Mighty impressive show guys 💯💯🤘🤘. Introduction to Rush- Finding My Way To Frank Marino-World Anthem. Thin Lizzy-Emerald awesome. What fanastic choices guys. Love this show 2 knowledgeable guys talking sense ❤❤❤❤🤘🤘🤘🤘
I always look forward to these 'Songs That Define a Guitarist' episodes because of the chemistry between you and Phil! You two bounce really well off of each other!
This series usually lasts about 50 to 60 mins long each time but , I will take over an hour plus to finish it. I keep pausing, open another browser, go to youtube and check out the song that you guys were talking at that moment. By they way, how about Sails of Charon on Uli John Roth's Tokyo Tape Revisited? I love it.
@45:39 love the shoutout to Y&T, and thanks for the book mention, Pete! Check out our chat about DOWN FOR THE COUNT: The Y&T Album Review book on this channel!
Close your eyes and listen to Electric Reflections of War and you will feel like your in Vietnam 1968. Saw him play this live, (I was 15) completely blew my mind. Will never forget that show.
Steve Morse / Dixie Dregs was my first introduction to what I consider, for me personally, the seeds of “Rock Fusion” as a teenager in the 70’s, and before I even knew about the genre, which came later in the 80’s with my discovery of Jazz / Rock / Fusion, with the likes of Mike Stern and early Yellowjackets, featuring Robben Ford on guitar. I had the privilege of seeing / hearing Steve Morse’s band play live in a very large airplane hanger bay, in Yokosuka Japan, while serving in the NAVY, in 1987. I hope I can find those pictures of the concert some day, along with the title to my 1993 GMC. Thanks! for your show and channel Pete.
Frank Marino. Just about to do a video on my own channel on this fella. For me Something’s coming our way. But live it’s Talkin Bout A Feelin/who do you love/ electric reflections/world anthem. Fabulous show as ever. Cheers, Chris
GR8 episode guys and thanks for mentioning Lifeson and Marino it proves that Canada can do more than play hockey. Also giving Dave Maniketti his due was awesome Y&T is a great band and have a few of the disks.
1. Allan Holdsworth: UK - In The Dead Of Night 2. Steve Hackett: Genesis - Firth Of Fifth 3. Pat Metheny: PMG - Are You Going With Me? 4. Frank Gambale: Chick Corea Elektric Band - Charged Particles 5. Yngwie Malmsteen - Black Star 6. Eddie Van Halen - Eruption 7. Al Di Meola - Race with Devil On Spanish Highway 8. Joe Satriani - Surfing With The Alien
Great idea Pete, what exactly is the contribution from a great guitar player that resonates with everyone!?Love the choice of guitar greats here! Blue Murder from Sykes a great choice. Yes YYZ for Alex and La Villa from Exit , great choices guys!
Always great having Phil and Pete together. Enjoy all these episodes a lot! This might be the episode with the best choices, Pete never disappoints. Di Martini, Sykes, Alex, Frank Marino, Gillis, Meniketti. Fantastic Pete! My choices: Sykes - Billy Marino - Stories of a Hero (live) Di Martini - Lay It Down (one of the best riffs ever?) great solo too but for me, Ratt is more about the riffs! Robertson - Emerald Lifeson - La Villa Strangiato Roth - Sails of Charon Morse - Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming Brad Gillis - Touch Of Madness (Brad is one of my top 10 fav guitar players and he is THE Whammy guy. Just listen to the end of this track!) Di Meola - ? Need to do research not really my type of music. Meniketti - I Believe In You! Also one of my fav players/vocalists and one of my fav bands Y&T FOREVER! And please Pete there never can be enough talk about Y&T one of the most underrated bands ever! Would be nice if you could put Meanstreak in an album war with the hudson valley sometime.
Great choices for Robbo, such a pity he left Lizzy, they were never the same afterwards. As for Alex Lifeson's memorable solos, ya got all night? Steve Morse, solo, IntoThe Light off What If, with Purple has to be When A Blind Man Cries off Live At Olympia, Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming is also way up there
Sykes- Thunder & Lightning, Marino- The Answer, DeMartini- Round & Round, Robertson- Boys Are Back In Town, Lifeson- Return Of The Prince, Roth- Steamrock Fever, Morse - Ted The Mechanic, Gillis - Goodbye, DiMeola - Land of the Midnight Sun, Meniketti - Earthshsker
Us usual suspects had fun trying to guess you two gentlemen s selections. It was a blast. I actually had 3 same picks combined. Thanks again Phil and Pete. For your time. Two extremely knowledgeable and true gentleman as well 👍💯
5 Steve Rothery, Marillion Easter. 4 Ritchie Blackmore, Deep Purple Burn. 3 Adrian Smith, Iron Maiden Stranger in a Strangeland. 2 Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin, Achilles last stand. 1 Malcom Young, AC/DC Hell's Bells.
Great show guys. I am sticking to my Canadian boys. Got to agree with Pete, La Villa Strangiato is just amazing, but what makes him great is his ability to change to match the music and song. AND the Canadian Shred & Pedal Master, Frank Marino, not being a jazzy kind of guy, I have to go with Ain't Dead Yet, beginning to end speedy power shredding, but being an old guy I grew up listening to his Hendix-ish stuff.
Looking forward to the 'best openers' show... though I have to say that the top album-opening one-two punches would've been even more interesting personally.
I hate to query Phil, but he plays down Scott Gorhams contribution to Still In Love With You a bit, I actually prefer Scotts conribution myself. However, Don't Believe a Word would be my suggestion for Roberston; great riff and solo (both live and in the studio).
Hi Martin, fair point. I did not mean to play down Scott’s solo which is excellent but Robertson just edges ahead for me. It’s a personal and subjective view. Don’t Believe A Word is an excellent choice ! Phil :)
@@NowSpinningMagazine Thanks Phil, I think my preference for Scotts solo is also influenced by it being the slightly easier one to play myself😂. I can imagine thousands of budding guitarists have spent may hours trying to copy both solos over the years. Cheers
Ratt was one of those bands who wrote their best record first, each record after got less and less. Sure they always had that one good or great song but the rest of the record was filler.
I don't like Rush at all, nor its vocalist, nor its guitarist (genius?! LOL... "genius" is such an overused word nowadays). Neil Peart, on the other hand, a great drummer and very interesting person.
Always love seeing Phil on the channel
Great selections gentlemen!
Phil & Pete are the best!
Mighty impressive show guys 💯💯🤘🤘.
Introduction to Rush- Finding My Way
To Frank Marino-World Anthem.

I always look forward to these 'Songs That Define a Guitarist' episodes because of the chemistry between you and Phil! You two bounce really well off of each other!
Thank you - we both end up reappraising the musicians we discuss and it certainly influences what I play next ! Phil :)

I think these shows are great. The level of discussion and analysis and insight is mighty impressive.
Thank you - they are ab absolute blast to do - Phil :)
So glad to see Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming on this list.
Oh wow, how have Y&T passed me by!!!! Just searched for I Believe In You......fantastic

56 minutes of fantastic choices
Two of my alltime favourite guitar solos are Steve Morse- Silhouettes in disguise and Frank Marino- Juggernaut.
Another great guitarist and lead vocalist. Rik Emmett
Absolutely brilliant format for a show,very informative 👏🏻 👍🏻 👌

Another great discussion. Nice to see the spotlight shined on some amazing guitarists. 🎸
Uli on Catch your Train blew my mind when I was 9. I wanted a different life with Whiskey and Cola. It's still a go to song when I'm feeling down.
Excellent video, a lot of great players, a lot of my favourites. Thank you guys.
Frank Marino. Just about to do a video on my own channel on this fella. For me Something’s coming our way. But live it’s Talkin Bout A Feelin/who do you love/ electric reflections/world anthem.
Fabulous show as ever.
Cheers, Chris
Tony Martin wrote the lyrics to VOTK and contributed backing vocals. I know you gentlemen know this. Great episode.

This has become my favorite SoT show!
Thank you! It is great fun to do and Pete’s choices always inspire my listening for the rest of the week! Phil :)
Frank Marino. For me the definitive song is “The Answer” from the live at the Agora theater performance.
Great choice!
Great idea Pete, what exactly is the contribution from a great guitar player that resonates with everyone!?Love the choice of guitar greats here! Blue Murder from Sykes a great choice. Yes YYZ for Alex and La Villa from Exit , great choices guys!

My choices:
Sykes - Billy

Di Martini - Lay It Down (one of the best riffs ever?) great solo too but for me, Ratt is more about the riffs!
Robertson - Emerald
Lifeson - La Villa Strangiato
Roth - Sails of Charon
Morse - Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming
Brad Gillis - Touch Of Madness (Brad is one of my top 10 fav guitar players and he is THE Whammy guy. Just listen to the end of this track!)
Di Meola - ? Need to do research not really my type of music.

Great show love watching you guys together talking about all the guitar greats!
Touch of Madness is a banger!
I love Nightranger
Great choices for Robbo, such a pity he left Lizzy, they were never the same afterwards. As for Alex Lifeson's memorable solos, ya got all night?
Steve Morse, solo, IntoThe Light off What If, with Purple has to be When A Blind Man Cries off Live At Olympia, Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming is also way up there
Frank Marino - I have all the records + Agora Theater BR/DVD, so mission impossible but I always go back to Poppy from Real Live.
Agree Pete on Tokyo Tapes take out RNR tracks for sure
Sykes- Thunder & Lightning, Marino- The Answer, DeMartini- Round & Round, Robertson- Boys Are Back In Town, Lifeson- Return Of The Prince, Roth- Steamrock Fever, Morse - Ted The Mechanic, Gillis - Goodbye, DiMeola - Land of the Midnight Sun, Meniketti - Earthshsker
Michael Schenker - Into The Arena. Has pretty much everything I (we) like about him. Studio as well as live.
Uli Roth’s best playing might be on Firewind by Electric Sun. An outstanding album.
Love that album mate
I enjoy this series. Great discussion
A great show with inspired choices. Thank you Gentleman.
Uli Roth - Catch Your Train
Us usual suspects had fun trying to guess you two gentlemen s selections. It was a blast. I actually had 3 same picks combined. Thanks again Phil and Pete. For your time. Two extremely knowledgeable and true gentleman as well 👍💯
Thank you - Phil :)

Marino. Aint dead yet. Morse. I'm freaking out.
Frank Marino - I'm A King Bee of his Live Album - blistering guitar. How he wasnt more popular I dont know, hugely under rated.
Again another great episode with you both
Thank you ❤

@@NowSpinningMagazineGary Moore plays that solo better on Nightlife I think.
@@NowSpinningMagazine Thanks Phil, I think my preference for Scotts solo is also influenced by it being the slightly easier one to play myself😂. I can imagine thousands of budding guitarists have spent may hours trying to copy both solos over the years. Cheers
@@NowSpinningMagazine I actually prefer John Sykes' version of the solo on the "Life" album of 1983.
What was the al dimeola album I can’t catch the title and song
You have to separate Uli era from later Scorpions a fact that long time fans understand .
Uli great song choice he takes a lot of cr*p excellent guitarist and a very humble guy 💯💯💯
Am I the only one that thinks the end part of Emerald is way better on Jailbreak?
Ratt was one of those bands who wrote their best record first, each record after got less and less. Sure they always had that one good or great song but the rest of the record was filler.

Still no Randy Rhoads on this series?? Wtf? 👎🏻
He will definitely be on an future episode - Phil :)
