    UPDATE ON THIS SCHOOL: Since this video, the conditions of this school got worse, even though they used the gym for about a few games after it was abandoned, now the schools control panel got ripped out, now in a box and the system is all ripped out, where he recorded is now 10 times worse than it used to be, this school is now beyond repair.

    In my town in MI, we have several older elementary buildings erected as WPA projects (George Ganiard, and Isaac A. Fancher), and one built soon after WWI (North Kinney). These buildings are architectual gems, featuring ornate exterior carvings, Pewabic tiling and terrazzo flooring. There would be quite the rhubarb raised if
    the thought was EVEN so much as entertained, of demolishing them! Happily Fancher and Ganiard are still in active service and will be for years to come. North Kinney however was removed from active service in 2009, but it now houses the district's central offices.

    Interesting note about the meters in panels from this era: These were used for supervision of bell circuits; ranges depended on manufacturer and panel but usually went from 0 to 25, 50, or 100 mA (milliamps). Voltage would be applied in series through a resistor (in this case it looks like it's right above the meter) and a relay that would pass through all of the bells/horns and the meter. Resistor value was determined by the number of bells/horns. Ohm's Law is what we're talking about here - but with some added complications that AC brings to the table.
    The key part of the supervision system was that the coil of a relay was also included in series - when all values were correct, all bells/horns were installed and in operating condition - enough current was present to operate the relay and all was well. That current was indicated on the meter - so for example, in normal condition maybe 25 mA would be indicated - that was the total supervision current passing through all bells/horns in the system. Water, loose wires, or other partial damage would make this value increase or even vary which could be seen on the meter. Technicians experienced with the panels could probably read a lot about the status of the system simply by looking at that meter.
    The trouble bell was connected to the relay and if the circuit was cut, a bell/horn damaged, etc...the relay cut out and turned on the trouble bell.
    When the system is in alarm you see the needle jumping - this happens because bells/horns were operating in that moment. I haven't done any direct testing on a panel like this yet to find out exactly what's happening but my guess is that it's the coil of the relay(s) that operates the bells/horns themselves is being shunted into the circuit via the code wheel so that each time the mercury switch trips, that relay operates - sounds the bell/horn, and whatever current that relay draws is added to the supervisory circuit momentarily making the meter jump.
    It's a fairly complex system, especially for the era as there are no solid state electronics.. I'm basing this theory of operation solely on studying old schematics and zapping myself a few times on these old panels - it's possible I have some of the details wrong but overall I'm pretty sure that's how these panels worked in general from a supervision standpoint. Unfortunately we've arrived at a point in time when a lot of the folks that installed and serviced these panels aren't around anymore - though I bet a handful still are and perhaps some of them are around.

      Hello Brett and thank you for your wonderful, detailed explanation on the workings of this particular Autocall FACP. Your analysis is correct and one thing is for sure, they sure don't make fire alarm control panels like this anymore.

    • @brettman273
      @brettman273 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's for sure; asbestos backboards and all! I'm going to use one of those UAX panels as a guniea pig to trace out everything and fill in some of the blanks regarding supervision. I know that it works basically like I described but there are a few fuzzy areas that I should be able to clear up by physically poking around...

    i think a school like this should get someones attention to save and renovate it! unfortunately the problem is having asbestos insulated pipes is the only problem to premature death if the pipes are being messed with disturb. but on the other hand I think it would be worthwhile to make a school like this asbestos free and save it for historical landmark

    • @OldSchoolFireAlarms
      @OldSchoolFireAlarms  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      There are abatement companies that could very easily remove any asbestos that is in the building. New windows, roof, some tuck pointing work to existing masonry, new HVAC, and the building would be like new. But no, the school districts are told by construction contractors that it is cheaper to abate and tear down, then haul away the old building, and then build a brand new one. This is an absolute lie that construction companies have been telling for years so that they can pocket more money. The clueless school districts fall for it every time.

      i really enjoyed your video! i tell you what, i own a three story building built in 1926 in Cincinnati Ohio, its got original toilets from its time period, light fixtures, old school glazed bricks in the bathrooms, i did all that to bring back to its original period. unfortunately the building i own has asbestos, but again its no worries as long as its not disturbed, falling apart. the place should have been demolished, but i am so appreciated to save a 91 year old place, to make like new, but you get what you pay for to make old school like new in return when you take the time to bring old school back to life. my place is a lot like this school you showed in the video.

    This makes me curious. What happened to the school between 1930 and now? How come in 1930, the school had a lot of white details and an entire chimney, and now, it looks really dull with barely any white detailing and some of the windows are bricked up and that entire chimney is gone?

    • @OldSchoolFireAlarms
      @OldSchoolFireAlarms  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Your keen observations are correct. The school's appearance has changed over the decades. Due to normal degradation caused by aging and weather damage throughout the school's 88 years, many of the face brick had to be removed and replaced. Because of cost, they did not replace the beautiful terra-cotta tile that you mention. Instead, it was replaced with cheaper brick. In the 1970's, to conserve energy, many of the windows were also covered over with brick. This most certainly ruined the original appearance of the school, as it first looked back in 1930. The height of the chimney was also cut down after the coal burning boilers were removed and replaced with natural gas burning furnaces. Thank you for watching and your excellent observations.

    It sucks they're demolishing those great classic school buildings. My high school was built in 1969-1970, and while not as old, it's not in the best shape anymore, but there are plans to expand and renovate it, which would be almost as good as a new school, and would cost much less as well. They originally built it with a Simplex system with flush-mount 4040 horns (though in the main office there's an FCI FC-72 operating the system now, but the field house still has a Simplex 4247 panel), but if they're going to go forward with this project, it'll all probably be replaced with a new voice-evac system of some sort. Oh well, at least the kids won't get tinnitus or migraines during fire drills anymore! :P

      At my high school, they've been replaced the fire alarms. Idk what they were, but they got replaced with Gentex Commander 1s, quiet alarm. Our building isn't falling apart but it just looks old (by old I mean some of the surviving classrooms are triangles instead of rectangular ones because i guess that was a thing in '73.) But as the renovations are going on, the are slowly getting replaced with commander 3s and 4s.
      I know of another high school in the district that has gentex commander 4s (rarely you'll see a 3), and they left the old Edwards in-the-wall round adaptahorns still mounted. They don't work but they're still there.

    • @OldSchoolFireAlarms
      @OldSchoolFireAlarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reason I did not pull the rod was because the chain that was originally fastened to the manual trip bell was disconnected, therefore the bell would not have rang. So I didn't really see any reason to pull the rod down. I just simply pulled the lever on the actuation switch to set off the electric fire bells. Thanks so much for watching and for your question.

      The upper floors did not have any manual trip bells. They were removed in the 1950's when the electric Autocall bells were installed. Why the two manual trip bells on the 1st floor were kept in place we will never know.

      Great question! Everything has it's day and sooner or later something new comes along and takes its place. Pull rod fire alarms are no exception. In the not to distant future, the only place you'll be able to see pull rod fire alarms will be in museums and private collections.

    • @freddievanfleet1706
      @freddievanfleet1706 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh. I'm surprised there isn't a modern adaption. These systems, while I haven't seen one first hand, seem like they're durable. However, a modern version of these systems will most likely be plastic to "make them affordable".

    • @OldSchoolFireAlarms
      @OldSchoolFireAlarms  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only real benefit to a pull rod system is if there is a power failure. If electric or battery backup fails, a pull rod system can still be manually used to ring the trip bells that are tied to the rod.

    • @OldSchoolFireAlarms
      @OldSchoolFireAlarms  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can not wire the bell directly to an electrical outlet. This type of single stroke bell was designed to be used with a fire alarm control panel that had resistors tied to the bell circuits and a code wheel that would signal the code to the bell(s) that were wired to the panel. If you wire a plug to the bell and plug it directly into an outlet, it will burn up the solenoid coil. You can wire it to a 12 volt battery, that should work. Also, please be advised that you have a single stroke bell, not a vibrating bell.
