  • The Alfa Romeo 159 had many variations, and all of them were gorgeous to look at but are they worth buying, or are they just "style above substance"? 15 years after the 159 was first launched, prices have tumbled and Chris The Alfa Nut investigates whether these stunning saloons are now an incredible bargain or whether they are best avoided!

The only tiny thing wrong with the looks of the 159 is the front overhang is a bit "much". But that's entirely forgivable. The Giulietta is awkward, it's miles better than the Golf, Astra, Focus etc but it's clear that modern safety and practicality weighted heavily on it's design.

The Giulia Veloce is indeed a wonderful car! I have a 2017 model with the adaptive suspension and all the gimmicks, and I love it to bits! Best salon car I've ever owned and a blast to drive on both country roads and the Autobahn. I love to give BMWs, Mercedes and Porsches a hard time. On a straight track, they can show off their horsepower, but as soon as the road gets curvy, the fun starts and they start to struggle.

Hi, thanks for the video! I'm a 159 owner, a 2.4 Ti Qtronic. Wonderful car. Reliable, fast, fun to drive. And oh so beautiful. To my mind the last of the beautiful Alfas (8C aside). I've had mine remapped, and it produces 240bhp and 480Nm of torque. No problems with the remap at all. The only downside to my car is the heavy fuel consumption, exacerbated by the auto box. I'm lucky to get much over 20mpg around town. Almost twice that on the motorway though. It's a brilliant, serene motorway cruiser. Mine has taken me all over Europe with no problems. Anyway, thanks again, for drawing attention to these underrated cars. I have subscribed to your channel :-)

    • @TheAlfaNut
      @TheAlfaNut  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks Ric, yes I’d like to try out a 2.4 - to me it seems like the best compromise of all the engines: quick, torquey, economical (sometimes!) and with 5 cylinders it sounds great too!

  • @downesy68
    @downesy68 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

I love my ti Sportwagon. It runs the 2.4 diesel and there’s no complaints about the acceleration (once the turbo gets going). I never get tired of looking at it and it’s a beautiful car to drive. So comfortable and I love the steering feel. Mine’s done 140,000km now and it’s as solid as a rock. No rattles or squeaks and everything works. The only complaints I’d have are the lack of cabin storage and cup holders and the horrible Bluetooth system.

Great video! Ive had my 159 since the 7th of December, she's a 2010, Red 2.0 jtdm Sportwagon, in Ti spec, lots of spec too including factory Xenons and a (rather noisy) sunroof.. I've recently had it remapped to 210hp, and 477nm of torque and EGR valve deleted, so goes very well now! It's on 90,000 miles now, everytime I drive it, I can't believe how well built it feels, and rattle free. Such a lovely place to sit, with the brushed aluminium dash. I did go searching originally for the 1.75 tbi, but in the spec I wanted, and colour, they seem very rare. The 2.0D is great for a daily driver. It also seems to get quite a bit of attention, which I didn't expect.

Had a 1.9 JTDM TI for 2 years. Always hit 50mpg no matter how you drove it. Was a fairly good car to drive, Blue & me was a bit intermittent. Started having DPF issues around 130k Miles and the swirl flap went at 144k miles which meant engine replacement. Other things to watch out for with the 19 inch wheels was track rod ends and wheel alignment. Needed fixing every 6 months or the front tyres would wear unevenly. Looked amazing but beware of these issues.

I had my 2.2 TI black on tan 159 for 5 years, it’s the best driving FWD car I’ve had the pleasure to drive in anger. The interior is one of the best in any car ever, and those looks are to die for, IMO it needs to be a TI and need twin exhausts (2.2, 2.4, 3.2). I loved the shift feel, very short and positive, love the notchyness. I miss the feeling in other cars.
I assure you, a TI with the seats at their lowest and tilted back has a very sporty driving position for a saloon. Getting into a Giulietta afterwards felt like getting into an SUV.

It's always nice to find more informations, opinions, reviews, and random stuff about Alfas, and particularly about the one I own, the 159.
I have a 159 SW 1.9jtdm 150bhp. I found the SW more beautiful than the standard car, and more beautiful than any other SW. I do have the same set of interior color, for me, the most beautiful.
I do find the 150bhp enough but it does lack a bit of a punch. Summer tires get me a 8L/100km urban and 6L/100 combined, Highway get's me 6L at 100-110km/h, 6.5L at 120-125km/h. Winter tires substracts 0.5L/100km.
The gearbox it's precise but slow, together with the lack of punch when you accelerate from stop it does make a slow start.
My seats are similar and I love the quality of the leather. The car has 123k km on the clock and although the front seats, specially mine are a bit wear out in the sides, I think they are in great shape.
Driving position took me 1 year (I have back problems) to find, but once I got it right, it's amazing. To bad there's no memory. I do trips of 2000km with minor discomfort by the end.
The automatic wipers.... yes, piece of crap. The parking sensors.. the best I used (I have the 4/4 package)
I have Xenon headlight, this car used 1Ds models, very expensive.
Exhaust is silent, and hardly any smoke.
I have BOSE system sound. Not superb, but good. If you drive close to the front the sound might be a bit frontal, but if you get yourself a bit back it get''s really good.
Blue and Me system is crap. The Usb drive does not read all the files(I mean it does read mp3, but if you put 200 files in a USB PEN, it will only read about 70 or 100 and keep on looping the same songs).
I can't park straight because of the car curvature. :) Love it shape though.
Chassi is very solid, the car does not need such big tires also, it would withstand 200bhp no problem.
Trunk door is narrow but there's plenty of space for almost everything.
I have headlights waterjets I had to disable them, they consume 7L of water in one week. (One waterjet for each headlight, 6 headlights...)
Construction is solid despite myths, center console does not move, plastic in the doors upper part are kinda rubber instead of rigid plastics.
Curiosity: Since I started driving I never got a crack on my windshield, however I already changed my Alfa windshield twice... aerodynamics problem maybe?

From my experience Chris when I owned a 06 plate 2.4JTDm Lusso Saloon is 1. Yes the auto wipers were annoying 2. The folding door mirrors had character ( Mind of their own especially the drivers side on mine especially when unfolded )
    3. Auto headlights kept to Drivers choice when turned on / off ( Sensor too sensitive)
However I found it having a nice ride especially on the bumpy stuff ..
Very quick because of torque .
    Great driving it in snow.
Amusing as one dark morning I was driving it to work and I was pulled in by the police ..
The police following me had panicked when the dpf’s started to regenerate and the tail pipes glowed red.
And assurance words showing them the size of the handbook and saying in here but I cannot remember what page Alfa Romeo say it can happen make them change their mind and leave me alone lol
    Oh I miss my 159 😢

The Alfa Nut It is the oh embarrassment of a Seat Leon MK1 😖
I do also have a 156 2.0 JTS Veloce but is on decision as the rear suspension has collapsed and a ton of other work is needed including all belts & tensioners etc etc .
The 2.4 JTDm is a great sounding unit and a bit better in the slightly later models as the weight was reduced & it was increased in horsepower to 210 before it was totally taken out of the model range due to euro emissions.
I am awaiting a decent amount of cash to come through from a investment to get a newer Alfa.
I am in a conundrum go with a older Alfa with the 2.4 JTDm engine such as a 159, Brera , Spider or go with a current Giulia which will be getting cheaper with the 2020 facelifted version soon new on sale ...

Still in my opinion the most beautiful sedan ever designed. The Giulia is for sure top-notch engineeringwise, but the 159 still is a presence to behold on the road, and despite all of the bad rap it was a great family car, unfortunately hampered by a very undertone marketing strategy.

I have the 159 2.2JTS 185 SW (Station) A great familly car, rock solid on the road and above 3000rpm the engine really comes to life. The seats can lower down and tilt so I get the sporty feeling. I think the desing /looks of the SW is much nicer than the sedan. It is strong enough to pull a big caravan and it drives very nice with long distances on the motorway. The gearbox 6 speed is very tight if you dont clutch on te good rpm it's getting bumpy. Also if you hit the gas with the faster gasoline version often check the oil regulary, they love to drink oil. (only Selinia)

@@TheAlfaNut So far I've only put about 1200kms on the clock and I'm still running her in. Picking one thing I like best about the Giulietta is tough and she looks, sounds, and performs superbly. However it's the handling that I like the best. I haven't been anywhere near her limits and probably never will. The steering is light but direct and the ride is pretty good for a hot hatch.
My last car was an AWD Volvo V50, with a similar power output to the Alfa. Other than more interior space I can't think of anything that the Volvo did better.
My only grip so far is the Dual Clutch transmission. It seems to hold on to first gear too long and at other times changes up too soon.
Will look forward to seeing your review on the Giulietta.

Mine: A 2007 159 2.4 Lusso, red (of course!) tweaked for better throttle response and about 235 bhp / 350 ft lbps of torque. Recently went to Scotland (Loch Tay area) from Kent and the car was superb averaging 45mpg, cruise control helped as well. Thing is though, it does make me feel good and most other 159 / Brera / Spider owners must feel the same because we'll acknowledge each other when we see another one (and let's face it you don't see many about unfortunately). Had it 3 1/2 years now and I still can't park it and walk away without looking back at it! Is that sad or normal?

I have a 2006 2.4 Turbo diesel, Manual with Ti Rims and Skirts. By far the best car i have owned. :) (also have 2x 2.0 Alfetta's and a '75' in the garage)
The whole car has been quality repainted in a metallic maroon and the Ti rims in a metallic grey. Has the same tan interior as the one your in. Its at 156,000 kms and it hasn't missed a beat since i've owned it.
Here in Australia the roads are quite shite most places so cant play around too much, i've broken 2 Ti rims on the shittily built country roads where i live. Which weren't easy to find or cheap to replace!
But the fuel consumption is amazing! I average about 4.5L /100km @ 100kmph. On a motorway nearer the city i was cruising at 145kmph at 4.8L/100k's on cruise control. This car was built to be powerful yet efficient, and can tell that it was developed for Europe's Superstrada's and Autobahns.
Sadly modern cars are less efficient and weigh even more. Mine is about 1635kg, about 215hp, and around 250kmph top speed and can go up to 1100kms cruising just over the 100kmph speed limits.
((Mine must have been modified under the hood also, bc the book top speed is 228 and i've had it to 245 relatively easy. ))
It is more efficient than all newer modern common cars of similar size. The only others i've found to be similarly efficient are new diesel Mercedes and a couple other high end brands which 'claim' around 6.5L/100k's.
I bought it 2 yrs ago for AUD $6400 with all the Ti kit already on it, which is pennies compared to the quality, luxury and performance this car has. The biggest cost has been insurance and rego as usual, grrrr.

After 2000 km broken the automatic gear: I renew it. Before this breaking no one big problem! Now the car has 385.000 km and it is still amazing to drive! Last week Svitzerland and Austria for work! Believe me: I enjoy my Alpha 159 like the other three. Each great car has its own character and Alpha 159, as daily car thet you can drive like a sport car, is amazing too! About this car I love the general balance, the handling, the perfect seat, the good comfort, the amazing stirrer. I will send photos to Alpha Nuts. N.B., Not an Alfa owner (anymore, sadly) -- I had a few roadsters before getting my first Alfa: An MG Midget, an MGB and a Triumph TR6. All were fine, and fun to shift. When I took out my first Alfa (a 1750 GTV), and experienced that transmission, I fell in love- A Five speed, long throw, and so smooth. It seemed to coax me to use my whole arm to toss it into gear. Like it preferred I shift with elan, even when I was all alone. It was glorious and felt as though I was conducting a symphony. It was an unforgettable experience that held through my next Alfa, a Spider 2000. Same deal. When I got my Alfetta, I was a bit let down, with it having a trans-axle in the rear. Still, the memory of my previous Alfas have ever defined for me, just how glorious an car could be.

I have a 2.4 auto, I think equivalent to your Ti versions almost with almost fully loaded options - though no Satnav mind you. Remapped to avoid turbo lag that meant your average Corolla could get one off you off at the lights. Drives brilliantly. Still suffers from the occasional acceleration flutter when increasing speed after staying on highway constant cruise speed for some time.

Heyy...new 2007 Alfa 159 owner here. Same car as in the video (model engine, color). Bought it 3 weeks ago, October 2020 and still compilating impressions. Got the excellent price of 6000€ for a mint condition 80k kms car! ..pretty amazing. - Thanks for the video Chris, it's great. I like your accurate English accent too :)....I agree with everything said, I would perhaps comment that the standard 150cv engine, without being agressive, it's definately not slow, it's got quite a good response. Not super powerful but enough for some quick 3rd/4rth gear accelerations here and there (0-100 km/h in less than 10 seconds is fine by general standards). - Roomwise, I dont have children to take onboard but music gear instead that needs a fair amount of room/boot, and the 159 ticks the box!...Sadly, the car's front interior has an irritating lack of space to put stuff (papers, wallet, coins, CD's, etc), and I mean little, far less than usual compared with other cars.....Finally, many thanks to the Brera first 2002 concept design for letting the 159 copy that wonderful front :)

But anyway I understand 135 bhp must be a little slow as you said. -- The 150 one is quite Ok. So far so good in my 1rst year of owning a 159 1.9 JTD. There is only one thing that I need to check...every now and then the car is suffering from power being cut off when accelerating. It cuts and then it goes again, and repeatedly. I need to get it checked up. -- BTW!!! I listened to your songs, they sound neat! soul, jazzy fusion,...and fun tracks like Mr. Akufo! haha....smart chords and progressions everywhere, congrats!!!! Great work...I dont have Spotify, but I listened to them in the Shazam website. -- My style is heavy-rock. I love Thin Lizzy!! Been playing a solo acoustic hits set for 10 years now..., then playing bass in a Queen tribute band (Scaramouche) and preparing the lead vocals for a new Hard Rock/Heavy Metal classics setlist. Recently I drove a 159 JTD and I was disappointed by the interior. Then, a few months later, I drive a Spyder of same era, and I loved it, which is strange because the interior was virtually identical. I think I need to try another 159. However, I will say that after years of driving Volvos, the known issues with these 159/Breras have will take some getting used to, but they do look very nice...

3.2 JTS is fun one too. When buying winter car I went back and forth between 2.4 JTD Q4 and 3.2 JTS Q4 many times, but ended up buying 3.2 JTS as here in Finland it had nearly 25% lower tax than the diesel with the addition that I could buy petrol car at ~2/3 of the price of a diesel. Even when considering that JTS might need the timing chain change it made more sense to buy the 3.2 over the 2.4 for the four months I needed winter car for ;)

Interesting Video, but what are your detailed thoughts on the 2007 2.2 Brera Petrol Manual FWD Version ?
    Specifically: Underbody Chassis/Subframe/Suspension Corrosion/Rusting Problems
Step Up OR Step Down ?

    • @TheAlfaNut
      @TheAlfaNut  3 ปีที่แล้ว

More like a step sideways I would say? The Brera wheelbase is 170mm shorter, so handling tends be a little more nimble but the same problems beset both cars: notchy gearbox, rusty subframes, excess weight and blunted performance as a result. I have only driven the 2.0 jts Brera Prodrive edition, which handled well due to stiffer and lower suspension and looked great but the ride was harsh on the 19” wheels and it still felt heavy. To be fair though I could live with it because its so gorgeous and even better looking than the 159! I would probably buy the V6 4WD and use it for Winter fun! Decision decisions 😄

It had engine distributions chains belt, tensioner and water pump along with the whole kit replaced new, but still has some issues with the oil pump( new oil pump required). Price bargained is 2000euro...

A workhorse - a great way to describe it! My 2.4 has done over 210k miles, what is still original: DMF, clutch, driveshafts, DPF etc. Components that fail more early on many manufacturers cars. Great improvement on body rust protection and electronics over previous Alfa models. Interiors look and feel better than other cars of same value. 159's have some weak points also- the front suspension components aren't very durable, handbrake is weak, the body gets corroded over time(boot, subframes) without attention, and the car is very heavy. Also the smaller GM gearbox is not very good as you said. 3.2 JTS and 2.4 diesel have much stronger gearboxes. Although the pretty design, I'd say a 159 is not a fragile italian, it is a very strong machine and easy to work on. It really has some german feel in it as mentioned on these comments (Bosch engine electronics and fuel injection systems etc) it even says VDO on the instrument panel.

The 156 has brilliant handling on dry roads and has brilliant feedback through the steering, it's hard not to drive it flat out all the time, on wet roads you have to restrain yourself in the corners though as she will slide, the 159 is the opposite though, while it doesn't feel as sporting of a drive there is still fantastic feedback from the steering and can be pushed through corners on wet roads way faster than a 156. In fact on wet Irish roads once you get used to a 159 it's hard to have faith in the handling of any other saloon car, always heel/toe and blip the throttle on the down change.

@@TheAlfaNut the only thing I missed from Alfa is they didn't make a sport version like the 156 Gta or the 147 Gta. Or a "Quadrifoglio" version.

I have an 08 jtdm sportwagon. Best damn used car I've bought. I took it between bologna and Rimi and clocked 240kph and I think it could of gone further. This car handles amazing. 0 to 100 6.6 secs.

I have had two 159s both used as company cars, an early 07 plate 159 1.9JTDm 16v 150hp Sportwagon Lusso, did over 110000 miles in 3 years and never missed a beat, the second was a used 11 plate 159 Lusso Sport saloon, 2.0 JTDm 170hp. I bought it at 5 years old with 98000 on the clock, kept it for 2 years and added another 55000 again ultra reliable. Best handling front wheel drive cars I have driven and easily a match for my BMW 3 series. Really wanted to find a 1750TBi Ti saloon but very rare!

Hi Bob, Thanks for watching and commenting. Glad to hear it - Alfa reliability is a very old and very boring stereotype which got old a LONG time ago! Alfas are easily as reliable as anything German, provided they are looked after. Not rocket science really is it?

I bought a 3.2 JTS in that same red a few weeks ago. got it for a bit over 3 grand and its in super condition. 60,000 miles and new brakes, clutch and tyres in the last year or so. Amazing car for the money and very, very nice to drive. goes like a stabbed rat too.

@@TheAlfaNut certainly am! Have just moved to Turin, Italy from australia to restudy and change career, as a student I'm on the hunt for a bargain wagon.
Can't get much better in the looks department than a 159 sports wagon, I may have found a white ti 2.4 auto with the rare sunroof and q4 options and only 96,000kms :D (now I just have to navigate the Italian car ownership system with little knowledge of Italian.....)

i have had a 2008 159 sw with the 1.9jtdm 16v for little over a month and its been great i did have to change the driveshaft and some general service but it does have 330 000km so it is expected but i know it still has plenty of life in it since its been serviced well and i will continue to take care of it and hopefully get it over 400 000km which is my goal with this car really to try to get an alfa to high mileage

    • @TheAlfaNut
      @TheAlfaNut  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Jesper - be careful to choose a car with good subframes, as they rust badly on the 159 and Brera! Get the 2.2 if you can - they are better all round. Whichever you choose, get the best maintained car you can afford, with some good service history. Good luck!
