  • East Lake Golf Club. Usually in the same sentence as Bobby Jones, The Tour Championship, and more recently, Tiger Woods.
Erik Anders Lang hits the historic club the week before Augusta to rediscover a place that redefined a city.
East Lake also plays an early role in Erik's golf experience, serving as host of the first PGA Tour tournament Erik ever attended - The 2010 Tour Championship.
Two years later, Erik went back to the club to interview Tom Cousins, the man behind the revitalization of East Lake.
Today, all the pieces come together as Erik shares the great story behind East Lake Golf Club.

I went to one PGA Tour Round in 2018. Sunday at East Lake. I knew Tiger could win so I flew all night with nothing but my fanny pack filled with a phone charger, car keys and binoculars. Was in the crowed chasing tiger down the 18th, saw him put out and had to book it to the Uber pick up to catch my flight home. I was the first person in the stands on the #1 tee that day and watched every shot until victory. Most fun day and experience of my life.

The beauty of East Lake Golf Club lies more than just in golf but the ever present spirit of Bob Jones. Like East Lake, Jones had to overcome his own adversity. With Jones’ fist round of golf and his last round golf being played at East Lake; both a course and a man overcoming their circumstances; both a course and a man that symbolize generosity and encouragement to others; both a course and a man that transcends the game of golf by representing the journey all golfers hope to achieve...becoming a gentleman.

The East Lake story is amazing. Right next to the course used to be the East Lake Meadows projects, & it was known locally as “Little Vietnam” because of the crime. It was the most dangerous neighborhood in Atlanta when the city near the top for murders every year. The school they built there is fantastic as well.

Another fantastic video. Thanks for taking the time to tell this great story. As someone who lives in the Atlanta area, I've seen the impact on the East Lake community that the foundation has had. I've volunteered for the Tour Championship several times and it's been amazing to see the new school go up and all of the positive changes to the community. The story of Bobby Jones has so many pieces to it (Atlanta Athletic Club, Augusta National, Peachtree Golf Club, East Lake Golf Club, just to name a few) -- it's fascinating to me.

Erik, I love your work. East Lake is an inspiration and the will to improve our surroundings should drive all of us. "Be a good steward and leave the world better than you found it" should be a guiding principle in all of us.
If you'll lend me your soapbox for a minute though, I'd like to say that your "privilege" is nothing to be ashamed of, only grateful for. As a new parent who is working his fingers to the bone to provide every advantage possible for his new son, I have a new perspective on "privilege".

Bobby Jones' other hole in one was at Augusta Country Club in 1932, I believe hole number 14. There's a plaque there says he was in a group with Fielding Wallace, and Alfred and George Bourne.
I played there last week and snapped a photo of the plaque. Spectacular course ACC has there.

    Dear Erik,
It takes a certain person to see their dream, and while life takes jabs at us and maybe tries to stall us sometimes, you eventually get there. The only things that were consistent was the vision of the dream and the movement of time. Eventually, you get there and you can take a look inward at who you have become, you can look outward and see what you have achieved. However, must importantly you look around at the people, the other human beings with aspirations of their own, and how you influenced them in either the smallest or largest of ways. This club house did to golf what you have been doing for golf. You remove the race to get better and just show the appreciation for what golf really is. Just want to say thank you for dreaming about something and making it real. Keep going!

I was raised in Decatur, GA which is about a 15-20 minute drive from this course. There are a number of golf clubs in Atlanta that were not only closed to non-whites, but they kept their membership fees so high because they knew the average middle-class person couldn't afford to play there. Charlie Yates is a course literally down the street from E. Lake GC, that the executives built to make a profit and to keep the "riff-raff" out of E. Lake. Out of all the courses I've played around the Atlanta area, Nationally, and Internationally, Charlie Yates is one of my favorites. But in the back of mind, I always lamented the history of the course. Finally, the complaints about the crime in the area are correct but blame the system that created the problem and not just the people who have had to survive in it.

It didn't save the city, but it improved the neighborhood. People lived here in the neighborhood and did just fine. Great neighbors from my recall, after living here since 1979. The East Lake Meadows housing project was a no man land from the start (1968). Now homes in the neighborhood have gone from a median price of $72,000 in 2004 to $630,000 in today's market. Why would I complain? Property taxes! They have and are pricing me out of my home! So much for affordable housing. I payed $24,900.00 in 1979 for my house.
