I operated one of these from 2004-09 before my company decided it was too expensive to maintain. Absolute beast of a front loader!!! One of my favorite machines to operate.
I worked for IH back from 1970-1980 in their Libertyville, Il. plant. That's where this machine was made. I helped build and kit up a few of the 400's. They made a lot of different models and I built and kitted up on most of them. It was always fun to bring one to life, tune/test it and drive it to the yard. This 400c drove and handled really smoothly for such a large loader.
Dam fine vid once again justin!! I spent a Lotta time in one of these Ole girls in the day! and the man I ran it for still owne's it to this day! She's Detroit powered tho!
I was the mechanic that maintained 14 or these machines for 10 years we had A models and C models, both with 19 yard coal buckets for handling pet coke. They ran two shifts a day. They constantly broke and kept me constantly working. We had beefed up long arms, and beefed up axle housings. I rebuilt everything from their steering, diffs, planets, rams, trans, TQ's, engines, frames, rims, cabs, brakes, etc. The A models were vastly better than the C models their 12v71 engines burned half the fuel and lasted 10 times longer and were much much cheaper to rebuild. The C models had better brakes and more power with their terrible VT1710 cummins engines.
If international would have taken many of its customers advice and input on the 400 ,it would have been the premiere big rock loader, rather than the 992C . They only needed to slow it down. It was entirely to fast in 1st gear. Had International put a larger /slower ring and pinion ratio, and added straight hydraulic wet disc brakes, this would have been an amazing machine.
I was thinking the other day wondering when you or if you would ever do a video on the old Hough's, now it's here. These were and still are a very popular loader around my area. At one time (back in the day) there was probably more Hough's than the other brands around here.

I rebuilt almost every part on these machines from their hoist rams, to their engines, transmissions, buckets, hydraulic pumps, etc. all are machines had the long arms
I don´t like when cab is on front part and I don´t know even one loader driver who likes it on front part, why. Because loading arms and bucket is allways just same way on your eyes, cannot look side of arms and bucket. Second, reverse, open space, turning wheel, turning wheel and nothing happens, before big klonk, turning was all and then you feel that it is turning.
Eagle coal an dock(centeral asphalt/w.v. paving/v.n.green co.),wv.,use to have a 400 hough on there strip mine,with a coal bucket ,they used it to load cline's in the 1970's . At 5:55 in the back ground,that looks like a 1965 GMC 5000 tandem V6 351 gas with a 5 & 4 ,when you learn to drive one of those dump trucks productively,you can say you learned something........
Hi Charles McCormic. Where was the location of the mine you worked ? I worked the area of Holden WVa. I was with Elm Coal in Ky, so I paneled to the old Rebel job. We used several Cline coal trucks . Thanks for the post you made
+ROYALTON COAL , yes they sure were fast especially in 2 Nd gear. As I recall it was only a 2 Spd. I operated one in rock loading 777 and 773 CAT trucks. Fine loader, but never turn the steering wheel unless the wheels were rolling as the rear was what did the steering. Guess you well recall that in relearning to operate after being on CAT. lol.
I ran an old Cat 966 with rear steer and no articulation, just straight steering. Took a little getting used to but you run what you have. Seems like Case had a cab forward setup like this. Good video!
Great video Justin, nice to see the old iron gets some camera time too haha. Was the transmission on this loader manual? Every lever looks like you'll have some sore arms after a hard days work! Got any idea of the operating weight? It would be interesting to see if we saw a few modern loaders with the cab on the front because of on-board back up cameras we see so often today.

Those tail wagging loaders are horrible to operate, when backing up you have to keep an eye on the rear end at all times to make sure they are pointing in the right direction, if you look away for a few seconds they end up next to the cab and you get whipped around. having the cab attached to the front end is a really bad idea.

THEY WERE A MUCH LARGER AND IN MY OPINION, A MUCH BETTER MACHINE THAN THE 992A AND B, HOWEVER, THAT ALL CHANGED WITH THE PURCHASE OF A 992C, AFTER THAT THEY ONLY BOUGHT ONE MORE. WHICH BY THIS TIME WAS THE DRESSER 570. PEICE OF JUNK. THAT ONLY FUELED THEM PURCHASING ONLY CAT MACHINERY TO THIS DAY. THEY NOW USE 993K's 777s AND 785 ROCK TRUCKS.
case had there cabs on the fornt part of the loaders to the older ones. does this machine still do work of is its workin days over and in the bone yard?
reminds me of the loader this grain elevator used to drag around a 50ft walkway out of the river.after it fell in. interesting how stout the old loader buckets looked compared to now a day stuff. looks like a mighty fine afternoon to walk around that loader
The way the cab is positioned on this type of loader, it kind of reminds me of how the Tonka front loader looks.

Oh I never fail to surprise lol. There used to be a lot of Hough's around here too. The 400's were very popular in mining.

I ran this type of loader in an underground mine at Ste Genevieve Mo. Our company has 6 of these big loaders at any one time.

I'm not really sure. I didn't look at the tires on the machine to be able to tell you
We had 4 of these ,and they were a great loader ,they just needed to be slowed down ,they were entirely to fast ,other than that ,a great machine.

Is a great machine easy for operate and repair &service i like very much than a complicated Caterpillar machine
