The cost of a new LCP Max, a higher capacity extended magazine, upgraded trigger shoe w/springs, upgraded take-down pin, aftermarket sights, and a better recoil spring and guide rod adds up to well over $500. I'm a 15 year gunsmith and a 23 year design engineer. I had the opportunity to put my hands on a brand new LCP Max and evaluate it in great detail.
The recoil spring seat is in fact made of aluminum. This is a big NO NO. It's also a way to cut down on material cost. I venture to say they went cheap on this particular component due to the lower pressures produced by the .380 cartridge. The factory sights that come on a LCP Max are not regulated. This is why MANY owners complain of shots hitting low. The LCP Max has a black oxide finish because it's a very cost effective (cheap) finishing process. Black oxide treatments require an after-finish treatment of oil, wax, or paint in order to be effective. This is why many LCP Max owners complain of rust quickly forming on their pistols.
It's a cheaply made pocket gun that relies on quantity rather than quality. The S&W Bodyguard 2.0 is superior in many ways. The Armornite finish is both internal and external. It changes (for the better) the metal's properties and is MUCH MUCH more durable than black oxide treatments. The striker fire mechanism is a very well proven system. The grip angle and rear tang allow for the hand to get high and tight up into the pistol. S&W actually designed the sights to be fast acquisition with combat accuracy and they're properly regulated. The brand new facility in which the Bodyguard 2.0 is made has all brand new machinery and tooling with impressive quality control protocols. S&W put in a very significant investment to bring their new .380 to market and they'll probably sell a ton of them. I am not brand loyal. If it's good, it's good. If it's bad, it's bad. The Bodyguard 2.0 is vastly superior to the LCP Max in all facets.

Yeah, I love my LCP MAX ELITE, but it comes with one mag, and I bought a Galloway recoil spring, then an MCarbo recoil rod, Spring Kit, Trigger...it's great, but the mag-bases rattle, and I have friends whose guns drop mags while shooting (my first one did, but not the Elite). But mine has been reliable.
That said, I don't like anything about it better than the BG 2.0 except maybe the mag-release doesn't stick out as much, and the rear sight notch isn't too wide (but the front sight is a little wide for the size of the rear). The BG 2.0 is just comically thin and shoots so flat and soft.

So I have the Ruger Max with all the MCarbo springs and trigger, and it shoots fantastic. I also bought the Bodyguard 2,0 and took both to the range for comparison. After firing only 54 rounds through the Bodyguard 2.0, I had 4 light strikes, where it left a dimple on the primer, and never fired. The first time this happened, I placed the round back in the mag and it fired. The second time this happened, it took 3 tries to cook it off. I let my friend try it, and on his eighth round, it didn't fire. I placed the unfired round in the Ruger Max, and it fired. Taking the gun home, I cleaned it and placed a .380 laser training cartridge in the Bodyguard 2.0 and it never activated the laser cartridge. Thinking maybe the batteries were dead, I placed it in the Max and it worked as it should. I then extended the firing pin out of the slide of the 2.0, then out of the Max, and it appeared to me there was more firing pin showing out of the Max than the 2.0. The Bodyguard is now in Springfield Mass with a 6-8 week turn around for my failure to fire/light strike issues. The Ruger Max with the MCarbo upgrades eats everything that goes through it. I'll have to see how SW deals with my issue.

I’ll have to agree with the other comments. I purchased the bodyguard couple days ago and was able to go out and shoot it today. It is by far a superior weapon to the LCP max. The trigger is better. It shoots much flatter and it has much less recoil. All the things that they are saying about is completely true. One more thing is you don’t need to buy a bunch of accessories to make the new bodyguard shoot better. The grip is already amazing. It comes with two magazines one 10 and one 12 round and a really good trigger. So you don’t need to modify it to make it a better shooting gun. Just pay your 400 bananas and move on.

Love my LCP MAX!! This has been my edc for the most part since i purchased it over a year ago. It shot great out of the box nice and smooth and for me very accurate, and I love how small it is. I put 200 rounds thru my LCP Max right out of the box at my first range day and now I have approx 400 rounds or so thru it with no issues at all w/various types of ammo and I just love this gun!!!!!!!!, I don't carry guns on me unless I put 200 rounds thru them. It came with the Hogue grip already on it except my Hogue grip is different from yours my has the nub in the center and it fits my hand like a glove. I put Galloway Precisions $30 flat trigger on it and their outer recoil spring for $10 and now it shoots even more smoother. I like the bigger trigger guard on the LCP Max, makes it very easy to get my fingers in there w/o any issues when wearing gloves, especially my thick motorcycle gloves. I saw the comparison between the SW BG 2.0 and the LCP Max and the SW is significantly larger in size and the SW BG trigger guard is smaller then the LCP Max which makes a big difference for me when it comes to concealed carry. The Ruger LCP Max is a terrific choice plus its alot less expensive you can pick one up for in the mid $200 range. I'll stick with my LCP Max, if I do choose to buy the SW BG 2.0 380 it'll be to have another pocket rocket gun or another placement gun in 380. U can't go wrong with either the LCP Max or the SW BG 2.0. Hell buy them both if u have the cash, carry one in the pocket and one on your side. Thanks for clarifying and giving some love to a great gun my friend stay safe out there and ignore all the haters.

  • @SamFugarino

I have both. One thing I hear a lot of people saying is that the MAX feels cheap. That's nonsense. The one thing that makes it feel cheap is that twang you get when you dry fire it. I think the stock LCP Max sights are better than the BG 2.0 sights. Also, the trigger safety on the BG 2.0 seems flimsy. Hopefully, there will be a 3rd party solution. Where the BG 2.0 shines is how it fits in your hand. You get a better grip and the gun is more controllable. Honestly, the BG 2.0 does feel slightly better made, but only marginally. Oh, I do have the Galloway Precision short stroke trigger, Talon grips, and MCarbo stainless steel guide rod on my LCP Max. Those upgrades cost around $50, so the prices are really close. But, you have to buy a 12 round mag for the MAX. The BG 2.0 comes with one. The main reason I bought the BG 2.0 is that it you can get it with a thumb safety. I have a tough time pocket carrying with a round chambered when there is no thumb safety. All said though, my MAX is sweet. Love it.

I bought a bodyguard 2.0 today and it was well worth it. The ergonomics are so much better for controlling recoil. You are able to hold it up higher and you have a longer grip for larger hands. Small guns in general are snappy and the bodyguard 2.0 is a gamechanger. On the other hand, the Ruger LCP max has a bulky slide that keep your grip hold lower which makes the pivot point lower, hence more recoil.

  • @jscampz
    @jscampz 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

I’m trading mine in because I’ve had three LCP Max’s experience catastrophic failure below 1000 rounds. The problem is inherent in the design - the recoil spring seat is (poorly, inconsistently) machined out of aluminum, and at high round counts it will cave in, leading to the recoil spring sitting inside the trigger mechanism. This is an extremely dangerous firearm and I’m surprised a recall hasn’t been issued. And to clarify, I’ve had this exact failure three times, each time has required a complete replacement, so another transfer fee, waiting period, etc. I’ve had it happen on bone stock, and fully Mcarbo’d out ones - no matter what, they’re ticking time bombs and cannot match the longevity of a pistol like the Bodyguard 2.0 simply because it has a steel takedown lever, which is where the recoil spring seats.

I really wanted to like mine, I have tons of holsters, magazines, I’ve installed every upgrade they make - I’ve shot classes and competitions with them, and they just can’t handle the abuse that I think is necessary to vet a carry gun and train with it. Also, the final replacement they sent me has a recoil lug seat at least 2mm thicker than the previous two guns, so they’re either aware of it or their QC and milling is just all over the place. It’s really unfortunate because I love the damn thing, and I do agree with you that there’s minimal return in upgrading if you already have one, but that’s argument is made assuming that the guns themselves are safe.

You do a disservice to people by swaying them away from purchasing this gun. I carried the original Ruger LCP for a while and then upgraded to the LCP II and then the LCP Max. I really like the Max, but I've always had a problem with the snap and the short grip. I got a Bodyguard 2.0 last week, and saw the light. It feels absolutely perfect in my hand, something no LCP could ever claim to do. Also, it is quite shootable. Very comfortable and accurate with low recoil and muzzle rise. I've gone from 10" groups at 7yds with my LCP Max to 4" groups with my Bodyguard 2.0. It's like comparing Porsche and Pontiac. One thing I do like better about the LCP Max is the ease of loading the magazines. The Bodyguard's are tough to top off, even with a loader. Supposedly that abates with use, but we'll see.

I would actually agree with this, if not for my LCP Max having a failure to fire on the first round in a simulated defensive use scenario (straight out of my pocket at the range). The Bodyguard is simply a much higher quality tool. I loved the Max and probably shot it better than the Bodyguard tbh, but I trust the S&W way more than the Ruger (lots of dust collects in that internal hammer area on the Ruger). Fit and finish is far and away superior on the S&W. The Max honestly just feels like a cheap toy compared to the S&W. I encourage anyone who regularly pocket carries the Max to upgrade.

How much did you spend on your Frankenstein LCP max? You’re going on and on about all the changes you made to make the max, a better max; but is it better than the BG2? I had the original BG (6+1), then I bought the max because of the 12+1 capacity. They both shot like shit, but the max allowed me 6 xtra chances to hit my target. Yesterday I picked up my BG2, haven’t shot it yet; but it feels great in my hand compared to the other two. My hand guns are for my protection, and I upgrade when I find something that will possibly increase my chances of survival against a threat and decrease the chances of shooting an innocent bystander. The original BG and LCP max are better than nothing. I’m a 62 yr old retired veteran with above average accuracy. This is your life we’re talking about, and you’re willing to carry a subpar pistol when there maybe something better; ?. I’m taking my BG2 to the range this weekend, will give you an honest comparison review of the two. I paid $425 for my BG2 and they gave me 20 rounds of defense ammo. I’m really curious as to the price total of your upgrades.

Imma have to say negative on this.
Bought the max yesterday, not knowing the bodyguard 2.0 was a thing, I watched at least 5 videos on pocket pistols and LCP max was the only one that had a 10rd mag (let alone a 12). (Side note, when I loaded the mags they were very stiff, expected, but when I put them in and racked the slide, it was catching the barrel, when releasing the slide I’d have to give it a push forward to be able to shoot) Now these videos must have been 3+ months old because after I bought it and was otw to my range I happen to find 2 videos within this month (end of August 24’) stating the new bodyguard 2.0 is the cremè de le cremè of pocket pistols. Same capacity (10+1 making it second of the pocket pistols apparently) but comes w a secondary 12rd. So they don’t make you buy a $30+ 12rd. after. Videos also stated less recoil felt, better ergonomics and not a hammer fired. Needless to say I was debating my purchase already. To make matters worse I got to the range and saw they have both the Max and the BG 2.0 for rental.
I walked into the range a loaded 5rd mags until I put 100 through the LCP Max. Even w the 5 the slide would catch if I was racking by hand. If I hit the slide release it was fine. I then decided to rent the BG 2.0 put 5 shots through that and immediately regretted my purchase.
Looking to sell my LCP Max. But after I send this I’m putting in a buy order for the 2.0, it’s just that much better all around.

I get if you have one to upgrade did that with mcarbo and Galloway precision still not that good. If you would like a better alternative for Ruger and stay in 380 go with security 380. Don't know how many times I have had to deal with the rust issue on my Max. Never had an Issue with my Bodyguard 9mm 2.0. I only have about 150 rounds through the S&W so far and I was shooting it along side the Max. Seen a lot of issues on various guns when people start adding after market parts. I did the same thing about 8 months ago to my lcp max, they now have model specific hogue grip , I used the 18400 model before it was avail and it has the extra girth and padding at the dovetail ( I boiled some water in microwave and then let the grip sit in for few minutes then just worked it on) , it was my first attempt at gun smiting and took a bit but was successful wiht help of the videos stopped and starting. I also added the Pearce pinky extensor on my 10 round mags ( zero change to concealability ) but that plus the hogue my hand fits perfectly .. I also added the galloway mag realize spring to decrease the chance of mag releasing during shooting ( happened initially more from lack of experience as new shooter) bit now the mag is secure and really snaps in . th rocket locker from vedder is my go to and now it has adjustable retention and worth the thumb ext and curved bottom it is perfect and disengages in pocket by just pushing off not having to pull out with tongue thing against pocket . I think all in on the mods less then 150 all in . was able to shoot my buddies lcp max all orig back to back after I did the changes and it was a world of diff and so much so that my buddy said I don't want to shoot mine again until you do the same to mine ... done in half the time as learning curve lol ..
I am sure the new bodyguard is a major step forward as all new firearms are , but with what I have invested and the 8 extra mags I have for the range days to shoot more rounds in less time so I can concentrate on technique more than reloading . plus I am in a 10 round state so they are not avail yet , I also only carry my 380 in the rare days of the summer when it is hot and humid otherwise I carry AIWB micro 9's .
with all that said if I were to start out and purchase it would prob be the newest and shiny bodyguard but since im invested and love my ruger now like you do, I will keep for a bit as there are other minor 9 im trying to secure and one im waiting for to come out..

Also have the bodyguard 2.0 and had the original. The fit and finish is 100% better. Bore axis allows a much better grip. Advising people to add aftermarket parts to improve this and possibly cause issues is bad info. With upgrades this is still a loose pistol with a poor finish and tolerances. It filled a niche. Ruger will drop the price to keep them selling. It is not on the same level. I am not a S&W fanboi. They destroyed a revolver I sent in for repair by cracking the frame. I just call it as I see it from experience. Ruger also replaces my magazines and slide and barrel on the max because of issues. I have had issues with both companies. I think people that buy the S&W Bodyguard 2.0 will be purchasing it for a couple different reasons such as ergos (everyone's hands are different) Looks (It looks like a S&W Shield/M&P), the standard grip gives just a little more front strap length than the LCP MAX and the length of the trigger stroke appears to be shorter on the S&W. All of that being said if you already have and shoot the LCP MAX well there's probably not a reason to buy the S&W.
