Great video I just found your channel by chance. Fun to watch, I worked at Norpac for 25 years and loved to swim and fish on the Cowlitz R. I had many friends who loved fishing the rivers around Longview. One time maybe 20 years ago I watched a guy catch a 7 foot sturgeon out of lake Sacajawea.
That a boy Gene. The struggle is real. What an epic fight! Worth every second and I'm watching not fighting the fish. I love what you do and get out there as much as I can. See you out there soon.
WOW Gene! Amazing fight anyway! Absolutely legendary how you fought the fish, filmed, drove, banked, and anchored! I think he cut your leader when he turned and ran on one of the sharp boney plates that protrude down the side of the sturgeon. I've been thinking about making a trip down to the cowlitz with my son soon and we'll holler at you if we see you from the bank! My boys middle name is Gene after his grandpa, and several years ago I gave him my old Shimano convergence,8'6" 10-20#! Was my old plunking rod! I love Shimano rods, and have had great luck with them too

I loved watching this sturgeon give you a catch and release. You did excellent fighting that monster. Sorry but that beast will be food for nightmares forever.
can't tell if you have a small pfd on but with all the floppy squirlly water it might be a good idea. Don't ask me how I know. Love your videos and I'll get right. back to the rest of this one.
It's a 2012 Smokercraft Sportsmans 1660. 16' 9" long with 60" floor width 84" beam. it comes with 2 seat bases but I took out one and use a pedestal for more space. It has a 60/40- 40hp Merc jet and the 9.9 kicker. I love it. works great on lakes and rivers. Has a weight of 840lbs.
Same thing happened to me same place up by the dam snapped off right at bank .don't think it was even legal to remove it from water huge sturgeon eggs on the bottom
Kings are no where near as line shy as Kings.. Here in SE Alaska you just can't use that light of line.. If you want to land'm.. Need a minimum of 25lb... Lots of people just like to go dance and flirt around with high-test odds of not landing them.. Not here.. Stergies too..
@@Northwestfishingfanatics When I troll.. I use heavier line cause you can pick up a hundred plus pound halibut while trolling for Kings.. I am from lived in Oregon for most my high school and college life.. Oregon's nature has a big place in my heart.. But the politics is destroying it almost on pace with my birth state, California.. They are working on Alaska too.. New Zealand would be nice if "they" weren't already there too.. Enjoy your the warm weather fishing season..
@@drostly3220 Shoot when I troll the Ocean for Chinook I use 50lb test leaders. Rivers from boats I can chase them down. I have many videos of ocean downrigging. I hear you on the politics stuff. California is in bad territory and Washington and Oregon are neck and neck in second place.

Ur a bad ass. Fighting monster sturgeon, filming , and driving the boat. Awesome!
I don't know about that but... thanks. 😆

Glad you enjoyed it
Wow super trip. Thanks for letting me join you! A vid on how to make that slip hook rig would be truly appreciated....
You bet! Ok.
That was a masterful piece of work. Fighting the fish and your boat. Well done
Thanks

Nice. Good luck.
At least you got a hell of a fight out of it. I thought for sure he'd be gone before he was! Good job, Gene!
Me too and thanks. Amazing how much pressure 12lb line will take.
You the man!!! Hopefully i will see you on the river soon
Haha. Thanks.

Thanks so much.
Totally thought you were gonna land that! You’ll get one some day!
Yeah me too. In hindsight I shoukd have let him run a bit more right before it snapped. A bit too much pressure. Thanks for watching.

It was really something. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks.
Great boat handling
Thank you. And thanks for watching. It did make it challenging.
Lol i gotta agree that's "NO Flippin" steelhead😂😂😂 you're human gene it happens. Freaking love your channel
Thanks!
“It’s a freakin sturgeon” 😂 love the channel. Keep up making the videos.
Glad you like them! It was definitely a surprise. 😆
That was fun to watch!!
It was the most fun I've had losing a fish. 😆
Wow! I’ve only caught em on the Columbia. Never knew they came up the river that far! That’s amazing! Love your videos Gene!
Lol where do you think they come from…
Thanks for watching! I've seen them before but never had the opportunity to fight one.
Ahhh man. Heart breaker!! Looks like time to be On my way!!!!!
It was but I'm ok with it. Thanks.
Great battle. I would call it a draw as you parked the boat and pulled harder to get it over with. Likely saved the sturgeon.
Well done!
Yeah, I could have exhausted it but... I was actually wanting it over. 😆
Someone say STURGEON...
NICE Vid!!! Great Job!!
Thank you. Appreciate it.
Dude! That would have been a miracle to land that fish solo. You're not dragging a sturgeon that size to the bank.
I hear ya. Thanks for watching.
Great fight, man! I’m amazed at how long you had the Sturgeon on, with only 12lb test!
Me too. Thanks.
Curious if one of these days you could do a "Boat check" video and see what all you've got going there, looks like you have a pretty versatile rig!
I love it. Rivers and lakes it's great. Bow mount up front would be the icing on the cake to be a nice bass boat too. Works for duck hunting as well.
Great fight! Bravo! We all saw the one that got away.
What an awesome battle. Nothing to feel bad about over that fight.
It was. Felt like I held my owm ... 😆

I never wear one, although I know I should. Especially since I have so many just sitting around. 😆
Good battle
Indeed. Thanks for watching.
Wow that was an amazing fight I thought you had a springer also lol
Up until it jumped I thought I had the Springer of all Springers.
Hooked a 5ft one back trolling at barrier once. Lots of fun on my coho rod. Takedown was weird rod just slowley bent over.
Sounds like a blast.
Love your vids gene ! Keep up the amazing work.
Glad you like them!
Super fun hookup!!!
Yes it was!
When you set the hook and as much as the rod bent and it barely moved I was thinking this should be interesting! ha!
same here. 😆
Surprised to see a sturgeon that far up river. At least it wasn't a seal, lol!
I've seen them jump at the spillway. Thanks for watching.
Just wondering is it open for springers and steelhead on the entire Cowlitz ? Was thinking about plunking around the kelso area
Double check the regs. And the emergency rule changes.
have you ever fished off the Massey bar?
Not in a long time. I usually stay further up river lately.
Above blue creek?
Yes.
Tell us a little bit about the boat you’re using

ouch I feel your pain
Could have been worse. I felt somewhat victorious after fighting it for that long. 😆
I want to try to catch fish on bait in a river but it never works as well as it does in the ocean I’ve found, so I stick to hardware mainly
Keep at it. You just never know. thanks for watching.
Why 12lb leader in heavy water like that???
12 works great. just not for 6ft Sturgeon. thanks for watching.
Same thing happened to me same place up by the dam snapped off right at bank .don't think it was even legal to remove it from water huge sturgeon eggs on the bottom
sounds exciting
You should really have someone go out with you to help control the boat and net the fish for you. Plus it's safer.
I'm the only person who is ready to go when I feel like fishing. Lol
Where your rod sits on the yacht…a little rubber rack…hold it tight!
Good idea
He’ll of a fight
One I didn't mind losing. 👍

I use lighter line from my boat. If I were bank fishing I'd go heavier. thanks for watching.

I bet you wish you had more than 12# test.
20 would have been great. :-)
