge in use and it was amazing to see how it handled the 1” steel tank walls.

    I might be the only person who doesn't know, but I'd like to see a video on how you setup your welding helmet where it goes back vertical and you just nod and it flips down perfectly. You keep making em ill keep watching em. Great videos!!

      At the pivot points of your helmet there are adjustment knobs on each side, tighten or loosen both knobs until your helmet will just stay raised, then a quick little shake of your head will flip the visor down.

    Nice to see a professional work, most youtube cutting torch work is followed by 5 minutes of sledge hammer work to beat the piece off

    I would be really interested in seeing a truck tour video showing what all you carry on the truck and how it is all stored etc.
