    Calling Ilyushin "Ishulin" is the only problem with this video. 😂 Great work!
    On a side note Brrrrt fans often criticise the Su-25 for its much less focus on anti-tank warfare. To be fair the Soviets didn't need to deal with overwhelming number of NATO tanks (it was the other way around), so tank hunt was not a priority.

    • @evilbabai7083
      @evilbabai7083 ปีที่แล้ว +140

      Except Brrrt proved to be borderline useless against tanks and most kills were made with missiles or bombs. It's somewhat useful for repelling enemy infantry in close air support, but mostly due to psychological effect of a dense heavy fire. No one seems to wonder why no other plane today is built around the heavy cannon if it's so good.

    The most interesting story that happened to the Su-25 during the Chechen war: one Su-25 flew to the airfield with ... a telegraph pole in one engine! 😮It turned out that this Su-25 was performing a combat mission at an ultra-low altitude and accidentally touched the wires between the poles, one pole was pulled out of the ground and stuck into the engine. The plane still managed to return and land on the airfield ... 😎

      The MANPADS are quite effective at getting a hit and causing damage. I'm not sure what the hit rate is for various models of MANPADS nor what the kill ratio is. A hit would certainly be a mission kill. Either way these aircraft are reduced to low flying to avoid SHORAD and SAMS whereby they become vulnerable to MANPADS. Therefore the munitions have to be released at a stand of distance. They seem to be just used as mobile artillery firing at targets from low altitude and at a distance. A modern drone with precision munitions or precision artillery can do a better safer job. The western philosophy was just to go in low and fast and fire something like autonomous homing Brimstone at a stand of distance.

      @@PyroFTB higher SA in the A-10 due to the better cockpit visibility, vastly better RWR and datalink, TGP that doesn’t require the aircraft to be flying towards the target.
      Engine position is better for maintenance, FOD, and obscuration from ground fire.
      A-10 is much more maneuverable with the straight wing and lower wing loading, which benefits it more while evading SAMs and AAA than the Su-25’s top speed benefits the Su-25.
      And the armor around the cockpit on the A-10 is actually thicker than the Su-25’s at 40mm of titanium rather than 25mm

      @SergeiSugaroverdoseShuykov ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They are built using quite different concepts: A-10 were expected to evade heavy damage by applying design choices like high-placed hidden behind tail engines with 'colder'(because of high bypass ratio) exhaust so manpads will have hard time to get proper target lock, while SU-25 were built to handle as much damage as possible(in comparison to A-10 it is actually capable to fly with single engine left).

    This plane is only viable in fully uncontested airspace (like the A10). If the enemy has air defenses, the slow speed makes it a prime target for any AA installations.
    Saw a Video of a SU 25 doing an attack run in Ukraine. The moment it rose above treetop level, its RWR lit up like a christmas tree, the pilot shoutet something and dove down immediatly again...
    But overall CAS with any kind of plane is hard in such an enviroment. Even for SU 34s or F15Es. Maybe F35s could have a chance, but with externally mounted bombs, they become easy radar targets as well.

    • @DefinitelyNotEmma
      @DefinitelyNotEmma ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Of course, but that's why SEAD is important, which requires specialized variants and something the F-15E and Su-34 were partially designed for. The F-35 being the Joint *Strike* Fighter was also designed with that in mind, the F-35 has been designed to conduct SEAD against systems like the S-300 and S-400 so that aircraft like the F-15E and UAVs can conduct effective CAS.
      Another way to achieve this is by using EW (we call it EloKa in Germany) variants, like the E/A-18G Growler or the J-16D to suppress enemy air defense systems. Such aircraft can also conduct both SEAD and CAS, as they can carry external loads without compromising their effectiveness. Another example for such a dual-role aircraft would actually be our Tornado. The IDS variant is a traditional strike fighter, while the EDS variant is designed for electronic warfare, reconnaissance and SEAD.

      Does that make them "unviable" however? They are of course vulnerable in contested airspace, but no weapon can be dismissed purely on the chance of failure. You would have to account for the repair and write-off costs + pilot casualty figures per sortie versus the damage inflicted on the enemy. It seems the trade-off is worth it, as both sides continue to use the plane. You also have to consider whether its role is replaceable. On the one hand we've seen cruise missiles gradually replaced by glide bombs, because the fulfill a similar role with better economics, but on the other hand you have tanks. This time last year, you'd have people calling this era the end of tanks, but now they're seen as more indispensable than ever. Despite hundreds of lost chasses on both sides, it turns out there is nothing else on the battlefield that can deliver that much firepower right up to entrenched positions while providing relative safety for the crews.

      Why use an expensive jet when you can hit the same target with a 30k$ UAV? This doesn't take away from the fact that SU 25 has been a successful aircraft and it can still pull it's own weight even today.
