The new MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay is one tasty delay / echo pedal. Guitarists who have been missing the warm, thick sounds of 70's bucket-brigade delay pedals will be delighted by the MXR Carbon Copy. The purely analog signal path preserves the warm and smooth tonal qualities and lets you get everything from short, sweet slapback echo to 600 milliseconds of cavernous, ghostly delays. The controls are quite basic. Even the most blockheaded guitar monkey should be able to figure the MXR Carbon Copy Delay out. Knobs controls are for Delay Time, Wet/Dry Mix, and Repeats. There is also a modulation button on top to add some shimmering, modulated goodness. Two internal trim pots control the width and rate of the aforementioned modulation. This is a great feature that really kicks this little echo pedal up a notch on the "lush-o-meter".
Other features of the Carbon Copy include a smart looking sparkle forest green finish, beautiful blue LED, and 9V battery or AC Adapter operation. Dig it... - เพลง
I L-O-V-E this pedal. It has become an essential part of my sound. Warm, deep, lush delay. VERY quiet too. If you're a fan of David Gilmour sounding delay then this is your pedal.
I got the Carbon Copy, in part, due to this review. Now that I have it I find its a superb tutorial. Thanks a lot, and keep up the good work.
I highly recommend this delay!! Just bought it today, and the sound is just spacious and gorgeous on the longer settings! It has the most sublime decay of any analog unit three times its price. It's an incredible addition to my pedalboard, and doesn't take up much real estate. Dream-like delay for real.
Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I love simplicity!
Will this pedal make me play as good as you
It's the other way around. The older videos may not have links or prices. Although this description has been updated it may take time to change over 1000 video descriptions. Thanks,
PGS
i use this thing for slap back and its awesome. I love how the repeats are muffled or "warm" sounding.
Andy is rolling up the feedback to the max and by that he's making the repeats infinite, and when the pedal is set to a very short delay time the repeats are closer to each other and then this metallic kind of sound is made.
Great pedal; love it, really covers a lot of ground and nails the early U2 sound. Awesome demo, as always.
It sounds really good with lead distortion. No need for the maxon, this pedal is amazing.
THANKS PGS!!!! YOU GUYS HELPED ME MAKE UP MY MIND ON BUYING AN ANALOG DELAY PEDAL!!!!!!!!!!!!! MXR CARBON COPY IS SUPER AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
MXR used to make an analog delay a while back. it had basically the same features and controls, but in a larger box (about the size of the original stereo chorus). they discontinued it for some reason, and now they made a new one with the modulation built in to resemble tape flutter from old tape echoes like the Roland Space Echo.
I tried this out today when I was shopping for a new delay pedal. I ended up with the TC Electronic Flashback. I did however have tons of fun making dubstep with it. Near the beginning when he turned the regeneration up and the delay down is how you start and then just mess with it. It's fun!
Thanks for posting this. I'm gonna snag one of these. Excellent demo!!
We would recommend the Malekko Ekko 616mkII. It's easily our favorite analog delay at the shop and does some fantastic slapback. Thanks,
PGS
I've had one for perhaps a year now and I absolutely live on this pedal...VERY cool and lots of very useful sounds. I wil say though its worth getting a power-source because after only a couple sessions the repeats start to get weaker until the end of the battery's life when almost no repeats are left. With constant mains power you get the same tone every time...worth a few bucks!
Those oscillations are SWEET!
You're the best. Thnx for this review & explaining everything! You convinced me, I'll buy one next thing in the morning :D
So far, the best demo out there! I have this pedal & now I finally know what sounds I can dial in. Great video & a great pedal.
Rawk ON!
my friend who i jam with has this pedal. its amazing. it has a very warm sound and you could do alot with it if you know what your doing. if your looking for a an analog delay this is perfect, you wont regret it :D
amazing sound!
great review and great playing.
Ths pedal is absolutely incredible!
Hey Andy! You and Gearmanndude are responsible for most of my pedal addiction =)
This is when I'm grateful for working at Guitar Center where I got this thing for $80 :)
Love it!
I sold my Ibanez DE-7 because i thought i didn't need a delay. Then i tried this one! It is soo good. The modulation makes it very nice and warm sounding.
Just picked up this pedal with the MXR Phase 90 - playing with a 62 Jaguar reissue and Orange Amp. They pedals are awesome!
How does this thing behave in front of the amp, a cranked JMP 50w marshall to be exact? Any info?
this is just a great pedal. it is an essential in my sound arsenal, and it should be in anyones.
You really can't beat this analog delay for the price! And I'd trust MXR over EH for reliability. Nice demo guys!
the construction of this pedal allows me to use my toes to adjust the pedal while im playing. cause some crazy oscillations n stuff without having to take my hands off my guitar. i love it!!!
i've heard this pedal in person, it is so clean and pristine it's unreal
thank you so much pro guitar shot for doing these reviews!
On new delay demos, it'd be cool to have him demo it in a solo situation. Crank some gain and do the best dang Gilmouresque ripping possible.
I bought this pedal a month ago and it was one of the best investments ever for my sound.. I am a tone freak, all tube analog, PRS guitar etc.. This gives me the best tone for the amount of money and sounds better than any delay pedal i have ever heard. I tried the maxxon but this was far better.. the modulation option is great as well..
The only drawback is no option for an expression pedal to control the delay time in a live situation.. Other than that A great pedal!
Any pedals can be used on anything. Bass or guitar, or keyboard, drums, vocals. For bass you just need to make sure that the pedal retains your low end. Most pedals don't. Thats why Bassists love the EH metal muff because it retains alot of lowend.
DAMN! 2:05! PGS IS AMAAAZING! They make every pedal sound amazing!
Would you recommend this or the memory man? I'm looking for a nice echo/delay but I'm not really much about digital stuff.
i got it today that pedal is awesome!!!
A BBD (bucket brigade device) is a series of capacitors, which pass the signal like a little chinese bucket brigade used to pass water to fight fires before hoses. Sounds funny, but that's the truth.
@HandreyAlex That depends on how important modulation is to you.
If you want the sea sick vibrato sounds to make your repeats just a tad more interesting, the memory boy is for you, and if you want more of a clean, crisp repeat where modulation that leans more towards tape is an option, go for the Carbon Copy.
You have two different kinds of delay in two different boxes.
Fantastic Demo. Wish I could play like you. I have this pedal and I would never ever part with it. Analog is so worth the price. It's also the best looking effects pedal on the planet imo. Beware though, those blue lights are BRIGHT.
The end of Van Halens ERUPTION at 5.58
I love this pedal. My favority pedal with my Ds-2
love your reviews really pro
I got this pedal. at first i thought the repeats were gonna be too dark. but when you play this thing in real life the repeats sound great. i notice when i plug this pedal to a power supply, turn it on and let it warm up for about 10 minutes, it actually sounds better.
Sounds you could get some amazing clash sounds on this
I have my EH Dlx. Mem. Man for quite some time now, and I expect it to live happily without any problems...
Great pedal though, and the quality of the demo is, as always, terrific! Yhanks once again... ;-)
i used to have one of these, my friend traded me his stupid line6 echo park for it. i regret it completely. i then sold it. now i have a tc elec. nova delay. im getting ready to buy another one of these to go with my nova. this is the best sounding analog delay ive ever heard. i cannot wait to own one again!
Great review as always....
Just ordered one from Pro Guitar Shop on Ebay.
Thanks again.
I would try swapping the order of pedals and turn down your repeats.
PGS
How do you put the Malekko Ekko 616mkII against the Way Huge Aquapuss or Supapuss for rockabilly slapback?
That's a combination of two things:
1) excessive (infinite) regeneration, which acts like feedback and causes the delay line to overdrive, and
2) manipulating the repeat rate, which is like changing speed on a tape recorder; the repeats go up and down in pitch as well as rate, so if you start with a slow rate, decreasing the rate results in a proportional increase in pitch, and vice versa. On these delay units that pitch change can span several octaves.
2:06 yeee
Alex Lifeson used a Roland Space Echo quite often up through Signals, later he used digital delay rackmounts.
Just ordered one, it hits me in a few days. Can't freakin wait man. Just wondering what it sounds like with distortion from a head
Just received mine from GPS!....What an awesome pedal!
Man i'm usually a metal/rock person but that reggae was absolutely awesome
It looks like a very unique pedal.
this thing is sweet. does all the delays i need. its real laid back. its no memory man, but for 150 bucks its pretty decent . I got mine brand new for 97 bucks.
I like to play atmostpheric, spacey-like sounds in my songs, and I saw that you guys did reviews of the carbon copy and the electroharmonix stereo delay with hazarai- which one would you recommend for me?
really nice!
5:16 reminds me of another brick in the wall and just made my mind up on getting this pedal
yes it is mxr makes a lot of good stuff like there phase 90 and there flanger and their distortions are nice to
i just got this in the mail 3 hours ago and am still playing it to this point .. im loving this delay pedal and the best part is True BYPASS, it is NOT a tone sucker. i love the delay and the modulation is a great extra mod to the pedal ..BUY IT!!
i have this pedal best delay pedal period. perfect for david Gilmore delay tones. i play modern metal. been playing for nearly 20 years
not sure if this has been asked but are u running the pedal in front of the amp or in the fx loop? i like my delay to be post amp and am thinking of buying one of these babies for my rig... thanks
@ProGuitarShopDemos what would be the best delay pedal for some of the older EVH stuff like b4 the 1984 album. If not what would be a good one?
man i love the spacey part off at 5:15
hey, can I put this thing in front of an amp? I know regularly delays sound badly while plugged in front instead of an fx loop, but I'm searching for a possible solution of adding a delay to a Tiny Terror, which is one hell of the amp, but it doesn't have an fx loop :( and delay and reverb recommendations for that?
2:08 through 2:39 is awsome i love that reggae ish sound
Is there away to tap the tempo with your foot on this pedal? Or have the ability to buy some sort of separate button to attach to do this?
Is it safe to run in front of amp with multiple pedals? I don't really wanna run it into the FX loop but some people say delay in front of amp is bad for your pedals.
Is there any way to get this to "loop" a short passage similar to the boss delays? thru the regen dial, maybe?
rly
which delay pedal would get best use for me playing lots of diffrent styles, the MXE carbon or the boss DD im not really sure what gives each one its edge.
How do you compare this pedal to the moog 104m analog delay, tone wise?
Please does someone know, if i want to play "david gilmour" which delay pedal would fit me better??
Can someone help me ? When i put the Delay knob all the way down i got a big noise coming out.
bought it yesterday.
love it!
@Comocks set the delay time to a short setting, and turn the feedback down so that you only get one repeat. turn the mix up so that it's about as loud as your dry signal. the delayed note should fit exactly in between each note that you play.
i believe buckethead uses digital delay though.
hey pgs, can I run this at 18v? I know dunlop only wants you to do 9v but can it handle it?
wait, there isn't a volume knob? so if i were gonna play like a loud live show, would it be too quiet, and if i were to play it in my bedroom, would it be too heavy. I'm looking for a nice delay pedal, for kind of in the background sounds for my solos. i want it kinda quieter.
This pedal is now back in stock and shipping immediately. $145 shipped in the USA.
Thanks,
ProGuitarShop*com
When you disengage the delay, does it cut off your delay tails? I hate that in a delay, that's why I use a Digidelay.
is this suited to a particular type of music, eg blues country or soft rock, or would it matter, ive never played with a delay and i play mainly metal but id like to play it with a little distortion thru it
I've never used pedals before.
do they all need to be looped or just plugged straight into the amp?
I love mine with pedal steel!
does it sound good for playing rock solo's and other songs with distortion ?
for example Alive - Pearl jam ?
does this work with lead distortion sounds or do i have to get a maxon?
The unmodulated demo doesn't sound a million miles away from my MN3005 DM 2.
This new generation of MXR stuff is really, really good. You should do a demo of the M159 stereo tremolo - an beautiful pedal.
does it have a trail? when you turn off the pedal will the delay still goes on/? thanks
@ohnoitshoward I think the mix control on this pedal is like a "Level" control- how loud the delayed notes are.
this is a great analog delay. good for slap back. peace out.
@ProGuitarShopDemos Does almost any delay pedal get that feedback? If so, could i get that with my Danelectro 600ms delay?
Is this what I could use to get that sound lindsey buckingham gets on dreams? If not how would i go about doing that?
what other effect does Page use on dazed and confused other than delay?
@carlmagnus9 There is no delay on that solo. There are just two guitars playing towards the end of the solo.
Hey guys, do you know what Buckethead does to get the delay effect in Big Sur Moon?
Well, what do you want in a delay?
Analog warmth or pristine clarity? Analog and digital delays each have their applications, but what suits your style?
@Overture2152 Well the first thing would make sure it's after any distortion pedals.. or in your effects loop.
it would also be good to have a more subtle delay sound 1/3 mix or 10 o'clock on the mix dial. go from there.
works for me anyway with delay
which pedal has better tone and is more versatile?
the carbon copy or the EH memory toy?
