Good to have you back with another top class episode! Dansevise is such an original and well crafted song. It also had a sophisticated feel about it I think. The performance was fautless both in singing and playing. It makes me think of theme music for tv shows like The Pretenders, The Saint, The Champions etc . In that sense it was a step closer to what was happening on the 60s music scene , rather than the older style ballads that were a big feature of the contest back then. Despite not being able to crack the Eurovision, Ronnie Carroll had a good career with plenty of TV appearences. He was quite a comedian and loved to tell stories. One of which involved cheeky details of how he got caught out in the garden of a Nurses' Hostel ( no men allowed) late at night with a nurse he was dating, which I could not possibly write about here - sorry. He had that way of making himself the target of his own jokes. He used to ring in to the chat shows on the local London Radio Stations often even in retirement and give his opinion on everything. I am not surprised he stood for parliament as I think he would have found that a great laugh.
It’s funny that Monica Zetterlund got 0 points, even after her passing she was huge in Sweden. She even had a movie made of her. There’s also a new artist that sounds just like her called Monica Mac, combining her sound with Fleetwood Mac haha!
I've been looking for content like this for ages. Wonderful channel!!! Thank you very much for this channel. I hope it will become more and more popular. The ESC channels on YT lack facts and knowledge, and there is too much emotion and excitement. Your channel fills that gap. You have a very nice voice and speak English clearly and calmly. I love trivia from the old ESCs. I can't wait for the other episodes. I hope you don't lose your enthusiasm!
Elle était si jolie was a banger in France. I mean it's a classic French music now. Nana Mouskouri and Françoise Hardy are really famous too. Thanks to speak about Eurovision before 2000.
Thank you for the video! Yes, it's my favourite ESC from 60s, this edition is literally made for my romantic soul 😊. I honestly like every single song that year (especially France, Finland, Switzerland, Monaco and Denmark) and the whole production clearly was so modern and contemporary for the time. Dansevise is a timeless song indeed, it sounds fresh even after 60 years! Still the best Danish winner for me.
ah, you skipped the best part: France refused to organize due to expenses, 2nd runner-up Monaco did the same,3rd runner-up Luxembourg also said NO, now the best part is Yugoslavia wanted to host, but Eurovision wasn't really amused by the idea of holding contest in the communistic country, BBC was not in the mood but that's why they organized in the studio.
Sad to say but I think this video is the prime example to present to my relatives telling me that everything was better in the earlier days of eurovision. You have here patterns you also got today. However, good video :)
Just when I thought I knew enough facts about ESC history of scandals, I found out about this one only yesterday. Honestly, whatever Norway's jury did that evening, I think Denmark was the right choice. The winning songs of the previous 2 years were French ballads. Three in a row would have been too much.
Like many others, I agree that Dansevise is a timeless classic and certainly one of my favourite winners (my favourites over many years are not always the actual winners and so I am used to such disappointments and can empathise with Switzerland this year: favouritism in Eurovision? Surely not 😁). How this winning song can still sound so fresh and contemporary still amazes me. Ah the good old days of making sure the votes were given out correctly certainly made for some entertaining evenings and probably was the reason some watched (I know my dear mum always used to chuckle at the mix-ups and clarifications needed). I believe the Swiss singer went on to have a worldwide hit later on with 'Cinderella Rockafella' (not sure if that is the right title, but I remember singing along in my youth on holiday one year when that song was played incessantly).
@eurovisionhistories I love the research you do into the singers so it's not just a recap, but a more detailed picture of the eurovision scene at the time. Despite the jury 'controversy', I think the best song won. Others were either too similar in melody, or too sexist for my liking. 😅 Shame for what happened to the Yugoslavian singer, but not the first nor the last time when a government was sharpening stakes for an artist 😕
Yes well when you think of it the Italian song was a bit sexist but I guess it was the earlier version of 'Mambo nr. 5' a man having many girls on his mind. Also Emilio Pericoli sang 'quando quando quando' Italian version which was an international hit sung by many artists ever since.
There are sources in the internet which say that Nana Mouskouri has sold more than 250 million copies of her albums worldwide. Some even say 300 million. If this is so, that makes her the best selling female singer of all time. People say that because she didn't do very well in the U.S.A. her numbers were not properly taken into account, short of. Or something like that ...
She was huge in Latin America. The problem is that in Latin America her sales numbers cannot be verified because of the way record labels worked. Also, she had quite the success in Canada especially in the Francophone areas
Thanks for this interesting video. I'm wondering how you will illustrate 1964. The capture was lost, wasn't it ? Also habe ich eine kleine Frage... Wie heisst du ? On ne connaît même pas ton prénom. 😊
Tolles Video, vielen Dank, wirklich interessant l
This is one of the most professionally tv produced contests in the early years (pre 1970s). And the winner is a timeless song.
That was a year with some classy songs! Dansevise is one of the best songs of the old era.

Thanks for the additional baclground. That is really, really interesting. Ronnie Carroll seems to have been a hoot ;)
I feel sorry for Monica Z who came last in 1963. "En gång i Stockholm" ("Once in Stockholm") is such a beautiful song.
Anita Thallaug's grandson Rasmus (under the name Rasmus Thall) competed in Melodi Grand Prix 2023 - 60 years after she competed.
Monica Zetterlund was a HUGE star in Sweden, our biggest ever Jazz singer. She and her songs are immortal in Sweden.
this is one you don't have to watch for us. it is really a joy to see this one entirely!
"She was so pretty" (France) - such a lovely song !
It’s funny that Monica Zetterlund got 0 points, even after her passing she was huge in Sweden. She even had a movie made of her. There’s also a new artist that sounds just like her called Monica Mac, combining her sound with Fleetwood Mac haha!
Evidently, if you don’t make it internationally, you can still benefit from remaining HUGE nationally
It’s a song competition, not about the singer. However Monica Z. was an amazing singer!

Ooh thank you so much 🥰 Its a lot of work (and fun) and reading nice comments like this really helps staying motivated

I look forward to when you review 1968! I just love our entry from that year 😆
Which country are you from?
@@eurovisionhistories three crowns, the two colors, the word for ”majesty” in that language. Take a guess 😄

True. It was nice to have a bit of variety

I love this series ❤

I'd guess EH would use available photos and footage from national finals.
@@Ri_F I think Gigliola Cinquetti's final performance was recorded.
Working on it ;)
There are lots of interesting stories in 1964 so it will still be interesting
