"R-Types" on Ps1 is a nice rendition of the classics too btw, and R-Type Delta was the next step into 3D, which R-Type Final continued on Ps2. Still i think you would like R-Type Tactics/Command, it's not Arcade style at all, but Turn Based Strategy, but you get to play with most of the R-Type Final ships, plus you finally get to play as the Bydo, too.
Play Lost Vikings one day? I think that would be a really cool stream to watch. Loved that game as a child & im surprised you or James have never mentioned it to my knowledge
I'm also a huge 80's/90's arcade fan. On the PS4 store you can find many original arcades versions. Just (R-) type "ACA" for Neo Geo Classics or "Arcade Archives" for classic arcades. Playing "Ninja Warriors" in a wide screen (instead of a three monitor arcade machine) is priceless. And they are so cheap. Also for PS2 there are many 1:1 arcade compilations (Capcom, SNK, Midway...)
To rate my R-Type favorites: Arcade styled: 1 - R-Type 2 - R-Type II 3 - R-Type III(only because it did not come out on GameBoy) 4 - Super R-Type 5 - R-Type LEO 3D styled: 1 - R-Type Tactics II 2 - R-Type Tactics 3 - R-Type Delta 4 - R-Type Final 5 - Dimensions (unplayed)
Original arcade Magic Sword and Final Fight are available on PS360, with online multiplayer and leaderboards etc. They come together, like a double 'A' sided single, for those old enough to know what the hell I'm even talking about.
First's rough by today's standards, all these games suffer a level of slowdown that with today's enhancements should be patched if someone decides to make an updated version of the classics
Nik Dk Correct. Super R Type is a sort of compilation of the best bits of the R Type series up until that point. At least, that's how I seem to remember it from back when I was a kid playing it on the SN in 1992.
Hehe yep, R-Type has kind of a messy history. To be honest, i usually skip mentioning LEO and Dimensions, because LEO like you said was officially a spin off, but they later used influences from LEO into the canon R-Type games. Dimensions is still the only R-Type game that i have not played yet, it came out on Xbox, which i didn't have, and i have no PS subscription either, nor a PS4. So it is nice to see you come in from the other angle.
Would you be interested at all in making a video explaining R-Types Lore. It is very interesting and also a very dark story. Any thoughts on this idea?
For people who dont know about playstation now if your internet connection is really unstable or very slow DO NOT GET IT it's pretty much like Netflix for video games the console streams the game never actually downloads
Hahaha, damn. Sorry to see you die so many times, but it is funny to see how ruthless the game is. Stage 6 used to be one of my main frustrations when i was a kid, infinite mode sure is handy there. Having the bosses walk out on you is very anti-climactic yeah, because this game actually makes you want to learn the patterns and tactics.
Better than Zero Wing. I prefer Thunderforce but I believe an R Type game released in one year would be equal to a Thunderforce game released in the same year.
The original R type is my favorite. It might not be the most advance but its a classic.

You can find a lot of Williams / Atari arcade games on old PS2 disk compilations
The slow-motion feature in this game is the equivalent of the White Tanooki Suit.

If you get around to it, streamed or not, you should play Einhander or In the Hunt for PS1. Both are pretty cool horizontal shooters.
