I'm beating every game i used to play as a kid as well. It's great fun, because as a kid i wasn't able to speak English yet, so sometimes it is just a matter of reading the text properly, or understanding what i used to do wrong. But as much as i love R-Type, it is one of my favorite franchises, i have only beaten the first two (and R-Types on PsX) and the last two so far.
R-Type is great, although Super R-Type was kind of the lesser one in my opinion. The best R-Type on SNES is R-Type III without a doubt, but it was very obscure at the time. R-Type I & II are classics in either rendition, the Playstation era R-Type's took it further, but my favorite R-Type games are R-Type Tactics I & II on PSP. They are Turn Based Strategy instead of Shoot 'em up.
MetalSmasherGaming I love both of those games. Lightening Force (TF4) is my fav shmup ever. Genesis has so many, TF3, Hellfire, Gaiares, Insector X, Bio Hazzard Battle, Air Buster, Arrow Flash, Wings of Wor, Whip Rush, etc...

If you want to continue your shoot 'em up spree, I recommend Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie for the SNES/Super Famicom.

I've never understood the appeal of shooters. They're so repetitive and monotonous.
