    Charlie's enthusiasm is not only contagious but also educational! The idea of presenting the collections of watch enthusiasts is as touching as it is revealing. Indeed, the variety and, at times, uniqueness of the timepieces on display offers a sample of what thrills the horological heart of collectors out there. This more ''relaxed'' episode also reminds us that vintage watches contain a treasure of information, memories, particularities and emotion that are priceless. A person who opens his box containing watches accumulated over the years also opens his soul to us a little. This is perfectly in line with one of the facets characterizing our favorite family so well: emotion. Uhhh... Passion, rather. Naah... I would say more the love of the profession. Heck, the sensitivity to perceive what thrills others? Affection for the craft? The Drunkenness of the moment? The feverishness of educating? That's it. I give up. CRM cannot be summed up in a single adjective! But we can use a particular adverb: forever. As in ''CRM forever!''.

      Yeah but wearing a watch just for fashion and not at least having the right time and date. NOT GOOD for a watch enthusiast

    • @magicmike7198
      @magicmike7198 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nikkimiddlekillsday5161 Maybe so, my friend. Perhaps we should talk about ''levels'' of enthusiasm for watches then? If so, I'm certainly in the first levels of this chart of enthusiasts. Personally, I love watches and i couldn't care less about the movement or time accuracy (for now at least). I'm definitely able to appreciate the marvels of mechanics and engineering that are bringing these timepieces to life but for now, I only care about the aesthetics. Thanks for reading :)

    • @nikkimiddlekillsday5161
      @nikkimiddlekillsday5161 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@magicmike7198 not for me, if I'm enamored towards something or if I'm an enthusiastic about it I definitely want to be using it for what it's intended purposes are. I have many different watches; Japan, Swiss, automatic, manual, quartz, calendar, time, chronograph, tachymeter and I try to use each and every function when I'm wearing the piece. Now I'm not going to lie and say I just go for function because looks are a VERY big deal when selecting a watch but using it is just as important to me, especially when I refuse to use my phone to check the time or date

    • @magicmike7198
      @magicmike7198 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nikkimiddlekillsday5161 Well i certainly understand your passion and the pride of refusing to look at your phone to tell the time is quite admirable! Like I say, I'm probably at the lowest end of the watch-enthusiast spectrum, but it's a start. I admit that the passion that some experts display when they talk about movements is sometimes contagious. I remember a video where the host was so proud to have noticed a complication on a watch and the owner to proudly answer ''Of course it's a complication... and what a complication!''... Your arguments are more than valid. But aesthetics will always take over for me. That i know. We do have one thing in common tho': our love for CRM!

    Would love to see some more vintage content and perhaps some videos checking out some reasonably priced watches e.g. casio edifice, Tissot, seiko etc.
    For example you could perhaps do a video where a few of you are given a certain budget e.g. $300 to buy a watch and then review/compare the watches and then decide who you feel bought the best watch for the price.

    Nice watches! WW1 was from 1914-18. The US got involved in 1917. The strap on the Hampden is almost certainly not the original, stains or not(looks like a later WW2 type). I have one myself from 1914 (15 jewels example) and it had its original leather strap still attached(good to hear it's now worth 1300 quid. I got mine in the 90's for 100 so...😄). Oh and if the lume still glows after UV exposure you can be fairly sure it's not the original radium. The radium mix they used then was so "hot" it burned out the phosphors within a few years. Adverts of the time only guarantee the glow for 2-3 years. Radiums half life is around 1300 years.
    Funny enough I have an Omega Mariner too. 😀The 1310 was Omega's first _inhouse_ quartz movement, but they had been heavily involved with quartz development as part of a Swiss consortium from the mid 1960's on, which gave rise to the Swiss Beta 21 quartz movement that came out in 1970(Seiko just beat them by a matter of months with their Astron, but it was a barely working prototype, the Beta 21 was in full production).
    Contrary to popular belief now(and Swiss marketing spin), the Swiss were _extremely_ gung ho for quartz(and electronic) and spent fortunes in developing it. Patek even won prizes for their electronic movement innovations and by the end of the Swiss chronometer trials the top spots were nearly all Swiss quartz. Longines was another one in the Beta 21 consortium and even found the time to design and produce their own inhouse cybernetic quartz watch at the same time(have one of them too, but it's a safe queen as they're as delicate as a butterfly's wing). Girard Perregaux produced the first Swiss stepping motor quartz watch and gave us the standard 32,768Hz quartz frequency that the vast majority of quartz movements still use today.
    What hit the Swiss hard wasn't so much quartz as they were selling their quartz analogue watches in good numbers(on the other hand the first run of AP mechanical RO took ages to sell). It was _digital watches_ Another American innovation that the Japanese took up and made better and cheaper and became the watch fashion, that instantly made mechanicals look old fashioned. The Swiss were almost completely left behind and when they got into them they were at least a year behind the Japanese and more expensive(the 1970's Swiss Franc exchange rate didn't help). Most of the big Swiss brands kept limping along. It was mostly the dozens of smaller(and cheaper) mom and pop brands that died. And it was quartz that had a lot to do with the Swiss revival in the 1980s. After all the Swatch group built their massive war chest by selling cheap and very popular quartz fashion watches.
    Their involvement with quartz is something Swiss marketing tends to avoid talking about. Well "mechanicals have soul" and much higher margins as you can charge a lot more for them. The basic Omega Speedmaster today, allowing for inflation etc is more than four times the price it was than when Apollo astronauts were actually wearing them on the Moon... Something like an Rolex Sub today is even more expensive again.
    BTW the Omega 1310 is a fantastic little movement and keeps very good time, but it's not close to Omega's Marine Chronometer. IE the 1310 runs at 32kilohertz, the Marine Chronometer runs at 2.4 _Megahertz_ Bloody eats batteries mind you.
