- I keep getting the same question over and over again on my channel. What do you think of Serpentza? Rather than simply watching some of his videos and giving my opinion I thought I would see if he would answer some questions? To my surprise he got back to me right away and said sure why not. This is a two part video this one and next weeks are both about my Q&A with Winston or Serpentza the South African TH-camr Vlogger from Shenzhen, China.

Watching this video now, two years later from when this video was released and looking at the man SerpentZA has become, man he changed soooooo much. It's kinda ironic that the man who started it all, the vlogging, China youtube stuff became the man we see today.

For those people who are saying Winston has changed: He hasn’t, he’s more experienced now and understand negative sides of China better than any foreigner! i’ve been in China and i had great memories of my times there but what he says is truth too! his videos are 80% positive about China and Chinese people! let’s be fair!
I unsubbed from his channel because he kept bashing China yet he chose to stay there. I don't know what he's up to these days though. _I hope he's doing fine regardless..._

Serpentza每个月大约做3个视频（最近平均值），按照一个视频放2个广告算（实际可能还有多）。每个视频平均浏览量90k上下，x3=270k浏览量，广告触发点6个，按照油管给出的广告费标准平均每1k浏览量带来3-5美元收益（触发几率的不同+用广告牌屏蔽器的浏览量不计在内两个因素带来的差异），他一个月做视频的广告收入即1620-2850之间，取中间值2235。再加上Advchina的广告收入（假设是对半分，计算方法同上）那么他一个月收入往最少了说也有3.5k美金左右，往多算就是4-5k，这收入折成人民币，2.2w，放在中国这个物价环境下不算低，但也算不上很高，所以他绞尽脑汁地做不客观的视频抹黑中国，赚个半高不高的工资，还要背负那么多骂名，感觉他活的挺可怜的
Your calculation of his income is only for one channel, don`t forget he gets income from at least 3 channels, his own personal one, ADVChina, and his wife`s channel. And all the patreon income he gets from his followers. And he doesn`t pay tax. So I`d say it`s pretty lucrative business.

双方都比较偏见，要按这个事实来判断出你观看的媒体把谁写得漂漂亮亮，并进行分析，多看几个视频，几篇文章，把真相弄出来。

I have to say folks I have never seen so much haters in one place. I deleted a bunch and left a some but still most of the comments sounded like they came from a bunch of grade school kids attempting to cyber bully another person. I am sincerely disappointed that this came out on my channel. Chinese sticking up for China? I doubt it more like a bunch of insecure children or adults that think it is OK to act like children. I'm sure your parents would be proud of you. I know for a fact that my Chinese family would be embarrassed to the extreme if anyone in our family acted as the commenters on this video. Shows all Chinese are not the same some, were brought up with no manners and no self control. Thanks for tarnishing my thoughts about the Chinese people.
For as much as the Chinese Nationalists hate SerpentZA they sure do love watching every video about him, leaving negative comments about him and telling him to leave China. Winston calls out the nationalists in some of his videos and tells them that they just leave a bad impression to the outside world and don't help further the cause of China being a great place like Winston constantly says.

@Matt's Saltwater Fishing lolll Winston is the source of distorting reality and blacking Chinese image. If he can delete his ultra anti-Chinese videos (probably 50+%) from his channels, then there will be no Chinese commenters even bother to point out his other lies and logic fallacies. If he can do that, TH-cam will become a cleaner, more sincere place for our Chinese viewers.

What he has been doing is not something to be proud of. He's been taking advantage of China's difficult circumstances and used it to make money. This so called skill could not be repeated with success with other country or on the average country therefore it's not skill, but opportunist.
What they have been doing is equavalent to making videos on American obeseity rate, but the worst part is in the disinformation in how they paint the story giving people the impression that obesity is the result of gluttonous culture. Than make more videos on how people love guns and add disinformation painting people as, out of control crazy hillbillies. Than make more videos on Delhi's Holi festival and bring up sexual harrassment and assault, than adding disinformation giving people the impression that India's population is so high because they are sexual fiends. Than make videos that Indians don't just stop with women but continue with child marriage having the highest rate in the world and add disinformation giving people the impression that the population rate is spiralling out of control as a result of this.
If you want me to reinteprete his videos, I can show you how big of a difference his views and the real picture will be. As I've commented at another video of yours. Him and laowhy are atleast ignorant of Chinese culture or intentionally giving people a distorted picture of Chinese which then would be outright immoral.
I am a subscriber of the three of you plus Jayou nation out of Shanghai. I am from Michigan and I too have lived and worked in Shanghai. I am back in the States for a break but I do not like what I see in the States. So many stores have closed their doors for good and crime has gotten out of hand. I live in Shenzhen , China for two years. I have nothing but positive things to say about China. Yes, I am Chinese American and I speak the Chinese Language. Thank you gentleman for painting a true reality of living in China for people to see. I hope I will have the chance to return to China soon. Meanwhile, keep up the good work.

Have no idea why there is so much hate against Serpentza. Myself I see his videos talking about both the good and the bad about China - he seems to love China in many ways, and critique other parts (which obviously is something one should be able to do). To be honest, the fact that so many people (especially Chinese) feel so bad about him makes me think more poorly about China and Chinese culture than I ever did watching his videos..
Sad to see one can not critique even the slightest things about that country without being hated so broadly by the Chinese community.
I totally agree with your views on Serpentza, he critiques the way he sees it both good and bad. Sad to say that he is misinterpreted by some Chinese who tend to be a bit myopic, triumphalistic and also lack objectivity. Basically they don't like it when foreigners criticize their country as they feel threatened by it, yet know that they are not perfect either. They sorta feel that they are the only ones who have the right to criticize their own. But part of the reasons against criticism on him is really the work of hidden government trolls who are manipulating sentiments to achieve their propaganda goals making it difficult to filter out the truth sometimes.
He can criticize for sure, he cant criticize all the time, on all subjects, and pretend to be objective. Rats and roaches choose the darkness, why? SerpentZA, you know the answer.

I used to enjoy some of Winston's earlier videos about how to use Chinese money and get around by subway. However, I noticed after his first marriage failed, Winston became a bit more negative as far as his videos were concerned. I feel that his opinions may be due to his feeling of being displaced from his home of South Africa and his failures in China. If you look at some of his videos, he will keep a pillow with the Union Jack on it as opposed to the South African flag. The writing is on his couch.:) I think if he went to the USA or Canada, he might be happier.

I think it took a lot of courage for Winston to talk about the obvious, especially when talking about the obvious was politically unpopular in China. I imagine Winston had many silent Chinese admirers. The one thing that was never mentioned is that Winston and Mathew helped boost the admiration for China in the West. People outside of China can identify with those same problems and appreciate a truthful approach rather than a smiley face painted by nationalistic public relations.
Their opinions are biased and just tell Westerners what they would like to hear to lure money. People should come and see real China.

First time watching this vid. I have viewed several of SerpentZA's videos and having been to China and studied Chinese history/culture as well have been married to a Chinese woman SerpentZA is simply telling it as it is. I'm amazed that so many overlook his balance of the positive and negative aspects of China presented in his vids as there are in any country. Obviously, the haters simply focus on the negative due to to a nationalistic or ignorant bias.

He is enjoying his life as he goes along. That’s his life. Good.
I believe that Serpentza has a lot to offer other than just the entertainment value. His technical skills in filming are some of the best I’ve seen. His camera work is excellent as is his awareness of lighting and sound. A lot of people (some that he has worked with) have unsteady footage that makes me dizzy and unable to watch their content. His speech skills are brilliant in that he is concise, to the point. Then there’s the content. It’s well planned and executed. There is an obvious improvement from his first videos. I also admire his willingness to promote others. That’s why I watch his channel. He strikes me as the sort of person that you’d want to sit down and have a drink or share a meal with.

With all due respect, the haters and bullies (as you labeled them) didn't all of a sudden sprawled all at once. They commented on this video because they all recognized that Serpentza is selling hate (and no government except China will tolerant it). People respected your opinion and your viewpoint because you are not bias. And your intention is not evil.
Don't know how many Serpentza's videos have you watched. Any Chinese with an above average education can see through the hatred and bitterness he has towards China. That is not healthy for China.
Here is a summary of Serpentza message:
- I like China and I have many Chinese friends
- My wife is Chinese therefore you must not say I don't like China
- Many foreigners loved China when they first came here
- But you will eventually find many things inferior about China
(and he will purposefully open as many cans of worms as he can find and pour them in front of the camera )
---> Therefore if you as a foreigner lives here long enough you will hate China
(plus a few subtle insults attached to prove how China, and the Chinese people, not living up to his standard).
Serpentza has great instinct to captivate the masses and knows how to crank up his British charm to manipulate his audience. History proved that such character selling hate in disguise of justice can definitely generate phenomenal popularity. Does that remind you of someone from Germany just a few decades ago?
Have you ever received so many hates from your other videos before you put Serpoentza in it? You can certainly do whatever you want. China is not as oppressive as it is portrayed by the Western mainstream media. But just think about that.

I don't really like serpentza or laowhy86's videos.The topics they have covered are quite shallow?Or their opinions/content are quite shallow. I think Gweilo has more critical thinking and analysis behind the topics. He has a bigger picture of China. Sometimes I even feel misrepresented by Laowhy86's wife. Sure, it's her real story, but I just don't wanna be represented and generalized for good or bad things.

I watched several episodes of his videos. I started because I thought this guy was criticizing China with some real issues. BUT, turns out he exaggerated about a lot of things. Some content even was not true at all.
I quit his videos. He needs to learn to respect the truth and think in the way that local people do in order to genuinely understand their life, how and why.
I've seen almost all of Winston's videos and I must honestly say that before I never would have thought about China as a holiday destination, but serpentZA's videos got me excited about the place. Before China was just closer and less foreign than the moon to me, but Winston made it real. Also, how could it be a bad thing to warn visitors about people who could try to scam you out of money. We get a lot of that in my country too, but I know how to handle is, because I live here. If I ever set foot in China, and I hope it is within the next year or two, I would love to drink in and enjoy every minute. It would be brilliant if anybody could have warned you about any pitfalls to avoid. That way you would leave at the end with a positive feeling about a country where you won't be able to understand a word for your entire visit. Go Winston and all foreigners that wants to make us westeners understand what's it all about. Keep up the good work!

Serpenza, a TH-camr makes money by condemnIng China in every possible way. He is pretty good at feeding his audience with provoking anti-China content and tittles, mixed with facts, lies and mostly bias. That’s why he is hated by the Chinese and I think he even enjoys that as it makes him popular. In my eyes, he is pathetic and deserves no respect. Why? No Integrity.

Cindy Wu. Your assessment of him is correct. I am from Scotland in the UK. I live in China and I respect China and the Chinese people. Yes there are things I don’t like about things that happen in China but I keep quiet about it because it’s not my country. There are things I hate and despise about my own country and some of the Scottish people. What I’m trying to say is all countries have good and bad people, all countries have things that happen that are bad and good. What is sad about Serpenza is that he comes from one of the poorest countries in the world. The violence, the poverty, the crimes in his home country are horrendous. What’s even sadder about him is that he makes money out of his experience of living in China. He could not have done this by staying in the shithole that is South Africa. The white man in South Africa is a nobody, serpenza is a nobody. He begs on TH-cam for money . I hate that he speak bad of China and the Chinese people. I wish the government in China would ban him from your beautiful country.

For example, why do you make it look like the government has been sending agents following you? You might want to show that Chinese are curious and like to stare, but at least one of your viewers left you message stating that you had been followed and monitored, my understanding is that you deliberately make it fuzzy and could be interpreted either ways, you never corrected that commenter. That's what I called " subtle and concealed ways" in bashing China, both you and Laowhy86 are very good at that, that's why I suspect you two are trained and not an average youtube.

How can "western reporters in China" "always" "boast about how easy to hook up with local girls or involve in bad mouthing China govt, its political system and leaders, or Chinese people" if that will cause them to have overstayed there welcome? Most journalists are never expelled from China, and are welcome over and over at the visa office (despite -- according to you -- "always" doing these above mentioned things)

As an expat I can tell you that I am very proud of Winston. I only discovered his channel recently and In a way our stories are quiet simular, I left SA in 2000, and have been living in Brazil ever since. I had to learn a new language at the age of 30, I opened a business with my wife, and became a father all at the same time, so I know what its like. Respect to all my fellow South Africans who have achieved success outside of our country, because lets face it, there is very little opportunity for white South Africans in SA. Politicas has destroyed our country, and I have to be honest, I love Brazil more that South Africa. 😇😇😇

I have no problem with serpentza. Why is it so hard to accept that someone living in such a crowded, pressurised society can have a negative view of some aspects of the country and its people ? He speaks the language and he's lived in China for a considerable amount of time - doesnt make him Xi Jinping but I'm willing to bet that he has a better feel for the country than many of his haters. He does seem a bit paranoid at times, but not without precedent : if that doesnt line up with your experience, great - you're not paranoid if they ARE out to get you ;)
I enjoyed your video very much. I liked the way you asked questions to Winston and the way he responded. Good job Mr. Gweilo 6. I also want to comment on what you said about going back to Canada or the States. I am from the USA and I live in Nanning and Qingdao for about 6 years.
I love China and now I am back in the States and I feel like I don't belong here either. I miss China very much. I mean I love my country but now that I am retired my income is just enough to support me. But, in China I lived like a king on my income. Everything was a lot cheaper and I was treated well by the Chinese people. Anyway, keep up your good work on the videos you are shooting. Can't wait to see another one.

The Chinese society is so tolerant for Winston. I was wondering what would he be like if he did the same thing in South Africa or the US.
You guys are both great, both trying to talk about your own perspective and experience. China is a huge country having her own greatness and to catch up. Chinese people are fast learning folks. Just give it time. Even before dawn is the darkest hour. Illness may getting worse before full recovery. China is not an immigrant country. People need to be curious about, need to resist, neen to learn about and accept foreigners. I've been in America for 2 years, Germany 1 year, Singapore 1 year. They all got their own serious issues. There are no perfect country.

He loves China, he' shares the good and bad, fairly transparent, intelligent. He says things I like and things I don't, and I like that. The truth is I have very little space in my life for anger and hate. Even when someone is negative to me personally. Life has been a struggle for me and I have banished things in my life that disrupt my peace and harmony. Its not easy to do to find you're self. Now I try to understand positive and negative differences in people and life. And if it is too much for me I don't give it attention, cut it from my life. Bless from Canada.
Serpentza and laowhy86 has proved they have freedom of speech in China and how tolerant mainland Chinese are. If in other asian countries they would've been kicked out long time ago.
Still, there is no freedom of speech on politics. But generally speaking, Chinese are tolerate regarding the criticisms about our culture or nation, though this quality is more and more rare to find. It's hard to see whether it's a good or bad thing, being confident is nice, but over-confident or narcissistic? Certainly no good.
@@qiukezhong3452 being open to criticism is so different from tolerating whatever BS coming from random uncaring people just bc they are white. Plus, for cultural issues, there rarely is any objective standard. So it's already very open for us to accept all the criticism back then. I've met up with Winston several times and he is the real deal, but as with everything in life, change is inevitable. He is not the same young man he was when he arrived and struggled to learn and survive.
For those who are critical of him, you are being unfair. It is a struggle for a foreigner in China (as it is with any foreigner in a new land and even more so when he first arrived compared to those who arrive today) and just because he is venting or critiquing something in China does not mean he hates China or Chinese. I am Chinese people but I study and work in Sweden. I have been Sweden more than 10 years. But I am not real know the Swedish culture and life. If somebody want to ask me how feeling in Sweden, I can just talk something about my view. It is like, I think Swedish people is good looking, Swedish life is so boring, I can't find something make me happy in Sweden. But if you want to ask me some detail question in Sweden, I can't answer. Because I really don't know Sweden. That is like some TH-camr from other country. They don't really understand China. I agree. I used to watched his videos and kinda like him. But one day he said he quit his job and he would put more time to TH-cam videos since It's his only income.And from that day, his uploaded videos more frequently and the title were more shocking like a clickbait. He changed...I stopped watching.

Excellent video, this is the first video I have seen of yours and you did a great job asking questions and SerpentZA was a great sport about answering them. I think some people misunderstand SerpentZA sometimes. He constantly tells people what he loves about China, how he loves China, etc but when he says 1 bad thing about China for example spitting then people come out of the woodwork and tell him if he doesn't like China then get out. SerpentZA just points out what he does not like or disagrees with sometimes to inform unsuspecting people that visit China so they aren't surprised when they visit Beijing and it has a air pollution.
Oh boy a lot has happened since this video was uploaded a year and a half ago. Now Winston is on a nonstop hate train with Matt Tye. Just looking at the recommended videos to the right, I see one titled "Go to Vietnam, NOT China!" from the duo. Real classy clickbait nonsense these guys are now peddling.
SerpentZA has discovered that HATE sells and that's all he promotes. He is an awful hypocrite. Now he is a visa overstayer in the US. He criticizes Chinese women for going to the US for birth tourism and his wife is exactly doing the same thing.
I often dream about being back in the UK and the focus and urgency seems to be on getting back to Thailand, where I have made a life.

At the end of the day, Serpentza is just catering to his audience who are mostly foriengers and who are only there to hear bad things about China to make them feel better, morally superior, basically as if doing heroin to get high. If you want to grow your audience as fast as SpZ does or like Uncensored China does, you need to start saying bad stuff about China. At the end of the day, most foreign TH-camrs in China have a foreign audience and some overseas Chinese and some local Chinese who uses VPNs. Most of your white or foreign audience are here to hear bad stuff about China and if you are not giving them those, they will unsubscribe and hate, just like if their cocaine doesn't get them there fast or hit them strong enough, they will stop buying them next time. Some people bash and smear China in a more subtle and sophisticated way, and some use pure lies and some use plain language. No matter how they vary in delivery method, the shipping address is always the same, bashing Chinese to feel morally supeiror when in fact it is just the opposite. So far your videos have been very objective and i don't see you transition to become like them, but that is also why ur audience is small. So you can either be yourself or be just like rest of them.

serpentza is ok. he has his opinions in(2019) Hongkong but nothing radical, I can still see that recognizes China has the moral upper hand. overall hes fine and is doing a good job portraying china from a foreign perspective.
