  • Progress update for hd sprites project. No upscaled or edited sprites. All are new from zero. This project is near to end and now is finished 90% sprites. Last three monts I did almost 20 sprites. Hope you like it.

    Wow. This is the most faithful and best HD texture pack for a game I have ever seen. Literally every detail from the original sprites is here! Don't let the negative comments get to you, you are doing a fantastic job and I guarantee this will be popular when finished.

    this is how you do an hd pack. not with lame upscales that look bad because they're not in style and over detailed, but instead just like the original at a higher resolution

    I imagine 2 complementary projects: Voxel Doom, where you can circle objects and they don't rotate view, but that project aims for a classic Doom look, "pixelated"; and this Doom HD Sprites project, that I think it would benefit of making these HD sprites but with voxels, not "pixelated", but HD voxels, if that is possible. Not a competition, just we Doom fans enjoying the love you give to the game.

      It doesn't support hd sprites, at best they would be overly large clipping through the map

    the enemies are going to look insane. i find texture filtering in doom to be awful but this looks really cool!

    Hopefully this upscale patch comes as an option on the ps network as well as the ps1 ost.
    This would look better on my 80" tv than a pixelated version. Doom 64 did a good job of this

    Those look fantastic! They look authentically like the original sprites, only with more detail. The one minor critique I have is that the display on the automap looks quite pixelated. I'd be curious about what a display showing finer detailed architectural line art would look like.

    going to user the built in texture resize in gzdoom with this because I can x6 the res of these already great looking sprites.

    Is it possible to make vector model sprites that look flawless at any distance? Even add levels of detail?

      That's a really interesting idea! Typically game assets have either been sprites made from 2D raster files, or 3D models composed from meshes made from triangles. Vector models would require being able to draw bezier curves quickly. I know from doing graphic design that you can really slow down your computer if you have a project in Illustrator that has a lot of complex vector data. There might be some opportunities for optimizing the frame buffer to quickly rasterize just a portion of the data depending on how far away the sprite is from the player.

      These pickup sprites couldnt be any more accurate to the original. Thats really magic what you did

      Only pick ups weapons are in hd. Not player weapons.

      @@yeetkid player weapons are from my other work but are upscaled not complete redone how sprite objects. After upscale are manualy edited. Are in 2x bigger rrsolution than original weapons. Download

      Why? All shapes are same how on original sprite. Maybe flames are strange because I am not good in animated flames, explosions ... But in future I will edit some sprites for better result but first I must finished whole mod. All feedbacks are welcome. Not only positive but I need know what I must change for better result.

      Why ? Nothing is wrong. Everything is how is in default doom (shapes, angles, colors, size)On moddb are some comparison screenshots and all is 1:1. Only rounded shapes on barrel and lamps are redone for better "3D look" because original is flat.

      it’s like revisiting your childhood home but like something about it is different but your brain doesn’t know what.
      It’s a good looking mod the work here is amazing it’s just my brain keeps telling me something is wrong

      @@crowbargaming9118 nothing... this is how sprites in HD looks. In low resolution are everywhere big pixels but in hd without cast shadows everything looks out of place. My sprites are ok. Some are with some changes but 99% are very close with original media.moddb.com/images/members/4/3127/3126098/profile/computer_map_comparison.png

    Nice work but remember, upscaling and making everything "HD" isn't always a good thing. Look at gta definitive edition, just makes it look like a cartoon

      Voxel doom looks good but still is very lowres. I do not see differences betveen voxels and vanilla sprites except 3D. Looks same how original in 3D but without better quality. I prefer sprites more than voxels. Monsters are relative nice but objects looks like from lego.

      @@marcelhamza9012 That's the aim of voxel doom - looking exactly like original but 3D. No matter how detailed sprites are, 3d will always be more appealing. It has 3D explosions, which is awesome. Also monster's deaths in voxels look great and you quite can't replicate that savageness with usual 3D models.

      @@misteranonimous7137 that's not criticism about voxels but I do not see many benefits changing lowres sprites for low res voxels. Someone like voxels, someone sprites but I think I did good work with sprites because I do not change shapes, colors, art, feeling... My sprites are doom sprites only in HD. If someone want play with voxels it is ok. Chello did good work but I am not the target group

      ​@@marcelhamza9012 You see, the problem is that just updating with HD takes away from Doom's charm. And it's not just a fancy word here. Because doom sprites are based on clay models, not just some digital graphics. And it's real artistic value, because even modern throwback shooters developers can't do the same with their sprite based games. And also because of that, doom's original sprites actually might be the best looking sprites ever, cause they don't have this artificial flare to them, that you get with digital artistry. So updating doom sprites is basically the same, as updating some clay animation cartoon, or even a game, like the Neverhood, with 3D graphics. Because, like, great, but it is genuinely supposed to be made from clay, not the other way around. And voxel doom is great for exactly that - it updates, but it preserves clay look as it is.

      They are different projects, I don't think that one should be better. I just like a lot that people still love Classic Doom, even with 2016, Eternal... I am a fan of Voxel Doom, but this is great work too.

      How looks HD ? Sprites are 1000-3000% in higher resolution than original sprites. how much higher resolution you need ? Looks good with or without filter.
