Dear Pete, of the many charming chaps (and chapettes) who appear on your channels I find that I share the most common likes and dislikes with Chuck. However, when he said he liked Henry Cow "Concerts", I shouted "YES!!" at my computer. Thank you so much Chuck for mentioning this album. It was released in 1976 so I would have been about 14 years old when I bought it. I have always loved this album. Side 1 of the vinyl contains the “songs” and the rest contains the adventures. I believe that the CD version contains their tracks from “Greasy Tuckers”. The last two minutes of “Keeping Warm In Winter” are really magical. I love how the chaos forms into a form of order with the piano and guitar. There are some very interesting live clips of them on youtube of performances in France and Switzerland. I read a quote once to the effect that bands like Henry Cow no longer exist because people like this no longer exist. Remember that this is Rock in Opposition. In opposition to what? What have you got? I would say that some of these went on to form the band Art Bears. If you find them of interest you may also check out Slapp Happy and (dare I say it) This Heat.
Tremendous show as usual. More homework in am. I’ll look for my list. Lol. Lately I’ve been listening to. HOURGLASS /. Prog metal type group from UTAH/ Like a poor man’s. Fates WARNING. Thank you sot. Panel 👍💯
Great picks tonight guys. You guys have a great chemistry on this show. Missed Steve and Chad but glad we got their picks. Adding Mathew Halsall to my Jazz collection. I'll definitely check out the new English Jazz scene as well. Thanks gentlemen

Gents, another great alphabet episode. Special thanks to Ken for mentioning Matthew Halsall and the album Fletcher Moss Park. Many more albums discussed yet to be listened to but Ken's discussion got my attention, and the first listen of the album was just a wonderful listen. Adding that one to the library though no doubt it won't be the last. Looking forward to the next episode but still needing to catch up by watching the last four. Thanks, gents, for your relentless pursuit of such great choices for the entire alphabet. These certainly are enjoyable.
Spend some time with Matthew’s music. You’ll find it rewarding. Also check out Nat Birchall (if you like John Coltrane) and Chip Wickham’s albums will remind you of Yusef Lateef.

I'm lovin' these alphabet shows! Thank you all! I'm surprised no one mentioned Haikara, love their first two. In addition to all mentioned, I'd add Hinn Íslenzki Þursaflokkur, Humus, Høst and Herba D'Hamelí.
Hands was interesting quite obscure band from US. Hoelderlin a German prog folk act. But my number one for this letter is obviously Steve Hackett. The guy is still active today, he released more albums than his Genesis colleagues combined, a huge discography. Voyage of the Acolyte one of the most beautiful music I've heard. Adore that album. Shadow of the Hierophant with celestial vocals by Sally Oldfield... incredible.
1) Herbie Hancock 2) Jon Hassell 3) Tim Hecker My latter two picks are pushing it a bit with respect to fitting under the prog/fusion labels, but I think they fit within the spirit of progressive electronic generally speaking. I highly recommend Jon Hassell's "Seeing Through Sound (Pentimento Volume Two)" and Tim Hecker's "Virgins" if you're into ambient prog along the lines of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze.
My picks for H: Hall of Fame: Hawkwind Peter Hammill Steve Hackett Favourites: Happy The Man Hatfield and the North Haken btw. looking forward to Pete's review of the new Hagma (sic) album out on 30.09 : Kartëhl (he,he)
Here are my picks in alphabetical order: 1.- Haken (Heavy Prog from the UK)-The Mountain [2013] 2.-Hardcore Anal Hydrogen [also known as HAH] (Experimental/ Math-Core/RIO from Monaco)-Hypercut [2018] 3.-High Castle Teleorkestra (Avant-Prog/Experimental Rock)-The Egg That Never Opened [2022].

@@bertkarlsson1421 I came across his work because of his connection at some point with Tatsuya Yoshida. But to be honest, I haven't explored much of his discography. Any suggestions?
My list: 1. Bo Hansson (Symphonic prog/Ambient) 2. Haikara (Eclectic prog with awesome vocals in finnish!) 3. Hansson & Karlsson (Jazz-Rock/Psych/Possibly the first prog band in the world) 4. Hawkwind 5. Hidria Spacefolk (Space) 6. Henry Cow (RIO) 7. Keiji Haino (RIO/Psych/Free Improvisation) 8. Harmonium 9. Hoelderling (Folk Prog)
Hectic Watermelon - The Great American Road Trip (2004). Excellent one and done jazz fusion like The Dregs, Steve Morse & The Mahavishnu Orchestra. Hidden Orchestra - Night Walks (2005) jazz, downtempo

Another great show gents even more to check out! My choices: 3. Holy River Family Band - "Welcome to Riverhouse" 2. Here & Now - "Give & Take" 1. Hawkwind - "Hall of the Mountain Grill" HMs: Haken; Harmonia; Haze; Hidria Spacefolk; High Wheel; Hoelderlin; Howth Castle; Hybrid.
By far and away, my number 1 here is Hatfield and the North. I love both albums, but probably listen to the first album the most. The flow of these albums is incredible and just speaks to me. I would also pick However, Henry Cow, Happy the Man, Helmet of Gnats and Steve Hackett.
Cool picks gentlemen. I have one that is a bit out of left field as they're not a prog band. But for one album they were very close: Hella - There's No 666 In Outer Space (2007) Crazy rhythms and song structures and a singer that is definitely an acquired taste, this is a melting pot of rock, prog, free jazz, noise, punk and math rock. With astonishing drumming from drum whiz Zach Hill (as is everything he plays on).
I don't know if our American cousins are aware that Hatfield & The North are named after a road sign when leaving North London. Literally "Hatfield (region in Yorkshire) & The North ("North of England). Thought you might be interested in that bit of trivia.
True, but the Hatfield on the road sign is a town on the A1(M) close to London, would have been the A1 Great North Road back in their day, and the town was then a designated New Town.
My 3 are in no particular order: Hawkwind - Quark, Strangeness and Charm Haken - Visions Peter Hammill - Over My HMs are: Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte Steve Howe - The Steve Howe Album Steve Hillage - Green
I've looked forward to coming up with my list ahead of the PS crew, so I can see if mine get mentioned: 3. Harmonia - Neu! and Cluster combined to form the ultimate motorik band 2. Heldon - French synth band with a dark, rock edge 1. Peter Hammill - perhaps my favorite songwriter ever! I was immediately won over by his solo records-which is not something I could say about VDGG. sadly, a few favorites didn't make the top 3; Henry Cow and Steve Hillage. and I hope Hatfield and the North get some love. fingers crossed...
1. Haken- Virus 2. Herbie Hancock- Crossings 3. Steve Hackett- Specral Mornings HM: Happy The Man, Hatfield and the North, Alan Holdsworth, Hawkwind, Steve Hillage, Hallas.
Tough letter 1. Hawkwind 2. Hackett 3. Roy Harper HM Hallas Herbie Hancock Freddie Hubard - fusion years Horslips Headstone - obscure prog psyche from Ohio Hot Tuna - yes the America choice yellow fever years
H was pretty straightforward for me, not a lot of choices. 1. Hällas - Isle of Wisdom 2. Hawkwind - Warrior On The Edge of Time 3. Helmet Of Gnats - Timeslip
H is a great letter for Space rock fans like me... Hawkwind, Hidria Spacefolk AND.... Steve Hillage! The obvious Hillage GO TO album is Fish Rising, it's fantastic from one end to the other, but man, check out GREEN, that's really good too!! What's new for me is the "L" album, and I am glad that I gave it a shot, (and yes, It's the one where he does his most famous covers.)
Ken, thanks for the invite to shoot you an email and tell you what happened! These shows are deadly for the monthly budget and there are a lot of letters to go still, but I had to buy the Matthew Halsall album you highlighted. You had me at 'cosmic'. And it didn't hurt that the Amazon rating average is a 5 for the album. Never heard of Haken, so I went with 'The Mountain'. Those are my buys this week. And to Anthony, I've got plenty of Hackett and Hillage already because of you, and Eric I already have both Happy albums. Chuck, Hatfield is already in the collection. I'm getting there! Luis, I spun a little Henry Cow the other day and you're right, its not an 'easy' listen but I won't give up yet with all the 'rewards' that you promised.
Glad to hear some love for Happy the Man and for the incredible "Sudden Dusk" album of the band However! Among the "not mentioned" bands/artists: 1- Homunculus Res : Limiti All'Eguaglianza Della Parte Con Il Tutto (amazing italian band influenced by Canterbury.Essential if you're a Caravan/Hatfield and the North fan) 2- Holding Pattern : Breaking the Silence (cool guitar oriented fusion/prog stuff with some Happy the Man flavour) 3- Richard Henshall : The Cocoon (fantastic solo album from the leader of Haken)
Dear Ken, I am afraid to say this as I have been wrong so many times before. So please forgive my mentioning this. I think that the TWO Michael Moorcock, Hawkwind books were called “The Time of the Hawklords” and “Queens of Deliria”. They were reportedly actually written by Michael Butterworth. There is reportedly a third graphic novel published much later called "Ledge of Darkness" by Bob Walker based on the writings of Michael Butterworth. I have never seen the graphic novel but years ago I used to have the two books. My first ever concert was when I saw Hawkwind on there “Quark, Strangeness and Charm” tour at Leicester DeMontford Hall. I was 15 years old and I went with some friends from school. Robert Calvert was the vocalist. I know that he was something of a troubled soul, but he was a great frontman. I believe some of the songs from that night were later released on “PXR5”. The album “Quark, Strangeness and Charm” seems to be a little over looked now but at the time it was quite popular. It also contains one of my favorite songs”Spirit of the Age”. Happy days.
I only had Time Of The Hawklords. It appears to be co-authored by Moorcock and Butterworth. Comments suggest that Butterworth was the main writer. Unfortunately I never saw Hawkwind with the Bob Calvert version of the band. Its my favorite period of theirs. Spirit Of The Age is a great tine!
Hello from the UK 🇬🇧. Another great episode fella's. H is probably my easiest picks. Hawkwind are my favourite band it's very hard to pick my favourite album of theirs. But probably Church of Hawkwind. No2 Steve Hillage Green and 3rd Steve Hackett Defector.
Yes Ken! Tell people all the time this is a golden age for jazz especially in the uk. And since we’re going slightly off-the-beaten-track, I’ll choose (3) the Heliocentrics, a psychedelic electro jazz/funk group- my favourite is The Last Transmission, a sci-fi concept album they did with Melvin Van Peebles. (2) Steve Hillage ~ Green. (1) Hawkwind ~ Space Ritual/Warrior on Edge of Time. H is for space rock.
Re: the Hawkwind books: I’ve read that Moorcock’s involvement in them was minimal - they were really the work of Michael Butterworth. I’ve called the first one, The Time of the Hawklords, the worst book I’ve ever read - but I’ve read it three times. The second was called Queens of Deliria. The third was actually a graphic novel that came with a Hawkwind box set - I don’t have that one, but one day I must get it. BTW, Hendrix, Hawkwind, Hillage, Happy the Man.
Yes they were co-credited to Michael Moorcock but he says they are Butterworth’s work mostly. Michael Butterworth has a very interesting biography if you look him up.
1-Happy the Man 2- Haken 3-Hallas HM: Hoelderlin, Hidria Spacefolk, Herbie Hancock, Henry Cow, Hemina, Helion Prime, Hawkwind, Harmonium, Harlem River Drive, Half Past Four, Hair of the Dog, Steve Hackett, Hands, Steve Hillage, Hammer.
Nice gold nugget tonight by Ken with Michael Moorcock. Big fan of the Elric series. Just re-released the Elric Series in 3 Hardcover volumes. Never knew about the Hawkwind books. Love it Ken!
I doubt if you would get decent haggis down in London but Hillage is playing in Glasgow next March and I dare day that Steven Reid will have some spare rooms and a lift in his non burned-out car if you're keen. (That'll teach him for ignoring the many great 'H' bands out there!)
Surprised that Henry Cow received no more mentions than they did in the video. They would have been in my top 3 and I would have picked "Concerts" as Chuck did in his top three.
@@seaoftranquilityprog They are the flagship band for the "Rock In Opposition" movement. In the end it's all subjective and no doubt you know your crew. One of your panelists acknowledged he had never listened to them before!
I’m a huge Motörhead fan, but Hawkwind i never got into, so that’s the band i’m about to dive into now. I’ve always thought of them as a spaced out hippie act with no way to go. I’m looking forward to buy their 70s stuff for starters.
More than plenty 'Hs' to make this episode worthwhile. The HoFers write themselves and are recognised as such by Ken G and others (Hammill is definitely in there with the Steve Hs). I'd have Hatfield & the North, Harmonium and Henry Cow as my three other picks.
Huis, I think from Canada. Imagine late Rush, Beardfish, and a beefier version of Saga. If anyone knows how to pronounce the name, let me know lol. Maybe Hoo-ee like French or Hew-iss???
New for me: the big prize winner is Happy the Man, not because of the vocals, but otherwise terrific band. Comparing the debut album to "Crafty Hands" I actually prefer the latter. As for the band Hands, their self titled has popped up on my TH-cam feed for a long time and I finally listened; it's jaw droppingly good (in spite of the lackluster vocals!) And then you have Harmonium, where the vocals ruin the otherwise good music, and Haken, where I am not connecting with the music but I think their singer is great. Let's face it, Progressive Rock has not always featured the best choices in vocalists.
-Herbie Hancock: love Headhunters and Sextant. Need to check out more from that era. -Haken: I only know The Mountain, but it’s quite an album. -Harriet Tubman: Brandon Ross on guitar, Melvin Gibbs on bass, JT Lewis on drums. Kind of electric free jazz type stuff from late 90s and 2000s. -Dave Holland: more jazz than fusion. But his 1973 ECM album Conference of the Birds is a classic.
1.Steve Howe-Turbulence 2.Happy The Man 3.Allan Holdsworth-Metal Fatigue HM: Hands Home-The Alchemist Annie Haslam-Annie In Wonderland Jan Hammer-Oh! Yeah! However-Calling Hermetic Science Steve Hillage-Searching For The Spark(box set) Hydravion Hawkwind Hudson/Ford-Worlds Collide Hatfield and the North Steve Hackett Happy Family
Does Ken know he doesn't have to name every single band each time he talks about a genre? That being said, I have picked up a bunch a stuff I hadn't known about thanks to him (and some I wish I hadn't).
@@lasercd7851 Take it easy Ken. I realize it's all because you're an encyclopedia of this stuff. I'm sure it's tough trying to decide which bands to mention and which to leave off the list. But look at the reactions of the guys when you list a million bands (or, for that matter, when you do the hall of fame picks), even your co-presenters are rolling their eyes. I've got a LOT of great music from you, and I'm not slamming you or slighting you. For a guy that throws so many shots, you get pretty worked up when some random comment comes along (that includes compliments). I give you nothing but props along with the rest of the Prog Seat guys.
Great episode but.. how can Pete mention Herbie Hancock and then pick Hawkwind - that's like saying 'well I was gonna pick The Sex Pistols but I eventually settled on Miles Davis', just makes zero sense.
Panel 👍💯

Could you do a show on the British jazz movement that Ken mentioned? His recommendation on Halsall was spot on and I would like to hear more. Thanks!

Haikara first two albums are among the finest prog albums ever made!!!!
Shadow of the Hierophant with celestial vocals by Sally Oldfield... incredible.
Yeah. They are one of my HMs.
1) Herbie Hancock
2) Jon Hassell
3) Tim Hecker
My latter two picks are pushing it a bit with respect to fitting under the prog/fusion labels, but I think they fit within the spirit of progressive electronic generally speaking. I highly recommend Jon Hassell's "Seeing Through Sound (Pentimento Volume Two)" and Tim Hecker's "Virgins" if you're into ambient prog along the lines of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze.
My picks for H:
Hall of Fame:
Hawkwind
Peter Hammill
Steve Hackett
Favourites:
Happy The Man
Hatfield and the North
Haken
btw. looking forward to Pete's review of the new Hagma (sic) album out on 30.09 : Kartëhl (he,he)
Here are my picks in alphabetical order:
1.- Haken (Heavy Prog from the UK)-The Mountain [2013]
2.-Hardcore Anal Hydrogen [also known as HAH] (Experimental/ Math-Core/RIO from Monaco)-Hypercut [2018]
3.-High Castle Teleorkestra (Avant-Prog/Experimental Rock)-The Egg That Never Opened [2022].
High Castle 🔥 Possibly the best album of the year so far
Have you heard Keiji Haino?
@@rockonthestone4907 Yeah!, it’s really cool. If you like this style maybe you should check Darth Vegas, in particular, their album “Brainwashing for Dirty Minds” [2013] 😉👍
@@bertkarlsson1421 I came across his work because of his connection at some point with Tatsuya Yoshida. But to be honest, I haven't explored much of his discography. Any suggestions?
@@Ferion333 He have a band called Fushitsusha, their "First Live" album from 1989 is one of the best Psychedelic albums I have ever heard!
Thank you Ken! I couldn’t remember Matthew Halsall’s name, really love his music, you made my day man
My list:
1. Bo Hansson (Symphonic prog/Ambient)
2. Haikara (Eclectic prog with awesome vocals in finnish!)

4. Hawkwind
5. Hidria Spacefolk (Space)
6. Henry Cow (RIO)
7. Keiji Haino (RIO/Psych/Free Improvisation)
8. Harmonium
9. Hoelderling (Folk Prog)
Henry Cow is great, and its importance in this kind of music is massive. Have to check out some other bands on your list. Thank you man!
Hectic Watermelon - The Great American Road Trip (2004). Excellent one and done jazz fusion like The Dregs, Steve Morse & The Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Haken: The Mountain (thank you to the SoT crew)
My Top 3 - Steve Hackett, Herbie Hancock and especially Peter Hamill. His Silent Corner and the Empty Stage is a desert island disc!

Another great show gents even more to check out!
My choices:
3. Holy River Family Band - "Welcome to Riverhouse"
2. Here & Now - "Give & Take"
1. Hawkwind - "Hall of the Mountain Grill"
HMs: Haken; Harmonia; Haze; Hidria Spacefolk; High Wheel; Hoelderlin; Howth Castle; Hybrid.
By far and away, my number 1 here is Hatfield and the North. I love both albums, but probably listen to the first album the most. The flow of these albums is incredible and just speaks to me. I would also pick However, Henry Cow, Happy the Man, Helmet of Gnats and Steve Hackett.
However!!! Nice Richard, thanks for watching
My favorite three artists/bands starting with H are:
Allan Holdsworth - Metal Fatigue
Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte
Haken - The Mountain

Cool picks gentlemen. I have one that is a bit out of left field as they're not a prog band. But for one album they were very close:
Hella - There's No 666 In Outer Space (2007)
Crazy rhythms and song structures and a singer that is definitely an acquired taste, this is a melting pot of rock, prog, free jazz, noise, punk and math rock.
My 3 are in no particular order:
Hawkwind - Quark, Strangeness and Charm
Haken - Visions
Peter Hammill - Over
My HMs are:
Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte
Steve Howe - The Steve Howe Album
Steve Hillage - Green
1) Herbie Hancock - Flood (1975)
2) Terumasa Hino - Hip Seagull (1978)
3) Hiromasa Suzuki - High Flying (1976)
I've looked forward to coming up with my list ahead of the PS crew, so I can see if mine get mentioned:
3. Harmonia - Neu! and Cluster combined to form the ultimate motorik band
2. Heldon - French synth band with a dark, rock edge
1. Haken- Virus
2. Herbie Hancock- Crossings
3. Steve Hackett- Specral Mornings
HM: Happy The Man, Hatfield and the North, Alan Holdsworth, Hawkwind, Steve Hillage, Hallas.
Tough letter
1. Hawkwind
2. Hackett
3. Roy Harper
HM
Hallas
Herbie Hancock
Freddie Hubard - fusion years
Horslips
Headstone - obscure prog psyche from Ohio
Hot Tuna - yes the America choice yellow fever years
H was pretty straightforward for me, not a lot of choices.
1. Hällas - Isle of Wisdom
2. Hawkwind - Warrior On The Edge of Time
You can always reach me at info@lasercd.com

Glad to hear some love for Happy the Man and for the incredible "Sudden Dusk" album of the band However!
Among the "not mentioned" bands/artists:
1- Homunculus Res : Limiti All'Eguaglianza Della Parte Con Il Tutto (amazing italian band influenced by Canterbury.Essential if you're a Caravan/Hatfield and the North fan)
2- Holding Pattern : Breaking the Silence (cool guitar oriented fusion/prog stuff with some Happy the Man flavour)
3- Richard Henshall : The Cocoon (fantastic solo album from the leader of Haken)
A few more:
Honeyelk ( jazzy zeuhl)
Happy Family ( Japanese avant prog)
Hugh Hopper ( Canterbury jazz rock)
No Hampton Grease Band then? And saw Hawkwind 2 weeks ago at Morecambe (UK).....first saw them in '76. They were dire this time.
My top three
3. Steve Hackett
2. Headspace
1. Haken.
Love the show to death.
Excluding Steve Hackett:
Top 3 of H are:
1. Harmonium
2. Happy the Man
3 .Haken
I have the first two... didnt realise the third one had ever come out in any form - cheers!
I saw Stacia (a err dancer).. In Search of Space and Space Ritual.. Warrior on the edge of time .. all great stuff imo
1-Happy the Man
2- Haken
3-Hallas

Luis, I listened to Western Civilizations, I loved it. Reminded me of the more avant garde Zappa.

I doubt if you would get decent haggis down in London but Hillage is playing in Glasgow next March and I dare day that Steven Reid will have some spare rooms and a lift in his non burned-out car if you're keen. (That'll teach him for ignoring the many great 'H' bands out there!)
I would love to see rankning thealbums of Bo Hansson!!!!
Spirit of a salmon....right on, Luis!!
Surprised that Henry Cow received no more mentions than they did in the video. They would have been in my top 3 and I would have picked "Concerts" as Chuck did in his top three.
Henry Cow are not an easy listen for most. I'm actually not surprised at all that they barely showed up amongst the crews favorites.
I am a big fan of Hawkwind. If you like Lemmy's playing, you should maybe listen to their first album, as Lemmy was still a member then.
Space Ritual (double live album) is Motorhead meets the edge of the known universe.

Henry Cow is brilliant. And very influential to say the least! Great choice 👍

Henry Cow, Hatfield & The North, Hawkwind HM - Hamster Theater, Heilung, Roy Harper
HORSLIPS (Ireland)... HIGH WHEEL (Germany)...

More than plenty 'Hs' to make this episode worthwhile. The HoFers write themselves and are recognised as such by Ken G and others (Hammill is definitely in there with the Steve Hs). I'd have Hatfield & the North, Harmonium and Henry Cow as my three other picks.
Haggis is fantastic!
What does Luis say at 19.40? "Just be prepared to look around for any ???"
Huis, I think from Canada. Imagine late Rush, Beardfish, and a beefier version of Saga. If anyone knows how to pronounce the name, let me know lol. Maybe Hoo-ee like French or Hew-iss???
Just a thought. Why did Steve Hackett and Peter Gabriel never work together?
1. Steve Hackett
2. Allan Holdsworth

Does Ken know he doesn't have to name every single band each time he talks about a genre? That being said, I have picked up a bunch a stuff I hadn't known about thanks to him (and some I wish I hadn't).
I get paid by the minute so that’s not changing. You should fast forward through my picks. Seems to be an issue for you.

They're not in the same book, let alone on the same page. Hawkwind are very simple folks, when they play an A chord, it's an A in the bass.
