In part two of How to make an Arcade Machine, Mike from The Geek Pub walks through the process of installing all of the electronics into the arcade cabinet. Using this machine you will be able to play all of the old school retro arcade games including PacMan and Galaga!
In part three of this video we will cover installing all of the t-moulding, the lighted marquee, and the graphics on the sides.

I plan on using your videos and website to source my own project, one thing I noticed that you may consider is taking 30 seconds or so near the end of the videos to point out where viewers can find your other videos "see description below" kind of thing. I know it may seem mundane but the more basic you make it the more praise you'll recieve.

I'm not sure what you mean. I do that very thing in every video. In addition to annotations and cards on every video.
What size monitor will this cabinet support? I think I’m gonna use your plans. What’s the largest size monitor that can be added?
This might be a dumb question but I always thought those happ joysticks should be installed from the top with a stud and a nut. I like how you just used screw to install from the bottom. I wanna put iL Eurosticks in my SF2 Arcade1up cab, which screws did you use? My control deck is only .5" thick mdf so my screws would have to be shorter but those screws look like the perfect size for the joystick mounting plates!
I had to replace the joystick on my x-arcade (that looked like the ones in this video) because they sucked for fighting games, i change them for the IL (Industrias Lorenzo) and they are soo good 😊

If your going to play mostly games from the 80s turn the screen sideways and go for that if it’s 90s games go for this version
We are almost finished with our build. I’m confused on the two button towards the bottom of the control deck. Which layout is this?

Looks good. If you take the plastic off the front of the monitor you can get the monitor sitting a lot more flush with the screen bezel. Then run the screen bezel right around the scree

If you purchased this new for this project not advisable. Personally would use a second hand screen.
What size screws should I use for the electrical box? On mine the holes are pretty big, probably 1/4" Should I be using a #10 1/2" sheet metal screw? I don't want the screw poking through the 3/4" MDF.

alexspinaas Thanks so much Alex! Its hard to say, because I recycled a lot of stuff for it that I already had laying around. As a guess, I'd say you'd need $650 if you didn't have anything and had to buy it all. Of course, I'm leaving out any tool costs.

I have a question. Are the buttons on the left and right end sides of the control panel coin buttons? I'm confused. I also barely saw the joystick being wired in the video.
I wish you would have shown me how to connect the plugs to the light switch, I'm trying to figure it out.

I was wondering on what type of PC you used for this arcade. It looked like a custom build one but wasn't for sure. And would do you have preference on a PC tower arcade compared to your Raspberry Pi arcade.
I used a custom built PC that I had in the closet for this build, but have since replaced it with a Raspberry Pi 3.
TheGeekPub is it easy to install hyperspin on the pi? I just got mine set up on Windows and want to move it to a pi when I order one
I'm an absolute beginner with electrical wiring in that I have no idea what I'm doing but I wanted to add a switch to the bartop build. I've bought everything I need but now I have a problem. Even after buying the plans from the site I'm clueless as to how to wire in a switch to the whole setup seeing as the switch is separate from the quad box. I have three spools of wire each color coded white/black/green. I also have wire caps. Should I cap the the black wires from the power cord and switch together and then run loose black wire from the switch to the 2 gang box setup as usual? Then run power cord's neutral wire straight to the 2 gang box setup as usual and cap all ground wires together?
What kind of buttons/switches did you use? I've been shopping around for fightsticks for the Ps4 and it seems like there are some premium options (Hori Hayabusa, Sanwa/Seimitsu, etc) but I'm curious if you think they are worth it for a project like this?
u didnt show how u got the coin box to work .... do did u gt it to register coin inputs on the pc/ emulator

Is there any advantage in using the PCs board to wire the controllers, versus connecting the wire directly to the pins on the raspberry pi?

+TheGeekPub hey its me again. I think i have my software issue down now. But what i dont understand is how you made all you electrics sync up with your power adapter and switch.
For example if i just turned the power on that way. my tv monitor and pc would not turn on, as you have to normally press the buttons on them manually. also if you just turned everything off with the switch, when u turned the pc back on it would detect it hadnt shut down properly and want to recover. Do you just have software for these problems or what?

I use it all the time.
Should'a put a CRT in it, just for authenticity now Your gonna say it's impossible, but theres such thing as an HDMI to AV converter, also HDMI to component And CRTS (the really good ones) support Component
+TheKHfan358over3d I covered this in detail... but what the heck. I specifically chose NOT to use a CRT because of 1) cos,, 2) weight, 3) excessive power consumption, 4) form factor, 5) my need for touch screen, and 6) reliability. All covered in great detail on my website if you want to know more.
TheGeekPub hmm, still a CRT is more reliable for gaming, and considering your playing older arcade games it'd perfectly simulate how it's like

Dumb question. Do the plans on your site include how to wire the controls to the computer? I am extremely new to this. But building one of these has been a dream I have had for a while.
The arcade controls you pick should come with wiring instructions. I don't include it in the plans because there are a hundred different kits that all work different. If you buy the controls listed in my plans your golden.

Question, is the monitor just sitting in the cabinet and on the rails or did you secure it more? I haven't found anything else on the blueprints or website?
It just sits there. There is no need to secure it. Unless you plan on tumping the cabinet over or are afraid it might get stolen if in a public setting.
In the case you do want to secure it, just add a board behind the monitor and screw it into the VESA mount holes with some machine screws.

I've been thinking about building one for a long time, I've always loved woodworking, tech and videogames and it would be a great project to use some of my tools!

It would look more nostalgic with a CRT monitor installed ;)
But it would weigh a ton, use a fortune in electricity, and put off a lot of heat.
Does hyperspin work with mame? Or is there any special software that's needed ?

It is a press fit, but I also include a VESA mounting option.

+Videogametourist It connects to the same controller all of the buttons and joysticks connect to.
You need a 0.125" steel frame to better-secure the coin box, or they'll pry it out through the MDF and steal all your quarters, then come back a week later, steal the quarters again, and complain that the machines are all broken and should be fixed. :)

Most certainly!
sanwa or seimitsu sticks/buttons are better. They have better sensitivity and they just feel better overall

Nice video bro. It sounds like the Bluejays wanna play galaga. Did you need to use an amplifier with the speakers? Or just wire them straight from the raspberry?
Those speakers are USB powered (built in amplifier). That's why I use them all the time. So easy and sound good.

Something I noticed; traditionally 1player is on the left, and 2player is on the right, I noticed it is reversed in your setup (perhaps intentional).
+Lorenz “Lysistrata” A Yes, it's intentional. I felt like 99% of the time is one player, and I wanted to stand in front of the cabinet. It's literally at 3 second change to switch it though.

It's easy enough if you have a basic knowledge of carpentry skills. Do not expect a step-by-step tutorial from this guy though. His plans are a good deal if you already know what you're doing and you have previous knowledge of arcade cabinet builds. He leaves a lot of crucial stuff out. Like in this video when he did the speaker bar. You didn't show where he got the speaker bar from and he didn't show us him putting it in.

Looking for something to complain about. When he screwed that switch down on the top and did one side all the way down. It sounded like something crunched and looked like it flexed. I can see the switch bursting into flames down the road. Did it ?

When I was a kid and arcades were popular they had a semi-indoor arcade at White Water (an amusement park). I remember playing a game (which escapes me) that sent a mild electric shock through you when pressing the coin return button at the coin box. Most of the players were coming in from the pool and water rides. The floor was wet and with wet fingers on the control panel... Guess I was lucky.
wouldn't it have been easier and/or cheaper to just take a regular computer case fan and plug it directly on to the motherboard headers of the pc instead of using a usb fan?
+Benoit de Perthuis USB fans are the same price, and don't require me cutting a hole in the PC. Plus, the idea is the cabinet is supposed to be independent of the PC. I can replace the PC at will and the fan will always plug right in.

Rude! He said there was a video about installing and setting up MAME on his channel. Naturally, looking for what was described, I looked for a title along the lines of "how to use MAME" or "installing and setting up MAME... Not something about a raspberry pi arcade. Do you expect me to assume a video with a title to do with a raspbery pi arcade to have installation and set up of MAME when THIS arcade build doesn't?

a windows pc to run a simple arcade machine... are you kidding me? for $80 you can get a pandorabox 3D or something similar. $110 and you have a pandorabox 3d together with all the switches for a 2 player arcade and 2 joysticks.
Go for it. I think I spent $25 on that PC at a yard sale though.
