Have you ever heard of the "Schofield" Bible? How about the "Tyndale" Bible.
Do you know that all Bibles except the King James Bible are copyrighted? The copyrights are owned by companies and hold the specific rights to their "translations."
C I Schofield was a theologian who had a Bible printed with his personal comments printed on each page. Is that blasphemy?
Trump's version has a couple documents added, much like many Bibles who have timelines, charts, maps etc.

One of the most fundamental question I have for Christian Nationalists is, which sect of Christianity rules? Protestants have probably over 100 denominations, and Catholics is a totally different animal but much older and the original Christian sect. Are these people willing to take orders from Pope Francis?

  • @janicepalesch9221

Every word you spoke is true. I grew up in the Lutheran church in the 1950's. We never had an American flag in our church or in our Sunday School areas during that period. Churches I attended later in life did have those flags. I don't know when churches started having our nation's flag in them or why, but I do know that it was a very bad idea. Look at the crooked road that was paved with the display of our nation's flag in these places. Too many people have accepted it as a matter of course, never questioning and never imagining that the symbol might usher in evil - but they SHOULD have. German history already showed us what happens when anything religious is paired with symbols of the state. When any institution of authority, like a church, pairs any other symbol with its own, people start to believe that they are natural partners. The truth is, they are not, particularly in the age of Trump. Both the church and the state end up destroyed, but not before many lives are taken.
As an aside, I think teaching little children the song "Onward Chrsitian Soldiers", marching as to war, with the cross of Jesus going on before, in our Lutheran Sunday schools set a very bad foundation for the violence using the cross we see today. I'm sure that no one envisioned that the "war" and violence would be used to destroy a society and a nation, even individual lives, when they asked us to sing that song, but that has been the result, hasn't it?

    • @lisagulick4144
      @lisagulick4144 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Absolutely correct. C.S. Lewis (in _The Screwtape Letters_ ) called this (the linking of the faith to a cause, or a country, or a certain set of actions, or whatever) "Christianity _and."_ The minute you add anything to Jesus, you have diluted the power of the Gospel, and limited its ability to attract those who need Him. I'm not saying the Holy Spirit can't still reach them, but those unneeded additions make for a pretty big stumbling block...and you know what Jesus said about those who cause the "little ones" to stumble!

Not only does it matter what symbols we bring into the church, but the symbols we wear, and preach (via words or behaviors), watch on tv, in our music and books, etc. Look at how the German church bowed to Natzism, eventually leading people completely away from the church. Quite well shown in stories of Bonhoeffer. Thank you for raising the alarm and for continuing to highlight the narrow path-The Way!

There's a reason why Trump's co-opted bible is the King James Version. The owners of copywrites on the translations of the Bible wouldn't have their reputations sullied by signing off on such an issue. The King James is the only English translation in the public domain.

    • @davidellis4084

Nonsense. There are many translations that have passed into the public domain, from Wycliffe (predating the KJV) and Douay-Reims, to the RSV (on which any copyright has long expired) - and there are several modern translations whose translators have dedicated the copyright to the public.
Many American Evangelical denominations, however, regard the KJV as the only inerrant Word of God. Some go so far as to say that the KJV translators were inspired by the Holy Spirit to correct the errors in the Hebrew and Greek. Even though the translators said that the original sources were diligently compared, they worked primarily from the Vulgate and to a lesser extent the Septuagint. Some of the questionable translations in the KJV are quite clearly traceable to Jerome.

About twenty years ago, I and a colleague were studying in the US. He's Australian and I'm Western European. We noticed how every "Christian" Church seemed to fly the US flag on the Altar. Given that we were not "Americans", both of us found this "weird". In Australia, according to my colleague, you MIGHT, on occasions, see the Vatican flag flying (we're Catholics), but those occasions are rare. In my own country, for much of my life, there was a violent conflict going on where, as a short-hand, the denominational preferences of each side was too often used to differentiate the combatants (in reality, the conflict was far more complex than that). So, it was only on extremely rare occasions (State occasions, State funerals) that the National flag was ever allowed in Catholic Churches.
BUT, part of the architecture of Anglican Churches in the same country, literally built into the walls, were symbols of Anglicanism's utter submission to the English Royal family and the Anglican communion's complete loyalty to the English/British Imperial project. As a colleague at home put it, you "knew where their loyalty lay" - and it was neither to the Biblical Jesus or the State in which they were living....
If "American" "Christians" feel the need to display and see symbols of their loyalty to the US in the places where they assemble to "Praise and Worship God", one really needs to ask what, exactly, are they worshipping, especially when many of these denominations follow commandments "against Idolatry"?...

Hi Rev, this is unrelated, but something a Priest said, who I admire, really bugs me! At a retreat, he showed a photo of the Shroud of Turin. He pointed out the nail marks, the thorns in his head..etc, and then said, "I did that! The Nails is his hands, that was me. I'm responsible for what happened to Jesus" I understand that he was talking with a youth group, but every part of me thinks that this type of theology is just not good. What about the poor person, who has a very low self image, and they hears this..that THEY put Jesus on the cross! How can this be healthy! If you see this, any thoughts? Thx

actually: The “God Bless the USA Bible” includes the text of the King James Bible along with the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Pledge of Allegiance. It does not, however, include the 11th through 27th amendments of the Constitution, thus omitting the provisions that abolished slavery, granted the right to vote to women and Black people, and limited presidents to serving only two terms." just search "trump bible amendments" and there's lots of citations explaining what was omitted by fascists.

That is a valid point, but when do we stop following the rules of a Stone Age nomadic tribe of goat herders and start using teachings appropriate for 8B people in a high tech world? There are some great things in The Bible like "Love Thy Neighbor", but, as an example, is Leviticus relevant anymore?

I don’t belong to any religious belief or organization. But I think It must be heartbreaking for true Christians to have their cross and bible stolen by those wanting symbols to hide their sins. Is it possible to recover these stolen symbols? Or are they to forever remain in possession of political entities and special interest groups who abuse them. Losing them makes one realize how precious and important they really are, an important part of the glue that hold the group together. I do hope those thieves come to regret their theft.

The first symbol in church you think about is flags? What about that guy hanging front and center on a cross? That's pretty -edgy- thought provoking IMO. Thankfully, the Methodists had the good idea of leaving the body off the cross. My symbol is the Dawkin's "A", although he seems to be tarnishing a bit with age. You talk about reading only one chapter at time. I have two books like that you might "enjoy". "Straw Dogs" by John Gray and "In Defense of Looting: A Riotous History of Uncivil Action" by Vicky Osterweil. Andrew Seidel of the FFRF wrote a book called "The Founding Myth: Why Christian Nationalism Is Un-American" in case you're interested. Took him eight years to write.

SPEAKING OF SYMBOLS...Did you know that the original Christians NEVER placed a body upon the crosses that they depicted? This is because they knew the TRUE meaning of the crucifixion and resurrection. Most modern Christians absolutely do NOT, which is indicated by the fact that the dead body of Jesus is most always placed upon the cross! And all of this also reveals the meaning of the words of Jesus on the cross: 'MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORESAKEN ME?" I reveal the answers elsewhere. But how many of you are interested in even investigating? NOT MANY, IF ANY. You may be interested, however, once the flames of the Great Tribulation have risen high enough. And THAT is exactly why the flames must come. Elijah has returned, as prophesied, and testifies.
