    My apologies to Gweilo60. I let off a barrage of unfair epithet directed towards him this morning after watching his 2-part video in which he advocated that the subject of this video was "a good guy - I'm giving him the thumbs up" which outraged me. I was wrong, of course, as I didn't realise the video was an old one from 3 years back. It's quite reassuring to note Gweilo60 has since said, with the benefit of the passage of time, that this "good guy" is actually "a piece of shit". Thanks Gweilo60, I've resubscribed to your channel.

    I liked Serpentza before. Then, I found him just ok. Eventually, I now find him quite intolerable. His motivations for making videos have changed dramatically the past 1-2 years. Now he is just in it to make money, and he has concluded that making videos that (directly or indirectly) bash China, and whine about people's negative reactions to him, is the way to attract views and clicks. He may very well be right. But he has lost a viewer from me. It is possible that he was corrupted by that yank pal of his.

    I have been watching serpentza for a while and a relatively new subscriber to your channel. I think his early videos are more relaxed and mostly helpful to travelers, and is mostly about China as he experienced. But the past few years he became more and more opinionated and recently started talking about things like animal cruelty, etc. I don't know it's the influence of his American friends or it is about pleasing American audience, but the altitude like "I don't eat pet animals and you do, so you should change" is kind of arrogant (I don't know he realized it or not), so the success of his channel (and the fact he quit his job so youtube became his only source of income) I think did change him.
    I wouldn't go so far as saying he is purposely trashing China, but he has been living in China for more than 10 years and experienced the rapid and significant changes in Chinese economy and social fabric, mostly for the better, but he complained more than before. It does seem he is dissatisfied, maybe because of his visa situations or maybe he did not feel like fitting in due to the Chinese version of xenophobia (he is always regarded as foreigner because he does not look like Chinese).

    • @shihaiwei5738
      @shihaiwei5738 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +David Brown, That is another example of arrogant attitude, that we accept immigrants and you don't so you should change. But clearly you hate China and Chinese in general and your xenophobia is more obvious and much more disgusting.

    • @shihaiwei5738
      @shihaiwei5738 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +David Brown, WOW, racist visa policy? Exactly which races are targeted? Does China grant long term visas for Chinese Americans? No! You really think US gets to decide the immigration policy of other countries? Whatever US does other countries must follow suit? Just how arrogant are you?
      Saying China is "uncivilized", that is looking down on the whole of Chinese people, and you think people would believe you don't hate Chinese? I think you are a racist and that is why you are quick at pointing fingers at others. Seeing how stupid and ignorant you are, I will ignore you from now on.

    Serpentza's opinions are always subjective, but he tries hard to make people to believe he is objective. That's the annoying part, no matter when he is saying something good or bad. I personally think that the gradual passive hate, the don'tcare attitude, pretentiousness and love-china-as-a-business of people like serpentza/laowhy86/prozzie are because they eventually figure out that they could never be part of china and that the so called interest and respect from the locals is not because they are good for something but just that Chinese are always kind to foreigners. The sense of being surrounded are long gone and what is replaced is that dull noise of living daily life. That is why they constantly wanting to patronize the Chinese, even though most of their audience are non-Chinese. they want a sense of relevance but most Chinese just don't like to be patronized and worst yet, don't think they have in-depth thinking, experience, knowledge and wisdom to patronize others. that is why they made so many "investigative/exploring" videos to try to hide the facts that they are normal guys with very little really content in them. And they know it too. The reality is that most people know that they are just small town kids pretending what they are not.
    On the other hand, Gweilo 60 is just a retired man trying to enjoy life in a different park/garden called China. He is not here to preach. He is not here to break into Chinese-ness. He does not come here with the attitude that I am from a developed country so I am entitled to be the smart and opinionated one and should get all the attention. And I don't get it I will make a lot of noise to get it. He is just here to enjoy life.
    Different people so different responses.

      JK, your observation of all these White Vlog Characters, so true. Before Gweilo 60 met his Chinese wife he too had the typical mentality of China and Chinese people as molded by their MSM over the years. When they move to a country, first they act like tourists, and then pretending they are just having short stay with "teaching jobs" and eventually try to preach others with their superior thinking and in-depth knowledge and wisdom. AND THEY ARE JUST NORMAL GUYS FROM SMALL TOWNS. Hello! If these people are a professor with extensive knowledge in subject matter, I think they have something real to say. But if they are stuffing content with "common perception" and "basic Wikipedia level content regurgitation", at least admit it. East Asian hosts are so gracious and peace loving that westerners embark on a huge ego trip, when they stay in those countries for a while. With all that attention, and a new-found feeling of superiority, they suddenly become someone, whereas back home they blend humdrum into a sea of the masses, and are rarely noticed. So it’s really important to get a grip...and to take the opportunity to embrace some of the humility and generosity that one encounters in those cultures everyday.

    Bro, u seem Star struck.... n by a youtuber😂. No matter what Winston said, they were just the perfect answer n each answer somehow qualified him as a good guy???!!! What was he suppose to do? Act like an ass knowing you were making a video of him? Seemed like your agenda was to go out n make a positive video of him. If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were hired by his handlers to start a image building campaign for him! I think the only conclusion you can make from your interview is that,” it went well and uneventfully.”
    You’re still aiight though, but these 2 videos proved nothing. I tend to agree that he probably is not a bad guy, though. When I say bad, I just mean an evil guy. but a decent guy can still have serious character flaws. His flaws are that he tends to disrespect, quick to turn real but casual observations into incorrect n much bigger conclusions, feels he’s much more significant and knowledgeable that he actually is, and is very much a bit “glass hearted”( in his words). Any you tuber getting $ for what is essentially an unskilled job should thank God and just be happy for any attention and $ he gets! He should expect backlash whenever he puts himself out there with proclamations that are often inaccurate, and especially when he tends to extrapolate these incorrect assumptions into some much bigger national or racial attributes!
    A perfect example was him talking about the recycle trash bin mixed with other trash. That was a correct observation and woulda been an awesome video to bring social issues to the limelight, but he just had to mess it up by taking a strange turn and authoritatively conclude that it was an exclusively Chinese issue bc Chinese liked to show face. That dude’s world experience is too limited and what little exposures he’s had were obviously blinded by his preprogrammed perspectives. Just walk around any park in the US n take a look to see what’s in the recycle trash bins before making such a authoritative and misleading assumption, Winston. And that was just one of many many videos he made which started with solid observations but finished with bizarre conclusions.
    Maybe you’re right that it’s not his fault. Maybe he is the product of where he grew up. But to have to say that just means you’re looking for excuses, reasons to explain something that needs excusing, explaining....

He is an observer and tries to interpret what he sees. There are only reflections and the very process he engages in is worth the time listening to. Maybe you should ask: Would I drink a beer with this guy?

    Hi, you are right because you are a nice and kind person and he is an absolutely smart intelligent liar!! I was fooled by him, and I believe he has a big team with him. In most of his videos, I used to click “Like”, but only one video in which he describing Chinese schools are spy, I made my genuine common, but he blocked me and lied to me that he didn’t. My comment is listed below:
    --- Hi Dear Serpentza, why did you block my honest comment?? --- if you don't like my opinion, I apologize:
    “ I love your video, but, for this episode, I have to raise my disagreement. I studied Chinese in Confucius Institute, the staffs are nice, and they never sale any views other than the scope of language and culture learning to me, to public, to media, and to anyone else I know. They are different from the political organizations as you mentioned. You misled public with comparing an education institute and political organizations on purpose. I am reasonably convinced that you are provoking dissension between Western world and China. I hope the communication and understanding with Chinese should be deepened, that’s the only way to put the hostility down. That’s why I have been learning Chinese hard. ”
    He replied: “ I didn’t block your comment but this (Chinese) soft power nonsense has to stop, I’m not misleading anyone and neither are you ”
    I replied to him: “ However, indeed, it is blocked ! if you didn’t, it could be your team member! I like to have a reason as you claim all the time you like to have different opinion, I do not know how much you respect the freedom of voice. You may not agree with my view, but you should let people read and judge it. I have being your subscriber for long time, but I feel been cheated and hurt. The screenshot will be shared in my ins & fb if this mistake could not be solved. ”

    He's not a bad guy. In general, foreigners experience China differently than a native Chinese, kind of like how a white person would see America different than a Chinese. Since he doesn't have that connection with the country like many native-born Chinese would. It is likely that because China is so "plugged-in" as a nation but not so much on the world stage (the citizens aren't), he would feel some level of frustration about some aspects of life and be ignorant about others (case and point, he wouldn't feel as danger from gangsters that are connected with pick-pockets, but his coworkers might.)
    Besides, he has a Chinese wife! That should say something!

    Winston makes videos on the topic of China with a mix of objective facts and his personal subjective opinions. Naturally, when discussing a country of any size, broad generalizations are necessary. He would of course understand that everyone is different and that there are exceptions to every observation. It takes courage to express his own opinions online to 300k+ people and I respect him for that. There is a difference between disliking something and spreading hate. He never encourages any sort of hatred, whereas the majority of the comments here spreads a distasteful personal characterizations of a person they never met. I do not always agree with his opinions, but what he did was spark my interest for a country I knew little about. I've now lived in China for 2 years and enjoying my life to the fullest, much thanks to his videos!

    There are a lot of nice guys that have stupid points of view. Those two are not mutually exclusive. So setting aside of what kind of person he really is, what that serpentza dude does is, however, simply catering his audience. As Chinese really don't contribute too much towards his click or income for what matters, he learned a trick or two from his besty ADVchina and makes his livelihood by bad mouthing China. We get it. It's not personal. At the same time though, one cannot blame people for feeling outrageous from those hostile words.
    But my question really, is why the hell you, Gweilo, want any piece of this?

    but, by the way he is "exposing" the bad things lead me to feel that deep down in his heart he just want the ppl in china (mainland) to be a better human tomorrow.

In countries allow different views, we are used to this, thinking it is fun to hear different voices. But in China, any negative opinion may often be considered as "dis-respect or dislike". I believe Winston didn't mean to hurt Chinese people's feeling, he is just young, dare to talk about his personal experiences.

Intentional negative aspects of China by searching for all the "Dirty Dustbins" there to increase his Western Viewers, that means income from TH-cam. A well dressed young man, smooth talker, no proper work, typical arrogant white supremacist, depending on his Chinese wife's salary. In China such a despicable person is called, "eat soft rice". The only fking reason a white guy criticizing China is to find moral superior and reinforcement to his preinstalled beliefs that China is shyt. Cause all of sudden China got so much stronger and richer and advanced, but my mom and dad and everyone told China is shyt and Communism is supposed to be poor ass fks, and they are supposed to be 3rd country forever, why are they where they are now, I can't believe it ?.So save the BS to yourself...and go fix racism, fake democracy, police brutality, inner cities, huge debts, welfare abuse, crumbling infrastructure, constant at war government, huge military spending and 0 civil spending, libtards, snowflake, mass shootings, school shootings, refugees, deportations, and those common shitty problems of ur collective West.. I can go on with the list, but i am tired.... fking hypocrite..
      By the way, u wanna criticize China for a better China, go fking learn Chinese and make ur voice heard on Chinese social platform, and make positive changes.... i doubt u give a shyt abt it and fk off....

    Professor, I get your messages! A resume of what i've heard from these 2 episodes. 1) Serpentza does videos for a living, you do videos for fun (by the way it was funny the description of having a old classic car in the garage for fun, and so true!!). 2)Videos of serpentza are pretty much scripted, and your videos are not scripted with words to words, because you've said in the video, you say whatever comes out from your head. Now is what I think, serpenzta only talks about controversial topics, because that's what viewers wants to hear, and that creates these online fights, the more comments he gets the more attention he attracts, and of course, more💲💲 he gets. That's the fundamental reason of why he only makes those kind of videos. And you, professor, you don't make videos for a living, you don't need controversial topics to drag attractions, instead I can see how you are enjoying your surroundings and expressing what you are feeling at the moment. It's comfortable to watch your videos, because it's not only negative credits like serpenztas'. (By the way, I would not mind if sometimes you talk about what China or Chinese people should improve, you will have my support, I am sure you can be objective, you are a smart guy who knows how to speak smoothly), no wonder why your way of talking sounds so comfortable, so you were an agent for clients for many years!!! 😊

    I think he is just kinda outdated. A lot of videos he made aren't reflecting the daily life of average Chinese. He is too old to explain what's going on in China, such as fashion trend, way of living, sport industry, entertainment industry and so on, but he isn't that old enough to offer any wisdom here. He is going down now because he kinda traps in his own mindset, unlike some other newest youtubers in China.
