Hi, I have been living in Kazakhstan for a few months and as a foreigner, I agree with most of the thesis. The funniest was for me when a lot of Kazakh told me that it was clearly visible that I was a foreigner. When I asked why they said, "because you are smiling too much" :D Maybe a bit exaggerated in emphasizing safety in this video. I've never met any unpleasant or dangerous situation either in Almaty or in Aktau.
I am Serbian, my wife is Russian from Almaty. We live in the USA. I love Almaty and I love Kazakhstan. I felt at home every time I visited. Great city, great country. It was also easier for me to communicate because Russian and Serbian are both Slavic languages.

A clarification coming from the Kazakhstani constitution: Kazakh is the state language, Russian is a co-official language as it enjoys official status together with Kazakh, but it’s not a state language. But I understand it’s a very sensitive issue. Few if no (ethnic) Kazakhs would ever say “I don’t speak Kazakh”, even if it would be true. Many people will say you that they speak both Kazakh and Russian, with the latter as a second language. Some will switch to English if they see that you are a foreigner. But, as a whole, if you speak Russian you’ll definitely need it, and if you learn Kazakh they will appreciate it. And I agree, saying that “Kazakhstan was a Russian colony”, let alone “is”, is a no-no: better to say “Kazakhstan was part of the Soviet Union”. And about current political events, while being mindful that the country needs to keep good relations with its neighbours while at the same time staying out of any conflict affecting them (so don’t judge them), it is better to be mindful that Kazakhstan, even more than Russia, is not a country where people like to discuss political or geopolitical issues, especially with strangers.
Funny thing is that I was very surprised when I came to Almaty from Saint-Petersburg (Russia) 2 years ago and saw dozens of snogging couples on the benches all around the city (sometimes even in winter). In Saint-Petersburg this king of affection demonstration is not that common (although the society is much less conservative in general).

As someone thinking about traveling to Kazakhstan, these videos make me not want to visit. It seems everything will make me sick or will end with Kazakh men being "aggressive".
I was recently in Almaty and my mom is also vegetarian. Yes, there were a few vegetarian dishes but I think you will not find any vegetarian restaurants. Around the Zenkov's Cathedral are a lot of good restaurants.
What about dogs? I have seen a few videos of Astana, but I don't see anybody walking their dog. Do people have dogs, can you walk them everywhere? Nice job by the way, your uploads are very informative and the country looks amazing.

Yes I agre, I don't like when people express their private feelings on buses, trains etc. That is exactly something private and that should be kept private. Also people that use their smile as some kind of weapon. It feels dishonest and strange. Smile should be spontaneous and be done together with others.

So, as an American in Joe Bidens progressive administration these are some things they want for America. I'm not knocking Kazakhstan or it's people,we do what we were taught growing up. But here in America we show affection in public, we smile whenever we want to it's a part of being free as an American and a way to meet new people,strike up conversation etc. Russians in particular have always been viewed as robots and void of feelings by Americans because they show no affection and don't smile etc. Granted , your average person in America doesn't walk around grinning from ear to ear but most are cordial when around other people. As an American, I find this concept of no affection or smiling in public odd,, and to me is the constant reminder of what communism is about ....robots and everyone being the same. I hope one day the youth of Kazakhstan changes this , it would be the best thing they could do to say.....We Are Not Russian !! And have their own Identity as a nation.

Astana in particular has a lot of zones where people walking dogs, we actually have a lot of alleys and parks.
